The Editor

I was challenged about the value of education the other day and came across a couple of interesting quotes:

Words by the Wayside “...that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.”

“It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows.” - Epictetus “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” - Aristotle “Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance.” - Will Durant

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” Mark Twain

(Romans 3:19)

Reader, God did not give the Ten Commandments as a means of approach and acceptance with Him if you kept them, but to show you that you cannot keep them, because you are a sinner and separated by your sins from Him. You have a need of a Saviour, that your sins might be washed away. All have sinned, all need the Saviour which is Christ the Lord. He alone is the way, the truth and the life the only way back to God for you. Do you know the Lord Jesus as your Saviour?

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Last summer we spent a few days back in the Edinburgh area, where I spent about seventeen years (pretty good going for any Glaswegian!), Maggie twenty-five years, and where the kids were born and grew up. So, going back there always means revisiting old haunts, renewing acquaintance with old friends, and generally enjoying a wee bit of pleasant nostalgia. After about three days there, a friend asked us how we were getting on with the new speed restrictions. ‘What do you mean?’ we enquired innocently. ‘The new maximum-speed restrictions, of course – you can’t do any more than 20mph in about a two-mile radius of the city-centre!’ Our first reaction was sceptical – a wind-up, surely? Not at all! The second one, then, was horror – how many speed-cameras had we gone through in the last three days? The third one was mild outrage – how on earth were we supposed to know about this when we had seen no signs anywhere to inform us of this situation? How can anybody be expected to obey the law when there’s no mention of it anywhere? Absolutely ridiculous! So we drove back to our residence (at 20mph!), carefully watching to see if we could spot anything, any tell-tale signs

at all sneakily tucked away in obscure corners in order to trap and fleece honest, unsuspecting, law-abiding, citizens like ourselves. And, do you know what? They were everywhere clear as day! Big signs, flashing signs, numbers painted on the road – in one stretch we’d been driving regularly there were four in about fifty yards, highly visible and totally obvious! And, somehow, we hadn’t spotted any of them in three days of driving - oops! Humbled and chastised, we swallowed our outrage, and slowed right down! It was kind of hard to see and explain afterwards why we hadn’t spotted all these signs before when they’d been there all the time. When I had time to stop and reflect on it later it struck me that there was a picture there of something altogether more serious. Many people make their way through life, dismissing the idea that there is a God or, if there is, that there is any evidence for his existence or for his interest in us. If they can’t see, hear, or touch him, he can’t be there at all, right? But what if God, as is his right as the Creator of the universe, has decreed that we should believe in him by faith rather than by sight and sound? That, if he chooses to speak to us by his Word,

(the Bible), and by his Son (Jesus Christ), that we should tell him that’s not good enough. He will yet point out to us all when we meet him in death and in judgment that there was sufficient evidence to believe in him in the very intricacy and beauty of the creation all around us and above us, in the testimony of the millions of people who had come to know him, in the pages of the Bible which reveal all that is necessary for us to know about God and about ourselves, and in many other different ways that he has given to make us wise and to understand. It will be no excuse that we didn’t see the signs, didn’t look for the evidence, didn’t try to follow the evidence where it led, didn’t ask God to reveal himself to us or to listen out for the answer. ‘There are none so blind as those who will not see.’ Do what the writer of Psalm 119 did, and pray to God about the Bible, asking, ‘Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things out of your law.’ (Psalm 119: 18) Rev Murdo MacLeod Nairn Free Church

Parliament Blog & Tide Times Loneliness and social isolation is a largely hidden but very serious problem, particularly in rural areas like the Highlands. That is why I was pleased to support a government mental health campaign over the festive period encouraging people not to bottle things up. The Scottish Government is now developing a strategy to tackle loneliness and isolation – Scotland will be one of the first countries in the world to do so. The draft plan will look at the causes and how they can be addressed. As a constituency MSP, I have encountered some cases where people have found themselves through circumstance becoming isolated and without regular social contact. One woman in particular went from being busy each day in a successful career to being more or less alone with her mother whom she loved and cared for and living in a fairly remote location. With the recent extreme weather, older people can too often be trapped indoors. And some of our hill and upland farming families who manage their farms themselves can be particularly isolated at this time of year as well. If you know someone who you think might welcome a call or a visit, or to be invited to a local community event, or to meet up with for a blether and a libation, why not get in touch with them today?

