Life Through a Lens by Nicky Mack, Lossiemouth “The Autumn mourns her rip'ning corn By early Winter's ravage torn; Across her placid, azure sky, She sees the scowling tempest fly;…”

Burns, R.

The Sky’s the Limit One of my very favourite quotes during my time here in Lossiemouth relates to the weather and its ever changing nature … “just wait a minute and it’ll change”. Autumn skies here on the Moray Firth are particularly beautiful in my experience. Sky and cloud photography is one of my most pleasurable pastimes firstly because there are never two sunsets the same and it does change, very quickly and gives you a fresh canvass to capture. Photographing skies during daylight is relatively simple because you have the light available to you. Remember the definition of photography is drawing with light. Photographing at dusk is very different. You don’t have as much light available to you. You can be anywhere to see and capture the perfect sunset. Now is the time of year to keep your eyes peeled. One tip I’ve learnt for capturing sunset and sky shots is always look behind you. You can look ahead trying to find your shot but don’t forget what’s going on elsewhere.

as a point of reference or if you live closer into town, you can use silhouettes of buildings to give your shot a point of focus. If you don’t feel you are experienced enough with your camera yet to set it up for this specific type of shot, most digitals will have a Sunset setting or the like. This will automatically set light levels, depth of field etc. What is important to remember for dusk time/sunset photography is capturing the level of light available to you. One blink and the shot is lost. Therefore, you need to set your shutter speed higher. This will in turn capture the movement of the sky inhabitants against the light available to you by sucking in the light to the shot. There is a term in photography called ‘noise’. This is prevalent in dark or low light photography. This is when your shot has fuzziness which may distort your shot. This can be overcome by adjusting settings. Get comfortable with your camera. Know both of your capabilities so far and snap, snap and snap some more. You will find your own way. Before long you’ll be shifting and twiddling and clicking without thinking about it. You can achieve some wonderful photographs through watching the sky. No painting can compare to the wonderful dramatic presence the clouds can offer in real time but a well shot photograph can come close. The camera is not as clever as the human eye. We are very fortunate to have this gift. But get intimate with your camera and keep at it and you’ll surprise yourself how close to a perfect capture you’ll come.

From my own personal experience try not to take your dusk sunset shot when it’s too windy. It will cause reverberation through the camera causing movement and thus blur. All modern digitals have a function where you can adjust the effects of wind but it’s not always brilliant. I love the natural warmth and depth of a good Moray sunset. There are many layers of cloud, air and light which all contribute to your composition. You may live on the coast where you’ll have the sea and mountains

My own work can be found at www.vianne.co.uk, any comments would be greatly appreciated. My inspiration is merely what surrounds me, you can share that too.

PASTORAL LETTER AND CHURCH MEETINGS The Bible is rich with wonderful stories. One of the most popular stories from the Old Testament is that of young David taking on and beating the giant Philistine Goliath. It is a tale that has been used to encourage the underdog. It is a tale that encourages us to take on challenges that might seem beyond us – because well, if wee David can do it so can we! But you see this is where we have the story all wrong – because, I would argue, David was never the underdog. Apologies if that made you choke on your toast but, you see, how could David be the underdog when he had God on his side? Let’s go back to the beginning of the story. David has been helping out by taking supplies to the battle frontline. His brothers are there. King Saul is looking for someone to take on Goliath, who has made a direct challenge. Step forward David. Saul dresses David up in his armour and gives him his sword. But they

weigh David down so much he can hardly move. So David takes off his garb and heads off, having first picked up his shepherd’s crook and sling and selected 5 smooth stones as ammunition. He is all set to take on the giant, Goliath. Taunted by Goliath David retorts, “You are coming against me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the Israelite armies” (1 Samuel 17:45). And with that, he fires a stone from his sling and Goliath is beaten. Davis wins because he has God on his side. When David went to meet Goliath he was armed with five stones. Over the summer we have in our church been thinking about these stones. We have been considering as we have followed David’s story how they represent God involvement in our lives. One way we have done this is to consider what they might represent. A wonderful suggestion I came across was that the first stone

