Our latest in a long line of elections and referenda has now taken place and they tell us that we now have “certainty” (debatable perhaps) but I wonder actually how much in life really is ever certain and if it was wouldn’t it all get a bit tedious? Stability, maybe, but sometimes the unexpected can be fun and add a worthwhile challenge to life. I suppose, a good balance is probably what we are after. The ability to know most of what is round the corner but also have the opportunity to be surprised from time to time. As they say “Variety is the Spice of Life” - Anon!

When Marcus Mumford opened the One Love concert at Manchester’s Old Trafford with the words “Let’s not be afraid,” he channelled something deeper about love and hate. The events of the past few months have brought darkness and fear to our own streets in the UK and left us all reeling. Seeing youngsters and their parents caught up in an attack at the Ariana Grande concert sent shivers down every parent’s spine. Seeing the streets of London, that many of us know so well, being turned into places of murder, has left us all shocked. It would be easy to retreat at times like this. To put up the barricades and hide behind them. To let fear win. But Ariana Grande’s beautiful efforts to organise another concert, where the focus was love, inspired us all to find a different way to respond. The first of John’s letters, tucked away near the back of the New

Testament, contain these wonderful words that Marcus Mumford chimed with: “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear,” (1 John 4: 18, NRSV). Love casts out fear. It pushes it away. Drives it out. We’re all given a choice: to love, or to be fearful and bitter and broken. Choosing love is often the harder option, but the bravery of those involved in the recent attacks, and the way the cities of Manchester and London have responded, show us that it’s worth it. Because Mumford and the writer of John’s letter are right, love really does push fear away. The attackers want us all to be afraid and to start to divide and point the finger. Instead, we can choose to love and come together. Love is so much more powerful a weapon. Those of us who are Christians see the Cross as a symbol of love because on it, rather than blame humanity for all that they’d done, God showed

us that there were no lengths he wouldn’t go to and no limits to how much he loves us. Fear and hatred drive us apart. Love brings us together. I thank Ariana Grande and the other stars who performed at Old Trafford for showing us all that. However hard it is, let’s all choose love to banish the fear that divides and imprisons us, and instead reach out to those around us with love. For me, that love is God given, and as John says, “let us love one another, because love is from God,” (1 John 4: 7, NRSV). But whether love for you is a gift of God or a human response, the result can be the same….people, brothers and sisters, coming together, banishing fear. Gordon Strang Inverallan Parish Church

Words by the Wayside “For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.” (Psalm 86:5)

Reader, it is those who willingly choose the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour through repentance of their sins and faith in His atoning death, that He willingly bestows salvation upon. In God’s Family there are no conscripts; all have called upon God for salvation through Jesus Christ His Son. You must receive Him for yourself. Genuine repentance and salvation will always have a turning away from sin. All who call upon the name of The Lord shall be saved. Are you saved?

Course Grasses in the Lawn ! I am prompted to mention this now as this spring saw an emergence of course grasses in many lawns, more so than usual. What are course grasses ? They are “wild” grasses, as opposed to “lawn” grasses, typically pale in colour, a thicker, course looking leaf, and often seem to grow in clumps in the lawn. They are seeded by other course grasses already in the lawn, or can be blown in from neighbouring land, or even deposited in bird droppings.

a spring rake prior to mowing, you will lift the long stems, which can then be mown off before they produce seed. There is a good factsheet provided by the Royal Horticultural Society. If you search for www.rhs/coursegrasses, it should take you straight there. They are not weeds, so a lawn weedkiller wont clear them. If there are just a few clumps, you can dig out a square of turf (like a carpet tile) and put it in the bin. You can replace with a patch of turf, or seed with lawn grass. If there is a major infestation, that’s not realistic, and you might just have to get used to it, unless you are prepared to replace the lawn with a new one. They were prevalent this spring as lawn grasses were slow to start growing, because April and May saw drought conditions. Course grasses tend to tolerate and keep growing in these conditions, whereas lawn grasses don’t, so the wild stuff seems to dominate, even if only for a short spell until the main grass gets going. You can help prevent them spreading by mowing regularly. Also, if you give the lawn a quick swish with

Business Profile

Rosemount Hotel

Everything is prepared and cooked fresh to order Rosemount Hotel in Buckie is open to non-residents and prides itself on providing quality meals using fresh local ingredients, with fresh seafood being a speciality. Another highlight is the Afternoon Tea – everything is baked freshly for this on the day of your booking. There is a menu, but Rosemount would rather provide guests with a meal that they have chosen rather than stick rigidly to the menu – all you need to do is get in touch with them by the day before you wish to dine, at the latest, and discuss what you would like. They are not licensed, but you are very welcome to bring your own wine to enjoy with your meal. Everything is prepared and cooked fresh to order. Any dietary requirements can be catered for so, if you have any allergies, just talk to them and a dish will be created especially for you. They have built up quite a reputation, locally, for being able to cater for any requirement and going out of their way to do so! Owners, Ellen and Andy say that “it has been brought to our attention on several occasions that people with certain dietary requirements often find it difficult to eat out, but we discuss with them what they would like and make it freshly for them. We pride ourselves on the quality of our food which is all prepared and cooked on the premises, freshly to order, using local ingredients wherever possible. All we ask, is that guests pre-book their meals” Rosemount also provides the highest quality of accommodation with all rooms having been refurbished. There is a mixture of rooms available and the Superior Double En-Suite with the large spa bathroom is a must if you want a relaxing break, watching one of the beautiful sunsets over the Moray Firth.