One of the best parts of my role as the MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey is getting the chance to see first hand how talented, passionate and caring our young people are. At the end of last year a number of pupils from Holm Primary School in Inverness wrote to me to share their concerns on the plight of child refugees and suggested changes they would like to see to the law to help these children. I was delighted to be able to visit these pupils at the start of this year and hear more about their thoughts on this issue and answer questions about being an MP. It really was both touching and inspiring to see how engaged they were and how deeply they cared about other children who are less fortunate than them. Their passion and enthusiasm for changing things for the better both here and further away really shows they are great ambassadors for their school and our community.

Barry

Woodward Inspirational Evangelist Free Entry “An amazing true life personal story told in a frank but amusing style” Barry Woodward grew up in Greater Manchester, England. At the age of 16 he left school without any qualifications and was drawn into the drug scene, experimenting with cannabis, amphetamines and LSD. This led to a heroin addiction and life as a drugs supplier. For twelve years he was totally dependent on drugs, during which time he spent a number of terms in prison. Miraculously, his life turned around completely following an amazing sequence of supernatural encounters. Following his rehabilitation Barry has been a banker, had a job in a marketing consultancy, and then a technology company, and then for seven years was the Senior Pastor of the Cambridge Vineyard Church in England and currently spends much of his time visiting prisons to relate his story and pass on his experiences. Barry will talk about his personal encounter with Jesus Christ and offer a message of hope for all. Even if we think our own circumstances have not been as challenging as his, the message is definitely one to be heard by all of us who can admit to finding life a struggle sometimes.

SWEET POTATO & ORANGE WAFFLES When they taste this recipe, no one will think twice about having waffles beyond breakfast again. You'll want these for dinner, lunch, and a late-night snack. The batter is simple—flour, cooked sweet potato, and milk. Orange zest brightens the homemade sweet potato waffles, and cumin adds the perfect savoury note that is versatile enough for different toppings.

Ingredients: ½ cup peeled diced sweet potato 2 cups plain flour 1 tbsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 6 egg whites

1 cup milk ¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup melted butter zest of 1 orange

Method: 1. Steam the sweet potatoes for about 15 minutes or until fork tender then mash with a WV[H[V THZOLY HUK ZL[ HZPKL °

2. 0U H SHYNL IV^S ^OPZR [VNL[OLY MSV\Y IHRPUN WV^KLY HUK ZHS[ ° 3.In another bowl combine the mashed sweet potatoes with the milk, brown sugar, butter, and grated orange zest.

4.Stir the sweet potato mixture into the flour mixture and mix until thoroughly combined. 5.Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gradually fold egg whites into batter 1/3 at a time (The batter will be thick) Scoop the batter onto a preheated, oiled waffle iron, and cook until lightly browned, about 5 to 6 minutes. If you don't have a waffle iron use a heavy based skillet instead.

Enjoy!

daffodils, but don’t quote me on that.)

When the blade loses its’ sharpness, it doesn’t make a clean cut through the grass sward. There are some obvious signs that this might be a problem. It may seem to struggle to give a decent cut at all; there may be issues with clumping and leaving material on the lawn, particularly when the grass has some wet in it (much of the time in our climate). Less understood perhaps is that a blunt blade will often end up tearing the grass leaf, rather than providing a clean cut. If you examine a few blades of grass, you will be able to see either a straight clean cut at the top, or a rather ragged, torn top. The result of a poor cut is bruising to the grass leaf, which causes the tip to turn brown, as it has been damaged. The overall effect can be to leave the grass with poor colour. Instead of an even, healthy green, it has a tinge of brown throughout. A ragged cut to the material of Alastair Watt

In between wintry weeks, we are getting some definite glimpses of spring with its longer days, emerging bulbs and buds on trees. The growing season is definitely not too far away. Before we know it, the air will hum with the sound of lawnmowers and strimmers being started up for the first time. For now, however, although it still feels as if we are in the icy grip of winter some days, the month of March sees the first of the new growing season’s tasks needing to get done. Let’s go!

