The Editor Ho ho ho - here we go again - it only seems five minutes since Christmas last year and the “time of peace and joy” is upon us again. At this time it is always good to think of others less fortunate than ourselves and an invitation to join a family for a Christmas meal from a neighbour can be just the thing to cheer up a person living on their own. When was the last time that we did this I wonder do you have a spare place at your table? It’s Party time! The excitement is mounting, will it be `Misha B’ , Janet Devlin or `The Risk’? And who can trip the best fandango, will it be Harry Judd, Holly Valance, Jason Donovan? The headlines are screaming the `news.’ ` The ratings had better be up or I’m going to sack the lot of them’, S. Cowell. Turn on the radio, a voice, not quite managing dulcet, more gravelly, belts out `Does he ride a red nosed reindeer? Does a 'ton up' on his sleigh. Re-tune only to find `feed the world, don’t they know……’ . `But who will be the number 1 this year’ asks the breathless presenter after almost every song? Facebook and MSN is jamming with Who you gonna vote for?’. There’s no escape, something special must be happening! Yes. It’s the finals of The X Factor AND Strictly Come Dancing The nation, or at least a fair chunk of it, sits transfixed their TV’s, IPods, Smartphones, and Digi Radios. This can only mean one thing. It’s Christmas Time! Wait a minute. Press the pause button. There must be more than this. Isn’t there a different kind of question that somehow, like those in the TV series that’s carries the name, has become `LOST’? A question that isn’t so trivial as to wonder why DJ’s insist on replaying Noddy Holder of the seventies sideboards and Slade’s `Merry Christmas Everybody’, EVERY

year. (Why, I don’t know. Is it really that good?). Of course, all these things are fun and entertaining, maybe not so much for the contestants by the look on their faces as the weeks go by, and this is all part of what makes up a contemporary Christmas scene. But, this doesn’t mean even for a moment that this entertainment is WHAT or WHO Christmas is really about. There lies the important question. Tear away, all the glamour, all the jingle jangle, all the dollar and pound chasing banality of the once a year seasonal TV and advertising hype. If you can strip it all away, maybe you can glimpse the `more than this’, the questions that seem for so many to have become lost in the media and shopping frenzy. Let me help. Who- from Luke’s Gospel chapter 2 verses 711. She gave birth to her first child a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the village inn. That night some shepherds were in the fields outside the village, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terribly frightened, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news of great joy for everyone! 11 The Saviour – yes, the Messiah, the Lord – has been born

tonight in Bethlehem, the city of David Why From John’s Gospel 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. The bible message tells us there is nothing to fear in seeking to peer through all the distractions that make up what we now call the Christmas season to fix your eyes on the real message of Christmas. The message isn’t hidden, the meaning isn’t lost, and neither does anyone need remain that way. Unlike the TV shows X Factor and Strictly which exclude as they progress, the original X (Cross) Factor is a Christmas gift available to `everyone’. In the account above, `she’ was Mary, the `first child’, is the boy Jesus, the Son of Mary & the Son of God. During the approximately three years, of his ministry as an adult that we know about Jesus cared for, healed, taught, and included. Everyone, whoever, whosoever, anyone. No-one is excluded from the message of hope and the great gift that Christmas represents. It’s party time. You can join the real Christmas Party and get the genuine Christmas gift. Just ask. CC Committee Reports:No. 20 Local Bus:- C. Cllr. mackie gave a resume of the situation with the local No. 20 service which ceased running through tradespark at beginning of August, without any prior notification from stagecoach or highland Council. this has come as a result of the “Planning gain” monies which sainsbury’s were required to put up to “improve the local Bus service”. tradespark/Cranloch lost out. their argument will be that tradespark is serviced by the Nos. 10; 11; 11A; 305 buses, which is all very well if you want to go to sainsbury’s but useless if you want to go the Doctor surgery/Nairn hospital. many residents in our area have mobility issues and/or are elderly with health problems and have no cars. many have had to resort to taxi’s to get to and from the Doctor’s, but as this is very expensive, will not be sustainable. N.S.C.C. raised this issue about public transport when the planning to move the doctor surgery’s to Nairn hospital was being discussed. We were assured then by Nhs highland and highland Council, through our local Councillors, but then the cuts came and now these bodies

