Here at SpotLight, we are constantly looking at providing both useful and interesting information for our readers and following a number of suggestions we are, this month, introducing a regular new book feature - The Monthly Book Club. For the feature we have tried to pick a good cross section of book types which are mostly new releases (we are fortunate to have an ex librarian on our staff to help us with the selections!). Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings The Darkest Hour…The Finest Hour Billy Graham said: ‘the greatest need in our world today is the need for hope.’ He preached a message of hope in person to more than 100 million people and to millions more via television, satellite and film. His message of hope was sourced in the bible and he would introduce his point with ‘the bible says…’ His message resonated with those who had turned away from God and he warned them that those who forget God have no hope (Job 8:13). The word hope is often used with uncertainty about the future. ‘I hope it won’t rain tomorrow.’ Yet wishful thinking cannot overcome the harsh realities of life: when we are feeling alone, when we experience pain and suffering, when life seems out of control, when we are crippled by personal failure or when we are wounded by the actions of others. Christian hope or biblical hope is a confident expectation about the future because of God’s faithfulness to the world he created. When we go through heartache and grief we need to remember that God cares for us, God loves us and he came into our world to share in our suffering and to bring liberation from it (Romans 8:18-25). Therefore, Christian hope is like an anchor that gives us stability in the storm. Christian hope is a confident expectation that we will safely reach the shore because we trust in the lighthouse to guide us in the darkness. Christian hope is certain that the world is full of darkness, evil and pain but equally certain about the trustworthiness of Jesus, The Light
of the World. ‘In him was life, and that light was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.’ (John 1:4-5) As we approach Easter one of the most popular films in the cinema is the Bafta award winning, The Darkest Hour. It is the story of how Britain faced the overwhelming darkness of Nazi Germany. When most of our leaders were tempted to give up and give in to the forces of darkness, one man, Winston Churchill, chose wisely and bravely to resist and lead the nation to overcome the darkness. Light and darkness are contrasted in many of the scenes to give the message that hope is alive even when the odds seem overwhelming. Decisions matter in life, and Churchill’s decision not to give up is inspirational and worthy of remembrance. At Easter we remember the decision Jesus Christ made to enter our world and to do battle with the forces of darkness. Under severe pressure to take an easier path Jesus chose the cross. As he prayed in Gethsemane, it became clear to Jesus that the only way sinful humanity could be reconciled to God was for a perfect man, the Son of God to die for the sins of the world. Anticipating the full horror of the cross, he prayed to Father God: ‘not my will, but yours be done’. He died for you. He died for me. The death of the innocent in place of the guilty was the darkest hour in human history. At 3pm in the afternoon Jesus cried out in the

darkness as he bore the full weight of judgement for our sin. This was the darkest hour but it was also the finest hour because God’s love was demonstrated to his world and God’s rescue plan was accomplished. ‘God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.’ (John 3:16) This confident expectation is based on faith in the historical fact of Christ’s death and resurrection. On the third day, Jesus rose again. There is nothing harder to overcome than death itself. The one who conquered death is the one who gives us hope for this life and the next. What kind of hope do you have for your darkest hours? Billy Graham was not afraid of death. He said, ‘I look forward to death, with great anticipation. I am looking forward to seeing God face to face.’ The Christian can say even on the darkest and most painful of days: ‘I know that my redeemer lives…and I will see God.’ (Job 19:25) Because Christ lives, his darkest hour can become for us the finest hour. Come to Christ this Easter and receive the gift of eternal life – which begins right now as you open your heart to him. Pastor Alasdair Macleod Culduthel Christian Centre Inverness

