The Editor In last month’s Editor’s View I mentioned that Winter seemed to be ‘hanging on’. Well - at the time of writing we still seem to clinging desperately to the Winter snaps. Still, for any sun lovers out there it appears that ‘down south’ is not much better! Not that we should seek to gain pleasure from the discomfort of others but that sometimes it feels good to know that we are not alone!!

Pastoral Letter and Church Meetings “I am the true vine and my Father is the Gardner” John 15:1 This message that Jesus spoke to his disciples is to me one of the most powerful images we are given in the Bible. It was given in one of Jesus last talks to his disciples – It is a message of hope, a message of love and also a message of instruction. Let us first look at the image of Jesus as the true vine. Over and over again in the Old Testament Israel is pictured as the vine or vineyard of God. Israel is the vine – God’s people, and today we are Israel, God’s people. In our Gospel reading we have Jesus taking that symbol for himself. He is the living out of God’s promise – a promise of God’s love and eternal life. A message of love and restoration. He is saying; I am the true vine; I am the one who can save you. Through me you are loved by God. And we have that relationship by being the branches of the vine. We are connected to Jesus, we need him for survival. If a branch is not attached to its tree, then it is nothing more than a stick, a dead, lifeless piece of wood. This is
what Jesus is saying to his disciples. A vine, as we know grows, grapes. It is a plant that needs lots of attention if you want to get the best fruit from it. The ground it grows in need to be tended well, it has to be clean and well prepared. A young vine grows rapidly but is not allowed to bear fruit for its first three years and each year is cut back drastically. And each vine has two kinds of branches – ones that will bear fruit and ones that just don’t. So these are trimmed off so as not to drain the plant of energy. And there is a curious fact about the wood of the vine; off the vine it serves no purpose. It is too soft for anything. It was laid down in Jewish law that when bringing wood to the Temple for the alter fires, not to bring vine. What message does our Gospel verse have for us today? We are the branches of the vine. And we are living in a relationship with Jesus. He wants us to be the kind of branch that is full of life, bearing fruit for him and with him. He doesn’t want us to be dead branches with no purpose or use. He wants those who profess to love him and know him to put this love into action.

Love is nothing if we do not put it into action. As I write this we are approaching Christian Aid week. A week in which many Christians made a real effort through sponsored events or through door to door collections to raise funds for Christian Aid. Christian Aid is a charity that believes in life before death – that is, it values every life and works in some of the most desperate parts of the world bring the love of Christ to projects in practical ways through projects that aim to help address immediate problems and at the same time provide long term solutions. Jesus commanded us to love our neighbour. Love put into action says more than any words can. Bearing fruit for God as disciples of Jesus Christ – being the branches of the vine reaching out and touching the hearts of those yet to feel God Love. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 Rev Shuna Dicks Aberlour Parish Church of Scotland

