wishing to tempt The Editor Without fate, it does appear that Summer has indeed arrived. Flowers bloom, blossom buds, vegetables spring forth. New life abounds and, with it - new hope. We live in hope; that people will understand responsibility and not just rights; that people will express restraint and not just outrage; that people will choose to give others the benefit of the doubt rather than to jump to conclusions; that we will focus on wisdom and not just intelligence and that we will turn to joy rather than just happiness. And when we can’t find the strength to do these things let us have friends that encourage us to anyway.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed! (John 20:29) “Seeing is believing,” the saying goes! A little scepticism can be healthy but equally doubts and temptations can paralyse us and cause us to forfeit lasting joy. In the 19thC the Actress Frances Kemble wrote: “Better to trust all and be deceived, and weep that trust and that deceiving, than doubt one heart that if believed, had blessed one’s life with true believing.” In John 20:30 it is written “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” Believe in Jesus and your life will be blessed with true believing! To find the source of doubt and temptation we must go right back to the beginning of creation (Genesis Chapter 2) when God made Adam (Genesis 2:78, 15-17) and Eve (Genesis 2:18-23.) The Garden of Eden was beautiful and Adam and Eve wanted for nothing, their

lives were bliss. They could eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, except one the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (v.16-17.) Then appears the serpent, the craftiest of the wild animals God had made, representing Satan or the enemy of God, (Genesis Chapter 3.) sowing seeds of doubt and temptation. “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” Actually they were barred from eating only the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, or they would die. The serpent next suggests that God was untruthful and he just did not want Adam and Eve to realise they could be as powerful as Him – which of course was a lie. (Genesis 3:2-3.) How quickly the minds of Adam and Eve were corrupted. Suddenly they seem to have forgotten all the amazing good things that they had, and began to long for the one thing they may not have - equality with God! How often do we take for granted all the joys and genuine goodness of life and strive for something which looks better but is actually an illusion?

There are many examples of those who encountered the imposters of doubt and temptation in the Bible, but let us come now to the resurrection appearance of Jesus to his disciples (John chapter 20.) The first time the Lord appears Thomas was absent but the other disciples told him they had seen the Lord (John 20:25.) Thomas replied “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.” One week later Jesus appeared again and doubting Thomas immediately made his confession “My Lord and my God!” (v.28). Thomas believed because he saw. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (v.29) We can know Jesus, the Son of God, in prayer, in reading the Bible, in song and in gracious acts of service. Dare to believe in Him and his teaching and your life will be blessed with true believing! Rev. Bob Anderson Knockando, Elchies & Archiestown linked with Rothes

THE The Burning Hell, Thurs 19th May

Once again The Drouthy Cobbler is heavily involved in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival both as a venue and as the festival information point in Elgin. A highlight of the weekend will undoubtedly be the seven course tasting dinner with whisky paired and introduced by whisky legend Charles MacLean. Saturday the 30th of April will see the staging of “Donald Robertson is not a stand up comedian” which grew out of the National Theatre of Scotland's Auteurs project. This theatre piece is a darkly comic coming of age story that explores the need to belong and deconstructs the brutal role that humour can play in society. ‘As a blend of jokes and theatre, it works beautifully, and McNair delivers real insight along with the laughs. A gem of a show.’ The Telegraph There is music with Sunday lunchtime Jazz and on Thursday 28th April a hotly anticipated return visit from McKerron, Brechin, and Ó hEadhra. We also have two cocktail sessions with the author Ruth Ball and a tutored tasting of Gordon & Macphail's Connoisseurs Choice range.

Glenn Wool Comedian, Thurs 5th May

Closing our programme of events on Sunday the 1st of May is a whisky themed pub quiz. Many of our events are already fully sold out but please check our web site – www.drouthycobbler.co.uk – to see what is still available. Throughout May we have loads of live entertainment including Blue Rose Code Trio, Canadian comedian Glenn Wool, trad superstars Session A9 as well as theatre and our monthly comedy club. See the advert for our full event listings. Our beer garden has just undergone a complete refurbishment and opens in time for the whisky festival, and we hope the start of summer. Weather permitting we will soon be enjoying al fresco dining - taking full advantage of our famous micro-climate... Saturday evening dining in the upstairs venue has proven extremely popular. To guarantee a great evening we encourage you to book tables in our intimate first floor pop-up restaurant, online or by calling 01343 596000. Informal dining in the ground floor bar continues to be on a first come, first served basis.

PARLIAMENT BLOG It was back in the summer of 2014, that I first raised the idea of a £300m City Deal for Inverness. It has been quite a journey since then. I recall thinking, if Glasgow can get a deal then why not us? Surely, Europe's fastest growing city should too, have transformational investment that allows us to plan for growth, not just react as has been the case in the past. The deal is made up of £135M from the Scottish Government, £127M of Highland Council capital funding and £53m from the UK Government. This investment will ensure that Inverness and region benefit from improved infrastructure, connectivity, jobs and housing. It will also be fantastic to see our ambition for Inverness Castle realised. There are many projects that divide opinion but seeing the castle open for business will, I know, please many of the people who live and work in Inverness and across the wider region. Drew Hendry MP

Finally! It's finished! Not my political campaigning, but the bookshelves I've been building over the last few weeks! There's been some trial and error and some mildly frustrated grumbling on occasions but to have them up and holding books and even, if I do say so myself, looking pretty good is really satisfying. DIY in the house has usually been something that has been a necessity but on this occasion it was more of a planned project and something I found quite relaxing and completely different from day-to-day work. It's not everyone's cup of tea but I'd recommend giving it a go. While that has been going the puppy has grown quite substantially in the last few months and she's now at the stage of persistently chewing her sister's ears. The older one seems to have the patience for the puppy though and walking them both around Moray is a great way to see the countryside. Angus Robertson MP
