I was challenged about the value of education the other day and came across a couple of interesting quotes: “It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows.” - Epictetus “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” - Aristotle “Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance.” - Will Durant
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” Mark Twain

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings In January 2009, a new electronic payment system was launched on the internet by a programmer going by the name Satoshi Nakamoto, unnoticed by all but a small group of enthusiasts. It was called Bitcoin, and was virtually worthless. In one of the early transactions, 10,000 Bitcoins were traded for two pizzas. Two years later, the value of each ‘coin’ had reached 25 cents, but by that time the cryptocurrency had begun to attract the interest of the wider world, and speculators started to move into the market. By June 2011, the price briefly reached almost $30, giving those who had bought in six months earlier a 120-fold return. However, it then crashed back to barely $2 over the following months. Bitcoin has had a rollercoaster ride ever since, eventually peaking at over $19,000 in December last year. Those who made a modest
purchase seven years earlier had become multi-millionaire The price of Bitcoin is now on the way back down, and many are making losses instead of profits. Who knows what the coming year will bring? It is notoriously difficult to predict the future, even regarding much more easily understandable assets than cryptocurrencies. In 2012, in an investing competition run by the Observer newspaper, a team of stock market professionals was beaten hands down by a cat called Orlando, which made its share selections by throwing a toy mouse onto a grid. Life is full of uncertainty, and if you are inclined to worry, there is plenty to worry about, from redundancy to nuclear conflict. However, for the Christian the outlook is rather different. Although we face the same uncertainties as the rest of humanity, we believe that there are also some things which can

be relied upon. Jesus said: “‘Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24-25). Jesus’ message is that the storms of life impact everyone alike, but that we can choose to anchor ourselves to something which is totally stable even in the midst of the deluge - faith in Him. My life has been hit by its share of storms, but I’ve found certainty and security in the midst of them just as Jesus promised.

As we head towards Easter it’s always a busy time for schools and churches and I will hopefully get the chance to see some of you at the odd daffodil tea or Easter coffee morning being held around Moray which is also a great opportunity to sample some home baking! There is little time for tea and biscuits in the House of Commons just now, although like a coffee morning, there is always plenty to talk about, and recent weeks have been extremely busy with various debates and meetings of the Home Affairs committee which I am a member of. This committee is looking at a range of issues but we recently visited the National Crime Agency which is the lead agency for tackling serious and organised crime and the visit was a real eyeopener in terms of some of the investigations that are ongoing and the joint working with agencies all across the country. On a lighter note, as a strong supporter for the Scotch Whisky distilled in Moray, I have accepted the challenge of visiting all the distilleries in the area. Watch out for the photos as I will be continuing to promote our iconic national drink!
Douglas Ross MP
One of the best parts of my role as the MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey is getting the chance to see first hand how talented, passionate and caring our young people are. At the end of last year a number of pupils from Holm Primary School in Inverness wrote to me to share their concerns on the plight of child refugees and suggested changes they would like to see to the law to help these children. I was delighted to be able to visit these pupils at the start of this year and hear more about their thoughts on this issue and answer questions about being an MP. It really was both touching and inspiring to see how engaged they were and how deeply they cared about other children who are less fortunate than them. Their passion and enthusiasm for changing things for the better both here and further away really shows they are great ambassadors for their school and our community.

Words by the Wayside “Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not your arrogancy come out of your mouth.” (1st Samuel 2:3)
Reader, what have you done with Jesus which is called Christ? Do you say, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing? And yet do you not know if you reject the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, you are wretched, and miserable and poor and blind and naked. It is appointed unto you once to die and after this your judgment: what will you do with Jesus? munro masonry may 17.qxp Registered Scottish10/04/2017 charity SC041290 09:46 Page 1

Barry
Woodward Inspirational Evangelist Free Entry “An amazing true life personal story told in a frank but amusing style” Barry Woodward grew up in Greater Manchester, England. At the age of 16 he left school without any qualifications and was drawn into the drug scene, experimenting with cannabis, amphetamines and LSD. This led to a heroin addiction and life as a drugs supplier. For twelve years he was totally dependent on drugs, during which time he spent a number of terms in prison. Miraculously, his life turned around completely following an amazing sequence of supernatural encounters. Following his rehabilitation Barry has been a banker, had a job in a marketing consultancy, and then a technology company, and then for seven years was the Senior Pastor of the Cambridge Vineyard Church in England and currently spends much of his time visiting prisons to relate his story and pass on his experiences. Barry will talk about his personal encounter with Jesus Christ and offer a message of hope for all. Even if we think our own circumstances have not been as challenging as his, the message is definitely one to be heard by all of us who can admit to finding life a struggle sometimes.

