PASTORAL LETTER AND CHURCH MEETINGS

To the moon Sixty years ago some men were digging a deep wide hole. Passers by asked, “What are you doing?” and one man answered, “We are going to the moon”, only to hear the retort, “Is that not the wrong direction?” No! They were preparing a foundation for the launch pad. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, speaks about foundations. If there is something wrong or inadequate with our foundations, then whatever we build will be faulty and fragile. Foundations are vital. Jesus, taking an illustration from his building days, shows us two men. One is wise and one is foolish. Each builds a house, and when the construction is complete they look the same. From the outside you could not tell the difference. There came a fierce violent storm. The rain was heavy, and the water level rose. The wind blew and battered the two houses, and that of the wise man weathered the storm, but the house of the foolish man ‘fell with a great crash’. Jesus is teaching, “Everyone who

hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock”. For some 18 years, Jesus had been familiar with methods used in the building trade. The wise man had dug deep, until he is able to build on solid rock. He took time to excavate. His costs are higher. The progress will be slower, as he removes all the dirt and rubbish that separates him from the rock. When the winds and rains and storms come, whose house would you rather be in? Jesus points to two men here, and there appears to be no obvious difference. They look alike. They may wear the same labels, have the same interests, and even be neighbours, but what is crucially important and vital is what is in their unseen foundation. But it is there! Or, not there! Jesus is speaking about the long term. We are experiencing a shaking going in our world today, and everything that can be shaken will be shaken – “so that what cannot be shaken will remain”. teaching, became committed men, and we need committed disciples today who are committed to the Jesus Christ of the Bible. That may seem a strange thing to say, but there are many pictures of Jesus going the rounds, and many are false and fraudulent. An inadequate picture of Jesus Christ will be of no use when the storms come. Daniel made some foundational decisions when he was quite young and he lived a life of useful practical service for seventy years, being promoted to a highly responsible position. The foundations we lay, no matter what our age, can determine and influence how we react when the storms come. “Whoever hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

Cllr Cmaca commented that officers had asked for a deferral to the recent planning application as the ePlanning site was down for a number of days and therefore the public could not enter comments regarding this application. the previous planning application for the bus station site was for 12 flats with small retail unit below in a 4 storey building. gK and graham Vine mentioned that this application had been withdrawn. however, the current planning application is for a block of 4 storeys with 16 flats and no retail unit. as the planning application was deferred, a proposal for site visit was put forward prior to the next meeting. this visit will be on tuesday, 25 September 2012. gK expressed concern about the height of the proposed block of flats. this would need to be clearly shown to those taking part in the site visit. in the previous application, comparison had been made with the Police Station, but the Police Station is 8.8 metres, and if you allow for the embankment approx 1 or 2 metres, total height of the Police Station is approx 11.5 metres. this new proposed block is 14.8 metres which is quite considerably higher. gK was not convinced that Councillors had been made fully aware of the height of the proposed building. Discussion regarding how the height/scale of building could be presented for site visit included suggestions of utilisation of flag on fire station, cherry picker, etc Ry indicated the importance that planners realise how out of proportion this building would be with the surroundings. gK presented a scale drawing indicating the height of proposed building in relation to the tree line. Ry requested more of these to be circulated. gV requested that the Nairn Councillors press highland Council to have this latest planning application for the bus station re-advertised. the deferral was granted as the public were unable to submit comments before the deadline page 8 - october 2012

date. unless this is re-advertised, the public will be unaware that comments can be resubmitted. bS/gV both commented that the ePlanning site was down for several days and could not be accessed. Comments made by any public agency, SePa, government officials and by the community should be visible to all interested parties. aCtioN: Nairn elected Councillors – readvertising planning application for bus station. Des Scholes suggested that after the bus station site visit, rather than go back to inverness, officials utilise Nairn Court house to debate and take a decision. DS felt this would be good for local democracy enabling those interested from Nairn to observe without having to travel through to inverness. aCtioN: NWCC to write letter recommending that the planning committee meet in the Nairn Court house Chamber on 25 September, 2012. Ry wished elected Councillors to be aware that there is strong feeling against this planning proposal from NWCC residents. • Affordable housing

