PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Everyone is welcome. That's good news!
Jesus' closet and the writer of Matthew's gospel wants us all to know about them.
Jesus comes about doesn't really make any sense.
OK, hands up… amongst those that might pick up a Bible at all, who has ever spent time reading the genealogies at the beginning of Matthew or Luke's gospels, let alone the pages and pages of them scattered throughout the old testament? No?!
Tamar, in verse 3, we can read all about in Genesis 38. An outsider who goes about conceiving her sons by dubious means, and their father Judah doesn't come off looking too good either!
What's the point of all of this? Jesus was going to be different right from the start. Not the cosy, comfy image of a cuddly baby Jesus. Not the clean cut warrior of films. Not the squeaky clean politician. Jesus was going to be different. In his history are twists and turns. God has used them to get to this point, says Matthew, and he's not stopping there. He'll welcome the stranger, the outcast, the ones everyone else raises their eyebrow at or crosses the street to ignore. He'll bring about God's love in a new, earth shattering way.
It's not a trick question. If a New Year's resolution is to read through a gospel, then this might be the first verse to greet you in your endeavours: “An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” (Matthew 1:1 NRSV) Not an inspiring start, is it? Many folk give up even at that, confirmed in their view that there's nothing much of interest in there - and certainly not 'good news'. But there really is. Read on and you're in for a surprise. Listed in amongst all the names of men, who begat sons, who begat grandsons, are names that would raise the eyebrows now and would have caused an almighty stir back then. Like any good episode of “Who do you think you are?” there are a few skeletons in
And then there's Rahab at verse 5. In Joshua 2 we find that Rahab is a prostitute in Jericho who shelters Joshua's spies before the Israelites cross the Jordan and occupy the promised land. A foreigner and a prostitute, but someone who recognises God at work when others don't. Ruth has a whole book of the old testament about her. Another outsider, her faithfulness is an example to all. Verse 6 mentions the infamous Bathsheba. She and King David get up to no good whilst her husband is away at the front line. To cover it up, David gets her husband killed. This is the sort of thing “Who do you think you are?” loves! And then we get Mary. Matthew doesn't gloss over the difficult part that Joseph and she weren't married. Or that how

The little baby that Matthew is about to start his story of, and which we've all just finished celebrating again at Christmas, is going to turn the world upside down. In all of that story is good news for us all. Because it doesn't matter who we are or what we are, we have a place in that line up. No one's face doesn't fit. Everyone is welcome. That's good news! By now you are probably reading SpotLight sitting in your favourite chair (or sofa or bed) having over indulged in food, wine, tv and relatives. The period inbetween Christmas and New Year is a time to take a breather before we launch ourselves into the New Year celebrations. PARLIAMENT BLOG A guid New Year tae ane and a’ - I hope you all had peaceful festivities. I certainly enjoyed the rare opportunity to spend time at home with the family. The break also afforded me the opportunity to visit various charities for whom work does not stop over the festive period. Indeed, it was helping MFR Cash for Kids wrap gifts that reminded of the much quoted words that ‘we can judge a nation on how it treats its most vulnerable’. Whether it is buying gifts for children of families in difficult times or standing up for justice and fairness, here in Scotland we have a long history of leading with compassion and humility. Even in a time that people are feeling the pinch they are still generous enough to think of those who have less, those who need a helping hand. May this spirit and kindness be a feature of our society in 2016 and beyond.
The decision taken to scrap the Carbon Capture and Storage Schemes in Peterhead, and in Yorkshire may become to be seen as one of the most short-sighted ever taken in the UK - ranking alongside such as Dr Beeching's scrapping of the railways, or the slow destruction of our world leading occupational pension regime. Without taking carbon emissions from coal and gas fired power generation - how can climate change be tackled? And with it what an opportunity to be at the forefront of a new industry, not in true British fashion, at the coos tail? It is never too late to persuade the UK Government to reverse a poor decision; but I fear that a strategic opportunity has been forfeited. Only a few days before the decision, the Energy Secretary was extolling the virtues of CCS. So plainly the decision was made not by her but by Mr Osborne for political reasons. The worst kind, in my experience.

INNES HOUSE
Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.
Offer extended! Any couple booking their wedding within six months of their wedding date, will be offered complimentary wedding night accommodation along with a 'Champagne Toast' upgrade of their chosen drinks package
