PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS 'The Answer To Bad Religion Is Not No Religion' Most of us spend at least a little time at the New Year looking back over times past. Sometimes these memories bring us pleasure, sometimes sadness and sometimes questions. One of my memories is of someone saying to me that, as a minister, I must of course believe that faith is a good thing. That certainly raised some questions, because at that time I knew someone with anxiety problems who had been told by the doctor that their faith was a large part of their problem! I am sure that the doctor was right – because not all faith is healthy. As the New Testament says (James 2:19) `the demons also believe - and tremble`. Why? Because their belief did not bring them to follow the way of truth. Jesus also laid into people of faith on quite a few occasions. They objected when Jesus healed on the holy day (Luke 13:10-17), they complained when he accepted the gift of a woman of dubious character (Luke 7:36-50), they were furious when he assured a man that his sins were forgiven (Matthew 9:1-7). Every time they were acting according to their faith and every time they were
wrong. Their faith taught them the vital importance of obeying traditional religious laws. And each time Jesus made it plain that faith of that kind was a problem! Each time he put the meeting of human need ahead of the letter of the law. Indeed, in Matthew 23, Jesus launched a tirade against those whose hypocritical faith is damaging, both to themselves and to others. His whole ministry centred on obedience to the central commands of the law, to love God and to love other people as well. Many of us have been put off the Church by the actions of others and too often people of faith are judgemental and self-righteous. Perhaps those of us in the Church should even have the honesty to admit that others may have been put off by us! But 'The Answer To Bad Religion Is Not No Religion', to quote the title of a recent book by Martin Thielen. We have recently been celebrating Christmas and remembering the birth of Jesus, whose life revealed the character of God and who showed 'good religion' both in word and action. From the humble circumstances of his birth to the extraordinary demonstration of the forgiveness of God on the cross, his life

was one of love to God and to other people. He broke down all the barriers that we humans keep erecting to divide people – barriers of race, of sex, of religion, of wealth and so on. Do you remember the song 'Any Dream Will Do' from Jesus Christ Superstar? Well, that line is not true! Any dream will not do. Stalin had a dream; so did Hitler; so did Pol Pot in Cambodia and many others through the centuries, and dreams like that won`t do - they are evil. But of course that does not mean we should not dream – just that we should choose our dreams well! In just the same way, the existence of 'bad religion' or misplaced faith, does not mean we should write off faith as pointless. It simply means we must place our faith where it should be. For me, as for all Christians, that means our faith is in Christ alone, for as Paul wrote, He is the visible likeness of the invisible God. (Colossians 1:15) May you know his blessing throughout the coming year.

If your New Year resolutions are seldom kept, here is an alternative! Throughout the year, when something good happens that makes you happy, write it down on a piece of paper and keep it in a jar. The following New Year’s Eve read them all and remember how you felt. I plan to do this and maybe next New Year I will feel thankful instead of disappointed about all those things I didn't do!

Christian, the unbeliever can do what they want but you must do as you are told. “Desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby.” “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” you must be built up in your most holy faith and increase in the knowledge of your Lord and Saviour, the words of His mouth are to mean more to you than your necessary food. Christian, if you neglect God's Word and don't study it and apply it you will be taken up with profane and vain babblings, which will only increase unto more ungodliness.

Call today to join our practice Inspire Dental were crowned Best New Practice and Practice of the Year - North at the Dentistry Scotland awards, held in Glasgow on 7th November.

This makes a hat trick of industry award wins for Inspire Dental, after Bert Hay was crowned Dentist of the Year at the Scottish Dental Awards in May 2014. PARLIAMENT BLOG Let me start by saying that I sincerely hope everyone had a very enjoyable Christmas and New Year. I am writing this blog in December, so I can tell you that I am very much looking forward to spending some time with my family in Aviemore over the holidays. Hopefully I will see you out and about - if, like me, you are doing any last minute Christmas shopping. Christmas is a time for families and friends to come together. We also think of those less fortunate than ourselves and those who cannot be with their families at Christmas. It is a time to extend an extra helping hand to them, such as checking on an elderly neighbour or supporting those who are without their loved ones this year. I would like to end by wishing everyone in the Highlands all the best for 2015. If I can ever do anything to help you over the coming year, no matter how big or small, please do email me at danny@highlandlibdems.org.uk or call my office on 01463 711280.
2015 - Year of Food and Drink. Last year saw Scotland on the world stage as never before, with the both the Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup being hailed as the best ever. But in Government one cannot rest on past laurels. Yesterday’s trophies soon gather dust on the mantelpiece. So, the new year comes with more opportunities and for tourism 2015 is The Year of Food and Drink. Two thirds of visitors to Scotland cite as a reason to return, our high quality food and drink. Our natural larder is second to none. And it is now "cool" to cook - young males want to emulate Andrew Fairlie or Michelle Roux! Changed days indeed. Why not make a challenge to yourself - a late new year’s resolution. Why not do your bit for the local tourism industry in Scotland and the 211,000 people who work in it. Holiday in Scotland this year. Surprise yourself by the enormous range of things we have to offer. You won’t regret it!

