I was rather hoping that all the political dialogue might have died down once “the referendum” had happened but it seems like politicians will always find something else to talk and argue about. I wonder if we will ever find politicians that actually agree. As George Bernard Shaw once said: “He knows nothing; and he thinks he knows everything. That points clearly to a political career.”

Words by the Wayside "And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind. Then said The Lord unto Isaiah, Go forth now..." (Isaiah 7:33)
Christian! Do you hunger and thirst after righteousness? Do rivers of waters flow down your cheeks because this people keep not your Lord's words? If your heart is moved as your Lord's heart is always moved towards the people who know Him not, then go forth too. Trust and obey for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus than to trust and obey. Do that which you can, have faith in God and doubt not. Witness of Him.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS ...we have confidence in a God of love and of hope... November is a time for reflection and remembering. In our tradition we begin the month with the great festival of All Saints, celebrating the lives, not just of the great and the good; but of all people who have gone before us and lived lives of faithful service teaching and communicating the gospel.
significant this year because this is the centenary anniversary of the beginning of World War I. The “war to end all wars” somehow still epitomises the horror and carnage of war and the damage war causes to body, mind and spirit. And the poetry of those dark days still speaks to us about tragedy, sacrifice, remembrance and hope.
Then, the following day we have a much more solemn and reflective service, sometimes called the remembrance of All Souls. This is a much more intimate kind of remembering, recalling those who have influenced our lives, those who were close to us in our life and now belong to a greater glory. It gives us a chance to think of family members and friends and give thanks once again for their lives and the way they touched ours.
The gospel too, has much to say about hope in the face of sadness and loss. Towards the end of his life we read of Jesus, time and again taking his friends aside to prepare them for his suffering and death and to help them begin to grasp that he would always be with them, In one of those conversations he talks about the nature of love and says, “the greatest love a person can have for his friends is to give his life for them” (John 15:13) and then he goes on to say, “You are my friends if you do what I command you”.
For the last hundred years, those festivals of the Church have paved the way for a different and very poignant remembrance for our nation and for many nations across the world. November is the time where we pause, keep silent and recall once again the sacrifice of generations past in war and conflict. Particularly
God’s great love for us is shown in Jesus’ sacrifice. In taking upon himself to share our human life with all its hurts and woes, its suffering and pain; Jesus has shown us that God is with us in all of life and walks alongside us, feeling our fear and doubt in the face of darkness and despair.

So as we reflect on the past and remember those who we know and those who gave their lives in the cause of this nation’s peace, so we have confidence in a God of love and of hope who knows us and all that ails us, who understands our fears and who walks the journey of life with us. St. Paul in his letter to the Romans, speaks with confidence, “nothing can separate us from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:37-39). As we remember, we can also give thanks, that Jesus, sharing in our life, wholly, fully and without reservation, draws us ever closer to God and gives us confidence and trust in a love that is everlasting.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES Inverness Castle should be the jewel in the crown of Highland Tourism. Instead, when visitors walk up to its entrance, they encounter a Group 4 security van rather than a visitor information centre, clan museum, art gallery far less a restaurant, shop or cafe. Last month a working group convened by myself as Tourism Minister and the Highland Council has begun work on the best alternative use of the Castle. This depends upon finding a new home for the Inverness Sheriff Court - and the funding for that. But, I am hopeful that can be achieved. In Holyrood, in the first week back after the referendum I led a debate on accessible tourism and MSPs from all parties made it a good debate. One startling fact: 4 out of 5 people with a disability do not enjoy an annual holiday or a break. I then travelled to Brussels to put this case, along with Visitscotland, to the EU Commission and other countries. We can and should do much more to help those with a disability access something that many of us take for granted.
Every November we remember those who fought and died to protect our country and push back violent aggression and extremism in Europe and around the world. I hope to join my fellow Highlanders in Aviemore and Inverness again on Sunday 9th to honour the sacrifice many of our fathers, sons and brothers made in hope of a more peaceful future. Of course, 2014 is unique as we commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the outbreak of the “war to end all wars.” Sadly, we know this was not true. There is still violence and extremism, and although it takes on a different form to that posed in the early 20th century, we must meet with equally determined hearts. The barbaric atrocities being carried out by the terrorist group Isil in Iraq must be countered. They have murdered hostages from the UK and other countries and they threaten attacks around the world. When the world was threatened 100 years ago, we did not stand idly by. As a new enemy confronts us, it is right that we stand up to be counted with our coalition partners. Danny Alexander MP

