The Editor “Did you enjoy your week of summer?” I heard someone say recently! Living on the Moray coast I have grown to expect the unpredictability of our weather - reason to moan, maybe? But look beyond the rain and view our beautiful Scottish outdoors. We may not have Sorento sunshine, but we’ve got scenery that is the envy of the world. So get out there and enjoy our spectacular Moray Coast - just don’t forget your brolly!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Jesus loves every one of us I was smiling away as I read a children’s joke book recently, realising that things don’t always have to be sophisticated or complicated to be funny. In fact, is it not often the case that there’s much to be said for the simpler things in life, whatever sphere we find ourselves in? Remember the old “Doctor, Doctor” jokes…? “Doctor, Doctor, I feel like a bell”. “Take these, and if they don’t work, give me a ring.” “Doctor, Doctor, I keep thinking I’m a dustbin.” “Don’t talk rubbish.” “Doctor, Doctor, I feel like a pair of curtains.” “Pull yourself together.” Sometimes an elderly person I’m chatting to will share with me the fact that they have known that Jesus loved them since they were very young. One lady, who now rests in what the bible so beautifully describes as “The Everlasting Arms”, told me before she died that she had always known that Jesus was her Friend, and that He was always with her. Uncomplicated faith like that is a very precious and uplifting gift and my own
belief is that God sets other Christian believers in our lives to encourage and nurture us, no matter what stage we may be in our walk with him. The trickier bit is that the onus is on us to take the time to listen ~ as well as to keep on searching for God in all the things that are going on around us day by day. Jesus often spoke to working people who laboured hard in the fields, maybe, or out on the hills as shepherds or in other commonplace jobs there may have been at that time. And his message was very often simple to understand as well. “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me.” “Come to me, all who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Of course there’s a place in our churches for well-trained theologians who have studied hard to give us good teaching about God’s Holy Word and how to grow in our relationship with the living Christ. But just as importantly, there’s a place in the pews too, for those whose faith is not only straightforward but sure and steadfast as well. On one occasion Jesus’ followers asked him “Who’s the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” and he asked a little child

to come forward and he said, “…unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven. So, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Could it be that sometimes a small child may have a deeper faith than someone preaching from the pulpit? And do we give our wee ones opportunities to talk about their faith, or has it almost become an embarrassment nowadays, to talk about the love of Jesus outside of our church? There’s certainly a lot of discussion going on inside all denominations of churches, about what the bible says about this, that and the other. But the most important message of all is that Jesus loves every one of us. A message that’s as simple as they come. But as deep and as meaningful as they come as well.

PARLIAMENT BLOG Firstly I would like to take this opportunity, in my first blog post, to thank the people of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey for their overwhelming support during the election. Although I received over 50% of the vote, I am determined to work for everyone in the constituency. I’m already working to deliver on my election commitments and supporting people who need my help in this constituency. Some of the early work has involved getting a fairer deal on mobile coverage and progressing further investment in this area. Getting a team together and an office set up has been a real priority since my election. During my campaign I talked about being an accessible MP and I absolutely want to deliver on that promise. I am already holding surgeries across the constituency and look forward to meeting many more constituents over the summer break.

Marine tourism has been growing in Scotland. Marinas have sprung up around the coast with busy berths at Inverness and Nairn. Sailing has become more popular as has cruise liners with nearly half a million passengers enjoying voyages round Scotlands coast stopping off at places such as Kirkwall, Invergordon and Stornoway. The Caledonian Canal is a world class attraction and being developed further by Scottish Canals and successful businesses. It was fitting that in Holyrood before the summer recess, we debated the new Marine Tourism strategy. This seeks to make the most of our sparkling seas beautiful coastline and attract to Scotland more visitors in various niche markets. Whether it is sailing, yachting, swimming, diving, canoeing, kayaking or just sitting in a cosy corner watching the sea perhaps with a wee glass of vino - the sea has a certain pull for us all and so it is right that we make the most of it for our tourism sector.
