Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings I love reading, and one of the books I’m really enjoying just now is in the style of a ‘daily readings’ book. Its distinctive feature is that it gives you a short story for every day of the year concerning something that happened in the history of the Christian church. It’s a combination of great, well-known events and of little-known characters and stories, perhaps known only to relatively few. In my house, at least, Spotlight seems to arrive around the last Tuesday of the month or maybe a week later on the first Tuesday of the next month. If I’m right, then this year’s March issue should arrive with you around February 26th or March 5th, so I thought I would just share with you whatever appears in my book for those dates! For February 26th then, the entry is for one of my literary and ministerial heroes, David Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981), a Welshman who began his carrer as a medical doctor before entering the Christian ministry in his late twenties, serving congregations in South Wales and in Westminster, London. He was one of God’s greatest gifts to the twentieth-century church, a natural leader and a powerful preacher – read, or listen to, anything by him that you can lay your hands on! When age and illness eventually
brought him to death’s door, he was physically frail but his faith remained strong and grounded in Jesus. No longer able to speak, on February 26th, 1981 he wrote in a trembling hand on a scrap of paper to his wife and family, ‘Do not pray for healing. Do not hold me back from the glory.’ Three days later, on St David’s Day, he passed into that glory which his soul longed for. Not all the stories in my book are of the deaths of godly believers of old, but the entry for March 5th is another one! The Covenanters of the seventeenth century fought courageously against the political and religious establishment of their time, facing persecution and even martyrdom for spiritual freedom in Scotland, and their spirit and testimony continues to be held dear by many today. John Dick of Edinburgh may not be a household name, but he was known in heaven and his story continues to inspire across the centuries. Arrested and sentenced to death by hanging, these were his final words, spoken from the scaffold in the Grassmarket on March 5th, 1684. To our ears, the words are quaint and ‘olde-worlde’, but the spirit and faith of this young man reverberates down the years: "I come here this day, and would not change my lot with the greatest in the

world. I lay down my life willingly and cheerfully for Christ and His cause and I heartily forgive all mine enemies. I forgive all them who gave me my sentence, and them who were the chief cause of my taking; and I forgive him who is behind me [the executioner]. I advise you who are the Lord's people, to be sincere in the way of godliness, and you who know little or nothing of the power thereof, to come to Him and trust God, He will not disappoint you. I say trust in the Lord, and He will support or strengthen you in whatever trouble of affliction you may meet with. I remember, when Abraham was about to sacrifice his son, Isaac said, "Here is the wood, and the fire, but where is the sacrifice?" (Dick looked up at the gallows, then out to the crowd, and continued), "Now blessed be the Lord, here is the sacrifice and free will offering. Adieu, farewell all friends." Two short stories, three hundred years apart, of men who trusted in Jesus and followed him in life and death. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did, and that you also will find them to be both encouraging and inspirational. Rev Murdo MacLeod Nairn Free Church

