Pastoral Letter and Church Meetings What is it that makes this message that we call the Gospel into “good news”? Let me show you, through a story of my days as a missionary in South Africa: Dodging animals and all the results of animals scattered on the ground, the young Zulu pastor and I slowly walked up to the door and called out in typical Zulu fashion. “Qho Qho Qho” (knock, knock, knock) “Yebo, ngena” (yes, come in) was the reply. We continued to stand at the doorway instead of entering, so a disheveled young Zulu woman staggered toward us. She peered at us through bloodshot eyes with a shocked expression on her face. “Oh, it is you, the pastor. You have come to my house!” she exclaimed in amazement. “Yes, we have come to visit you and to thank you for visiting our church last Sunday. And to ask you, ‘Do you know the way to Heaven?’” “Oh, no, I do not know the way, but I would like you to show me.” We opened our Zulu Bibles to Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God,” we read, Before we could say another word, tears began to roll from her eyes and drip down her trembling chin.

She let out a sigh of agony and said, “Yes, it is true I am a very bad woman, there is no hope for me! Bad, bad bad!” “Then let us show you the road to heaven . . . “ “NO!” she passionately interjected, “I am too bad. Too, too, too bad!” “Then you do understand that you are a sinner?” I innocently questioned. “Oh, yes, it is very clear that there is no hope for me!” “Yes there is! Let us show you the way” We flipped our Bibles quickly to Romans 6:23 and showed her that the, “. . . wages of sin is death . . . “ There were more uncontrollable sobs and rushing tears and she dejectedly turned to slink back into her hovel. “NO! there is more! Let us read the rest of the verse,” we quickly read the blessed words, “. . . but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ ...“ Feeling the burning despair of this sorrowful woman, we hastily turned to Romans 10:9-10 and showed her the need to confess with her mouth the Lord Jesus and to believe in her heart that God raised Him from the dead. And then quickly flipped to Romans 10:13 and showed her that she needed to call upon His name for salvation.

“Would you like to call upon the name of Jesus Christ today and receive Him as your Saviour from your sin? Would you like to make Heaven your home?”, we passionately asked. “YES, certainly!” she simply answered. We said, "Sister, you must pray and just ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins and be your Saviour." She prayed with a broken heart, confessing her sin to the Lord and asking Him to be her personal Saviour as the tears continued to course down her cheeks. After her prayer, when she lifted her head, a smile beamed out from her teardrenched face; the joy of salvation beamed from her soul. The next Sunday, we rejoiced with her as she gloriously testified before the whole church of her salvation. She said, “I have never known such joy before in my whole life!” Now, is that not good news? Is it the same good news for the Scottish Highlands as it was in Zululand? YES! Because the same Bible says, "For whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." (Romans 10:13) Will you call upon Him today? Rev Ri ck Moel ler Grantown on Sp ey Bapti st Churc h

Parliament Blog

“ Parliament Blog ”

The saying goes that we are all Jock Tamson’s bairns. So, whatever differences we may have as MSPs in different political parties in our Scots parliament - we have a common bond as fellow citizens. In fact, behind the scenes we do, by and large, get on fairly well. There is a fair amount of good humour in the debates, which is necessary as some of the topics are fairly technical, not to say dull! In an earlier debate, the First Minister gave a tribute to her Majesty the Queen on the occasion of her 60th anniversary, her diamond jubilee. Alex said that he could not reveal what he and her majesty talked about in their meetings, "But", he said, “I can say without revealing state secrets that we may have talked about horseracing." He is a noted follower of the horses. So, I commend to Spotlight readers a look at the debates which you can see online by going to the Scottish Parliament website. Enjoy! Fergus Ewing MSP

The Queens Diamond Jubilee has been a nationwide celebration with events being held all over the country to celebrate 60 years since Her Majesty’s coronation. Living in the Highlands, however, the weather can often be a source of frustration on national holidays. This is especially true if the organisers are attempting to light a flame as part of the celebration. Nonetheless, the weather has been fantastic this month and on Monday I was delighted to attend the Ecumenical Diamond Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving in St Stephens Church, followed by a special Bunkers Festival that was held in the city centre. This was concluded by the finale show where the Inverness Beacon was lit above Inverness Castle followed by a fireworks display above Inverness Cathedral. Congratulations go to the organisers, as the event went down without a hitch.

