Summer went by in a blur for me. One minute I was looking forward to the longer days and nights and then, all of a sudden, the temperatures seem to be edging down and it’s getting darker earlier again. I think I must be a summer fiend. - I love wearing shorts and fiercely resist the onset of Autumn, although I do really love the autumn colours greens slowly morphing to browns, yellows and reds. And then, of course, we can start looking forward to Christmas!! well, perhaps not just yet!!

The large queue outside Nairn Free Church, waiting to get in for the morning service, would be extraordinary enough. But the fact that it was an hour before the service was due to start, and that folk just wanted to make sure they weren’t going to be amongst those unfortunate enough to have to be turned away, that made it even more remarkable. Some of them, of course, could be directed to the nearby alternative venues where the service was being live-streamed by video-link, enabling them to participate as part of the crowd in that way, but others for whom even that wasn’t possible would have to just watch the live broadcast online wherever they could make themselves comfortable. In my dreams! It would be lovely indeed to imagine there was such a demand locally for the preaching of God’s word and for the praising of his name – but why not? All God’s people would love to see such days return as were once known in parts of the Highlands and, indeed, throughout Scotland. Same God, same gospel, same message, same Bible – why not? We pray that such days might be seen again as girls and boys and men and women would seek ‘the wisdom that is from above’

(James 3 17), finding the answers to all their questions and the solutions to all their problems in the wonderful gospel of the Lord Jesus, just as millions and millions of others do around the world today. On one level it’s a dream – but it’s not complete fantasy by any means. I’m just back from Keswick in the Lake District where, every year for the last 142 years, the Keswick Convention meets, and thousands of Christians from different churches all over the nation gather to hear the preaching of God’s word and to enjoy friendship, fellowship and a restful holiday in that beautiful part of the country. And it was just as described above. The large main tent holds about three thousand people at a time and, if you wanted to be guaranteed a seat there, you’d have to turn up in very good time or else be ready to go and watch it in one of the alternative nearby venues, (which was still a mighty fine way to experience it, by the way!) The preaching and teaching were excellent, the camaraderie and fellowship diverse and inspiring, and the singing of gathered thousands at a time just so moving and uplifting – a seriously recommended holiday break for anyone

willing to travel, and not even very far either! Our local churches can’t hope to compete Sunday by Sunday with that kind of elevated experience, but the essentials are all there nevertheless – the preaching of the word, the centrality of worshipping God, and the fellowship of the Lord’s people. It would be wonderful to have to move Nairn Free Church to a bigger site in order to accommodate the crowds wanting to meet and worship there, and every other church in Nairn would say the same thing too. But why not dream and pray? It’s happened before and, by God’s grace, it can happen again. Around the world the Christian church grows by tens of thousands every single day as Christ builds his kingdom. May there be many, many more Nairnites added to that number before the time comes when the last of the flock is gathered in and the time of opportunity is gone forever. Dream on, pray on!

We had a family holiday in Copenhagen this summer – a city where 50% of folk commute by bike every day. Even my dad - at 73yrs old – took advantage of the nearly 400km of cycle lanes to get around. New cycleways are flourishing locally too – including the River Lossie cycleway and the Inverness South Campus bridge The benefits are obvious. The number of commuters choosing to cycle to work regularly in Inverness has increased to nearly 10% and a recent study shows that pedalling commuters are less stressed. We might not be able to ditch cars entirely up here, but I for one will continue to promote active transport, including safe cycling, to improve congestion and reduce our carbon footprint AND our stress levels.

It’s great to see so many visitors from all over Europe and the world enjoying all that the Highlands and Islands have to offer – including our amazing food and drink products which make the most of our natural larder. Protecting the provenance of our quality produce is vital to our export success and it’s worrying to think that our GM free status might now be under threat. Currently, discussions are being held in advance of new trade deals with the likes of the US and Japan. Without being able to have a say, Scotland could find itself having to accept foodstuffs made with GM cultivated ingredients and we could lose one of the unique selling points of the number one contributor to our economy.

Scotland’s reputation as a world leader in renewables was bolstered by last week’s news that the sector has already generated enough electricity this year to supply in excess of Scotland’s demand for six days. Our renewables sector is a fantastic success story and I am delighted to see it grow from strength to strength, with the Highlands and Islands well and truly leading the way. Already more than half of all gross electricity consumption in Scotland comes from renewables. As well as helping to tackle climate change, the sector continues to attract investment, creating desirable skilled jobs in the Highlands & Islands and across Scotland. I will be visiting some of the local businesses working in renewables over the summer recess and look forward to hearing about their plans for the future. I also have a jampacked tour of surgeries and door-to-door visits arranged and I hope to catch up with as many of you as possible. You can find details of surgeries on my website at www.drewhendrymp.scot.

Words by the Wayside “...reconciled to God by the death of His Son. (Romans 5:10)

Reader, you need to have your sins washed away and be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ and His atoning death. It is the only way of salvation. There is only one mediator between God and Men; the man Christ Jesus. No greater love can He show for you than by giving His life on Calvary’s Cross for you, that if you would repent of your sins and receive Christ as your only Saviour and then you will have peace with God.  Have you been reconciled with God through His Son?