All rooms have flat screen TVs with Freeview and free WiFi. Rosemount is open all year round, including over Christmas and Hogmanay and is open for lunch on Christmas Day. Small parties can be catered for, so if your club or organisation is looking for somewhere to try, just call and enquire. Follow Rosemount on Facebook, where you will see many reviews from guests and pictures of several meals that have been served. The key thing is, talk to Ellen about your requirements. It is advisable to book early to avoid disappointment as Rosemount already has many bookings, including some into 2018!

Entertainment

THE DROUTHY COBBLER

On the 2nd July, the 10ft Tall Theatre company bring a play by Oliver Emanuel to Elgin. Videotape is a story about a couple, one half of which has decided the time has come to leave. Set in Aberdeen and combining live action with video design, Videotape explores the lengths we go to for those we love. Music fans are in for a treat, with four excellent bands to look forward to. On the 7th, one of Scotland’s most popular folk bands, North Sea Gas, will be showcasing their talents. Having released 19 albums and toured all over the world, North Sea Gas are definitely not to be missed. The Routes Quartet will be performing on the 9th. Blending together the musical traditions of folk and classical, they manage to impart a new twist on traditional folk songs as well as writing their own original compositions. Featuring a blend of Scottish, Irish and English music, The Routes Quartet are ones to watch for the future. The 22nd has Martha Ffion performing her blend of folk, indie and pop. Now performing with a full band, Martha is now performing with a punchier edge but still wears her earlier influences on her sleeve including 60s icons like The Beatles, the Shangri-Las and Nancy Sinatra. Alistair McCulloch returns on the 23rd with ‘The Alistair McCulloch Trio’. Their annual Scottish tour has become a firm fixture on the folk calendar. Featuring Alistair on fiddle as well as Marc Duff (Capercaillie) and Aaron Jones (Old Blind Dogs), they have gained a reputation for dynamic concerts. As well as their usual Drouthy Cobbler Comedy Club on the 26th, they also have a sold out show by Scottish comedy legend Fred Macaulay on the 14th. Fred’s brand of humour mixes cheek, sarcasm and satire and and is the perfect remedy for a world filled with Trump, Brexit and Indyref 2. Tickets for all of these events are available at The Drouthy Cobbler and at www.thedrouthycobbler.co.uk Please be aware that while live comedy can often be hilarious, it is also highly subjective and some material might not be to your tastes!

Coffee & walnut swiss roll (gluten free) A real indulgence this month - one of my all time favourites an “anytime snack” with a cup of tea or coffee. Enjoy!! Ingredients: A little icing sugar 100g caster sugar ¼ tsp salt 4 eggs-separated seeds of 1 vanilla pod 100g very finely grated (& peeled) sweet potato 50g rice flour 20g finely ground walnuts 1tsp baking powder Method: Preheat the oven to 180, line a swiss roll tin with baking paper and dust with icing sugar to help prevent the swiss roll sticking. Whisk the egg whites with 2 tbsps of the measured caster sugar until stiff. Whisk the egg yolks, vanilla and remaining sugar until very pale and leaves a trail when the whisk is removed. Add the sweet potato and mix well. Using a spatula add about a third of the egg whites to the egg yolk mixture and beat. In stages, add the remaining egg white mixture into the egg yolk mixture, being very careful not to knock any of the air out. The best technique is a figure of 8 motion being sure to get the sides and bottom of the mixing bowl. Add the rice flour, baking powder and ground almonds and fold in until incorporated. Pour this mixture into the prepared tin and bake for about 15 minutes, then onto a new piece of baking parchment sprinkle some caster sugar and upturn the sponge onto this. gently peel the baking parchment off the sponge, and carefully start to loosely roll up the sponge and allow it to cool. 175g soft butter 350g icing sugar sifted 2tbsp instant coffee dissolved in a little hot water While the sponge is cooling, beat together the above 3 ingredients, unroll and fill the sponge, re-roll and put the kettle on to enjoy properly!!

“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” (1st Corinthians 15:22)

Reader, are you “in Adam” or are you “in Christ”? You are for sure one or the other. The Lord Jesus says those that are not with Him are against Him. No man or woman living shall be justified before God. They need to die in the death of Christ and rise again with Him in newness of life. Have you repented of your sins and received Jesus Christ as your Saviour? Are you born again? Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb? Are you “in Christ”?