Note: elected Council members have taken no part in this discussion. by commented that Community councils spend much time and resources commenting on planning applications, charettes and contributing to local plan, but that this seems to be overturned in favour of affordable housing. bS said that this application raises number of issues. gK emphasised the scale and size of this proposed development. bS commented that there was little point in consultation about local plans, and little value in having official planning guidance, if all the provisions in the plans, and all the planning objectives, were dismissed and set aside when the application was for affordable housing. the official report on this application was unbalanced and unprofessional. it implied that the need for housing trumps everything else. gK felt Nairn had no tel: 01309 690063

objection to affordable housing, but there are other areas rather than the town centre to build houses. Quoting from a local resident, bS asked, “What hope is there for Nairn as a business retail centre if every time site comes up it becomes residential housing?” in the past any site that has fallen vacant has been turned into housing i.e. macrae & Dicks garage, highland hotel, Royal Walk area and former ashers bakery. although each application is considered on its merits, the wider implication of converting other premises into housing in the town centre, in effect squeezes out other kinds of business. bS argued that the purpose of local plans is to designate areas for retail, business and housing. bS was disappointed at the dismissal of the local plans and zoning in order to put housing in whatever site comes vacant. by questioned whether there was conflict of interest. he noted that the Council had secured Scottish government grant funding to invest in Nairn before 2015, but who receives this grant? is the Council building the flats or the developer? by asked elected Councillors there to ask these questions and get back to NWCC. Cllr Cmca assured NWCC that planning would follow procedure. bS said that it was reasonable to accept that housing policy and thC objectives on housing are one of the material considerations. it is quite reasonable for officials responsible for housing to provide advice to the committee on housing policy. but it was improper for a housing official to advocate approval of a particular development, simply in order to meet a housing numbers target of 16 flats, which had apparently already been included in a highland Council submission to the Scottish government. it was also inappropriate for a decision to be made in order to obtain funds by a specific deadline. bS has made this point to the highland Council.

We may not have had the brightest weather, but this summer was lit up by the Olympic Games. After just a few short weeks, the eyes of the world turned on Britain once more as the Paralympics got underway. The Olympic tradition has always been about stretching the limits of human physical and mental capability and the Paralympics are no different. For that reason, they belong firmly at the heart of the international Olympic movement. The Highlands played an important part at the beginning of the 2012 Paralympic story when the flame was lit by the Scouts on the summit of Ben Nevis. Congratulations to all the athletes who took part in the games, particularly our local champions - David Smith, Karen Darke and Craig Maclean. At the time of writing this, David Smith has picked up his first gold for Team GB – hopefully one of many more to come.

As the local MSP for Inverness, and as the Minister for Tourism, I was asked at a special screening of Brave at Eden Court, to introduce, with a short speech, one of the actors, and the producer and director of the film. The actor was local man Kevin McKidd. I am told by the female half of the population that this Elgin loon is really pretty dishy. Anyway, Fiona Natasha and I present ourselves at Eden Court, to make the speech and then watch the film. The occasion was far more glitzy than politicians are used to. The outfits were of the Hollywood type. Local Singer Peigi Barker and her brother Donald were there to perform the song from the film: heart-breaking stuff. It was so beautiful, so pure in sound that I said in my remarks that the hankies were needed to be used before the film had begun. I made a short speech about the film – and the chance for Scottish tourism to an audience at Eden Court, and then introduced the real stars. I then went to take up my seat with Fiona, and our 4 year old Natasha. Unfortunately, at this point, because perhaps of the excitement of it all – my wee one was sick on my shoe! Obviously she was not feeling well, and was upset so she wanted to go home – which we did back to Boat of Garten, and so I did not get to see the film. i did say, that so far as i am aware at least, this has been the only occasion in over twenty years of public speaking that anyone has actually been physically sick after listening to what i said!