DO cut back Cornus sanguinea and Cornus alba. Don’t be shy about it either, you can cut them down hard (to 6-12”) to encourage beautiful winter stems next year. DO plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Alliums and Oriental Lilies. DO lightly hose your beds to disturb any emerging weeds. DO prune Buddleja davidii, again these should be taken down hard. DO prune your bush Roses, and remember the maxim that you should always ‘get your worst enemy to prune your Roses’…..that is to say, you can prune these guys hard too! DO divide any herbaceous perennials and give the clumps away or plant them somewhere else in your garden. You can do this in Autumn too.

24

DON’T work your beds or walk in them a lot if they are wet, you’ll compact the soil (and also create stubborn muddy footprints on your lawn!) DON’T forget to make sure your ponds are clear of debris, and consider putting pond heaters away once temperatures are high enough. DON’T forget to order your seed potatoes, as they need a chance to ‘chit’ on your windowsill before being planted out. DON’T forget to cut back any growth you’ve left on herbaceous perennials over the winter, including any old seed-heads. Remember to keep the birds fed too, and ensure all your machinery and tools are serviced and have sharp blades. I love this time of year, I’m just itching to get started on some serious graft in the garden! I’ve some interesting garden designs on the go at the moment too, and am looking forward to some more exciting projects this year!

Local Artist

...takes part in TV show

Forres artist Jonathan Luxon will be taking part in the current series of “Portrait Artist of the Year 2018” aired on Tuesdays at 8.00pm, (Sky Arts channel) Jonathan’s heat is scheduled for Tuesday 6th March at 8pm. For those who don’t subscribe to the Sky Arts channel, the show can also be viewed at nowtv.com or with most internet TV boxes.

“My main inspiration has always been the human figure. A friend suggested entering this event. I didn’t take it too seriously at first but he kept mentioning it so I painted a self portrait and submitted it. I was pretty shocked when they phoned back to say I’d been selected. The biggest challenge was how to do a portrait in 4 hours as it usually takes me about 40. I spent a month prior to my heat working on my speed. The filming day was a frantic, hair raising experience, but terrific fun. I learned a lot from taking part. It has really helped develop my painting and I am planning to enter again for next year”. Jonathan studied Fine art in Canterbury from 1993-1996 where he specialised in figurative drawing and painting. He has lived in Moray since 2003 where he has worked as a self- employed portrait artist since 2009. As well as portraiture he has recently been focusing on painting the local landscapes, particularly the Findhorn Bay area.

Sunsupp opened on 10th of February 2017 (just over a year ago) and is owned by Serlina and Katie. They run a tanning Salon which has both stand up and lying down booths available. As part of the Sunbed Association they promote safe tanning, so you know you are in very good hands. Sunsupp don't just do sunbeds, they also offer spray tans which I decided to try and I have to say it was probably the best spray tan I have had. For the first time there was no blotching or streaking, the tan was just perfect, the colour amazing and in the middle of Janaury I had a tan and was just glowing. Sammi is the spray tan expert and really knows what she is doing. I was offered wipes to revmove make up and she went through every position I needed to stand in so that my whole body would be covered by the spray, checking afterwards to see if there were any areas of my body that I would like respraying just to ensure the coverage was perfect.

Sunsupp also have proteins, sports supplements and a range of tan accelerators. If you require any sports supplements they can order them in within 24 hours and if you live in Moray, they have same day delivery. Their website www.sunsupp.co.uk has all the products available. If anybody is looking to use sunbeds, get a spray tan or to buy supplements, I would recommend Sunsupp with its easy parking and friendly, helpful staff. This was a great place to go for a spray tan and I will certainly be going back.

Words by the Wayside “For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. (Psalm 86:5)

Reader, it is those who willingly choose the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour through repentance of their sins and faith in His atoning death, that He willingly bestows salvation upon. In God’s Family there are no conscripts; all have called upon God for salvation through Jesus Christ His Son. You must receive Him for yourself. Genuine repentance and salvation will always have a turning away from sin. All who call upon the name of The Lord shall be saved. Are you saved?