Community Council News exTrACTS froM THe MiNuTeS of THe MeeTiNG of 8TH MArCH 2012 of AVieMore ANd ViCiNiTy CoMMuNiTy CouNCiL
Present: John Grierson, Bill Lobban, Alastair dargie, Audrey MacKenzie, david fallows (Highland Council), ian Malcolm AoCC, dr Boyd Peters (visitor), Tom ramage (press). Apologies: Lorna McGibbon, Neil MacNair, ron Whyte. John Grierson opened the meeting and welcomed all those present. He proposed that the running order of the meeting be changed to allow ian Malcolm and dr Boyd Peters, who had other meetings to attend to speak to the members. ian Malcolm ian represents the community council on the Association of Cairngorms Communities and had feedback from a meeting held earlier that week. The AoCC proposes that there be bi-annual meetings of Cairngorms Community Councils in conjunction with AoCC meetings. The CNPA will fund and provide the secretariat. it was agreed by those present that this was a step forward and very much in line with our suggestions to CNPA in previous meetings. it was agreed to support the proposal. ian was asked to pass on our support. JG also pointed out that the community council had not been receiving minutes of the AoCC meetings. ian is to ensure that they are received. JG thanked ian for his input. ian left the meeting. dr Boyd Peters - dr Peters, from the Grantown on Spey practice spoke about a meeting held in Grantown on Spey on 21st february, 2012 regarding ian Charles Hospital. The meeting had been reported in the press. John pointed out that AVCC had not been invited but that
he had received an apology from the organiser, Jaci douglas. dr Peters outlined the problems being encountered at the ian Charles Hospital and at St Vincents. Both facilities are struggling to keep up to standard and that the repair bill for both buildings was around £6 million. He said that repairs and maintenance would continue over the short to medium term, 5 years, but after that it would become challenging to find the level of capital funding required. There is an urgent need to look at how services could be better delivered and what options there were for the future. Local support for an investigation into a single site, along with other options, was needed. Members offered their support and agreed that the way forward was for a full options appraisal involving consultation with all the communities in Badenoch and Strathspey was essential and should be carried out without delay. JG thanked dr Peters for his contribution. dr Peters left the meeting. MiNuteS oF PReViouS MeetiNG The Minutes of AVCC held on 9th february 2012, which had been previously circulated were proposed by Alastair dargie and seconded by Audrey Mackenzie. tReaSuReR’S RePoRt in Lorna McGibbon's absence on holiday JG informed the meeting that funds stood at £8672.38 of which around £4000 was red circled for projects/grants. BuSiNeSS MatteRS aRiSiNG FRoM PReViouS MeetiNGS • olympic flame – No update available. • Silverglades road flooding – John
Grierson advised that there was no further information at present. • Provision of Child day Care Services dave fallows to follow up. • dalfaber Neighbourhood Signage –JG reported that a new sign had been installed at the shops and it is hoped that all temporary signs would be removed shortly. • fence at Craigellachie Nature reserve JG reported that he had been in contact with Scottish Water and that a repair will be effected. • flooding at orbital path in Milton Wood John Grierson advised that Bruce Loughman has arranged with Tullochs for channels to be dug to alleviate flooding. At this point Audrey Mackenzie had to leave the meeting. Before doing so she referred to a recent television programme about bees and insects and the need to provide more nectar bearing plants to ensure their survival. She suggested that this was something that could be incorporated in some of the flower beds or grassy areas in the village. it was agreed to approach richard Porteous to see if there was anything that could be done, if not this year next year. JG to follow up. Audrey Mackenzie left the meeting at 20:45. John Grierson observed that the meeting no longer had a quorum and that in the absence of a quorum, any business transacted is null and void and the only action that can be taken is to set time and date of next meeting. Business from this meeting would be carried forward, if still applicable, to that meeting.

Parliament Blog I am writing this from my Edinburgh office on the local government polling day. The reason I am here, is to take part in a number of meetings throughout the day, in relation to promoting business in Scotland – including in my own patch. So, for today at least there will, be no standing outside the polling station or kissing babies! Yesterday, was a very busy day with a two hour session spent appearing before the Energy Enterprise and Tourism Committee to deal with law on the Registers of Scotland. This was followed by attending the Enterprise question session in the Chamber, where myself John Swinney and Planning minister Derek McKay all responded to in total about twenty questions. These questions are largely delivered in reasonable Many asked about help for young people and small business. I was able to point out that
85,000 small businesses in Scotland have paid no or low business rates through the small business bonus. I visited Dalcross Logistics who have received this help, and used the benefit from it to conduct training for staff thus contributing to their business success. This week, I have also met with representatives from the Scottish Gamekeepers Association – whose members are the real custodians of much of our countryside, and rural economy. I have always felt that the best way to find out how things actually work in practice is to speak to those who are most closely involved in their daily working lives. Gamekeepers look after the hillside, the moorland, and their animals. They spend their working days on the hill, outdoors, not in front computers, and no one in my opinion tend to have a better or closer understanding about how things work. All too often the statutory government advisors have dismissed their views as “anecdotal
evidence.” It is most certainly not. A Chinese proverb said that “When I hear, I forget; when I see, I remember; when I do – I understand!” Gamekeepers do – and they understand. Many of those who are not actually working in the countryside, but are said to be “experts” do not have that direct experience, and lawmakers especially, should do well to bear that in mind. They care deeply for their animals and look after them well. They are also great fun and good company. So, I hope that we will as lawmakers listen carefully to their views, to ensure that the rural economy can flourish.

