Civil Rights is in the news at the moment and is something close to my heart. I have never quite understood why the colour of one’s skin or the country of one’s birth should dictate how one is treated.
Words by the Wayside “...for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.”
Here is a poem by Langston Hughes, US Civil Rights activist (1902-1967) a contemporary of Martin Luther King.
Dreams Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow.

Reader, in the sight of others your life might seem good and upright, but how do you stand before God? It is impossible to flee from Him who is everywhere, or from the all-searching of His eyes. Reader, all have sinned, and all need The Saviour, The Lord Jesus Christ, neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Are you saved?

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Spring is here! Our minds may be turning to thoughts of improving our well-being and taking better care of ourselves. Perhaps during the long dark winter nights we succumbed to over-indulging ourselves in comfort food which has not been good for the waistline; or on cold mornings opting to use the car rather than walk and we are not as fit as we were. Now, we decide, is the time to take ourselves in hand and sort ourselves out. We must make a determined effort to get our lives, mind and body, back under control. Out must go the junk food high in sugar, salt and fat. In must come proper calorie control, healthy ingredients, the right amount of vitamins and nutrients. It is time to choose the healthy option and stop living to eat and start eating to live. There is plenty of advice on how to go about it with numerous advertisements lauding their solutions and remedies. In similar vein we may resolve that we have got to improve our stamina and fitness again. We will feel much better once we engage in more physical activity such as jogging or sport or getting back to the gym on a regular
basis. Whether it is healthy eating or invigorating exercise there is a massive industry out there assuring us that they can help if we buy their products or join their fitness programme. Mindfulness is another technique that can help improve our wellbeing. It has its origins in Buddhism and involves understanding our thoughts and taking control of them. All or any of these things can certainly be beneficial for us in proper proportion, but so can the Bible. Have you ever thought about that? Many of the health improving choices we make are directed inwards to ourselves, whereas we might benefit more by being less introspective and instead looking away from ourselves to others. In Paul’s Letter to the Romans in the 12th Chapter he wrote: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God (v.1.) Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind (v. 2.) Paul goes on to urge people to practice outgoing love in

action. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves….be joyful in hope, patient in affliction; faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality (vs. 9-13.) Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited (v. 16.) If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live in peace with everyone (v. 18.) Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (v. 21.) It will take practice and commitment to live a life like that, but remember this is the counsel of the man who persecuted Christians before he met Christ the Lord who dramatically transformed his life – the same Lord who can transform our lives when we walk in his way. We could try it! Rev Bob Anderson Knockando, Elchies & Archiestown linked with Rothes.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times Concerns about NHS Grampian continue to feature heavily in my postbag and the recent news that the children’s ward in Elgin was once again going to close to overnight admissions was a further blow to the local area. We are trying to attract people to Moray as a shortage of medical staff is one of the reasons for the situation in the children’s ward, but Moray will seem a less attractive option if these important services are reduced or lost altogether. As well as the children’s ward, we have excessive waits for the eye clinic, chronic pain waiting times are unacceptable and a number of cases I have raised on behalf of local people have been responded to by both NHS Grampian and Scottish Government Ministers confirming the treatment delivered was unacceptable and fell below the standards we should expect. Given the growing concern locally about a variety of NHS issues I have asked NHS Grampian to join me at a public meeting in Moray to explain the current situation and their future plans. Local people deserve to hear directly from NHS managers about what they plan to do to ensure we all get appropriate health care in the local area. I will advertise details of the meeting in the local media when NHS Grampian confirm who will be attending.
We have reached that time of the year again when people from all around the world visit Scotland to experience our Highland Games. We are very fortunate to have so many Games on our doorstep with the Gordon Castle Highland Games, at Fochabers, being the first of the season on 20th May. In recent years our Highland Games have been very successful in attracting more and more tourists, a trend we should all celebrate. However, if you would like to avoid the big crowds I would encourage you to visit some of the smaller and community-run Highland Games. One of my favourites happens to be the Strathconon Games, held on 28th July. It has a warm family feel and where all the profits from the Games go towards the upkeep of the Village Hall. Visiting hidden gems like the Strathconon Games is also a great way to support local communities.