Local Artist
...takes part in TV show
Forres artist Jonathan Luxon will be taking part in the current series of “Portrait Artist of the Year 2018” aired on Tuesdays at 8.00pm, (Sky Arts channel) Jonathan’s heat is scheduled for Tuesday 6th March at 8pm. For those who don’t subscribe to the Sky Arts channel, the show can also be viewed at nowtv.com or with most internet TV boxes.
“My main inspiration has always been the human figure. A friend suggested entering this event. I didn’t take it too seriously at first but he kept mentioning it so I painted a self portrait and submitted it. I was pretty shocked when they phoned back to say I’d been selected. The biggest challenge was how to do a portrait in 4 hours as it usually takes me about 40. I spent a month prior to my heat working on my speed. The filming day was a frantic, hair raising experience, but terrific fun. I learned a lot from taking part. It has really helped develop my painting and I am planning to enter again for next year”. Jonathan studied Fine art in Canterbury from 1993-1996 where he specialised in figurative drawing and painting. He has lived in Moray since 2003 where he has worked as a self- employed portrait artist since 2009. As well as portraiture he has recently been focusing on painting the local landscapes, particularly the Findhorn Bay area.

When the blade loses its’ sharpness, it doesn’t make a clean cut through the grass sward. There are some obvious signs that this might be a problem. It may seem to struggle to give a decent cut at all; there may be issues with clumping and leaving material on the lawn, particularly when the grass has some wet in it (much of the time in our climate). Less understood perhaps is that a blunt blade will often end up tearing the grass leaf, rather than providing a clean cut. If you examine a few blades of grass, you will be able to see either a straight clean cut at the top, or a rather ragged, torn top. The result of a poor cut is bruising to the grass leaf, which causes the tip to turn brown, as it has been damaged. The overall effect can be to leave the grass with poor colour. Instead of an even, healthy green, it has a tinge of brown throughout. A ragged cut to the material of Alastair Watt

(1st Samuel 2:17)
Reader, God so loved you, that He offered up on Calvary’s Cross His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, that if you would believe on Him, you should not perish. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn you, but that you through Him might be saved. Refuse no longer God’s offering for your sins. Jesus Christ can make you whole, He is The Gift of God.

Sunsupp opened on 10th of February 2017 (just over a year ago) and is owned by Serlina and Katie. They run a tanning Salon which has both stand up and lying down booths available. As part of the Sunbed Association they promote safe tanning, so you know you are in very good hands. Sunsupp don't just do sunbeds, they also offer spray tans which I decided to try and I have to say it was probably the best spray tan I have had. For the first time there was no blotching or streaking, the tan was just perfect, the colour amazing and in the middle of Janaury I had a tan and was just glowing. Sammi is the spray tan expert and really knows what she is doing. I was offered wipes to revmove make up and she went through every position I needed to stand in so that my whole body would be covered by the spray, checking afterwards to see if there were any areas of my body that I would like respraying just to ensure the coverage was perfect.
Sunsupp also have proteins, sports supplements and a range of tan accelerators. If you require any sports supplements they can order them in within 24 hours and if you live in Moray, they have same day delivery. Their website www.sunsupp.co.uk has all the products available. If anybody is looking to use sunbeds, get a spray tan or to buy supplements, I would recommend Sunsupp with its easy parking and friendly, helpful staff. This was a great place to go for a spray tan and I will certainly be going back.

In between wintry weeks, we are getting some definite glimpses of spring with its longer days, emerging bulbs and buds on trees. The growing season is definitely not too far away. Before we know it, the air will hum with the sound of lawnmowers and strimmers being started up for the first time. For now, however, although it still feels as if we are in the icy grip of winter some days, the month of March sees the first of the new growing season’s tasks needing to get done. Let’s go!
DO cut back Cornus sanguinea and Cornus alba. Don’t be shy about it either, you can cut them down hard (to 6-12”) to encourage beautiful winter stems next year. DO plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Alliums and Oriental Lilies. DO lightly hose your beds to disturb any emerging weeds. DO prune Buddleja davidii, again these should be taken down hard. DO prune your bush Roses, and remember the maxim that you should always ‘get your worst enemy to prune your Roses’…..that is to say, you can prune these guys hard too! DO divide any herbaceous perennials and give the clumps away or plant them somewhere else in your garden. You can do this in Autumn too.
28
DON’T work your beds or walk in them a lot if they are wet, you’ll compact the soil (and also create stubborn muddy footprints on your lawn!) DON’T forget to make sure your ponds are clear of debris, and consider putting pond heaters away once temperatures are high enough. DON’T forget to order your seed potatoes, as they need a chance to ‘chit’ on your windowsill before being planted out. DON’T forget to cut back any growth you’ve left on herbaceous perennials over the winter, including any old seed-heads. Remember to keep the birds fed too, and ensure all your machinery and tools are serviced and have sharp blades. I love this time of year, I’m just itching to get started on some serious graft in the garden! I’ve some interesting garden designs on the go at the moment too, and am looking forward to some more exciting projects this year!