This month, most gardeners will be doing their last cut of the year and putting away their mowers for the season - a pretty disappointing season in the garden too. Hopeless optimists that we are though, we will be planning a better season next year, hopefully without the damage caused by late spring snows and without the terribly wet conditions that made even getting the grass cut a struggle. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had a very disrupted season, having to rearrange and redo many lawn treatments because of the poor weather. You may wonder what a lawn treatment business does all winter; I did when I first made enquiries about buying the Green Thumb Moray Firth franchise. In fact, the off-season is our busiest time of the year as we have to pack in all the machinery jobs customers have asked us to do for them, principally aeration and scarifying. Aeration we do with a big hollow-core tining machine which, at ÂŁ4,000 per machine, is not a piece of kit most weekend gardeners have in the back of the shed for

This is typically done either before Xmas or maybe in March, at the end of the winter (keen types might do it twice). Many folk have small electric scarifiers or rakes that work very well at removing annual moss from the surface of the lawn. A blade scarifier though, removes the thatch, which provides the habitat for moss to flourish again. We use them (obviously) for lawns with thatch, or some customers hire them and do it themselves. Either way, any gardening book or TV programme will suggest you scarify in the off-season, particularly if you are prone to moss. Both tasks are pretty dirty and physically demanding however, so best to pick a nice day! Enjoy!

500 g (1 lb 2 oz) minced venison SMALL ONION FINELY CHOPPED EGG TBSP PLAIN FLOUR TBSP CHOPPED FRESH MIXED HERBS SUCH AS THYME AND PARSLEY TBSP EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL G OZ SPAGHETTI SALT AND PEPPER SHREDDED FRESH BASIL TO GARNISH

Method 1. -IX TOGETHER THE VENISON CHOPPED ONION EGG FLOUR AND HERBS UNTIL WELL COMBINED 3EASON WITH SALT AND PEPPER $IVIDE THE MIXTURE INTO PORTIONS Lightly flour your hands, then roll the portions into neat balls. 2. Heat the olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan or flameproof casserole and fry the meatballs, rolling them gently from time to time, for 8â&#x20AC;&#x201C;10 minutes or until they are browned all over. (Brown the meatballs in batches, if necessary.) Use a draining spoon to remove the meatballs from the pan and set them aside. 3. For the sauce, add the onion, red pepper, mushrooms, celery and garlic to the JUICES IN THE FRYING PAN AND COOK FOR MINUTES STIRRING FREQUENTLY 0OUR IN THE RED wine and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat slightly and simmer for about 5 MINUTES OR UNTIL THE LIQUID HAS REDUCED BY HALF !DD THE STOCK TOMATOES WITH THEIR JUICE AND THE BOUQUET GARNI TO THE PAN and bring back to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. 5. Return the meatballs to the pan and turn them over in the sauce. Simmer gently for 10 minutes. 6. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti in boiling water for 10â&#x20AC;&#x201C;12 minutes, or according to the packet instructions, until al dente. Drain well. 4ASTE THE SAUCE AND ADJUST THE SEASONING IF NECESSARY $ISCARD THE BOUQUET garni. Divide the spaghetti among 4 serving plates or bowls and top with the meatballs and sauce. Garnish with sour cream, paprika and fresh chopped parsley.

A few months ago I was sitting at my desk in the room at the front of the house I use as an office, when my concentration was broken by a barely audible little song. I looked around the room, there was a Robin sitting on the back of a chair a metre away. The song was repeated and I was looked at very directly. I opened the window but the robin refused to move, let alone fly out. As I went out of my office across the hall into the sitting room, the Robin followed, cocked its head on one side and repeated the song, this time sitting on the television. I knew what the Robin wanted. To get to my office you come in the back door, through the kitchen, along the front hall and turn left. This is a route the Robin knows well and uses when the back door is open and I need “training”. Like many people, we have bird feeders in the garden and during the late Spring and early Summer they seem to be the main source of food for the local breeding House sparrows who consume nearly a kilo of food a day. Last Winter we started to feed mealworms, the Black birds and Robins really seemed to appreciate this. A couple of Robins started to watch for signs of us coming out of the house. They would make it very clear that they wanted more meal worms, and as time went on they became quite happy to eat these from the hand.