Parliament Blog & Tide Times As the MP for Moray, defence issues are always high up my agenda given we are home to both Kinloss Barracks and RAF Lossiemouth. Both bases play an important role in Moray life and the local economy. I also know the welcome our service men and women and their families receive here is greatly appreciated by all. While the wintry weather resulted in the postponement of the Secretary of State for Defence cutting the first sod in the groundwork’s for the arrival of the new P8 Poseidon aircraft, these works continue. This represents significant investment by the UK Government and Boeing. RAF Lossiemouth is a major strategic base for our military and the investment we will see both on the camp and in the local area over the next few years will no doubt benefit local businesses and our communities. Douglas Ross MP
This year marks 100 years since some women got the vote. Nicola Sturgeon (our female first Minister who appointed a gender balanced cabinet) led a debate in Holyrood to mark the occasion. A lot has changed in 100 years, and for that I am truly thankful. But while we have made some bold changes already, let’s not be complacent, or take progress for granted. With that in mind, I am glad to see the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #PressforProgress. We need concerted, deliberate action if we are going to achieve gender equality. Research shows that gender parity is over 200 years away. Women should not have to wait this long for equality, we deserve it now.

Many of us will have watched Blue Planet and seen the devastating impact of plastic in our seas. With straws, carrier bags and other plastic waste ending up in the ocean, suffocating wildlife and polluting our beautiful coastline. Undoubtedly, plastic straws are contributing to the increase in plastic litter in our seas, and so much of the litter we find on our beaches is plastic based, as I’ve seen first-hand when I’ve joined the Spey Bay Dolphin Centre on some of their beach cleans. That litter on our shores and in our seas is a result of our behaviour, with all the single use plastic we throw away every day. It’s abundantly clear the damage that plastics are causing to our planet and it is vital that we do everything we can to reduce the volume of plastic that we use and discard. So I am hugely supportive of the campaign to ban single use plastic straws and am pleased that the Scottish Government has committed to a ban in Scotland.

Words by the Wayside “Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches…” (Psalm 52:7)
Reader, is this you? What good is anything, if you know not the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour? All for you is vanity and vexation of spirit. What if you gain the whole world and yet lose your own soul? While you are living in pleasure you are dead in trespasses and in sins, without God and without hope in this world, and yet Jesus Christ died for you. Eternity where?

clean-up the grass. The price is probably similar too.
The main task of the off-season is scarifying out moss and thatch, and it is best done either at the end of a season (autumn) or just before a new season starts (spring). Some enthusiasts do it twice ! The general advice is don’t scarify once the grass has started growing. New grass in the spring will be damaged by the rather traumatic and invasive scarification process.

pril tends to be the month when everything in the garden starts to wake up, and on the first of the sunny days my phone starts to ring off the hook and it’ll be November before I know it! I love it though, this time of year, especially so as I’ve been doing lots of work in my own garden that will start to show itself soon enough – plants and trees that have gone in ‘bare root’ will suddenly burst into life, belying their straggly appearance when they arrived in cardboard boxes a couple of months ago! I’ll be looking to spend some time in the garden before the spring growth spurt kicks in (usually some time in May, and it lasts about 6-8 weeks). During the spring growth spurt, you have to work hard to stand still sometimes, so a bit of extra effort now will pay dividends.
Do gently hoe over your borders to disrupt any emerging weeds under the soil. Do dig well-rotted horse or cow manure into your beds. Do cut your lawn if it needs it, but just a light cut for the first one. Do prune Forsythia sp. once it has finished flowering. Do scarify your lawn with a spring-tine rake for smaller areas, or hire a machine for larger areas. Do add a lawn feed to your grass. Do treat decks and hard surfaces for moss.
26
Don’t apply lawn mosskiller by hand, however careful you are it will create ugly black streaks that take ages to recover. Use a spreader. Don’t go overboard with your lawn feed if you have large areas of grass and no time to cut it. I only ever use an autumn feed on my lawn which has a bit less nitrogen in. Don’t forget to top-dress plant pots – skim a bit of old compost away, and add some new compost. Don’t forget to start spraying roses to help keep pests away. You can get organic sprays that use things like garlic. Once the overnight temperatures are over 6C, the grass will start growing in earnest, so be sure your mower is working nicely. Mow at least once a fortnight to prevent weeds setting seed. If you do scarify, as advised above, don’t mow it for a few days afterwards as it is a stressful process for the grass.
I’LL BE ADDING SOME MORE BLOG ARTICLES OVER THE COMING WEEKS ABOUT HOW TO DO VARIOUS JOBS IN THE GARDEN, SO KEEP AN EYE ON MY WEBSITE AT WWW.THEMOUNTAINGARDENER.CO.UK. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, OR IDEAS FOR USEFUL THINGS YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ ABOUT HERE, OR ON MY BLOG, THEN JUST DROP ME A LINE.

