PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS
If you go into any supermarket there are labels of all kinds and all colours everywhere, on cans, jars, boxes and shelves. And, of course, labels are really useful in helping us find what we want and let us identify what is in the can or jar. Where labels are not so good is when they are stuck on people and when people are defined by that label. When that happens the real person can be hidden and lost behind the label, and there are many different labels. Some are religious, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic or Protestant. Then there are the other labels that can be put on people such as white, black, gay, lesbian, HIV, obese, anorexic, disabled, young, old and so on. The problem is that when a label is stuck on someone we often see only the label and we can forget the human being behind it. In the ancient world leprosy was a dread disease and people were often labelled as ‘unclean’. As such, they were shunned for fear of infection, and often had to live apart from their families and their communities, and, whatever they might have been, they became simply lepers. The Gospels tell us that one day a leper came and threw himself at
Jesus’ feet and cried, ‘If you are willing you can make me clean.’ (St. Mark 1: 40) He was asking for healing, certainly, but he was also asking Jesus to see behind the label of leper, to see the man behind the dreaded word. He was asking Jesus to reach across the barriers of prejudice, and fear to heal him and set him free. And the Gospel continues, ‘And Jesus, moved with compassion, put out his hand and touched him and said, “I am willing, be cleansed.” (St. Mark 1: 41). Jesus was moved with compassion for the man; he saw the human being and the need behind the label. Then the Gospel tells us that Jesus did the unthinkable, he touched the leper and the man was healed. (St. Mark 1: 42). There’s a story about an interviewer who asked an old woman what she would do if she knew she only had one day to live. She replied, ‘I’d go and get my hair done.’ The interviewer was shocked, ‘One day to live and you’d go and get your hair done?’ ‘Yes, because before I die I’d just like someone to touch me.’ Jesus refused to be put off by the label leper, or any other label for that matter. He reached behind labels and touched people, both physically and

emotionally, and that touch brought healing of body, mind and spirit. Someone once said, ‘Labels are for tins, not for people.’ Jesus loved people, not labels, and we too are called to share his compassion and his love one for one another (St. John 13: 34-35). We are called to look past the labels, to see the real people behind them, and, through the touch of our compassion, to make one another whole. Because labels really are for tins, and not for people.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWS
EXTRACTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF APRIL 2013 OF GRANTOWN-ON-SPEY & VICINITY COMMUNITY COUNCIL
Futurescapes Project Mrs C Vis-Christie attended the meeting to explain RSPB’s Futurescapes Project. The project has identified 83 projects in 38 locations in the UK, 2 of the projects are within the Cairngorms National Park; Badenoch & Strathspey farmed floodplain and the Cairngorms Caledonian pinewood. C Vis-Christie went on to explain both of the projects stressing the need for community support and building partnerships with farmers and estates. The major thrust of the overall project is to extend and connect areas of good quality wildlife habitat. B Dunlop articulated some concern regarding the intention to plant trees to join remnants of the boreal forest in the Abernethy, Glenmore & Glen Feshie areas, as these have regenerated naturally since their formation in the Post Glacial period and expressed his opinion that planting would degrade them forever. C Vis-Christie responded that she had no knowledge of proposals to plant within these areas. Matters Arising Strathspey Railway - B Dunlop reported that Transport Scotland have been obstructive in the placing of the bridge over the river Dulnain, which has resulted in the Army no longer being available to do the work. A private contractor has been approached to quote for the job, which will now not happen before September. It was observed by B Dunlop that the ‘Rails to Grantown’ project is more a social and economic development one and not primarily a transport project. B Dunlop went on to give an update on the HML 150 Celebrations planned for 3rd August. As it has proved too expensive to move the engine to the triangle, it has been decide to put a railway wagon there instead. The broken tree will have to be removed and the Community Council will sponsor the planning application required for this. The Publicity Officer is contacting the BBC to explore the possibility of television coverage.

