The Editor

I was interested to hear something recently on the TV programme QI, hosted by Stephen Fry. He said that 60% of all the facts used in series 1 have subsequently been proven wrong. A sobering thought and makes me wonder why we are often so convinced of our own correctness when we can’t even rely on “known” facts. I shall try hard not to insist on me being right all the time in future!!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS God’s world is not partial or selective I suspect the most challenging, yet rewarding time in my ministry was spent on Merseyside in the 1980’s living and working in an area of massive deprivation. The unemployed significantly outnumbered the employed. I learnt very quickly that unemployment wasn’t just about ‘no job’ or even ‘limited finance’ but in a lot of cases about a destruction of hope and purpose. Sadly a lot of ‘advice’ was offered from outside with little experience of knowing what it was like to live within. I also learned that the role of church ministers was not simply to look after their flock and keep them happy! It was to facilitate the Christian community in reaching out and standing where folk were in the challenges of life and to share the hope that is found in the Gospel. It was not to be the ‘manager’ of a congregation but was to be a person of the community. In subsequent years I learned that the problems and challenges of inner urban life were to be found in most communities. Indeed, rural poverty was an issue that often received much less attention than its urban neighbour. The riots of the 1980’s brought a major

examination of inner urban society in the form of a report Faith in the City. Of its recommendations, 38 were addressed to the church in putting its own house in order and 23 to government and nation. Well for some it caused another riot - a riot of outrage. The prospect of the church commenting on what were perceived to be ‘non churchy matters’ was outrageous. Sadly, in practice, it revealed how little some understood about the Christian Faith. In the beginning God... Genesis 1 - our Faith begins with the news that God created - and it was good. Sadly it goes on to tell how humanity ‘mucked up’. The pictures given are not of a God whose concern was limited to the churchy but whose concern was for ALL and for EVERYTHING. There are no exclusion zones for God. A good home life, good housing, good health care, a good environment, good education, a world free of poverty and injustice, to name but a few, are VERY MUCH within God’s concern. Sadly over the years there have been plenty who have tried to instruct Christians to ‘stick to church and keep out of worldly things’; indeed, some church communities have rather colluded with this as it can be much more attractive to stay safe in the

church than to reach out. Inconveniently the Gospel is there for all. We’re all precious in God’s eyes. One of my greatest privileges has been holding a baby about to be baptised in my arms. One gazes with awe at the seedbed of potential in this tiny, wriggling being. The potential is there. The seeds are sown. How much of that is realised will depend upon the sort of world in which the child is reared. As Election Day, approaches, maybe there is something to be said for focussing less on who offers me the best package and instead on how best we can create a world which honours the potential of that child. God’s world is not partial or selective. His concern is for all, not just me and mine. It’s not accidental that the Parable of the Good Samaritan ends with the incisive command ’Go and do the same yourself’ Luke 10:37 !!

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological condition which affects around 100,000 people in the UK. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40, but it can affect younger and older people too. Almost three times as many women have MS as men. As the MS Society passed its 60 year of offering support and advice to people living with Multiple Sclerosis, the Moray Branch of the MS Society has spent the past three years giving and sharing. Since our re-incarnation, the branch has been able to offer small grants and a second year of taster sessions in complementary therapies to people living with MS. The local branch consists of a small group of people who have an interest in MS and meet together once a month to look at offering funding complimentary therapy taster sessions, a maximum of four sessions and small grants for people or families living with MS. The branch has a service agreement with Citizens Advice Bureau to support people with the transition between Disability Living Allowance and PIP – Personal Independence Payment and form filling.

We would be delighted to have a few more volunteers join us at our monthly meetings. It is not a time consuming commitment, the main goal of the committee is to share the finances held by the branch, to raise awareness and to have a good laugh at the same time. If you would like more information, either email or text us on: moray@mssociety.org.uk or leave a message on the branch mobile on 07917 218725. If you are able to offer a little time or would like to be part of the committee, we would love to have you join us, contact us on the above email address or leave a message on the mobile phone. You can also find us on: www.facebook.com/MSSocietyMoray it is a job in progress but join us and share your stories.