Parliament Blog & Tide Times “As a country we must change our transport priorities, ensuring that investment in high quality, reasonably priced public transport, and segregated active travel routes are prioritised. Bus patronage has been falling year on year, yet the current Transport Bill fails to propose radical plans needed to regulate services and empower local authorities. Something which I will be seeking to amend in the upcoming Transport Bill. We are also failing on active travel, with the 10% target of everyday journeys by bike set to be missed by some way. The recent increase in investment is welcome, but this must be targeted at segregated routes. Encouraging more people out of their cars will benefit society by improving our health and our environment.”“As a country we must change our transport priorities, ensuring that investment in high quality, reasonably priced public transport, and segregated active travel routes are prioritised. In these uncertain times in rural Scotland I aim to provide maximum help to our farmers and crofters. The Less Favoured Areas Scheme (LFASS) is a key means of financial support. I will maintain that effectively at existing levels and am working, with the sector on ways to deliver that. But the UK Government must also put its hand in its pocket. After all, we were promised that after Brexit the money would flow - from by the UK Treasury instead of the EU. These promises, whilst not committed to writing on the side of a bus, were nonetheless made by Messrs Gove and Johnson. I have - face to face - asked Mr Gove time after time to make good his promise. Thus far no clear answer has been forthcoming. In these uncertain times in rural Scotland I aim to provide maximum help to our farmers and crofters. Brought to you by:
Complete Lawn Makeover – a project this year ? Many of you will, in your darkest moments, consider giving up on your lawn… too far gone ….. wouldn’t know where to start ….. best to get it dug up and put down a new lawn ! Replacing a lawn can be very expensive however whether you plan to replace it with a new lawn or even slabs or gravel. Consider this, a worn-out lawn can actually be renovated in situ at a fraction of the cost of removing and replacing the whole thing. I have included here a Before and After picture taken just a few weeks apart. I suggest there are 4 stages in the process, and you could either try this yourself, probably with some hired machines, or get some help (probably best as you have to live with the results for years to come). 1. Hollow tine Aeration removes thousands of cores, reducing compaction and allowing air to move in the root zone, encouraging microbial activity and root development. 2. Severe Scarification removes as much thatch as possible, allowing the seed to find the soil surface which always aids germination. Once the thatch has been removed it has to be cleaned off the surface by either raking or sweeping, using a leaf sweeper.
4. Top Dressing covers the seed. Many think top dressing should be a sandy soil mix. We actually use a lawn compost, manufactured from recycled green waste and therefore environmentally friendly. It contains nutrient to assist existing grass and promote good germination from the seed and aids good microbial activity. This is applied at 2kg per m². All that’s required now is regular watering until the seed germinates (regular rainfall isn’t usually a problem in these parts). The best time to tackle this is June-Sept in Scotland, and that means starting planning now for your new lawn this summer. At around £2 per m² to renovate, compared with around £12 per m² to replace, it really is worth considering.
Before
3. Seeding should be applied at a rate of 20-25gms per m². The seed, being on the soil surface, puts it in direct contact with the material that will help it germinate; it is however open to the elements and can be disrupted by heavy winds and birds’ feasting.

By Kay Featherstone, Catherine Allinson
By Tana French One night changes everything for Toby Hennessey. A brutal attack leaves him damaged and traumatised, unsure even of the person he used to be. He seeks refuge at his family's ancestral home, the Ivy House, filled with memories of wild-strawberry summers and teenage parties with his cousins. But not long after Toby's arrival, a discovery is made: a skull, tucked neatly inside the old wych elm in the garden. As detectives begin to close in, Toby is forced to examine everything he thought he knew about his family, his past, and himself.

The Wonky Donkey By Craig Smith
The book behind the YouTube sensation of a granny reading this story to her grandchild, viewed over 3 million times. Who ever heard of a spunky hanky-panky cranky stinky-dinky lanky winky wonky donkey?
Grief. Anger. Joy. Fear. Distraction. Disgust. Hope. All emotions we expect to encounter over our lifetime. But what if this was every day? And what if your ability to manage them was the difference between life and death? For a doctor in Intensive Care this is part of the job. Fear in the eyes of a terminally ill patient who pleads with you to not let them die. Grief when you make a potentially fatal mistake. Disgust at caring for a convicted rapist. But there are also moments of joy, like the rare bright spots of lucidity for a dementia patient, or when the ward unexpectedly breaks into song.

We Must be Brave By Francesa Liardet Spanning the sweep of the twentieth century, We Must Be Brave is a luminous and profoundly moving novel about the people we rescue and the ways in which they rescue us back. December, 1940. As German bombs fall on Southampton, the city’s residents flee to the surrounding villages. In Upton village, amid the chaos, newly-married Ellen Parr finds a girl sleeping, unclaimed at the back of an empty bus. Little Pamela, it seems, is entirely alone. As the war rages on, love grows where it was least expected, surprising them all. But with the end of the fighting comes the realization that Pamela was never theirs to keep

February is the hardest month in the garden in some ways, and it can be difficult to be aware of the rumblings that are starting to happen in some of our plants and trees at the moment. In our ubiquitous Birch trees for example, the sap will be starting to rise in earnest any day. There are jobs to do in the garden this month to get everything ready for the spring, and it is always satisfying anyway to have a good pre-spring tidy up. With the lack of foliage on many shrubs, and other plants having died back for the winter, now is a great time to get really stuck into your flowerbeds getting debris, leaves and twigs tidied up. Be careful, however, of enthusiastic bulbs and herbaceous perennials, some of which are peaking above the surface already. Ornamental grasses need work at this time of year too. Deciduous grasses should be cut back, ready