page 8 December 2011

have buried their heads in the sand, and we have been left in the lurch. Nothing new in that!!!! N.S.C.C. wrote to stagecoach, and in fairness they did reply, “highland Council were consulted, it’s their fault.” (here we go again) We then wrote to mr. gillies, head of teC services who have a responsibility for transport issues, but to date we have had no reply. still it has only been 4 weeks so i suppose its early days. the purpose of raising this issue at our meeting (27/9/2011) is to ask people who are experiencing difficulty, either getting onto these service buses; or problems getting to or from Nairn hospital/Doctor surgery’s to get in touch in writing if possible; so we can build up a dossier of problems to take back to stagecoach/highland Council to try and improve the situation. People have been blaming sainsbury’s, but in fairness they only complied with the Planning gain requirement. the problem has been caused by how this “Planning gain” money has been used, and it certainly hasn’t been used for the betterment of tradespark/Cranloch residents. We would encourage everyone who has a problem to either contact one of their C. Cllrs., or write to us outlining the

tel: 01309 690063

problems they have experienced, and we will hopefully get sufficient material to strengthen our argument when we meet with stagecoach / the highland Council A query was raised from the floor regarding the increase in fares, prior to this change the local bus fare to the high street x return was £1.65; now it is £2.40 which seems a huge increase. maybe mr. souter needs a bigger bonus next year, £800,000.00 maybe wasn’t enough? Community Council Elections:- the elections are to take place on 16th. November 2011, so anyone wishing to stand for Nairn suburban C.C. needs to complete a nomination form and hand it into mrs. l. Clark before 4pm on tuesday 4th. october. We are hoping to have more than the 10 C.C. members so that a postal ballot will be held, it makes those elected feel part of the process. C.C.’s are not just about “Planning”, but we are the voice of local people when it comes to issues such as loss of our local bus etc. so anyone who lives in the area and wants to help make it a better place to live, please come along and join us.

Elgin Youth Cafe Elgin Youth Cafe celebrated their 10th birthday this year. It provides a safe place for young people between the ages of 12-18 to come and socialise, away from the pressures of modern day living. Activities and projects are provided to encourage young people to be part of their local community, and to build bridges between young and old. They offer the following facilities and activities in the Cafe: Cafe; Computer Suite; Pool Table; Table Tennis; Table Football; Wii; Playstation; X Box; Karaoke; Lounge Area; Games; MTV & Sky; Live Bands and Discos; Theme Nights; Programme of Activities for School Holidays; Fully Functional Bar (Soft Drinks) & Kitchen. There are various activities which young people can join in with at the Cafe: Delta Force – a community based initiative, which encourages young people to carry out projects in their local area. Some examples of this are – graffiti clean ups; bag packing; street clean ups; coffee mornings; garden projects; fund raising events. 1:1 and group work with young people

There is so much going on at the cafe, so please come along and have a great time there. Volunteers are absolutely essential for the Youth Cafe to open in the evenings, and to this end, Elgin Youth Development Group were successful in gaining funding from Voluntary Action Group for a volunteer co-ordinator in July this year. Moira Morrison has now been in post around four months and is recruiting volunteers to work with 6 different groups within the cluster group – Elgin Youth Cafe, Lossie Youth Cafe, The Loft - Keith, Quarriers Young Carers, Step by Step and Enable Scotland. Her goal is to get 40 volunteers during the year to work with the organisations within the cluster group. People have many reasons for volunteering - Gain new skills, personal development and builds confidence to name but a few. We provide training to help volunteers gain new skills and experiences, and this in turn may help them gain new employment. Although it is good to have qualifications, volunteers also need ‘people’ skills such as listening, empathy, communication and team working. Finally, common sense and a good sense of humour are essential.

Regular fundraising events to raise money for the Cafe Outdoor education activities, including canoeing and climbing Arts and crafts activities and events Courses, events and projects during the school holidays, including film making and life skills. 14

recipe

Chef’s Confidential The festive season is here and whilst Turkey is the traditional choice, the following recipe is a lovely alternative, using ingredients that are readily available and won't break the budget either. Have a wonderful Christmas and Good New Year.

Spiced Sea Trout En Croute Serves 4 people 750 grm Filleted and skinned Sea Trout (Salmon works well also) 380grm Ready made Puff Pastry 3 Balls of Stem Ginger 3 tablespoons Mixed Dried Fruit 1 Star Anise 100grm Soft butter 1 Egg beaten Salt and pepper to taste Method 1.Divide the puff pastry into four and roll out each piece into a 12 cm square. Put in the fridge to chill. 2.Cut the stem ginger balls in to thin shreds. Place the dried fruit along with the star anise into a bowl and cover with boiling water to plump up the fruit, and allow the star anise to add flavour to the fruit. Set aside for 20 minutes. 3.Using a spoon mix the soft butter to a smooth paste and add salt and pepper. Drain the dried fruit and remove the star anise. Add this with the ginger to the butter and mix thoroughly. 4.Take the piece of sea trout or salmon and divide in to four. Spoon ¼ of the butter mixture on to each portion of Salmon. 5.Remove the chilled pastry squares from the fridge and place a piece of salmon butter side down on to the pastry square. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and fold the edges in to make a parcel. Turnover and place the folded side on to a non stick or greased baking tray. Repeat with the other three pieces of salmon. 6.Brush the parcels with the beaten egg mixture and using a sharp knife, lightly score a criss-cross pattern on the parcels. 7.Place in the oven preheated to 190°C for 20 – 30minutes until golden. 8.Serve with Green Vegetables and either a Lemon Butter Sauce or Hollandaise Sauce.

