The Editor

I was interested to hear something recently on the TV programme QI, hosted by Stephen Fry. He said that 60% of all the facts used in series 1 have subsequently been proven wrong. A sobering thought and makes me wonder why we are often so convinced of our own correctness when we can’t even rely on “known” facts. I shall try hard not to insist on me being right all the time in future!!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Call in the true Expert When Forrest Gump told us that ‘Life is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you’re going to get’, he didn’t say that the chocolates were called ‘Scottish Weather’. A month ago we were all out in our T-shirts; today, as I write, I’ve just driven back from Inverness through snow and sleet and my T-shirt is somewhere beneath my shirt, my jumper and my jacket! How lovely it was to come home to a nice warm house! And that’s another story - over this last weekend our boiler was broken and the house, without the central-heating on, was freezing cold. (Ok, I’m exaggerating, but that’s how it felt!) I guess today’s snow was preparing its visit. Many of us get so wimpy these days as we take for granted the gadgets and luxuries our grandparents, and maybe even our parents, couldn’t have imagined. We had a couple of stand-alone heaters going and they did a not-bad job in the rooms they were in, but temperatures in the rest of the house were perishing. Not being technically-minded, I’d

previously been given a couple of things to try and do to get the boiler going again - these techniques had worked other times, but not this time. All my efforts to get the place warmed up were in vain. So I called in help. Not wanting to involve a working tradesman if I didn’t have to, I contacted a friend who’s always helpful and extremely competent too. He tried a good many more tricks than I knew of and even phoned his other contacts to tap into their knowledge, but the result was the same - no improvement, no success, and no warmth. So Monday morning it was time to forget about the cost and call in an expert on this type of boiler. Within a few minutes he’d worked out the problem, got the necessary spare-part from his van, and got the boiler firing on all cylinders again. ‘If only all my jobs were so easy!’, he said cheerily as he left. When I got the chance to think about all this later on, it struck me that there was a bit of a gospel parallel about it all. Spiritually speaking, we human beings are cold and lifeless without God’s fire and warmth in our lives. All our own

efforts at self-help and self-improvement are as futile in finding God as my useless efforts to get the boiler on. Even turning to other people, for all their kindness and goodwill, gets us nowhere if all they can offer is good guess-work and some theoretical knowledge – many have looked for God and failed by turning to false teaching, false religions and false prophets with no correct answers. Only when you call in the true Expert, Jesus Christ, can you find true help, true life and true spiritual warmth. He alone has the ‘spare part’ that changes everything - the new heart that he gives to all who simply come to the right place and ask. ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened’, says Jesus, ‘and you will find rest for your souls’ Matthew 11:28-29. No job is too difficult or too complicated or too far gone for him – and that’s good news for all of us!

Where Do All these Weeds Keep Coming From ? Weeds are just wild flowers in the wrong place !

We apply a weedkill 3 times each season for our

Someone else said that, not just me. There are two

customers, and we don’t really expect to have

basic types of lawn weed, as indeed there are

any weeds at all by the 2nd season. As I said

elsewhere in the garden; annual weeds, with a lifetime

earlier, it is surprisingly straightforward to turn a

of one season mainly; and perennial weeds which

cabbage patch into a clean piece of lawn.

come back year on year. I have come to recognise two distinct timetables for them to appear. The “earlies” include daisies and dandelions, then later weeds such as clover and buttercups, which don’t really come up in these parts until late spring. They can originate from seed from a previous generation, and some will have overwintered in the ground. They can also arrive on the wind, or even from bird droppings.

For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £15 per qtr, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 500,000 customers and 200 branches across the UK, we are the local franchise, based in Nairn and cover the whole Moray Firth area.

It is actually usually quite straightforward to bankrupt the seed bed, to break the supply chain, and have almost no weeds in a lawn at all. It does however need timing of weedkill application. It also needs done two years in a row to achieve clearance, and then every year to keep it clear, mainly of annual weeds by then. The best time to apply the first weedkill is spring, at the first appearance of young weeds. The second application should go on 6 weeks later to catch the 2nd flush (later weeds). Young weeds put up much less resistance to a weedkill. As the summer progresses, weedkilling will become less and less successful. There are two classes of weedkill products. One class is a “contact” weedkill which destroys the leaf, and prevents further plant growth. The other is a “systemic”, which gets into the leaf, and then gets drawn down into the plant system, eventually reaching the root maybe two weeks later. The aim is to kill the weed at the root so it’s permanent.