Overgrown hedges can be renovated at this time of year as well. They will be clear of nesting birds at the moment and they will tolerate a hard cut, so if you need to do a major tidy or reduce the size of a hedge then now is the time. Be aware though that the likes of Cypress hedges, like Leylandii, will not re-grow if you cut past the green growth, so you need to be careful with them. Snowdrops are making an appearance right now, the last flowers of the winter. Snowdrop bulbs are really difficult to succeed with, so transplanting them ‘in the green’ is the best way to get them started. This means waiting until the flowers have gone over and then transplanting the individual plants. You can buy them like this, or perhaps a friendly neighbour might be kind enough to let you take some that you can then let naturalise in your own garden. Finally, lawn repairs are best carried out at this time of year. Re-cut the edges to flowerbeds and spike any boggy patches. If you spike patches in your lawn remember to brush in a sharp sand and top soil mixture. If you would like to see more of what I get up to, you can check out my website at www.angelhort.com

Outfit Moray's Cairngorm to Coast (aka C2C) event is a 100km hike and bike challenge that takes place against the backdrop of the magnificent Cairngorm National Park and along the beautiful scenery of the Dava Way. It starts at the Cairngorm Ski Centre carpark and from there, participants hike or, for the first time this year, bike to Grantown on Spey. The route takes them from the Sugar Bowl, through Glenmore Forest to Glenmore Lodge, on towards Nethy Forest and Lyngarry towards Nethy Bridge. There they join the Speyside Way to the Force Development Training Centre. Community Based Nature Projects The birds are in song, fresh green buds are appearing and all of the potential of spring is again awakening from winter’s hibernation. It’s the perfect time for us to re-connect with nature, and there is no better place to be than Nairn for the quality of our natural surroundings. As John Muir, the influential Scottish environmentalist wrote: “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilised people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity.” This is after all what brought me back to Nairn, my home town, where a stroll on the beach or a walk around the river is ‘being home’. And its not just the place, its the people that make the community. Returning, I have found old friends and new, and among them have found the kind of pride in Nairn that wants to improve our surroundings. Green Hive, Nairn’s environmental charity, embodies all of this, that Nairn’s natural environment is important the green spaces, the wildlife that live in our gardens, parks and links. More than this its a charity that gives everyone a chance to roll up their sleeves and contribute to nurturing and protecting our home growing fruit, planting, clearing litter, creating artworks, reducing the waste that threatens to overwhelm so many communities, not just our own. The Nairn Viewfield Community Orchard, now in its second spring is nurtured by Green Hive volunteers. Some view it as Louis McIntosh does, as “an extension
Poem by Julie Lawson of the Pen & I When Pen and I and Green Hive meet There’ll be a buzz about the street The words and lines will flow like honey Some green, some recycled, some wise, some funny With tales and songs to entertain Come celebrate our sweet domain
of our house, a place to come”. It’s a public space in the town with picnic benches and in time a free source of fresh fruit to those that care for it and for our wider community. This spring as we again begin to care for nature remember that nature can also help us to care for ourselves. John Muir’s belief in the healing powers of nature are backed by a vast and growing body of research showing that being in nature is linked to increased energy and a heightened sense of well-being. “Often when we feel depleted we reach for a cup of coffee, but research suggests a better way to get energised is to connect with nature” Richard Ryan, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester. This feels intuitive right? With an abundance of beautiful spots around Nairn, we can really take pleasure in our home town and make the most of what nature has to offer our own well-being. The community orchard is a particularly good place for this, with it’s young trees and all of the growth that will take place there this year, it’s a lovely place to stop, sit and return to throughout the year. And even better when you join a group like Green Hive and meet new people who share your interest where you can nurture your natural environment, nurture yourself and nurture our home. Kirsty Ellen Nairn resident and Green Hive Development Officer
Join Green Hive by visiting our website greenhive.co.uk, dropping in to our hub space at the Link Studios, Grant Street, or find us on facebook @NairnsGreenHive. There will be a fundraising event at Nairn’s Little Theatre on Friday 29th March at 7.30pm, organised by the Pen & I, Nairn’s creative writing group, in support of Green Hive, including an evening of prose and poetry and a raffle. Tickets £8 available at the door.