This Spring two pairs of Robins nested in the garden and our “training” was stepped up a gear, I guess by the male birds who were feeding their mates sitting on eggs. If there were no meal worms out the Robins would look directly through the window into the house, and continue to watch us until we put out more mealworms. Back in May we spent a couple of weeks in the Cairngorms, and while we were away our neighbour checked the garden and filled the bird feeders. On returning I noticed a small pile of bird droppings on the door step. I thought this was a little odd until I surmised that a Robin had spent a lot of time sitting on the back door handle waiting for someone to come out and feed him. Over the past months the demand from the Robins has reduced, the young have left the hedge and I assume they are looking after themselves. However, the male birds seem to be feeding the females again, perhaps they have laid more eggs. I am looking forward to my work being interrupted again in a couple of weeks and for my “training” to be resumed. In the meantime, the local starlings have discovered the mealworms and the Blackbirds nesting in the clematis on top of our oil tank are feeding them to their young. No chance of stopping our regular mealworm order! Briefly, and on more serious note, wild birds eat all year round and feeding them in the Winter can really help them through difficult cold spells.

The Sky’s the Limit One of my very favourite quotes during my time here in Lossiemouth relates to the weather and its ever changing nature … “just wait a minute and it’ll change”. Autumn skies here on the Moray Firth are particularly beautiful in my experience. Sky and cloud photography is one of my most pleasurable pastimes firstly because there are never two sunsets the same and it does change, very quickly and gives you a fresh canvass to capture. Photographing skies during daylight is relatively simple because you have the light available to you. Remember the definition of photography is drawing with light. Photographing at dusk is very different. You don’t have as much light available to you. You can be anywhere to see and capture the perfect sunset. Now is the time of year to keep your eyes peeled. One tip I’ve learnt for capturing sunset and sky shots is always look behind you. You can look ahead trying to find your shot but don’t forget what’s going on elsewhere.

as a point of reference or if you live closer into town, you can use silhouettes of buildings to give your shot a point of focus. If you don’t feel you are experienced enough with your camera yet to set it up for this specific type of shot, most digitals will have a Sunset setting or the like. This will automatically set light levels, depth of field etc. What is important to remember for dusk time/sunset photography is capturing the level of light available to you. One blink and the shot is lost. Therefore, you need to set your shutter speed higher. This will in turn capture the movement of the sky inhabitants against the light available to you by sucking in the light to the shot. There is a term in photography called ‘noise’. This is prevalent in dark or low light photography. This is when your shot has fuzziness which may distort your shot. This can be overcome by adjusting settings. Get comfortable with your camera. Know both of your capabilities so far and snap, snap and snap some more. You will find your own way. Before long you’ll be shifting and twiddling and clicking without thinking about it. You can achieve some wonderful photographs through watching the sky. No painting can compare to the wonderful dramatic presence the clouds can offer in real time but a well shot photograph can come close. The camera is not as clever as the human eye. We are very fortunate to have this gift. But get intimate with your camera and keep at it and you’ll surprise yourself how close to a perfect capture you’ll come.

From my own personal experience try not to take your dusk sunset shot when it’s too windy. It will cause reverberation through the camera causing movement and thus blur. All modern digitals have a function where you can adjust the effects of wind but it’s not always brilliant. I love the natural warmth and depth of a good Moray sunset. There are many layers of cloud, air and light which all contribute to your composition. You may live on the coast where you’ll have the sea and mountains