THE DROUTHY COBBLER

September brings more top-class acts to the Drouthy Cobbler. On the 1st, Irie Yo-Yo, an 8 piece ska/reggae band from Edinburgh who mix in a bit of drum and bass, jazz, Latin and dub into their sound. Filled with plenty of infectious grooves, they’re bound to get feet tapping. Following this on the 2nd, Scotland based Lizabett Russo brings her blend of native music with elements of contemporary jazz, avant garde folk and world music, all backed up by her powerfully versatile voice. The music continues on the 7th with a gig from Jeffrey Lewis, supported by Mathias Kom & Ariel Sharratt from the band ‘The Burning Hell’. Lewis is one of the music world’s most revered indie artists, gaining praise from magazines such as ‘Rolling Stone’ and the ‘NME’, while also gaining the respect of his peers in the music industry, with a wide variety of acts citing their love for him, including Death Cab For Cutie, Interpol, Will Oldham and Jarvis Cocker who calls him “The best lyricist working in the US today.” Definitely not to be missed. Siobhan Wilson returns on the 9th. Born in Elgin, Siobhan spent time in Paris before returning to Scotland. Now living in Glasgow, she is making a name for herself with the like of the BBC’s Lauren Laverne and Vic Galloway heaping praise on her voice, melodies and instrumentation. Their music offerings end with the amazing James Brown Is Annie. An Edinburgh based jazz/funk band, they have shared a stage with some of the world’s finest bands including Average White Band, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Hayseed Dixie and The Blockheads. They have also gained high praise from publications, with The Scotsman calling them “a perfect example of how much fun funk can be” and the Daily Record saying they were "A contender for Scottish Album of the Year.” Fans of comedy have a lot to look forward to in September. As well as the monthly Comedy Club on the 27th, they also have two solo shows. Scottish comedian Gareth Mutch brings his debut Edinburgh Fringe show ‘Mutch Ado About Nothing’ to Elgin on the 8th. Full of tales of personal woe, failed relationships and living with his parents, Mutch proves that you don’t need a big political message to get big laughs. Finally, on the 17th, Canadian comedian Craig Campbell presents his ‘Easy Tiger’ show. Having performed in the UK on programmes such as Russell Howard’s Good News and Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow, as well as opening for Frankie Boyle on his 2010 and 2012 tours, he has been described as ‘one of the finest comics in the world’ and ‘a genuine genius’ by his fellow comedians. ‘Easy Tiger’ is about the intricacies and oddities of life in the UK as a Canadian, dissecting the stand-offish British psyche and regaling tales of passive aggressive hospitality.

Every year Electoral Registration Officers must issue households in their area with an enquiry form, to know who is eligible to vote at each property. Enquiry forms were issued to properties in your area on 1 August 2017. If you have yet to respond, reminder forms will be issued from Friday 1 September 2017.

You can respond by internet, telephone or SMS message – just follow the instructions sent with your form. This is the cheapest way for you to provide us with the information and saves taxpayers’ money. Alternatively, complete the paper form and return to us. Last year over £10,000 of taxpayers’ money was saved in postages due to responses made by the internet, telephone or SMS. Not already registered? If your name does not appear on your household enquiry form, you will then need to register to vote. The easiest way to register is online at

www.gov.uk/register-to-vote Not being on the electoral register can affect your credit rating.

Words by the Wayside “...but that the world through Him (the Lord Jesus Christ) might be saved.” (John 3:17)

Reader, Jesus Christ died for the sin of the world, but only Christians can say “Christ died for OUR sins”. Your sins are personal, your separation from God is personal, your repentance towards God through The Lord Jesus Christ must be personal. You need a personal living Saviour and God’s Son, Jesus Christ, is the only living Saviour and He is the only way. If you will not receive God’s Goodness and Salvation found in Christ alone, then you must have God’s severity for all eternity in rejecting Him.

Should I Put an Autumn Feed on the Grass ? Most folk doing just the basics to keep the grass in reasonable condition will generally think about putting on a feed in the spring,

This is only part of the control required however. Once the current growth has been killed off, it should be scarified out with a rake, or a scarifying machine, so the grass goes through the winter with a reduced amount of material on the surface, which is actually a favourable habitat for more moss to grow, if left uncleared,! Scarifying is a topic on it’s own which I might cover next month. September is the last month when you might hope to get seed to germinate in Scotland. You need a ground temperature of 10C, so if you want to do any end of season repairs, don’t delay.

and a feed in the autumn. They are quite different recipes though. A spring feed should mainly feature nitrogen to get it growing again after the winter, and put some colour into the leaf. The autumn feed should contain iron (ferrous sulphate) to control moss growth, and winter nutrients to help the roots through the winter. We use a soluble iron mix to make up a 5 gallon backpack sprayer, which makes for an even application. Many of you will have put down an autumn feed and seen the moss turn brown/black, pretty much overnight. This is caused by the iron in the mix, which dehydrates the top growth of moss, killing it off.

Lemon Verbena Panna Cotta (serves around 4) Panna cotta (Italian for "cooked cream") is an Italian dessert of sweetened cream thickened with gelatin and molded. The name panna cotta, although, is not mentioned in Italian cookbooks before the 1960s, yet it is often cited as a traditional dessert of the northern Italian region of Piedmont. One (undocumented) story says that it was invented by a Hungarian woman in the Langhe in the early 1900s. Whatever it’s history - it is really Yummy! Ingredients: 500ml double cream 10 leaves lemon verbena 150 ml full fat milk (blue top) 110g caster sugar 1/4 teaspoon vanilla 1 1/2 leaves of gelatine Method: Soak the gelatine leaves for about 10 minutes in cold water. This process is called blooming. In a large saucepan, bring the cream and lemon verbena to a rolling boil for 2 minutes, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and leave to infuse. In another pan, heat the milk and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Squeeze the excess water from the gelatine leaves then stir them into the milk mixture until dissolved. Add the milk and sugar mixture into the infused cream whisk carefully. Using a fine sieve, strain the mixture into a large pouring jug and fill dariole moulds which should be very lightly oiled to prevent sticking. Set in the fridge for at least 5 hours, serve with fresh berries and mint. We source our Lemon Verbena along with other edible flowers from Wendy & Kirsty who run "The Teeny Weeny Farm" in Dyke.