Simnel Cake This spiced fruit cake has a layer of marzipan and another one on top. Originally the cake was baked by girls in service to take home with them on Mothering Sunday. It is now more traditional to have Simnel Cake at Easter time.
Ingredients: 100g glace cherries 500g mixed dried fruit 175g soft butter (unsalted) 175g caster sugar zest of 1 lemon 225g plain flour 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground ginger 25g ground almonds 3 eggs 2 tablespoons milk 1 kg yellow marzipan Icing sugar (for rolling marzipan) 1 tablespoon apricot jam (melted) 1 egg white
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 170°C. Grease and line both the bottom and sides of a 20cm cake tin with a double layer of brown baking paper.
2. Chop the cherries finely and mix them with the rest of the dried fruit. Cream the butter and sugar until pale and soft (using an electric mixer is easiest), add the lemon zest.
3. Combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger and ground almonds together into a bowl. Add 1 of the eggs to the creamed butter mixture along with 2 tablespoons of the flour mixture, then beat in the remaining eggs in the same way. Beat in the rest of the dry ingredients, and then the milk. Finally fold in the fruit.
4. With a small amount of icing sugar lightly dust a worktop space and then roll out just less than half of the marzipan into a circle (the size of the tin) which will fit in the middle of the cake.
5. Tip half of the cake mixture into the tin and smooth down. Place the marzipan circle on top of it. Spread the rest of the cake mixture into the tin on top of the marzipan and level. Bake for about half an hour and then lower the oven temperature to 150°C for another hour and a half or until the cake has risen and is firm on top. Allow the cake to cool completely on a rack before removing it from the tin.

NOT JUST ANOTHER ICE-CREAM SHOP Portsoy Ice-cream shop is in the heart of Portsoy Village, Banffshire
W
e heard about this amazing ice-cream shop from a few people so we decided to go check it out for ourselves. When we arrived we noticed that there was a lovely seating area, which was perfect, as the weather was not great outside and so we decided to sit in. We went over to the counter to have a look and noticed the huge variety of ice-creams, hot and cold sauces, lots of different toppings and the amount of different ways you can have your ice-cream. What stood out for me were the waffles, especially the Bubble Waffles. After much thought we decided to have the Sharing Platter which consists of 6 scoops of ice-cream (your own choice), two hot sauces, frozen berries, marshmallows and waffles. The Sharing Platter definitely had more than enough on it for two people with six different ice-creams. We chose Bubblegum, Creme Egg, After Eight, Honeycomb, Vanilla and Raspberry Ripple, underneath which, were the waffles with chocolate sauce. This was accompanied on the side by Salted Caramel hot sauce, Fudge hot sauce, and marshmallows. We also wanted to try the Bubble Waffle which looked amazing – this has a scoop of ice-cream, hot sauce with fudge and marshmallow toppings. The Bubble Waffle was a delight to eat and it was so good I ate most of it. Our visit to the Portsoy Ice-Cream shop was certainly a treat and I will be going again very soon. I now know why people
talk about this ice-cream shop and say it's different from the rest. Both the ice-cream and waffles are home made, the staff are so friendly and very helpful. If you would like to take ice-cream home they offer a selection box which has 16 scoops of your choice, the box can keep the ice-cream perfect for 1.5 hours of travel. The Portsoy Ice-Cream shop does even more offering hot chocolate, coffee, tea and milkshakes. They also cater for birthdays, weddings and lots of other different types of events. There are gifts in the shop and selections of jam, marmalade and chutney. It really is an amazing place to visit and a treat for all the family, I will definitely be recommending the Portsoy Ice-Cream Shop. After your ice-cream there is so much more to explore in Portsoy.
