“A change is as a good as a rest.” I’m not sure who first said that and I’m not entirely sure I agree. It’s certainly nice to have a rest but is it “a change” that will bring this about. I think sometimes we convince ourselves that, by its very nature, change is good whereas I often find that it can bring challenges which it is all too easy to underestimate. Not always, but sometimes, we may actually be better off sticking with what we know or at least trying to minimise the volume of change that we take on at any one time. The theory that change is always good sounds a bit like “the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence” - well I have a road next to mine!!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Let us not forget about the blood and sacrifice! Back in July, we drove all the way from Scotland to Austria for our summer holidays. The long journey to Austria made me think about some European history and personal memories. It also raised a few questions, too. How did I, a Scotsman, manage to marry an Austrian woman and bring up three of my children in Austria? The simple answer is that there has been peace in most of Europe during my life time. However, that peace came through many great sacrifices and battles. I was also reminded of the true horrors that took place 100 years ago at the Battle of the Somme, in France. This was a brutal battle that lasted for 141 days during 1916, which ended on the 19th November after roughly one million fatalities. Somehow, all the horrors of the Somme can easily be forgotten after 100 years. But we are always reminded about the superficial and artificial horrors of Halloween from many advertisements that we are bombarded with at this time of year. Obviously, retailers want people to buy their creepy products to make large profits. Anyway, there are so many
factual sources out there that give us some kind of insight regarding the grotesque reality of day-to-day life on the battlefield of the Somme, which we should not forget. For example, one soldier and poet that has impressed me was a man called, Wilfred Edward Salter Owen, who wrote a poem called Inspection. Owen was a man with a deep faith in God who actively taught Bible classes and led prayer meetings until he enrolled, as a commissioned officer, in the British Army. As an educated person from the respectable lower middle class - he was still a naïve young man when he enlisted. Initially, he was shocked by the uncouthness of the men under his command. Owen soon grew to respect and love them as comrades condemned to face the terrors of death together. As an officer, Owen had to inspect his men on the battlefield. In the course of one such inspection, he saw a stain in a soldier’s uniform and reprimanded him for appearing on parade with dirty clothes. Only later did he find out that the stain had been the man’s blood. Therefore, the theme of blood and sacrifice is brought to an intense climax at the end of the poem. This theme also

reminds us that we will all stand before God who will inspect us one day. Ironically, the poem might be suggesting unwittingly that without applying the sacrificial blood of Jesus to our lives no-one will pass God’s inspection! Now, the sacrifices and the shed blood of so many brave soldiers have saved us from all kinds of evil powers over the years. Nevertheless, their courageous sacrifices could never save us from sin because only Jesus’ sacrifice and shed blood can do that for us. Yet, the atrocious death, which Jesus endured on a cross occurred for a reason more than 2000 years ago! Why did Jesus die? Well, He became the sacrificial Lamb that John the Baptist referred to in John 1:29, ‘Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’ What does that mean? When sin is dealt with through Jesus’ shed blood, we can know the deep inner peace of God in our lives - even as we face our own daily battles. Let us not forget about the blood and sacrifice of Jesus, either! Rev J Dereck Grant (Church of God Nairn & Railway Mission Chaplain)