Other issues: PA System – E Sutton to proceed with new installation. Service Point Hours – Cllr Douglas said that now the 3 month trial period using the appointment system is over, the results have to be analysed and Cllr Douglas will have these for the next meeting. Gritting the road outside the Primary School – Cllr Douglas indicated that the gritting routes are reviewed before next winter. Dog Fouling – Cllr Douglas told the meeting that there is no dog warden and only one Enforcement Officer who is based in Inverness and covers the whole of Highland region. Cllr Douglas has emailed him with the problem areas in Badenoch and Strathspey. Town Signs – E Sutton and Cllr Douglas have a meeting to discuss them on the 22nd of April to take place before the Team Grantown meeting. Allotments – B Dunlop said there had not been much support expressed at the Anagach Woods Trust meeting/drop-in. Cllr Douglas informed the meeting there is now a Community Garden established at Revack. Lay-by by the Spey – Cllr Douglas contacted BEAR and Highland Council re. placing bins at the lay-by. She also confirmed the availability of a portaloo at the lorry park and a night toilet at South West High Street, and suggested to Highland Council that a sign could be placed at the lay-by to inform drivers of this. Chairman’s Report J Beveridge wrote to Scottish and Southern Electricity to express concern about the work on the A9 over the busy summer period. They admitted that they handled the consultation badly and should have given more notice. Planning. B Dunlop told the meeting that after an enquiry from a member of the public he had checked the Community Council planning records and had found no

reference of an application for the chalets under construction at the caravan park. Malcolm MacLeod, Senior Planner at Highland Council had subsequently informed him that they required no planning permission because the Scottish Government deemed them to be permitted development. B Dunlop expressed surprise that the Community Council had not been informed. He and Cllr Douglas are to meet with Malcolm MacLeod to clarify the position. Badenoch and Strathspey Staffing We now have a new Area Commander in place, Ch Insp Mhairi Grant took up post recently. Ch Insp Grant has a longstanding connection with the local area having served here previously as a Constable and Sergeant. PC Stuart McKellaig, Kingussie, has now taken up his new post as Community Safety officer for the Badenoch, Strathspey & Nairn command area. He has now been replaced in Kingussie by PC Neil Doherty, who has worked in the area before.” Anagach Woods - B Dunlop said that the meeting/drop-in session on Thursday 21st of March had been successful and that 70 questionnaires had been filled in, with more made available in various locations in the town. AOCB Cllr Douglas and J Flannery presented a proposal for a wall at the entrance of the Cemetery; the Community Council agreed that this should be pursued with Highland Council. There was a discussion about granting the Freedom of Grantown to Suzanne and Shelley Grant. It was agreed that Cllr Douglas would find out more about the process. I am very proud that here in the Highlands, when we work together, we get things done. That is exactly what we have to do to protect our vital air links to the UK capital. I was very concerned to learn that Flybe had sold its Gatwick landing slots to easyJet last month. And while I write this, the outcome is by no means certain. But easyJet have a good record in the Highlands and already I have seen support come in from all corners of our community – including from local politicians, business leaders and the Highland media. Following my meeting with stakeholders in Inverness, I am confident that working together we have an opportunity to put a strong case forward that will ultimately see the routes maintained. Earlier this month, I was also delighted to be part of another important community venture, as I was invited to open the St Vincent’s Therapy Garden in Kingussie. The Garden will be of great benefit to patients and staff and it is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when the community bands together behind a project. The people of Kingussie should be very proud of what they have achieved in creating a spot for respite and to aid recovery for residents at the hospital. I am very much looking forward to hearing the thoughts of people using the facility in the months to come.

This week I went ice climbing with James Bond! To open the new ice climbing facility at `Xscape, Braehead, the ‘Snow Factor’, Britain's largest indoor real snow centre, I attended and, with crampons and ice axe, climbed up the minus 8C wall with the Daniel Craig look alike, who was amiably pointing his revolver at me as we both hung off the vertical face. Bit of a change from Holyrood! Actually the Snow Factor, along with the other central belt snow starter facilities at Bearsden, Bellahouston, and Hillend in Edinburgh constitute a great opportunity for the real ski centres - in Glencoe, Nevis Range, Cairngorm, the Lecht and Glenshee. For children can try out skiing, snowboarding , and now ice climbing, in the safe surroundings of these facilities, and get the taste of the huge exhilaration and enjoyment that snow sports can bring. That first taste whets the appetite for the real McCoy. Therefore I hope that we can do more to help young people in even greater numbers learn the basics and then find for themselves the unforgettable experience of Scotlands high mountains in winter.

