PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS HE CAN CHANGE YOU! Christians always say that their God CHANGES lives. That is a very important statement. But can it really be true? Because, if it is true, then it is one of the most important evidences of the certainty of what Christians teach. Five years before the start of the second Sino-Japanese War (which meshed into the WWII), an uneducated former London “parlour maid”, travelled alone, by train across Siberia, so that she could begin telling the Chinese people about Jesus Christ. It was a perilous time in China, but the miniscule lady accomplished an amazing work of love among the Chinese people. Her name was Gladys Aylward. She told a story of one time in China when a brash, guerilla general imprisoned her in her own home. He accused her of being a spy who had found out secret information about his personal life. The raucous general demanded that she tell him exactly who had given her this information. Gladys replied that she had no private source. The general continued to rave and curse and demand to know how she knew so much detail about him. “You must have an informer,” he said, “because, in one of your talks, I heard you say that all men are sinners. You do know private things about
me!” Gladys replied that it was the Bible that said: “For ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) “Will you kneel down with me and confess to God that you have sinned and take Jesus Christ as your Saviour today?” she pleaded. After two hours of further intense struggle, the proud Chinese general knelt and humbly confessed his sins and received Jesus Christ as his Saviour and Lord. The general got up from his knees and burst out, “If I have taken this God, then I must tell my soldiers!” The next day, the general addressed his army. He warned them that they had always been terrorists profiteering from the war. Then he said that he could no longer be a bandit, because he had taken Jesus Christ as his God. And he challenged them to be willing to join him and turn to this true God. Many months later, a dirty, ragged, beggar hobbled into that same compound and sat down. That evening his amazing story unfolded: Believe it or not, he was the general who put his trust in Jesus. On the day when he had bravely confessed his faith before his troops, they had turned on him, and ripped off his uniform, tied him on a mule, and carried him off during the night. For many months, they continued as

bandits, burning, looting, and rioting. They dragged their former general with them everywhere, fearful that he would expose them to the government if they let him go. In every possible way, they tried to break his faith. He was tortured, starved, kicked, and beaten. He was a broken man. After nine months of this terrible treatment, one of his former captains helped him escape. Six months after his escape, he stumbled back to the compound of Gladys Aylward. His faith that began on that one night of struggle, had completely CHANGED him and given him the strength to survive months of torture for the sake of his new Saviour. Total CHANGE is possible through Jesus Christ. No case is too difficult for Him. Another great missionary of the past named Paul, said it so well in 1 Timothy 1:15, “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” If Christ can CHANGE Gladys Aylward, the General, and Paul . . . HE CAN CHANGE YOU!

More people in the Highlands make their living through tourism than any other sector. So, the news that last year the number of visitors - and spending per visitor - to Scotland has risen, is welcome. Key to further success is improving transport links so it is easier - and less expensive - for people to get here. Planned improvements to rail inks to Perth and Aberdeen and dualling of the A9 and A96 will help. But we also need more people to come here by air, and build on the excellent work at Inverness Airport in developing more routes and connections. To achieve that, our planned reduction in Air Passenger Duty is essential: to reduce the tax on travel to a fairer level. Fergus Ewing MSP

Here in the Highlands & Islands we are still paying excessive delivery charges. This has to change and I am committed to working with all interested parties to address this. This is, after all, an issue that transcends party politics and I commend all the actions that have been taken to date to tackle the issue, especially the work done by Citizens Advice Scotland and the Scottish Government on the Statement of Principles but also the work of other politicians and community action groups. That said, we should not want to be standing here in a couple of years saying the same thing about the inequity of service – we should all want to ensure people living here and businesses operating in the Highlands are not disadvantaged because of legislative loopholes or lack of enforcement. That is precisely why I have launched a campaign for a “Peoples Delivery Guarantee” which aims to tackle these issues head on.