represents God’s love for us, the second that he knows us, the third that he treasures us, the fourth that he forgives us and the fifth that he is always with us. Is that not a wonderful way to look at this story in a new way – David is no underdog– how, armed with these stones, could David fail to beat Goliath? And if we pick up these 5 stones how can we fail to meet life’s challenges? We might not always win or get what we want but we will be strengthened by remembering that God is there with us. So remember and cherish your five stones: God loves you, God knows you, God treasures you, God forgives and God is always with you. May God’s blessing be with you.

outdoor

A few months ago I was sitting at my desk in the room at the front of the house I use as an office, when my concentration was broken by a barely audible little song. I looked around the room, there was a Robin sitting on the back of a chair a metre away. The song was repeated and I was looked at very directly. I opened the window but the robin refused to move, let alone fly out. As I went out of my office across the hall into the sitting room, the Robin followed, cocked its head on one side and repeated the song, this time sitting on the television. I knew what the Robin wanted. To get to my office you come in the back door, through the kitchen, along the front hall and turn left. This is a route the Robin knows well and uses when the back door is open and I need “training”. Like many people, we have bird feeders in the garden and during the late Spring and early Summer they seem to be the main source of food for the local breeding House sparrows who consume nearly a kilo of food a day. Last Winter we started to feed mealworms, the Black birds and Robins really seemed to appreciate this. A couple of Robins started to watch for signs of us coming out of the house. They would make it very clear that they wanted more meal worms, and as time went on they became quite happy to eat these from the hand.

All photograps are Copyright Mike Rae

This Spring two pairs of Robins nested in the garden and our “training” was stepped up a gear, I guess by the male birds who were feeding their mates sitting on eggs. If there were no meal worms out the Robins would look directly through the window into the house, and continue to watch us until we put out more mealworms. Back in May we spent a couple of weeks in the Cairngorms, and while we were away our neighbour checked the garden and filled the bird feeders. On returning I noticed a small pile of bird droppings on the door step. I thought this was a little odd until I surmised that a Robin had spent a lot of time sitting on the back door handle waiting for someone to come out and feed him. Over the past months the demand from the Robins has reduced, the young have left the hedge and I assume they are looking after themselves. However, the male birds seem to be feeding the females again, perhaps they have laid more eggs. I am looking forward to my work being interrupted again in a couple of weeks and for my “training” to be resumed. In the meantime, the local starlings have discovered the mealworms and the Blackbirds nesting in the clematis on top of our oil tank are feeding them to their young. No chance of stopping our regular mealworm order! Briefly, and on more serious note, wild birds eat all year round and feeding them in the Winter can really help them through difficult cold spells.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWS ExtractS FrOm thE minutES OF thE mEEting OF 19th JunE 2012 OF grantOwn-On-SpEy and Vicinity cOmmunity cOunciL 3. Matters Arising a) Strathspey Railway Basil Dunlop via email informed the meeting that the event held on 25th May for invited politicians etc. was beneficial regarding publicity, though somewhat disappointing regarding attendance. The resultant photos in the Press, with 3 engines in steam and 12 footplate and locomotive maintenance volunteers and staff posing on them, showed that the SRC is now big business, as it did not include the many other people engaged in other essential tasks on the railway. b) Flower Baskets Basil Dunlop via email told the meeting that the baskets are expected any time now, and the watering pump has been checked and is working well. Highland Council have planted up tubs. Volunteers are still required, especially those with vehicles with tow bars. c) Grant Park Lochan Basil Dunlop via email said that Anagach Woods Trust are to arrange a meeting with Seafield Strathspey Estates to discuss the weed problem, possible allotments, and vehicle access. d) Old Speybridge On going. e) Grant House Renovation Cllr Douglas reported that the 2nd phase would be complete in early October and indicated that an invitation would be extended to the Community Council to visit after the renovations were complete. f) Town Signs On going. Other issues: • PA System – On going. • Picnic in the Square – J Beveridge told the meeting that the event had been very successful. C Sinclair extended a vote of thanks to the committee who had organized the afternoon. There was a discussion regarding the requirement for multi-directional microphones for groups performing. L McCracken is to approach the Grammar