Pa System - e Sutton had requested and received a quote from DM Aird to inspect the whole PA system, the cost being £55. it was decided to go ahead with this. traffic Wardens – Cllr Douglas has approached other Community Councils to collate any problems that they may be having in order to build the business case for having more hours assigned to the Badenoch and Strathspey area. ian Charles hospital - Cllr Douglas stated that in order for the consultation process to

start, local agencies throughout the Badenoch and Strathspey area needed to start liaising with Dr B Peters and Nigel Small. Water Supply – There will an information event held on the 9th May from 3.30 to 7pm in the Aviemore Conference Centre and an open public meeting will be held on 30th April at 8pm at the Cairngorm Hotel. Cllr Douglas stressed that people really needed to complain officially via the helpline as Scottish water had currently received very few complaints about the quality of the water. Chairman’s Report J Beveridge reported that he had attended the Grantown Business Association AGM and although there had not been a large turnout, the event triggered some of the activity around the Diamond Jubilee and olympic Torch celebrations. Reports from Sub-committees Festive Lights e Sutton informed the meeting that a fundraising ‘Texas Scramble’ was to take place at Craggan outdoors with up to 40 teams of four. The teams would pay £60 to enter and must include two players with golf handicaps. Holes will cost £20 to sponsor. Motormania e Sutton told the meeting that there were now upwards of 35 entries for cars and 25 stalls/stands already signed up for the event. An application has gone in to close the Square and High Street to traffic for the event. Community Centre J Beveridge had received the youth Leader’s report which detailed the most successful cinema event to date – The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party with a showing of

Alice in wonderland. Police Report There were 95 recorded incidents in and around Grantown on Spey since the last C.C. meeting, compared to 113 for the same period last year. High visibility mobile and foot patrols have continued in and around The Square regarding youths congregating in their cars and a number of vehicle defects have been dealt with for defective lights, number plates and exhausts. Also, a number of fixed Penalty Notices have issued for Road Traffic offences including driving whilst using a mobile phone and obstructing the carriageway. These patrols will continue. Sgt P Hindley clarified the position relating to parking on the pavement, that unless it was causing an obstruction then it did not represent an offence. anagach Woods B Dunlop reported to the meeting that four large birch trees had been felled by the Poorhouse Car Park without permission and removed unlawfully from the woods. He went on to explain that this is the first year that no warden would be appointed to monitor the Capercallie leck although it was possible that the RSPB would come and do a count, but this would only be on 2 days. There will be a public meeting to consult users of the woods on capercaillie and dog issues in an effort to promote responsible behaviour. The Community Payback Squad has again been very active carrying out works such as filling in potholes. The litter problem is ongoing and Cllr Douglas suggested that as part of the ‘Keep Scotland Beautiful’ campaign, the Guides were looking for places to tidy up and were happy to help in Anagach.

Dreaming of... Malta – Something for everyone

Rich in history, crystal clear seas and brilliant blue skies means that Malta and her Islands have something to offer most travellers. The fact that there is so much history and so many historical sites on the Island, never fails to amaze its visitors. Small but perfectly formed, Malta is only 17 miles by 8 miles, but whether you want the rich history of the country, snorkel and dive or simply relax, Malta has it all. With summer temperatures reaching over 30 degrees and winter temperatures rarely dipping below 15 degrees, you can holiday all year round with some great long stay deals to be had in the cooler months. A highlight is the Blue Grotto which is one of the islands gems, a series of natural caves and only accessible by boat you will be taken into caves where translucent waters are truly blue, giving the grotto its name. Visit the Mosta Dome which can be seen towering over the capital city of Valletta. Built by the Knights of St John, Valletta is rich in history and architectural treasures. It also makes a great city break. Another must is Mdina (say as M-Dina). The silent city is medieval and was the former capital. A fortified relic, it is reminiscent of an era which has long since disappeared. 20 Minutes by ferry is Malta’s sister island of Gozo. A typical Mediterranean island, it is a world apart from Malta. Greener and more fertile than Malta, the Gozitans live life at their own pace but now share their island with visitors to the selection of hotels from budget to luxury spa – or even a farmhouse for an authentic experience. If you can’t spare a week here try it as a two centre with Malta or it can be done in a day and use the hop on hop off bus travelling around the island or take your hire car over on the ferry !
