The Editor

Where would we be without neighbours? In most cases our neighbours can be a source of assistance and support and over a period of time we can develop relationships that really matter to us and are of great benefit. But, like all relationships, trust needs time to build and develop and sometimes it takes a sacrifice or two to help the relationship along. When did we last do this for our own neighbour I wonder?

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS ‘School’s out for Summer!’ School holidays are upon us once again and the excitement that all the kids feel at this time of year takes me back to my own far-off school days! I didn’t know Alice Cooper’s summerholiday rock anthem at the time but the same feeling was still there: ‘No more pencils, no more books,no more teachers’ dirty looks - School’s out for summer…!’ Six weeks of holidays stretching out as far as the eye could see, limited only by the power of the imagination. Fun, play, rest, relax… anything but school! Hopes, dreams, anything, could happen over these long, lazy yearned-for weeks of non-stop sunshine, games and laughter (we hoped!) ‘School’s out for summer – school’s out for ever!’ shouted Cooper, and it felt just like that. You knew it wasn’t forever, but on the first day of the holidays who cared about details like that? It was just magic to know it was ages until you’d have to go back again, and thinking about school going back was a bridge you weren’t going to cross till you had to! Dangerously, it’s all too easy for us to take the same summer-holiday

approach to life itself, if we’re not careful or wise. Obviously there are issues to face as adults that we never had to worry about in the carefree days of childhood, but the temptation to avoid thinking about anything deep or serious is always with us. As long as the good times last, we can live in a sort of summer-holiday mode of not wanting to think too far ahead about what happens when the holidays run out. We’ve all had our Shirley Valentine moments when we fantasise that maybe the holidays can just carry on and never end, but even Shirley knew that was a bubble just waiting to pop. Because that’s what eventually happens, of course. Sooner or later, as kids, we had to face the grim truth – it’s going to be time to go back to school soon! Mum would start shopping for new school shoes, or new bits of uniform or stationery or whatever, and the endless summer days began to feel not so endless after all. They say that all good things come to an end - even the school summer holidays! In this life that’s true of course. But it’s not true in Biblical terms. In fact, God’s promise to his people is that the good

times haven’t even started yet, and that he’s preparing an everlasting, neverending paradise for those who love him and have believed in and trusted his Son, Jesus Christ – but only for them. Some others don’t want to think ahead in life, to death… and beyond it. God and his Word are either dismissed, neglected or ignored – a bridge not to be crossed till nearer the time. But when is the time? Nobody knows. It could be summer, winter, autumn, spring? Could be tomorrow, could be today? We’re not children any more, and we’re simply kidding ourselves if we think the holiday of life is never going to end. And it’s not just a new term at school that has to be faced then…‘it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the Judgment’ (Hebrews 9:27). Please don’t leave God out of your future, lest you find out he’s leaving you out of his.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES Unlike my colleagues in the Foreign Office my role in the Treasury rarely requires visits to far flung locations. So, I was fortunate to spend some time in one of Britain’s most spectacular overseas territories, Gibraltar, to welcome the commonwealth baton to their shores. In just a few days the baton will be coming to the Highlands before it makes its way to Glasgow for the 20th Commonwealth Games. Another opportunity for Scotland to showcase our tremendous athletes, the Games will also mark a coming together of nations from across the globe. That alone is something to be celebrated. Like so many parts of the world, Gibraltar witnessed some of the most damaging conflicts of the last century. Conflicts that ripped our communities apart, inflicting misery on an almost unimaginable scale. This year, we also commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War. It behoves us all to reflect that, by working together, Britain and countries across Europe are enjoying the longest period of peace and security in generations.

It is a real pleasure to represent the happiest city in Scotland! Recently Inverness was voted the happiest place in the land - and irrespective of how seriously we can take these findings - it is a great reputation to have for tourism - in many ways the most important sector of the economy for the North. Tourism involves us all. We are all ambassadors for Scotland. Put simply, when people have a holiday here we want to make them happy. So a cheerful local populace is a good way to start. Last month, as Tourism Minister, I had the pleasure of spreading the message of friendship in London, as a guest keynote speaker at the British Hospitality Association annual conference. I emphasised that everyone is most welcome in Scotland - as our closest friends; And that I just happened to be the parliamentary representative of the place in Scotland where the people were the happiest of all! And that is before any partaking of a dram of our national drink.