The Antiques Roadshow at Cawdor Castle A raft of antique experts will validate and examine the various items testing their knowledge and offering insight into the stories and traditions of old…..much like a visit to the Castle itself!
Cawdor Castle is proud to welcome the BBC Antiques Roadshow on Thursday 21st June. The Roadshow was last in Inverness-shire in 1995. Cawdor Castle, a magical place steeped in history is the ideal location for a show, renowned for uncovering history. As is frequently the case we envisage that the crowds attending will bring their precious trinkets, artefacts and memorabilia, that will no doubt unveil a hidden gem from years gone by, or perhaps a dormant heirloom with high value that will bring a smile to the owner’s face.
Walking round this 14th century Castle one is fascinated by the history, stories and atmosphere of the home of the Thanes of Cawdor – mentioned by Shakespeare in his play Macbeth. There is also the added pleasure of reading through the late Lord Cawdor’s room notes that will certainly amuse the reader. The event will be an exciting day for all involved and attending. The stunning gardens will be in full flower giving spectators and visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy the hard work of our Cawdor Castle gardeners. Cawdor Castle and Gardens will be open to the public until Sunday 30th September, daily from 10am to 5pm. Tel. 01667 404401. Email info@cawdorcastle.com

When the party is over... We see in the Bible that we are all unclean in God’s sight because of our sins. You may not think that you are a hell-deserving sinner, but God is Holy and He hates sin. Sin will keep you from being with God in heaven for eternity and damn you to Hell, unless you receive God’s forgiveness for sin which is found only in His Son Jesus Christ. God’s word reveals that if you die in an unclean & unforgiven state, because of your own choice, you’ll go to hell with all the other people who refused God’s mercy. There are many people, and you may be one of them, who believe that life should be one never ending party; friends to meet, places to go, and things to get and do, seeking constant amusement in the pursuit of happiness, needing non-stop activity to fill the emptiness inside, to fight the boredom that surrounds them.
You may think. “That’s okay - all my party friends will be there too!” Yes, sadly they will be there too if they too reject Christ, but the thick blackness of “outer darkness” will separate you from each other. It is a place of torment, never ending fear and punishment and you’ll be there on your own.
Right now you are without God in this world and have no hope, but in Christ Jesus you, who are far off, can be brought near by the blood of Christ; He Drugs, alcohol, immoral relationships, money can be your peace. You can know that when you and music are some of the most popular die (and you will die) you will be in Heaven, not choices in this party called life. Dreaming of... A different side to Tenerife!
With more and more holiday makers looking to travel from their local airport, Tenerife may seem to be a repetitive choice, but why not try some of these Canary Islands hidden gems. The island of La Gomera lies to the west of Tenerife and is ideal for a short break or as a twin-centre with Tenerife. Just a 45 minute ferry crossing from Los Cristianos, it is a far cry from the lively southern resorts. Steeped in history this sleepy island is unspoilt and has a dramatic landscape of terraced valleys and plunging ravines, and according to the locals the best views of Mount Teide. Car hire is definitely the best way to see the best of this island, roads are winding but recently resurfaced and widened and are easily navigated. The Garajonay National park with its dense, lush flora and fauna is a walker’s paradise with mapped trails and guided walks through the rainforest. Lunch at the Casa Conchita restaurant is a must with traditional cuisine, local wines and spectacular panoramic views from your table. Back on Tenerife, there are unspoilt towns such as Garachico, recently featured on channel 5’s Holiday Heaven on Earth. Garachico in the north of the island is an uncommercialised fishing village and an ideal way to see real Canarian life! The locals still meet in the evenings under the old trees in the bustling town square. And the crystal clear waters at the volcanic pools are ideal for a dip, or for the braver a diving platform. Visit Santa Cruz, the historic yet cosmopolitan capital city in the north east with the abstract Auditorium Opera House, home to the Tenerife symphony orchestra, hosting numerous musical events throughout the year. The lively bazaar and food market also draw tourists to this area. Tenerife and La Gomera have a wealth of activities you may not associate with the islands including, hiking and rambling, mountain biking, paragliding, cookery schools, wine tasting, whale and dolphin watching, diving, swim with turtles, the list is endless. With year round temperatures of 20-25c and regular flights from Aberdeen why not discover a new side to Tenerife!