Winter vehicle safety and maintenance

The last two winters have seen widespread snow and ice for weeks on end with temperatures regularly falling below -10C. You're more likely to break down in a bad winter. There's more risk of delays too but not necessarily in the way you'd expect. If vehicles ahead lose control - a jack-knifed lorry for example - you won't be able to get through no matter how well equipped your car is with winter tyres or chains. You could face a wait of several hours until the blockage and other traffic ahead has been cleared. Here's what you need to do this winter to reduce the risk of a breakdown and make sure that you are equipped to deal with the conditions.

Check your car Antifreeze – check coolant level regularly and, if required, top-up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection. Battery - the most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold - get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure. Fuel - keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay. Lights - check and clean all lights regularly to make sure you can see and be seen clearly. Carry spare bulbs. Tyres - should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety. Check pressures at least every fortnight. Windscreen - reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew worn wiper blades. Screen wash - use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather. Locks and door seals - stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals. A squirt of water dispersant (WD-40) in locks will help stop them freezing.

You and your passengers Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. As well as the things you should be carrying on every journey regardless of the weather, you should make up a winter emergency kit to keep in the boot – hopefully you won’t need it but you will be very glad it's there if you do. Year-round essentials Fully-charged mobile phone and in-car charger Sunglasses – to deal with glare from the sun or snow. Personal medication Warning triangle Spare bulbs First aid kit Road atlas – in case of diversions Sat-nav or printed route for unfamiliar journeys Breakdown membership card

Winter emergency kit Blanket, rug or sleeping bag Shovel Bits of carpet or thick cardboard to place under driven wheels to help regain traction on ice or snow Salt, sand or cat litter – to help clear snow and ice Reflective jacket(s) Ice scraper and de-icer Torch and batteries Tow rope Snow chains (if you live in a remote or rural area) Battery jump leads Bottled water Snacks – chocolate or cereal bars Extra screen wash For further information on vehicle winter care, safety and maintenance please call Martin at McAndie Garage, Shore Street, Lossiemouth on:

Dreaming of... ...a Caribbean break

The Caribbean as we know it is made up of thousands of little islands in a relatively naturally protected gulf to the east of Central America, and relatively close to the Equator. The main well known islands include Barbados, The Grenadines, Antigua, St Kitts and Nevis, The British Virgin Islands, St Lucia, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Anguilla, St Barths, The Bahamas and The Turks and Caicos Islands. However as we have learned in recent years there are times of year when the local tropical storms and hurricanes can cause chaos. The hotels in Barbados are of a very high standard such as Sandy Lane, Coral Reef Club, Sandpiper and Cobbler's Cove. The west coast of Barbados is called the Platinum coast which hosts the best hotels, restaurants and Championship Golf courses. Antigua is another wonderful island, ideal for couples and families, with an abundance of lovely beaches. Very good for watersports, the island is also an unspoiled paradise for lush palm groves, tropical flowers and exotic birds. Golfers will love the Cedar Valley and Jolly Harbour Championship courses, while for divers and snorkellers coral canyons, wall drops, wrecks and sea caves abound, as do turtles, dolphins, barracudas and reef fish. Grenada, otherwise known as the Spice Island, is one of the most beautiful of the Caribbean Islands – your senses succumb to a variety of different delicious aromas, panoramic scenery and a warm feeling exuded by the Grenadians. Jamaica, ideal for couples and families, has a very rich cultural heritage and varying landscapes from flat beaches to the Blue Mountains, enabling good holidays combining beach and mountain resorts with Championship Golf courses. Temperatures beside the sea can reach 30-32 degrees maximum, and in May and September rainfall can reach 6 inches in the month, but the climate is fairly even through the year. Due to changing climate conditions the hurricane season can occur between June and November, although it doesn't always happen and not for that long either. The Turks and Caicos Islands are ruggedly beautiful and little has changed since Columbus first set foot on their shores back in 1492. White powder beaches give way to world-class diving, whale watching and horse riding across the 8 islands and 30 cays surrounded by wonderful Coral reefs. St Barths and St Martin, both French islands, are full of immaculate yachts, designer boutiques, superb restaurants and charismatic people, The Bahamas is a collection of over 700 blissfully unspoilt islands, and the British Virgin Islands comprise over 100 islands and cays characterised by infectious laid back sensibility and some of the world's best sailing grounds. St Kitts and Nevis have a wonderful blend of lush rainforest, exotic wildlife and old world charm, the Cayman Islands boast gourmet restaurants, exotic wildlife and endless white sandy beaches, and Anguilla has a string of prestigious resorts, villas and restaurants while still retaining its laid back West Indian character. In short – the Caribbean would suit most of us.