review “friendly and efficient service...” A warm and welcoming atmosphere is what greets diners on arrival at the Royal Hotel & Restaurant in Keith. The dining room and its anteroom are up a short flight of stairs and offer comfortable chairs and tasteful decoration – an ambience that whets the appetite for what one expects to be a meal to relish. Every day the restaurant has an excellent choice of specials as well as the more formal a la carte menu. The Royal specialises in fresh Scottish seafood and succulent rib-eye steaks, and we were told that the cranachan is to-die-for. We chose to be a little more delicate in our menu selection. To start we picked Butternut Squash and Ginger Soup – a warming, creamy and sweetish flavour with a faint ginger under-taste – extremely moreish, and a soup for which you would like to borrow the chef’s recipe. The Hot Goat’s Cheese was covered in a subtle herb breadcrumb coating that gave crunch to the smooth, clean and creamy cheese. The accompanying cranberry sauce was a rich and fruity delight to the palette. Seared Salmon fillets in caper butter beckoned, and the crispy skin and softness of the salmon was more than complemented by the vegetables and the smoothness of the melted caper butter. This was not for the faint-hearted – this was a man-sized portion (as indeed were they all). On our other plate was a Rack of Lamb, cooked to a professional and perfect pinkness. The creamed potatoes were silky smooth and spiced with mustard seeds, while the medley of vegetables was cooked to perfection – nothing soft and flabby here. The wine list was more than ample and diverse, offering crisp white sauvignon or chenin blanc to fully robust Chateau Neuf du Pape, as well as bubbly like Moet et Chandon should you be in celebration mode.

Restaurant Review by Karen & Peter Evans
The service was wonderful and ultra-efficient throughout the evening, and the friendliness was so commendable considering that too many hotel restaurants are renowned for being cold and formal. Would we choose to take our friends and family to The Royal for dinner? Emphatically, yes. We would recommend the warm atmosphere, the friendly and efficient service, the chefs and their delicious menus – don’t just take our word, book a table or two and enjoy your own evening at The Royal.

To most people, Paul Tonkinson might be known as 'that Northern bloke from the telly.' If you don't recognise his face, you might recognise his voice as 'that Northern bloke from the radio.' Paul started stand-up in 1992, when he won the Time Out New Act of the Year Award. Now a bone fide veteran of the comedy stage, you may also recognise Paul from his appearance on BBC1ʼs Michael McIntyres Comedy Roadshow.

Jarred Christmas has a unique style that deftly mixes gags with storytelling. He has a dynamic onstage persona and the ability to improvise and roll with anything thatʼs thrown his way, making his comedy sizzle with originality. Full of passion and charisma Jarred takes the audience on a hilarious thrill ride of laughs and gasps with an edge of anger that manifests itself in his incredible rants against the small things in our lives. His confidence leaves the audience secure in the knowledge that they are in very capable hands. His material is strong and distinctive, drawn from life experience and random happenings. His laugh out loud tales are packed with jokes and the good times flow non-stop with Jarred Christmas.
Zoe Lyons is a highly sought after act on both the national and international circuit. Zoë takes a sideways view of life, picking out the many absurdities and turning them into hilarious routines which she delivers with tremendous energy, drawing on her acting skills to provide a kaleidoscope of voices and faces throughout the act. She also demonstrated to the nation her ability to laugh in the face of adversity, as a contestant on ITV's 'Survivor!' where she ate a rat and lived to tell the tale.

Christ for Me Let others build their hopes of eternal happiness upon whatever foundation they please; my choice is made – it is CHRIST FOR ME. Some are resting upon their blameless character, or upon their exemplary manner of life. Others are trusting the Church and its ordinances – membership, baptism, communion, long service, or official position. I dare not build upon anything that I have done, nor on anything a fellow-sinner might do for me. My only hope is the perfect sinless work of a perfect sinless Saviour: it is CHRIST FOR ME. My nature is corrupt (Psalm 51:5 , Ephesians 2:1-3). My best is stained with sin (Isaiah 64:6 , Romans 3:23). I need a new heart, a new birth, a new life, if I am ever to enter heaven (John 3:3 , 1 Peter 1: 3&4). The work of my salvation required the Son of God, Himself God (John 1:1&2, Colossians 2:9); to take to Himself sinless manhood (John 1:14, Philippians 2:5-8), in order to die for my sins upon the cross of Calvary (Isaiah 53:5&6, 1 Peter 3:18). Only by this means could I be redeemed from the power and penalty
of sin (Ephesians 1:7), and be born of the Spirit into God’s own family (John 1:12&13). That is why it is CHRIST FOR ME. Soon we must die, or else the Lord will come again, and then every hope will be submitted to its final test. How infinitely thankful I will then be, when by the merits of Christ’s precious blood I am transported safe into His presence, that I built upon a sure foundation and not upon a foundation of sand. How grateful then, that my decision, made in life, was CHRIST FOR ME. And when time shall cease and the day of judgement shall have run its solemn course, then shall the true Rock of Salvation tower in solitary grandeur over the wreckage of every blighted hope, delusive doctrine and human endeavour. While all those who built upon any other foundation shall languish in hopeless torment and misery in the lake of fire., I shall reign with Christ in endless bliss and glory, not through any merit of my own but simply because by the mercy of God I was moved to decide - CHRIST FOR ME. All other hopes I completely and utterly abandon. I have counted the cost; I have weighed the alternatives; I have made my choice – in life, in death, and throughout eternity, it must be – and it is - CHRIST FOR ME.

