autumn. They are quite different recipes though. A spring feed should feature nitrogen to get it growing and put some colour into the leaf, the autumn feed should contain iron (ferrous sulphate) to control moss growth, and winter nutrients to help the roots through the winter. We use a soluble powder mix to make up a 5 gallon backpack sprayer, which makes for an even application. Many of you will have put down an autumn feed and seen the moss turn brown/black, pretty much overnight. This is caused by the iron in the mix, which dehydrates the top growth of moss, killing it off. It’s only part of the control required however. Once the current growth has been killed off, it should be scarified out with a rake, or a scarifying machine, so the grass goes through the winter with a reduced amount of material on the surface, which is actually a favourable habitat for more moss to grow! Scarifying is a topic on it’s own which

The Editor

As we go to press, the news reports are full of stories of displaced people across the globe who appear to be desperate to improve their situation. It appears to be a genuine humanitarian issue with some troubling ramifications if we are unable to respond in a coordinated fashion. Let us hope that ‘the powers that be’ can organise sufficient aid to avoid any loss of life and offer some comfort to those people who have lost or been forced to abandon their homes.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS be “light for the whole world” Not so very far from where my roots are in Galloway, there is a cave on the seashore. It is not very big and it does not go very far back, but around the entrance there are a number of crosses carved into the rock, some of them very old. Pilgrims still come there and some make and leave their own crosses made from driftwood and things they find on the shore. Some find it a sacred place still because of the cave’s connection with St. Ninian, one of those pioneering celtic saints who first brought Christianity to this country. This month of September the church remembers and celebrates the courage, faithfulness and compassion of St. Ninian, whose feast day is September 16th. Ninian was born around the year 360 and from an early age expressed a desire to live like Jesus, teaching his message and

caring for people. As a young man he travelled widely in Italy and France, studying and learning more of the gospel. A biographer of the time describes Ninian as a “bright star” someone whose life shone with the light of God’s love “like a city set on a hill”. Matt 5:14 Ninian set up a community of monks on the Solway coast at Whithorn, close to where that cave on the beach is. His church was built of stone which was unusual at the time and it shone in the sunlight, so that even the building reflected the light of the gospel that he and his followers believed in and he lived his life following his deepest desire to teach the things of Jesus and to care for people. He paved the way for others who came after and spread the message wider and from across the ages. His example is still an encouragement and an inspiration. We have all heard friends talk

about those who light up a room with their presence, encountered people who always seem to be able to bring a sense of light and hope to any situation just by being there. Ninian was clearly one of those kinds of folk. In Matthew’s Gospel Jesus calls us to be “light for the whole world” (Matt 5:13) because if “our light shines before people” (Matt 5:16) then they will see God’s light and God’s love alive in the world. Ninian before us, was a “bright star” in this world not because he was famous or had any great fortune, but because he cared for people and brought a little love wherever he went.

DINA LEIGH

‘PATTERNS OF CHANGE’ 29th Aug - 21st Sept 6pm - 8pm

www.dinaleigh0.wix.com/ dinaleigh50

SANDRA RILEY

‘SENCE OF PLACE’ 26th Sept - 6th Oct 6pm - 8pm www.sandrariley.co.uk

In this exhibition ‘Patterns of Change’ it becomes evident that Dina Leigh is in search of something deeply elemental, different and very much her own. Her paintings are exquisite but seemingly chaotic, vibrant and full of roaring humanity. An exploration in the flux of change, crossroads experience, growth and death are underpinned with Goethe’s phenomenology and poetry by Emily Dickinson, T. S. Eliot and Paul Celan. Findhorn based Dina Leigh graduated BA (Hons) and MA Fine Art at the Norwich University of the Arts. This retrospective exhibition will be displaying a selection of her work produced over a decade from 2003-2013. Large-scale mixed media pieces printed on to canvas and often painted into using acrylic paints. Sandra uses her own photographs as a starting point and basis for her work. Light, colour and atmosphere are themes that fascinate her the most. Different places and situations have their own unique energy and atmosphere in time and place.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES

“ Parliament Blog 2015 is the Year of Food and Drink. Over the summer why not visit the local farmers shows and highland games and game fairs to enjoy the best of Scotland's natural larder, and a glass of something stimulating. The quality of offerings in our restaurants cafes and eateries has I believe been increasing over recent years. Next year is badged the year of Innovation Architecture and Design and 2017 the year of History Heritage and Archeology - with 2018 the year of Young People. Each year aims to highlight different parts of Scotland's many attractions to visitors. If you have suggestions for future themed years beyond 2018 - please let me or Visitscotland know.

It’s been a frenetic start to working as the MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey, with lots of work done on fighting unfair delivery charges, seeking better mobile phone coverage options and dealing with literally hundreds of cases from constituents. Life as an MP is exactly how I expected it to be - incredibly busy and humbling. As much as I relish being in London working on people’s behalf, I just love being home in the constituency. During recess I’m taking every opportunity to get out to events across the area and following up on one of my key commitments during the election, to be accessible. To that end I’m glad to announce we now have a new website www.drewhendrymp.scot which can be visited for news of my activities, information or even to contact me directly. We will also be publishing an early ‘report card’ to outline what I’ve been doing on your behalf since being elected.