ART SEVENTH HEAVEN FOR GALLERY TRAIL Scotland’s Gallery Trail, now in its seventh year welcomes a new partner and a new gallery to Grampian - the Airt Gallery based outside Kintore, named after the traditional Scots word, meaning segment of the heavens or direction of the wind. The Airt specialises in Scottish Landscape art. Celebrating the best the Scottish Highlands and Islands has to offer in painting, printmaking and photography; proprietor Jeannie Robinson hosts a regularly changing exhibition of both contemporary landscapes and seascapes. This Grampian Trail is aimed at art lovers who visit, or live in the area, who want to see what this part of the art world has to offer, and take in the spectacular scenery along the route.

Also new to the 2011-2012 trail is Country Frames Gallery of Insch, a warm welcoming gallery set in the heart of the beautiful Aberdeenshire countryside. Yvonne Flett offers a wide range of art and crafts from local, national and international exhibiting artists. A comprehensive picture framing and giclee printing service is also provided. Scotland's Gallery Trail is entirely self-funded by the partners themselves and this year Moray Chamber of Commerce has taken on the role of operating partner, ensuring leaflets are distributed and the www site updated. Rachael Annand, recently graduated from Robert Gordon University in International Tourism Management is the project co-ordinator. Speaking from the Speyside based chamber she said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed collating all the information from the partners and hope to help them raise their profile nationally and internationally with our new marketing strategy. These are unique galleries in the most beautiful countryside in the world and we hope our information entices visitors to plan their way around the trail.” Leaflets will be distributed throughout the region and Moray Chamber’s international partnership with the medieval city of Zwolle in the Netherlands allows the leaflet to be distributed there too. This year sees the chamber also operate Scotland’s Food Trail – Grampian, which will be re-launched shortly. On the food trail you will find hotels and country houses, cafes, visitor attractions and retail outlets as well as internationally renowned food and drink producers-all with a commitment to quality and excellence.

December

As our summer migrants, such as swallow and osprey leave for warmer climates and the red deer rut winds down with the animals returning to the winter feeding grounds, the next great spectacle for the wildlife enthusiast is the winter migrations. Hundreds of thousands of birds that have Fieldfare spent the summer in the northern latitudes return to the (relatively) mild shores of Britain. Amongst the first to arrive are fieldfares and redwing, both members of the thrush family. Both species will often flock together and large flocks can often be seen feeding in open fields. Listen for the sound of fieldfares, a noisy crackling sound, often heard overhead at dusk. Look out for both species stripping rowan trees bare of their berries! Last winter saw an eruption of one of our prettiest winter visitors, the waxwing. These eruptions happen in years when the population, usually concentrated in northern Europe is too large for the available food. Visiting numbers can vary greatly, from below 100 birds to around 15,00 in the eruption years. A sociable and gregarious bird, waxwings are easily identified with their prominent crest, black “mask and colourful wings. They are also relatively tame and it is often possible to get within a few metres of them. A bird that I look forward to seeing each year is the Goldeneye goldeneye duck and we have small populations on Loch Lochy and loch Garry each winter. As the name suggests, they have a bright yellow eye and the males are easily identified by the white patch just below the eye which looks like a large tear-drop. The males head is dark green and body black and white whilst the female has a brown head with mottled grey body. They are diving ducks, feeding on insect larvae, small fish and pond weeds. Possibly the most spectacular of the winter arrivals are the pink footed goose, which arrive from their summer feeding grounds, often as far afield as Greenland and Iceland, in huge numbers. Around 150,000 birds are estimated to overwinter in the UK. To see this winter spectacle locally, the RSPB have excellent reserves at Udale and Nigg bays, where numbers peak at around 10,00 birds during the migrations too and from their breeding grounds. Further details can be found on www.rsp.org.uk.