Football Files
A profile on John Hughs, Manager of
Caledonain Thistle FC Time flies when you're having fun and it's certainly the case for Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager John Hughes.
Spend any more than sixty seconds in the man's company and his beliefs and ideas for football teams to play the game in the correct manner will quickly be evident. Hughes wants his side to play football in a style that is just as attractive as the Highland scenery surrounding the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.
The former Hibernian and Falkirk manager took over the reigns at the Inverness club a year ago taking over from Terry Butcher and made the move to the Highlands unsure of what to expect in his new surroundings.
That’s why it’s no surprise to see Caley Thistle once more towards the top end of the SPFL Premiership and aiming for an even higher position than last season.
Fast forward a year and like his predecessor, Hughes has settled nicely into the area and would even go as far to say he's in love with his new abode.
John Hughes and his team are looking to push on in 2015 and with the philosophy that the manager is implementing at the club, here’s to continued progress and success.
He's able to combine his biggest passions in the tranquil environment, cycling, golf and especially coaching football!!

INNES HOUSE
Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.
Any couple booking their 2015 Wedding with us during January 2015, will be offered complimentary wedding night accommodation along with a ‘Champagne Toast’ upgrade of their chosen drinks package.

Energy: Why is this a pressing local issue, winter 2014/5? Long dark nights…cold…snow on the ground. The comforting smell of holly. Perhaps a log fire with mulled wine wafting from the kitchen, surrounded by the comforting trappings of Christmas. The heating is high, lights are low and life is grand... As many as 15 million households would rather go without heating than pay sky-high bills, even though 36 per cent said rationing had affected their health and well-being last year, uSwitch found. Fuel Poverty is rising. HOW MUCH DO WE PAY?
QUALITY INSTALLATION IS CRITICAL
The average annual dual-fuel bill - covering gas and electricity - is about £1,264 per household. It is one of the largest regular bills that a household has to pay, behind mortgage or rent, and council tax.
Grampian Energy Services works primarily with Green Moray Renewables in Moray and the Highlands. A multi skilled and multi trade installer, they are able to tie differing systems together. Whether it is Solar PV to produce electricity, Solar Thermal to heat your hot water, a biomass boiler, a simple biomass stove or even a micro-wind generator. Green Moray Renewables have proven highly skilled and diverse. They have installed many of our projects right up to 50kW systems, often in the harshest of conditions, in addition to many of their own.
WHAT TO DO, WHERE TO BEGIN? ADVISING HOUSEHOLDS AND ENTERPRISES
Anyone can start the energy self-sufficiency journey. There’s much we can do to reduce our energy demand: Use Less, Lose Less, and Generate Onsite. Reduce heat loss, insulate, close up drafts, lag pipes and tanks, use heavy curtains over doors (like granny used to do) and use curtain liners. Fit low energy devices, LED lights, switch things off, don’t let hot water run, Grampian Energy Services gives advice to people no matter what their financial situation may be. Simple changes are simply better. HOME ENERGY GENERATION: SYSTEMS APPROACH
Each home, office and factory is unique. One solution does not fit all. Grampian Energy Services is not an installer and not tied to any preferred technology thus providing impartial, expert advice. They can guide you which technologies can work for you, Solar PV, Solar Thermal, when to use heat pump or deciding if wind power is right for your site. How do they tie together? Is energy storage viable? Get the honest opinion of experts.
Between Grampian Energy Services and Green Moray Renewables, they can design your system, complete the G59 grid connection applications, execute planning if required, provide an EPC and Green Deal reports, install your desired system (any technology), provide lifetime service and re-lamp you home with LEDs to boot. Green Moray Renewables and Grampian Energy supply customers with the most practical, cost effective solutions for their needs.