SAVE MONEY and keep warm this winter with our new heating from Germany Simple to install, powerful, economical, also ideal with wind and solar power This incredible heating could be the answer to help beat the ever increasing energy costs. Amazingly it is not gas or oil, nor solid fuelbut clean electric! All you need is a standard electricity supply and NO special night tariff. In Germany, Austria, Poland Russia, Eastern Europe and increasingly in the UK, more and more people are choosing to heat their homes and offices with this very special form of electric heating in preference to gas, oil, LPG or any other form of conventional central heating or night storage. When you see this incredible heating for yourself, you could be next! As you can see from the picture, the heating looks just like a conventional radiator but STOP! It is very, very different! Put simply that clunky central heating boiler that needs constant servicing and replacement parts isn’t the only choice any more! Now you can choose to heat your homes, offices or extensions or conservatories with this incredible German heating which provides individual control over every single room without the need for a central control or space to site a boiler. Now the
boiler space can become a valuable storage area! Installation takes minutes and running is completely clean with no danger of leakage, no holes through walls, no floor boards up and no tradesmen trundling around the house wielding pipe cutters, spanners, hammers, wrenches and dirty work-boots! This incredible German heating simply plugs in and that’s it! Job done! You can even do just one room or the whole house. Get your free info pack right now by calling 01343 819676 or online at www.elsco.co.uk This heating is NEW in Scotland yet in many parts of Europe it has been a mainstream form of heating for a long time. We are the only outlet for this heating in the whole of Scotland, now giving a truly Scotland wide coverage operating from Glasgow for the central belt and borders and Elgin for Grampian and Highlands and Islands. Discover for yourself this incredible German heating, get your FREE info pack right away by calling Elsco Heating on 01343 819676 and ask for John or online at www.elsco.co.uk

Dreaming of...
SPAIN Costa Daurada in the Catalonia region of Spain is the home to Salou and Portaventura, a firm holiday favourite with families and couples looking for some sun just a short flight away. Salou is a bustling Spanish holiday resort with an abundance of bars, shops and restaurants to cater for every taste, a beautiful promenade and sandy beach. The public bus service around the area makes it very easy to explore the surrounding area, whether it is the short trip along the coast to Cambrill with its fresh seafood restaurants and peaceful surroundings, or a trip in the opposite direction towards Tarragona, to Bonavista where the Sunday market is held, which is frequented by locals and tourists alike. A visit to Salou would be incomplete without a trip to Portaventura, the theme park with its variety of rides and shows for people of all ages. Travel through the different worlds of China, Mexico, Polynesia, the Mediterranean and the Far West to experience the different concepts in each destination. For you thrill seekers Portaventura is also home to the tallest and fastest rollercoaster in Europe; you could easily spend a day here and leave half of the park undiscovered! An hours drive north of Salou is Barcelona, the capitol of Catalonia and the 2nd largest city in Spain. For a total contrast to your beach holiday in Salou a day trip to Barcelona is recommended. Spend the day wandering down Las Ramblas or exploring the city and discovering some of the stunning architecture designed by Gaudi, (highlights are the Sagrada Familia and the Park Guell). Last but not least, for any football fans, Camp Nou offers daily tours through the museum and stadium, with lots of photo opportunities, and even the chance to get your hands on the Champions League Trophy.
