Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Most people reading this article will be familiar with the famous photograph, Lunch atop a Skyscraper, taken in New York City in 1932 (look it up on Google Images if not!). It shows eleven men sitting on a girder eating, smoking and reading, during the building of the Rockefeller Centre, their legs dangling in fresh air some 800 feet above the streets below. They seem to be at complete ease, apparently oblivious to their terrifying location. Even though it was probably a posed picture, the reality was that this was indeed their working environment, and many people lost their lives in the construction of these gigantic skyscrapers. Sir Alex Ferguson kept a copy of this picture on the wall in his office and used it to inspire his players about the value of teamwork. Conveniently, there are eleven men sitting on the girder, the same number as there is in a football team. Manchester United players weren’t ever going to be in such potentially-fatal situations in the course of a mere football match, but Sir Alex wanted to instil in his players a sense of mutual dependence, success or failure hinging on every man watching out for one another, pulling his weight, and helping one another to do the job they are being paid to do. The recent World Cup finals in Russia
saw France triumph in the end and be declared world champions again. No team ever wins anything without a good work ethic and without a sense of interdependence. The strikers need to be scoring goals up front, while trusting the defenders to keep their opponents out at the back. At the same time they know that neither of them are likely to win the game based on their own skills alone if the goalkeeper behind them is carelessly allowing the ball to slip through his fingers into the net. That same strength of teamwork was wonderfully in evidence as the world held its breath and prayed for the successful rescue of another football team – the young lads and their coach trapped in a cave in Thailand with time, opportunity and oxygen fast running out. What skill and dedication was shown by the rescuers as they battled against the overwhelming odds to achieve the nearly-impossible escape. Sadly, the mission cost one man his life as he sacrificed his own safety for the sake of thirteen young strangers – a tragic loss for him and his family, yet not enough to prevent the rest of the rescue-team from seeing their mission through to the miraculous end. I’d love to think the same sense of mutual dependence and personal commitment is to be found in our

churches. On an ordinary day in present-day Scotland, it is unlikely that any of us will be asked to make the ultimate sacrifice. In other places, as many as two hundred countries throughout the world, persecution and death are commonplace for Christian believers. Every Sunday somebody dies in a church in Nigeria at the hands of militant terrorists, yet every week the faithful believers continue to meet there to worship Jesus, bonded together in a determination to live for him and to serve as part of his team on earth. The challenges we face here are minor in comparison, though we all know our present liberties cannot be taken for granted. May the Lord help us to keep the faith and to fight the good fight, as a Christian team should – loving and supporting one another, holding closely to our Manager’s every instruction, and following our Captain as he leads his heaven-bound team of millions and millions, (though there’s still room for more on this team!), to ultimate victory and to eternal glory.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times As Parliamentarians head back to Parliament after the summer recess I’d like to reflect on the summer. Many of us will have enjoyed time off with our friends and families in the past weeks. But this isn’t possible for everyone. Tourism is the biggest industry in the Highlands and its workers can generally forget getting time off in summer. Likewise, our valuable public services; NHS, Council, Emergency Services and others were working hard for us whilst many of us were relaxing. I’m also reminded that while many of us were able to enjoy time away from the routine, there are those for whom summer provides no respite from the grind of struggling to make ends. And I look forward to returning to Parliament to help them.
John Finnie MSP
Whatever our future holds, change is inevitable. There is no doubt our future would be better in the EU - staying in the single market - enjoying the freedom of movement that is so important for the Highlands. After all, look at how many young people from countries like Poland, Estonia and Latvia work in our hospitality industry. Then consider that Europe has been a good financial friend to the Highlands through investment in roads, bridges, piers, harbours, broadband, students, farmers, crofters and community facilities. But if Brexit is going ahead we can’t wait any longer for Westminster to come up with a sensible plan for rural funding. We need a transition period of five years to provide certainty and stability. My plan proposes to keep in the first two years, broadly the same income support payments to farmers, crofters and land managers as under CAP. Everyone, even the European Commissioner for Agriculture agrees that the Common Agriculture Policy is far too complicated. I want to start making the system simpler. We will remove financial penalties for minor errors in claims. But change needs to be well thought out and planned. Two years on from the EU vote, we still know very little from the UK Government about what will follow Brexit. Will people still as we wish be welcome to come to work here? Will there be tariffs? Will exporters be punished? What about flood of cheap imports? How will the provenance of Scottish produce be protected? Until we have all the answers it is impossible to finalise longer term strategy.

Summer recess is a great opportunity to get out and about to every corner of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey. This really is the best part about being an MP as I get to see first hand the fantastic work that is going on across our constituency. I greatly enjoyed catching up with folk at The Grantown Show and Nairn Highland Games – thanks as always goes to the dedicated volunteers that make events like these happen. In addition to my regular surgeries I also clocked up the miles on my summer surgery tour of our towns and villages. Getting out into our communities is by far the best way to find out not only what is happening but how I, as your MP can help. Details of my forthcoming surgeries can be found at drewhendrymp.scot

SpotLIGHT Garden
Brought to you by:
A Dry Summer this Year - at Last - and Now the Grass is Compacted ! The Beechgrove Garden and all the other gardening advice this last month will be about aerating the lawn now. At GreenThumb, this is what we’re doing too. Compacted ground prevents the take up of moisture, prevents air circulation and congests the root zone in the turf. All of these factors weaken the grass, it loses colour, growth slows right down and the lawn becomes prone to the invasion of MOSS and lichen over the Winter.
Aerator
For small lawns traditionally this has meant forking the ground, but for a larger lawn this is not really feasible. What we do, and the golf courses do this too, is run over the grass with a hollow-core tining machine (you can see from the picture this is a heavy piece of kit). It pulls thousands of cores out the ground in no time, and instantly eases the compaction. It’s probably the best thing we can do for our customers, as no-one has an aerator in their shed! However you tackle this, it is a key part of the battle in our climate to control MOSS. Oh - and remember to keep leaves off the grass through the autumn.
For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area.
