Scottishness seems to be the hot topic at the moment with numerous debates on independence. Whatever our views on this though is it not just as important to care for one’s neighbour as we would like to be cared for irrespective of nationality? When we respect others as much as we respect ourselves then don’t we all win?

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS The story is about a Franciscan monk in Australia assigned to be the guide and "gofer" to Mother Teresa when she visited New South Wales. He was thrilled and excited. But during her visit, he became frustrated. Although he was constantly near her, the friar never had the opportunity to say one word to Mother Teresa. There were always other people for her to meet. Finally, her tour was over and she was due to fly to New Guinea. In desperation, he spoke to Mother Teresa: ‘If I pay my own fare to New Guinea, can I sit next to you on the plane so I can talk to you and learn from you?’ Mother Teresa looked at him. ‘You have enough money to pay airfare to New Guinea?’ she asked. ‘Yes’, he replied eagerly. ‘Then give that money to the poor,’ she said. ‘You'll learn more from that than anything I can tell you.’ Jesus had come on a Saturday morning to the synagogue. The people there knew Jesus – they had seen him grow from an infant through childhood, his teenage years, his years learning his father’s trade. And now here he is in front of them – this man who some say is the long awaited messiah, or who some say is a great
preacher and teacher, and others who dismiss him as a rabble rousing zealot. Whoever they think he is – he is one of them. And he is there in their synagogue. He is given the honour of reading the scriptures. A bulky scroll is brought to him and placed upon the lectern. Jesus, searching for a familiar text, unrolls it to a place near the end of the scroll. In a voice strong with anticipation, he reads aloud these words from the prophet Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people.” Finished with this brief passage, Jesus rolls up the scroll, returns it to the attendant and takes his seat. The people are all looking at him expectantly. Jesus has just read to them a defining and startling text. Defining, as it sets out who he is and startling, as it sets out who he is. In today’s jargon, he claims those ancient

prophetic words as his own personal manifesto. The reason God’s Spirit came crashing down on him at his baptism was to empower him to do precisely this: bring good news to the poor, release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind; let all the oppressed go free; announce the time is coming when God’s justice will reshape society. And that manifesto is as relevant today as it was then. It continues to be our manifesto. The church does not exist to simply gather on a Sunday morning and worship. It exists to continue the task Jesus set himself that Saturday morning, in a synagogue in his home town of Nazareth, in beautiful Galilee. When we give to the poor, when we campaign for justice, when we befriend the addict, when we help our neighbour – we do what Jesus set out to do in his manifesto. We still have work to do – we are Jesus’ hands today that will help reshape our society. Blessings.

Service Point Hours – On going. Safer Routes to School – Cllr Douglas tabled a plan of a proposal put forward by the Safer Routes to School Officer to address the dangerous junction at Woodside Avenue and Spey Avenue. Members of the Community Council had seen the plan before the meeting. There followed a discussion whereby it was decided that the Community Council will send some comments back to the SRS Officer to see if there may be a possible alternative closer to the roundabout and further from the bend. However, the proposal had broad approval. Roads and Crossings – Cllr Douglas told the meeting that there had been complaints from a resident about the beeper at the pedestrian crossing on the High Street at Spey Avenue and that the volume was to be reduced by 10%. The reported potholes are now on the ‘to do’ list. The parking issues around the Craig MacLean Centre were broached at the AGM and Donna Riley is pursuing the subject. Elgin Bus – Cllr Douglas said that Crom-

In addition, there is an investigation underway into the best route for a scheduled service. Burials – B Lobban said that it should be possible for two burials to be carried out on one day and burials can also be carried out on Saturdays. This is despite the fact that the number of gravediggers has dropped from 2 to 1.5. The Presbytery of Abernethy is monitoring the situation. He reported that the stretches of the road with no alternate route are to be done last. J Beveridge went on to tell the meeting that the Ward Forum had covered Strengthening Communities and that he had spoken to Insp MacLeod about Traffic Wardens and there was little chance of us having one in the near future. B Lobban suggested that, as local authorities would in future perhaps be able to collect their own parking fines that they could afford their own Wardens. P Mathieson argued that as Highland Council already collect parking fees they should release Wardens to work in areas other than Inverness.
C Sinclair reported that the next event will be the torchlight Parade on the 23rd of December from 7pm. He went on to thank the Community Council for its support. PARLIAMENT BLOG There are a great many people with a disability that work in Scotland in supported businesses - which are enterprises where more than half the workforce have a disability. I have the job of developing new ways to provide a sustainable future for this sector. At the same time, we are also trying to deal with the enforced tendering of Remploy plants in Scotland - instead of, as we would prefer, to find the best long term solutions, working with councils and the enterprise network through voluntary agreement. There are five plans in Stage two of the tender process - and I have visited them all and spoke with the staff. Harder working individuals you would not find. It is a matter of deep regret that the Westminster Government is forcing the tendering of these businesses and terminating the financial support they have enjoyed. Here in the Highlands, a great many parents look after adults who need care, and have special needs. There are some great facilities - like Cantraybridge College near Croy which I visited recently and provides day care for a great many young adults who benefit hugely as a result. As a society, I think it would be good to debate more often what we can do for the best for those adults with a disability. One area of work is that all public sector must provide contracts - work - for the supported sector to carry out. So far, 24 contracts have been agreed, and I have met leaders of procurement from the NHS, Police and other public services. I am also arranging for private companies to help - and many are already doing a lot behind the scenes. A team Scotland approach here will, I believe, deliver a fairer deal for adults with a disability, and for adults with particular needs. Fergus Ewing MSP
“ Parliament Blog ” Whether it’s visiting one of our award-winning dairies like Connage Dairy, meeting with specialist producers like the Really Garlicky Company, or choosing the Supreme Champion at the Grantown Show, I am always keen to speak to and support our local farmers and producers. As a Highland MP, I am very proud of the high quality local goods that we produce here in Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey. It is an important industry for many Highland communities – and it often does not get the credit it should. So, you will understand why I am also eager to ensure that our producers and farmers have the opportunity to continue their work and receive a fair deal from retailers. As a role that I have been campaigning for, for many years, I was delighted to see a new grocery ombudsman appointed last month. The new posting will ensure that retailers work with the grocery industry, and not against. As part of the Office of Fair Trading, the adjudicator will have the power to fine offenders and name and shame retailers who are not playing by the rules. I look forward to hearing about how the role has helped the next time I meet with some of our local producers. Danny Alexander MP

