As we slip into July 2012 our thoughts may well drift towards lazy summer days and holidays relaxing in the sun. Spare a thought for the hundreds and thousands of people taking part in this summer’s Olympic Games and events like Wimbledon where traditionally, it seems, our creator reserves for us His most challenging weather. Whilst the athletes and sportsmen struggle with the conditions we can ‘relax’ at our beach resort. Please enjoy your break and think of others less fortunate! Pastoral letter and Church Meetings There is a story in the Bible where Jesus meets a woman who is collecting water from a well. We don’t know her name, but as the story evolves we learn quite a lot about her. She is from a culture and religious background which is completely alien to Jesus world and she clearly has a colourful past, in fact, she is probably visiting the well on her own because no-one else wants to be seen in her company. However, as the conversation between them progresses, it becomes obvious that she appreciates Jesus openness and honesty, although she might be a little scared by the amount he seems to know about her. It ends with her going back to her village to invite her neighbours to “Come and see a man who has told me everything I ever did” ( John 4 :29) In all of Jesus’ public ministry, he engages with the most unlikely people as a way of showing all
around him that faith has nothing to do with power or status, nothing to do with how religious folk are, or how religious they think they are, but everything to do with accepting the invitation to “come and see”. It’s what he says to some friends of John the Baptist who are tagging along behind him, wanting to know more but not sure how to ask the right questions. They ask, “Where are you staying ? and Jesus replies “ Come and see”. In other words, don’t be scared, come and ask, come and explore, come and see for yourselves.
The faith experience is something we can only find for ourselves and the great thing with Jesus is that the invitation is always there – “come and see”, come and find out for yourselves. The other thing is that it is an open invitation to anyone and everyone. In a whole variety of instances, Jesus demonstrated his

love for all people by deliberately seeking out the stranger, the poor and vulnerable, the outcast and those considered unclean and he did it to show that he is not just for those who think they are right with God, but for everyone.
A contemporary theologian describes how the stories of Jesus inspired her. To her the stories about Jesus revealed “an upside-down world in which treasure was found in the midst of darkness, in which the hungry were filled with good things; and where new life was glimpsed in a humiliated thirsty woman and a man who would die on a Roman cross - come and see for yourself !

EXTRACTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 9TH OF MAY 2012 OF NAIRN WEST COMMUNITY COUNCIL
Planning Issues Town Centre RY understood that the demolition of Old Community Centre/Free Church and Petrol station site will commence on Monday 14 May. Cllr Liz MacDonald commented that there was a delay due to turning off of utilities. The contractors are aware of the Curtis Cup and will make the site enclosed for the six week contract.
South Nairn RY had received application for planning permission for South Nairn, pre application public exhibition of initial proposals at Nairn Community Centre, Wednesday 23 May, 12 to 3pm, 4.30 to 7.30pm and Thursday 24 May, 12 to 3pm. RY commented that it could be feasible that Scotia Homes receive planning permission prior to this application. NWCC had maintained the stance, no houses without a bypass. However, approx 220 homes could be built without bypass in place. GV pointed out that the bypass plans from Transport Scotland did not include access to South Nairn, so therefore, a bypass being in place would be irrelevant, if no access was to be included.
GK asked if a meeting could be arranged with elected Councillors to discuss how to get best for Nairn with regards planning matters. The people of Nairn should decide what is going to happen in Nairn and not Councillors from other parts of the Highlands. RY requested that at the next joint CC meeting that all four elected Councillors attend to discuss.
GV commented on planning permission for bus station, that when one Councillor suggested a site visit as to whether a four storey building should be built there, another Councillor vetoed the site visit, and the planning permission was granted. There followed various comments regarding the height of the building and how comparisons had been made between bus station and police station, but planners had failed to take into account that the police station is located on a hill, and a site visit would have confirmed that. GK questioned the flats being allocated to young families where there was no lift. This
page 8 - July 2012
would be impractical, for both the elderly and the young. RY was disappointed that NWCC objections were not heard at the meeting though the bus station is beside NWCC area, but River CC as statutory consultees were heard.
There followed discussion regarding whether in future when important planning applications were presented and comments had to be made within 14 days that all 3 Community Councils could get together and discuss and vote as to how to proceed. BY felt that if 2 CC’s were in agreement, and as elected members, they would then hold the majority vote and opinion of Nairn residents. Councillor Macaulay felt that as a new administration was now in place they would try to make a difference and agreed that an opportunity for 3 CC’s and 4 Councillors to get together and discuss and have consensus was advisable. RY concluded that all 3 CC’s are working well together and have four joint meetings annually and are going in the right direction. ACTION: Chairman to set up meeting with 4 Councillors and other CC’s
Sandown/Common Good Fund There was some discussion regarding development brief and the outcome of public consulation ‘charette’ Graham Vine reiterated the opinion that THC cannot really be trustees of Common Good and be the planning authority at the same time. GV when attending a planning meeting and raise Common Good, those attending are told this is about planning and nothing to do with ownership. Planning issues are totally separate from ownership. The Planning brief is about planning and Common Good is about ownership and these are two separate questions. GK commented that Common Good was left for the good of Nairn and that the money from this should go to the Ward Manager to benefit the Town.
Des Scholes mentioned that the £2.3 million debt has not gone away and what will the new administrations attitude towards the debt? BY felt that we have to have more united front instead of the divide and rule, that three different voices were sending mixed messages to the adminis-
tel: 01309 690063
tration and that all 3 CC’s should join together to speak as one voice.
Any Other Business GK mentioned about the success of 8 sheltered houses constructed in the gardens of Corsee and that the original Victorian mansion has been put on open market, more likely to be purchased by developer to be made into flats or demolished for larger block of flats. GK would like more sheltered housing by council, and suggested that NWCC write concerns and objections for affordable housing or buy to rent flats. ACTION: Graham Kerr to draft letter to Council GK also commented on the decay of Rosebank Church and whether planning permission was still current on the church and what was happening with it. RY commented that it had been sold for £1. BY added, that the Rosebank Church had been sold by the Highland Council to become a Heritage Centre. Highland Council had failed to place any buy back clause when it had been sold and has been in a deteriorating state for past twenty years or more. RY asked Cllr MacAulay to find out what is happening with Rosebank Church and report back to NWCC ACTION: Cllr MacAulay GK commented about Paddling Pool only opened for 2 months per year and that Louise Clark had suggested turning into soft play area. RY embraced the idea as possible project for NWCC to become ‘Jubilee Park’ but would await feedback from residents as to whether this was something that the residents would prefer to a Paddling pool. Des Scholes informed NWCC that at River CC meeting there was concern over lease to Nairn Library running out in two years and were writing to ALO Highlife Highland to make a case to keep Nairn Library open. DS also commented about the Cemetery and questioned whether THC had budget for new cemetery, and that RCC will write regarding this. RY receives copies of RCC letters and will write in support. ACTION: CHAIRMAN – Support RCC regarding Library and New Cemetery

