PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS There are no empty promises in the Bible... Has anybody else noticed how magnificent the poppies have been this year, over late Spring and early Summer…? Don’t think I have ever seen them grow so tall and some of the beautiful red and orange flowers are so big and vibrant that they put me in mind of dinner plates. The poppies that we see growing in the fields are stimulated into growth when the ground is disturbed and the seeds are exposed to the light, usually during the ploughing season in the Springtime. Every poppy flower produces about 17,000 seeds and some of these can lie dormant in the soil for at least a hundred years before bursting into flower when the conditions are right. This was what happened around the battlefields on the Western Front during the First World War, when the ground had been churned up by exploding shells and landmines. A lot of what we see happening in nature can speak to us of the things of God and the deep truths that he has set in store for us to discover in the Bible.
Back in the 1500s, the great Christian thinker, Martin Luther, said that “God doesn’t just write the Gospel in the Bible but he writes it on the trees, in the flowers and clouds and stars as well.” A lot of what we see in the news brings home the fact that we find ourselves in extremely troubled and unsettled times; we are blessed indeed to live in such a relatively stable area of the world, even given the many problems and struggles that many folks are having to cope with. We are blessed too, to have the promises of the Bible which give us a real sense of security and hope that can lift us up ~ even at the hardest times in life. A well-known promise of Jesus concerns the sparrows, when he asks his disciples, “What is the price of two sparrows ~ one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” When I was wee and growing up in a fairly poor area of Edinburgh in the

1950s, I remember there was a Soup Kitchen on the corner of our street. I didn’t quite understand the significance of it then… that all of us need a helping hand in difficult times… and filling a hungry tummy is one of the most practical ways of offering help. Fifty years on and we find history repeating itself with the need for Food Banks. Physical hunger is fairly easy to recognise and can hopefully be satisfied. But spiritual hunger can gnaw away at us too, and it isn’t quite so simple to recognise. We can try to fill it with all kinds of things, but only the love of Jesus will truly fill it. There are no empty promises in the Bible and Jesus offers us this invitation: “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest… ..Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart and you will find rest for your souls.” His arms are always open and walking towards that embrace is the best decision we will ever make. Christian, there is a great harvest for your Lord and He sends forth all His Children; He sends you. Lambs wouldn’t last long among wolves, and yet that is how the Lord Jesus sends His people out in this world, they must be totally dependent upon Him and not themselves for protection, for food, for service. Lean not unto thy own understanding. In all thy ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.

LOGIE STEADING Diva Designs We have been making felt here at Logie for the last six years - everything we display and sell is made here in our open studio so visitors can see the whole process and ask as many questions as they like! A frequent question is “how does felt work? What IS it?”. So as you may imagine we are often awash in soapy water and covered in fluff... Although we make many light and floaty scarves, hats, wall hangings and much, much more, we don't often find ourselves called on to make really large work. However, just recently, we were commissioned to make a large felted landscape to decorate three of the >V ÕÃÌ VÊ«> i ÃÊ ÊÌ iÊ" ÛiÊ/ÀiiÊ >viÊ iÀiÊ>ÌÊ } iÊ Steading. / iÊ" ÛiÊ/ÀiiÊ >`ÊÀiµÕiÃÌi`Ê>Ê i>Ì iÀÞÊ > `ÃV>«iÊqÊ something that really embodied the essence of the Highlands of Scotland. Getting into the Christmas Spirit There are few things more magical than the atmosphere of the traditional Christmas market, generally held across European cities in November and December. Every year more and more visitors are enjoying the unique festive charms of Christmas markets in German cities such as Cologne, Nuremberg and Dresden as well as in other European cities such as Vienna, Bruges and Prague. The twinkling scenes of festively decorated plazas with their enchanting market stalls and glittering Christmas trees set against the backdrop of beautiful historic buildings, let visitors relive the magic of yesteryear. The smell of hot mulled wine and roasted chestnuts fills the air. Nuremberg’s Christkindlmarkt is one of the biggest and most famous of the Christmas markets. Nearly 200 festive wooden stalls adorn the Old Town square from the beginning of Advent. Over 2 million visitors from all round the world enjoy the candlelit stalls in this beautiful Bavarian city. There are 21 Christmas markets in Vienna. The Advent Market is in front of the fabulous Schonbrunn Palace where visitors can buy traditional tree decorations, handmade gifts and a large selection of culinary delicacies. There is also the Christmas Village in Maria Theresien Platz with 50 stands with a wide range of goods and a choir is often to be heard.
Italy also boasts Christmas Markets - based in the delightful town of Arco, a short distance from Lake Garda's northern shore, and a gateway to the majestic Dolomite mountains beyond, this festive break includes visits to the wonderful Christmas Markets at Merano and Bolzano, and offers opportunities, on optional excursions, to visit incomparable Venice and Romeo and Juliet's Verona. If you are looking for an extra special treat for children or grandchildren what could be more exciting than a trip to Lapland. This really is a once in a lifetime experience – seeing Father Christmas in his secret hideaway deep in the pine trees. It is the stuff that dreams are made of and you can see it on the faces of young and old alike. A trip on a skidoo or in a sleigh pulled by reindeer – the excitement can all be fitted into a day trip – a long and busy day but it is possible! Alternatively a few days provides a more relaxed atmosphere giving you more time to try out the winter activities
In Prague the markets takes place in Wenceslas Square and in Old Town Square. Huge Christmas Trees sparkle, 150 wooden stalls many selling traditional crafts and the sound of Christmas concerts taking place all add to the magical atmosphere.