Putting the

back into Christmas emember when you were five, the bubbling excitement you felt standing in front of the tree on Christmas Day? When you didn’t know which present to open first and just wanted to race around opening everything at once? Well, the winter wonderland display at Simpsons Garden Centre brought back the thrill of those Christmases (long) past. I guarantee an “oooh” or “wow” will escape from everyone that walks through the display.

each look are behind each room. And there are thousands. The furniture, cushions, throws and other accessories are also all for sale – which makes it even easier to recreate the look. And all at reasonable prices.

Even the grumpiest Scrooge would find it hard not to be impressed!

The Christmas light display is stunning and one of those new LED lights is coming home with me to add some sparkle. A friendly staff member (in elf green) explains LED lights are more environmentally friendly because they use less electricity, and if a bulb fails on these lights the rest will still work!

At the heart of it all, four inspiring room settings have been created beneath a dark canopy with 4,000 twinkling lights. Who could resist the urge to cuddle up under that starry night sky, on the sofa beside the crackling wood stove in the Highland Home, with pheasants and red squirrels peeking between the tartan hearts on the tree? I definitely want a wee flock of those fluffy, white woolly footstools. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to sit down to dinner with the sheer elegance of the Classic Christmas dining table decked in ivory and gold? Ice blue and arctic white create a completely different mood in the Contemporary Cool theme. And the red and white Scandinavian folk influence reveals why Home is where the Heart is. All the decorations used to achieve

The hypnotic fibre optic tree display is stunning, but I want something a bit more traditional. In the forest of artificial trees, a large deer invites you to rub its nose. Real trees are in stock now, but these look real enough. In fact, I nearly jumped the height of one of the fake firs, when I realised something furry was moving underneath it! Another deer – this time “breathing”. Time for a cup of tea I think and a mince pie… The All you Can Eat Festive Carvery every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evening until December 23 definitely gives food for thought! And with its programme of seasonal events, Simpsons is putting the magic back into Christmas

King Eider

When the weather is damp and driech, the days are short and summer seems such a long time ago, it is nice to get a splash of colour and a touch of the exotic. Waxwings arrive on our shores, or to be more accurate, in our gardens and supermarket car parks on a sporadic basis. When the berry crop has failed in their normal habitats in Fennoscandia and northern Russia they are forced to migrate south to the UK and central Europe where they can enjoy our relatively mild climate and plentiful food supplies in the shape of cotoneaster and rowan berries. These striking little birds with their pinkish brown plumage, long crests and highwayman black masks can be very approachable making themselves known as something out of the ordinary even to non-birdwatchers. Take a Waxwing

The second visitor that frequents our coastline in most winters, especially in the Burghead and Roseisle area, is the stunning King Eider. Now this is no ordinary Eider, this bird has travelled down from the high arctic to spend the winter feeding in the shallow waters around the Moray coast. Not as easy to see as the above Waxwings, it is still well worth the trouble of scanning through the flocks of Common Eider. Check carefully and soon you will pick up the adult males massive orange bill shield, rose coloured bill and beautiful pale blue head. Slightly smaller than its common cousins it to can be quite approachable and can give excellent views even without a telescope. At the onset of spring these little beauties will once again head north to their breeding grounds leaving our streets and coastline a little duller without their presence.

closer look at the folded wings and you will notice the bright red feather tips looking exactly like drops of red sealing wax, hence the name Waxwing.

Next month, back to basics! Looking at Garden birds. So until next time, good birding!

When the party is over... We see in the Bible that we are all unclean in God’s sight because of our sins. You may not think that you are a hell-deserving sinner, but God is Holy and He hates sin. Sin will keep you from being with God in heaven for eternity and damn you to Hell, unless you receive God’s forgiveness for sin which is found only in His Son Jesus Christ. God’s word reveals that if you die in an unclean & unforgiven state, because of your own choice, you’ll go to hell with all the other people who refused God’s mercy. There are many people, and you may be one of them, who believe that life should be one never ending party; friends to meet, places to go, and things to get and do, seeking constant amusement in the pursuit of happiness, needing non-stop activity to fill the emptiness inside, to fight the boredom that surrounds them.

You may think. “That’s okay - all my party friends will be there too!” Yes, sadly they will be there too if they too reject Christ, but the thick blackness of “outer darkness” will separate you from each other. It is a place of torment, never ending fear and punishment and you’ll be there on your own.

Right now you are without God in this world and have no hope, but in Christ Jesus you, who are far off, can be brought near by the blood of Christ; He Drugs, alcohol, immoral relationships, money can be your peace.