Hearty, Wholesome & Flavoursome Early evening, after work and there’s a nip in the air. It’s Autumn and my friend and I are hungry. Baked Camembert - bursting with flavour, lovely, smooth & luxurious starter. Soft, creamy middle and oozing with yumminess! complemented by beautifully sized, crisp fingers of bread to dip. Scrumptious! Scottish Smoked Salmon - Tasty and fresh. This was nicely presented, very good amount of meaty salmon, slice of chunky bread & complemented by a light, crisp salad and capers. Chicken Tikka - great colour, lovely chunky vegetables and a fabulous aroma. The rice was cooked perfectly & very good sized, balanced portions. Naan bread fantastically light with just the right consistency of chew and crisp. Very enjoyable. Spicy Marinated Chicken Skewers - medium spiced and very tasty chunks of meat. Good portion of crispy chips and salad. Perfect infusion of flavours, not overbearing and the chicken tender. Nicely done - Simple but delicious. Lemon Tart - a wonderful, decadent, shortcrust, rich tart with a zesty lemon filling, delicious without being overwhelming. Light, scrumptious and served with a tangy, sweet and tantalising raspberry. All the flavours complemented each other extremely well, making this an absolutely a top notch dessert, couldn't fault it at all. Compliments to the Chef, Briony Thom. My friend and I left very satisfied & happy to report that The Red Lion caters for all ages, providing a nice homely lounge, an extremely good value for money & varied menu. They have a really nice bunch of friendly staff, who gave great service and a chef that cooks beautiful food. A highly recommended place to go where you are guaranteed to sit comfortably, enjoy a good sized, hearty, meal - nicely presented and promptly served by attentive staff - and spend a relaxed time in a very sociable warm & friendly atmosphere. Nice to see a noticeable presence of the proprietor, Carrie Custodio, who was friendly, respectful and who clearly had command of a well managed, & equally friendly, team of staff.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES The accomplishment of Scottish athletes with an incredible 13 medals and the record team GB haul, shows that with the right level of commitment, great results can be achieved. I doubt there are many who would not have marvelled at the performance of those athletes. Achievements such as these, only happen with hard work, talent and, that ‘so often’ missing ingredient - investment in facilities. Investment that is also needed in community facilities to set the environment for success for those who often simply do not get the chance to get involved. I have no doubt that our success at the games, has inspired many people and we should want to see more of that for the Highlands. We cannot underestimate the positive influence seeing athletes like Andy Murray perform well at the games has on our young people. We must ensure that they have the opportunity to emulate these champions and have the facilities to turn their
dreams into reality.

Harley Davidsons are of course for ever associated, for my generation, with the1969 film "Easy Rider." Its two main characters, played by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, were Harley riding hippies who after completing a drug deal in California then travelled cross country in search of spiritual truth. These days, however, the average Harley Owner is just as likely to be a stockbroker, actuary or lawyer. And ( I trust) less trouble to the local constabulary.

GreenThumb
UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP
2013
The Moss Season Approaches We live in a cool maritime climate, which is ideal for moss to thrive. You cannot change the weather, and you cannot banish moss permanently, but you can control its’ infestation with some basic good husbandry, and a bit of work. I’m talking about scarifying again of course. This will also be featuring in all the TV gardening programmes and magazines about now, and it is what we at GreenThumb spend all winter doing. We will have 3 heavy blade scarifier machines out clearing (at the last count) 700 lawns round here. – oh joy !
for the grass, and some recovery time is required, during which time it looks pretty shabby. Doing it off-season allows recovery, then you put on a spring feed, and have a season of decent grass to mow. Enjoy !
Scarifying moss and thatch out is undertaken to clear the lawn surface of all the dead material and moss to allow fresh grass plants to dominate the lawn environment, providing the best conditions for absorbsion of sunlight, moisture and nutrients. If this task is overlooked (or avoided), the following season there is even more build-up, and in no time, the lawn is more moss than grass. There’s no getting away from it, this is hard work and often generates haystacks of debris (see picture). It can be done by hand with a spring rake, but some mechanical help is really the best option for anything more than quite a small lawn. You can hire a blade scarifier for the day at some garden machinery centres, but be warned, these are pretty vicious machines and it’s only too easy to “plough” your garden, and then need a new lawn ! An “average” lawn usually takes 2 experienced crew half a day to do with machines and blowers.
For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with half a million customers, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Contact Alastair or Fiona for a FREE LAWN
The best time to tackle this is either side of Christmas. Scarifying is never recommended in the growing season because the very nature of the exercise is pretty traumatic
