Here comes Santa, here comes Santa! If you have your own children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or any other children ,then you may well have heard these cries already and if not I’m sure you will shortly. For us adults, however, Christmas also gives us the opportunity to figuratively “open up the door to a neigbour or acquaintance and offer a hand of friendship putting disagreements behind us.

"God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe." (1st Timothy 4:10)
Reader, Salvation has been provided for all mankind, Christ died for all and His shed blood has power to cleanse all, there is no limited atonement with God. You alone are responsible to receive God's Gift, The Lord Jesus, for cleansing from your sin and getting right with Him. The righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ is preached unto all men and women, but the cleansing power and knowledge of sin forgiven is only upon all them that believe. PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Do you believe it? December is a month in which many of us journey to visit families and friends. We may journey by road, rail, sea or air but irrespective of the mode of transport our plans usually involve excitement at the prospect of happy reunions; and apprehension. What sort of travel conditions will we encounter? Will we be caught up in chaos due to adverse weather? Will roads be blocked or trains and planes cancelled? We carefully and joyfully make our plans but some things are beyond our control – they are in God’s hands. Consider Mary who was betrothed to Joseph who was of the line of David (Luke 1:26-30.) One day, astonishingly, the angel Gabriel went to her and said “Greetings, you are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.” This was not something Mary had planned, and understandably she was greatly perturbed about what it meant. Sometimes in the midst of everyday life people do sense an extraordinary presence which captivates them. It can be confirming and at the same time disturbing and people may ask what it is all about. Gabriel reassured Mary that she was greatly favoured by God and had been chosen to bear the Christ, God’s Son, by the Holy Spirit. Mary
could only respond “I am the Lord’s servant.” With heart and head bursting Mary hurried off on a journey to visit her relative Elizabeth in the hill country of Judea. There she learned of more strange happenings. Elizabeth’s husband Zechariah the priest had temporarily lost his speech because he didn’t believe the word of an angel (Luke 1:20) and Elizabeth herself was pregnant in her old age. These were extraordinary events, but in Jewish religious thought every birth was extraordinary as it involved a mother and father and the Holy Spirit. Perhaps the Holy Spirit was involved in the birth of your children? Poor Joseph was stressed out. Not only was his betrothed (betrothal was much more than a modern engagement) going to have a baby but there was also the prospect of gossip and condemnation. For Mary’s sake he planned to quietly divorce her (Matthew 1:18-19.) We may never know what secrets some people bear silently for fear of rejection or condemnation. It can be a real burden and an obstacle to joy. James, the brother of Jesus, said that we should confess to each other and pray for each other that we may receive healing (James 5:16) – but who can you trust?

We may confess and pray to God with the certainty that He will hear us; and we can ask him to lead us to a human confidant who will be honest, discreet and caring – indeed we may be that confidant. It was an angel of the Lord who counselled Joseph. So, a very young pregnant woman and her betrothed began that arduous threeday journey from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea to register in the Census (Luke 2:1-5), which among other things would be used for taxation purposes. To cap it all when they finally arrived in Bethlehem the only place they could find to stay was a cave! Yet in a short while shepherds and kings would bow before their baby boy and they would be bathed in the Glory of God and the world would never be the same again. Do you believe it? As the Apostle Peter said, “…though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy…” (1Peter 1:8.) May Christ travel with you always!

PARLIAMENT BLOG At the time I write this blog, I am Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism in the Scottish Government. By the time you read it, I hope that I still hold the post which is one of the most absorbing in the country! But of course the decision of choice of Ministers is that of the First Minister, and Nicola Sturgeon will now be Scotland's first female First Minister. She will rightly bring her own style and character to the post, and whomsoever she picks for her team, I will support her. In the words of the song: Que sera, sera. Whatever will be will be. Whatever her decision, I will continue in my prime responsibility as the MSP for Inverness and Nairn, and to do my best to help people who need my assistance, whether by e mail, phone or at one of my three monthly surgeries in Grantown on Spey, Nairn and Inverness. One of the things about my party is that we are a strong and united team - united by a shared vision of Scotland running her own affairs, and doing our best to do good for people in Scotland. Fergus Ewing MSP
2014 has been quite a year. It seems like only yesterday I was writing in these pages while thinking about the momentous year we had before us just twelve months ago. So a year on, how far have we come? Seeing our economic recovery take root and having more people in work than ever before has been very encouraging. There is more work to do, but 2014 has been a record breaking year for employment and opportunity. And the historic Scottish Referendum has inspired more political engagement, and has inspired more, much needed, powers for Scotland. I’m sure that the coming year will bring new challenges for all of us, but we will face them as we always do – with strength and community spirit. As always, please don’t hesitate to get in touch if I can help you with any problems, address any issues or answer any questions. I’m always happy to help. I’d like to wish everyone in Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