The saying goes that we are all Jock Tamson’s bairns. So, whatever differences we may have as MSPs in different political parties in our Scots parliament - we have a common bond as fellow citizens. In fact, behind the scenes we do, by and large, get on fairly well. There is a fair amount of good humour in the debates, which is necessary as some of the topics are fairly technical, not to say dull! In an earlier debate, the First Minister gave a tribute to her Majesty the Queen on the occasion of her 60th anniversary, her diamond jubilee. Alex said that he could not reveal what he and her majesty talked about in their meetings, "But", he said, “I can say without revealing state secrets that we may have talked about horseracing." He is a noted follower of the horses.
So, I commend to Spotlight readers a look at the debates which you can see online by going to the Scottish Parliament website. Enjoy! Fergus Ewing MSP

The Queens Diamond Jubilee has been a nationwide celebration with events being held all over the country to celebrate 60 years since Her Majesty’s coronation. Living in the Highlands, however, the weather can often be a source of frustration on national holidays. This is especially true if the organisers are attempting to light a flame as part of the celebration.
Nonetheless, the weather has been fantastic this month and on Monday I was delighted to attend the Ecumenical Diamond Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving in St Stephens Church, followed by a special Bunkers Festival that was held in the city centre. This was concluded by the finale show where the Inverness Beacon was lit above Inverness Castle followed by a fireworks display above Inverness Cathedral. Congratulations go to the organisers, as the event went down without a hitch.

Chef’s Confidential Churros Spanish style doughnuts Our head chef has brought together a passion for cooking and influences from around the world to create a unique and eclectic dining experience based on sharing a selection of small dishes complemented only with good wine and good company … 1 cup water 2 tbsp brown sugar ½ tsp salt 1/3 cup butter 1 cup plain white flour 2 eggs ½ tsp vanilla extract 1/4 cup caster sugar ½ tsp ground cinnamon cooking oil for deep frying method 1. Place water, butter, salt and vanilla extract in a pan and bring to the boil. 2. When boiling add sieved flour and brown sugar to the pan and stir over heat until mixture leaves the side of the pan and then leave to cool. 3. Add the eggs to the cool mixture and beat well until smooth. 4. Blend cinnamon and caster sugar together and leave to one side. 5. Place mix in a piping bag with star nozzle, heat oil and pipe 10 cms strips into hot oil. Remove after 5 – 10 mins once they have turned brown. 6. Coat in the cinnamon sugar and enjoy! They should be soft and custard like in the middle and crisp outside. For a touch of luxury we serve with Scottish berries and chocolate fondue.

Dreaming of... Malta – Something for everyone
Rich in history, crystal clear seas and brilliant blue skies means that Malta and her Islands have something to offer most travellers. The fact that there is so much history and so many historical sites on the Island, never fails to amaze its visitors. Small but perfectly formed, Malta is only 17 miles by 8 miles, but whether you want the rich history of the country, snorkel and dive or simply relax, Malta has it all. With summer temperatures reaching over 30 degrees and winter temperatures rarely dipping below 15 degrees, you can holiday all year round with some great long stay deals to be had in the cooler months. A highlight is the Blue Grotto which is one of the islands gems, a series of natural caves and only accessible by boat you will be taken into caves where translucent waters are truly blue, giving the grotto its name. Visit the Mosta Dome which can be seen towering over the capital city of Valletta. Built by the Knights of St John, Valletta is rich in history and architectural treasures. It also makes a great city break. Another must is Mdina (say as M-Dina). The silent city is medieval and was the former capital. A fortified relic, it is reminiscent of an era which has long since disappeared. 20 Minutes by ferry is Malta’s sister island of Gozo. A typical Mediterranean island, it is a world apart from Malta. Greener and more fertile than Malta, the Gozitans live life at their own pace but now share their island with visitors to the selection of hotels from budget to luxury spa – or even a farmhouse for an authentic experience. If you can’t spare a week here try it as a two centre with Malta or it can be done in a day and use the hop on hop off bus travelling around the island or take your hire car over on the ferry !