New menu’s a real winner! My husband and I don't dine out too frequently so when the opportunity presented itself to try out the New Menus at the Old Mill in Brodie we were “licking our lips” in anticipation. In short – the meals exceeded all our expectations – The new menus are simply fantastic! The Old Mill Inn is easy to find along the A96, just along from Brodie Countryfare, and has ample parking. We arrived at 7pm on a Sunday evening finding the pub quite busy but not completely full. The waiter told us that it was a good policy to always book in advance. We were welcomed and directed to our reserved table that was clean and comfortable. Drinks were served while we pondered over the new restaurant menu. There was also a selection of specials to choose from. I started with roast tomato soup which was a delicious choice and an interesting variation on the standard tomato soup – packed with bags of flavour. It arrived promptly and was served with freshly baked soda bread. My husband had the Cullen Skink which was pure heaven – the best we'd had in ages. Many of the main courses sounded like wonderful combinations making it difficult to choose! We settled for the loin of venison and the pan fried seabream. Beautifully presented, and served with extra side vegetables the meals were a real treat. The shredded red cabbage and black kale were cooked perfectly, and complimented the tender venison and Pomme Anna well. The ‘gin and tonic’ chocolate sauce was a lovely addition. The fish was beautifully tender and tasty and the gnocchi (a personal favourite) were just right. To finish, we dived into a warm sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and fresh raspberries served on meringue with cointreau syrup, topped with cream. The desserts were a delightful indulgence to complete our meal. A big thank you to Kevin, the owner, and all the staff who were both attentive and polite throughout our meal making us feel most at home. The new menus are a real winner!

The High Street Bites Back Reports of our beloved High Streets in demise may prove to be a bit premature. Forres High Street is witnessing a bit of a revival lately. Admittedly there are still some charity shops in evidence but there are also signs of a healthy entrepreneurial spirit that our nations are known for. Home Hardware took over the old Mackenzie & Cruickshank building and is now a firmly established, profitable business. More recently only in the last few weeks we have seen a new Fine Foods shop (Philp's), a new Beauty Shop on Tollbooth Street (DK's) and, into the Younies old shop, goes Home Comforts by Sandra. We caught up with owner, Sandra, recently to try and find out why she had taken the move onto the high street. Sandra is born and bred in Moray (Elgin actually) and originally started trading in one of the smaller shops on Tollbooth Street in Forres, mainly making up curtains from customers' own fabric. As her reputation spread and business grew Sandra then moved to an adjacent slightly larger building and then about 11 years ago settled into Orchard Road (again to accommodate her growing business), when she was joined by Stella who has been with Sandra ever since. Then, last summer, Home Comforts helped with a pop-up shop in Forres High Street for 6 weeks which was a huge success, sufficient to prompt them to start to contemplate a permanent residence on the High Street. But the fear of a combination of high rates and rent meant this did not become a reality until the recent floods when the search suddenly became a necessity and they fortunately were able to strike a good deal at Number 126, High Street. In the first few weeks business has been very good with customers enjoying her huge range of “Ready-Made” curtains, Roman Blinds, Bespoke Cushions and Soft Furnishings. Sandra is now looking forward to a busy Christmas period with people buying those “perfect wee gifts” that “you just can't find elsewhere”. Please help to support our local businesses by shopping at Home Comforts by Sandra to be found at 126 High Street, Forres. Tel 01309 671617. Happy shopping!!