It is not long now until Summer Recess, and over the summer months I am greatly looking forward to getting out and about it across the constituency and attending the many community events. It is at this time of year all the hard work of the folk behind the scenes in our communities pays off with these fantastic events – the organisers really do the Highlands proud and often go unnoticed. It is also great to be reminded of how much our area has to offer for both locals and visitors alike. Our area offers everything from Britain’s first and only polar bear cub at the excellent Highland Wildlfie Park to the cutting edge “augmented reality” app that lets visitors learn about Inverness from the palm of their hands. For shopping, our town centres offer the best of independent retail and our booming food and drink sector means there is also plenty of top quality food and drink to enjoy along the way. I hope like me you will spend the summer seeing the best our area has to offer.

Create and store your own solar energy The Tesla Energy Powerwall 2 stores up to 13.5 kWh of excess solar energy during daylight hours when your home electricity usage is low, then discharges in the evening during those high usage/peak times saving you money. The Powerwall can be installed with new Solar PV systems or can be retrofitted to existing PV systems. A home battery system protects homeowners from future electricity price increases and reduce reliance on the national grid.
About AES Solar Established in 1979, AES Solar are the oldest solar company in Western Europe and have completed solar thermal and PV installations all over the world. We proudly manufacture our range of solar thermal panels in Forres and our aim is to make Scotland the solar capital of the world.

inter has taken its time to leave this year but by May we are approaching the time of year when there is a massive growth spurt put on by our garden plants and lawns. This period of rapid growth only actually lasts six to eight weeks, and normally kicks in some time between the start of May and mid-June. Don’t expect to make huge amounts of progress in your garden during this time, and there are a few techniques that will help you keep on top of the garden during this part of the year.
Grass cutting is the other labour-intensive job that needs doing in the garden, but again you can have a pragmatic approach towards this. Once grass is growing rapidly, if you want a pristine lawn you could be mowing as regularly as twice per week. However, the golden rule is not to leave it any longer than once every two weeks. During the period of vigorous growth this will mean that your grass gets a little long between cuts, but the key is to stop weeds in the lawn setting seed. If you do let weeds flower and seed, your lawn will deteriorate more quickly as the more aggressive weeds gradually out-compete the grass plants. If you have time, weekly cuts are a happy compromise. Hedge cutting can be timed to get the best results from your efforts. Hedges such as Ligustrum spp. (Privet) and Buxus sempervirens (Box) should receive the first of their three cuts some time in May, but be guided by how much growth there has been – does it look messy or not? If you are yet to plant a hedge, consider the fact that the likes of Fagus sylvatica (Beech), Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) and Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn) only need one cut per year, in late summer. Remember, when trimming hedges always make sure you check for birds’ nests first.
IF YOU WANT TO KEEP UP-TO-DATE WITH TIPS AND ADVICE Weeding is something a lot of people do not enjoy, but it need not be backbreaking work. The tools for the job here are a hoe, a stone rake and ideally a hand-fork. You do not need to physically remove every weed that you come across, and whilst ideally you will be able to uproot weeds with their roots and all, it does not matter if you cannot do this. The trick is regular weeding, as if you keep on cutting weeds in half and turning them into the soil, they do not get a chance to take hold. There are of course more stubborn weeds such as Aegopodium podagraria (Ground Elder/Bishopsweed) and Elymus repens (Couch Grass), but regular hoeing and turning will weaken even these imposters. Weeds over about 3cm in height I do remove, and once you have weeded a section of bed, take the stone rake to it to further disturb the soil surface and neaten the appearance.
TILL NEXT MONTH THEN,
HAPPY MOUNTAIN GARDENING!