Dreaming of... ... a wedding in paradise
There is a growing trend to get married abroad in resorts which are well geared up for marriages. Civil Partnerships are also available in some countries where the law permits it, mainly in Canada, America and South Africa. Imagine combining the sand, sea and warm air of a Caribbean Island resort with its almost guaranteed weather rather than worrying whether the bride’s hair will get rained on at home. Photos and wedding cakes are the norm as are Champagne receptions and Wedding Dances if you take enough friends and family with you. Indian Ocean Island resorts such the Maldives and Mauritius have resorts that conduct at least one wedding every day, often on the beach, and performed by a Marriage Officer, whose title varies upon the resort, ie in Australia it will be a Celebrant, in Barbados will be a Minister or Registrar, and in Cyprus it can be an Anglican Minister. It is important that the arrangements are made through proper channels to ensure the marriage ceremony, bought in the UK but performed abroad, is compatible with UK Law and recognised as a marriage at home. Travel brochures specialising in Weddings and Honeymoons are now more popular than ever, one even extolling the virtues of the Minimoon and the Maximoon. A Minimoon is a romantic short escape after a wedding, giving you the chance to save up or take the time off at a later date. A Maximoon is for those with time to spare to indulge their ultimate travel fantasy, which for example might be discovering India and Nepal, Botswana in Style Safari, or a tailor-made Round the World trip. The ultimate White Wedding can happen in a ski resort in Lapland. If you’re looking for somewhere with the wow-factor, the Snow Village in Kittila is a serious contender. The frozen piece of architecture is rebuilt every year using a thousand truckloads of snow, and counts a hotel, a bar and a chapel amongst its credentials. In recent years the traditional Honeymoon can be enjoyed in a romantic city, in a quiet rural setting, in a fabulous hotel, or in a cottage in the mountains. Honeymoons can be tailored to any budget – after all you wouldn’t want to fall out over it after a few days of marriage would you‌?

When the party is over... We see in the Bible that we are all unclean in God’s sight because of our sins. You may not think that you are a hell-deserving sinner, but God is Holy and He hates sin. Sin will keep you from being with God in heaven for eternity and damn you to Hell, unless you receive God’s forgiveness for sin which is found only in His Son Jesus Christ. God’s word reveals that if you die in an unclean & unforgiven state, because of your own choice, you’ll go to hell with all the other people who refused God’s mercy. There are many people, and you may be one of them, who believe that life should be one never ending party; friends to meet, places to go, and things to get and do, seeking constant amusement in the pursuit of happiness, needing non-stop activity to fill the emptiness inside, to fight the boredom that surrounds them.
You may think. “That’s okay - all my party friends will be there too!” Yes, sadly they will be there too if they too reject Christ, but the thick blackness of “outer darkness” will separate you from each other. It is a place of torment, never ending fear and punishment and you’ll be there on your own.
Right now you are without God in this world and have no hope, but in Christ Jesus you, who are far off, can be brought near by the blood of Christ; He Drugs, alcohol, immoral relationships, money can be your peace. You can know that when you and music are some of the most popular die (and you will die) you will be in Heaven, not choices in this party called life. Caring for our equine friend
Most people understand that horses which are kept in some light work all winter, are less likely to become injured when the season for riding and competing begins. Keeping those muscles, tendons and joints toned, means that they have the capacity for coping with an increased workload as the season progresses. It isn't always practical or desirable to be exercising horses in the winter months and when horses first start hacking out or exercising in the new season, problems can first start to show up, which can lead to real problems later in the spring or summer. Vets would much rather deal with minor problems,
therefore hopefully preventing something major developing. Never be afraid to give your vet a call for advice, no matter how trivial you think the issue may be. Detecting problems early can often result in shorter recovery times. We wish you all a successful and injury free season.

Choctober in Elgin and now Nairn!! Whew... As always Olive Tree Chocolate look to see how they can improve on previous events and take Choctober forward into the future. This year sees some significant changes. "The 2012 events were so successful we have been specifically asked to take the event to Nairn. With that in mind we have the first event on Sunday 24th March at Elgin Town Hall, and the second event on Saturday 30th March at Nairn Community Centre. Schools are in until March 28th - this will hopefully allow more people to attend at Elgin before they go away for Easter break - and could attract tourists into the Nairn event." They are also introducing a competition element for the visitors to get involved in. 'Cakes v Pies' is a baking competition open to anyone. There are junior and adult sections, with a panel of 3 independent judges assessing the entries and deciding the winners. Invitations to take part will go out to all the schools in the area, as well as advertising in Spotlight Magazine and hundreds of posters too. There is a small entry charge which goes directly to the charity Mary's Meals. "This is a real opportunity to make a difference for children in less fortunate parts of the world - just £10.70 will buy one meal a day for a child for an entire year." Entries must be registered before the day, with the deadline for registration on March 20th. Junior entry is £2, Adult entry is £4 with prizes given for first, second and third place. Details on registration is available from Olive Tree Chocolate either by email to shop@olivetreechocolate.co.uk, or by calling 01343 547700 between 9.30pm and 5pm.