Nairnshire Farming Society. Nairn Show 2014 Fun for all the The Nairnshire Farming Society is holding its 216th Annual Show on Saturday the 26th of July at Kinnudie Farm Auldearn which will be presided over by the Society’s first female president, Mrs Irene Macarthur. Nairn Show will have something for everyone with an excellent food fair, good quality trade stands, a full and varied programme of afternoon entertainment and an excellent display of livestock in the cattle, sheep and horse sections which will be judged by an all female judging team. This year’s show is shaping up to be a very attractive and fun-filled day for all the family and we are hoping for a good crowd. Car parking is to be free this year whilst admission charges are held at £10 per Adult, £5 per concession and secondary school child and £1 per primary or pre-school child. Our charges are set at a level to cover the substantial set up costs associated with the show and also to enable the society to make donations to local clubs and charities. Visitors will also be treated to a varied line up of trade stands both on the field and under canvas in the Food and Craft Fairs which will offer all kinds of merchandise including local produce, fancy goods as well as the very latest cars and agricultural machinery. The Food Fair will again include cookery demonstrations throughout the day by various providers in a dedicated kitchen area.

Family!

There will also be display of vintage tractors and machinery, a range of catering facilities and a licensed bar. There will be a visit from a group of Forss Young Farmers who will have driven from Forss with vintage tractors to raise funds for the Archie Foundation. As ever the marquee competitions will be very competitive and no doubt will produce a wonderful display of horticulture, wine, honey, baking, produce and handicrafts. Main Ring entertainment will include return visits by the Broke FMX Motor Cycle Display Team and, Nairn and District Pipe Band It will also feature a Vintage Tractor Parade, Livestock Parades and Children’s races. Highland Dancers, Forres Accordion and Fiddle Club and Nairn Pipers will entertain in a new covered food court and entertainment area. Horse Show Jumping will also take place in a separate arena from 1100. The Nairn Show website, www.nairnshow.org.uk, will be updated regularly between now and show day to give the most up to date information regarding the show. The day will be rounded off with a Marquee Dance in the Showfield from 9pm to 1am with dancing to music by The Anne Dickson Band.

In the Bible the rich fool said, "Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink and be merry." But God said unto him, "Thou fool, this night your soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?" (Luke 12:19,20) The Lord Jesus says, "I know thy works and where thou dwellest.” “ Marvel not that I say unto thee, ye must be born again." www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290

The City Break Popular for some years now, particularly for those whose time is very limited, a City Break is an excellent way of getting away for a few days and seeing some interesting and different cultures. The advantage is that you can come and go any day of the week, normally using scheduled flights, with a complete selection of differing hotels. Imagine flying directly to Barcelona, from Edinburgh, staying 3 nights in a smart city hotel full of character on a Bed and Breakfast basis as there are so many restaurants that you would want to try for lunch and dinner. Cities like Barcelona are excellent for walking about, seeing the marinas, waterfront, Las Ramblas shopping street and the Food market. Though no direct flights exist from Scotland, Vienna is another popular destination, with all its imperial splendour, Art Nouveau, waltzes and coffee houses. A grand ring of 19th century palaces surrounds the mediaeval city, with its narrow streets, hospitable inns, cafes and shops. Two sets of customers have recently joined a break to Vienna with a trip to Budapest, using the train to travel from one to the other. Both cities boast much of the 19th century grandeur of the Hapsburg Empire. It's Bela Bartok and Liszt Museums in Budapest as it is the Strauss family in Vienna.

art galleries, concert halls and churches; as a university city it comes alive at night in cellar bars, restaurants and jazz clubs. Like Prague, this city largely escaped destruction during WWII. In Prague only one building was hit during that war, and it is now known as the American Church in honour of its bombers! Athens now has direct flights from Edinburgh. The Acropolis, Temple of Athena & the National Archaeological Museum are all in the city and a trip to The Sacred Site of Delphi to see the Temple of Apollo would provide enough knowledge to get a Gold Star in any school project on Ancient Greece! The Plaka area of Athens with it's maze of narrow streets is perfect for browsing stalls selling pottery, jewellery and marble. Eating out here is mainly outdoors in the Tavernas specialising in Souvlaki (kebab), spanakopita (spinach pie) & Meze (greek tapas) all washed down with some surprisingly good local wine!

There are many suitable Italian cities to visit for a short time and Florence is one of the finest settings of them all. On the banks of the River Arno, Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance and the city of Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Giotto, Dante and their patrons the Medici family. When you are there a visit to the Uffizi Gallery and Museum is a must! There are direct flights now from Edinburgh to Krakow, the cultural capital of Poland. Krakow is rich in museums, Information kindly supplied by

INNES HOUSE

Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.

“Many venues have a marquee in their garden, but how many have a garden in their marquee…?”