School to see if they would approach the Community Council to purchase these, as it would be more beneficial for the school to have the microphones. E Sutton is to price the equipment and Cllr Douglas stated that there could potentially be match funding from the Ward discretionary budget. • Olympic Torch – J Beveridge indicated that this had also been a great success; he thanked C Sinclair for his MC duties. There was disappointment that the Highland Council coverage had ended at Carrbridge. • Ian Charles Hospital – Cllr Douglas stated that a focus group was being set up and that a site visit to Migdale was to be arranged with representatives from all affected Community Councils. J Beveridge said that under the proposed new arrangements consultants would attend at the community hospital. D Scobbie indicated that the Highland Senior Citizen Network felt that the centralized model would not be as beneficial to the various communities as having smaller, local units. • Dulaig Pitch – The benches are still outstanding, Cllr Douglas to pursue this. • Service Point Hours – On going. Tom nan Clach wind farm - Fiona Milligan, Project Manager at Infinergy attended the meeting to outline the Community Benefit scheme attached to the Tom nan Clach wind farm. She explained that if the scheme goes ahead then the various communities impacted will qualify for a Community Benefit Fund of £5,000 per annum per megawatt of installed capacity. This will equate to £195,000 per annum. Highland Council have produced their own policy on Community Benefit and the communities affected were free to adopt this or to go their own way. One suggestion would be to set up a central trust to be administered by representatives of the various communities and to which local organizations could apply for funds.

housing (estate houses) and habitat, which would comprise a demonstrator type project which could then be showcased to other estates. J Munro asked whether the funds will be split among the communities according to the impact upon them. F Milligan replied that this was hard to balance because of different ways of measuring this and also because of the Community Council area and number of residences. J Munro also asked for clarification as to whether the social housing proposed would not benefit the estate rather than the local residences. F Milligan responded that the affordable housing would be realized by bringing estate housing back into use, but would be done in cooperation with a local housing association or trust. Cllr Lobban stressed to the meeting the need to explore all the options before the wind farm was operational. • Aung San Suu Kyi – There was a follow up discussion about the Burmese opposition leader’s visit to Britain and Grantown on Spey offering her some sort of recognition. It was decided that as we had clearly missed this window of opportunity the subject should be re-examined at a later date. Proposed: D Scobbie Seconded: P Mathieson Matters Arising from AOB Item a – Alcohol Ban. As the Highland Council Ward Manager Sue Palmer is leaving, it was felt that it was best to wait until her replacement was in post to discuss licensing. Items b/d/e 30 mph Sign. On going. We may not have had the brightest weather, but this summer was lit up by the Olympic Games. After just a few short weeks, the eyes of the world turned on Britain once more as the Paralympics got underway. The Olympic tradition has always been about stretching the limits of human physical and mental capability and the Paralympics are no different. For that reason, they belong firmly at the heart of the international Olympic movement. The Highlands played an important part at the beginning of the 2012 Paralympic story when the flame was lit by the Scouts on the summit of Ben Nevis. Congratulations to all the athletes who took part in the games, particularly our local champions - David Smith, Karen Darke and Craig Maclean. At the time of writing this, David Smith has picked up his first gold for Team GB – hopefully one of many more to come.

As the local MSP for Inverness, and as the Minister for Tourism, I was asked at a special screening of Brave at Eden Court, to introduce, with a short speech, one of the actors, and the producer and director of the film. The actor was local man Kevin McKidd. I am told by the female half of the population that this Elgin loon is really pretty dishy. Anyway, Fiona Natasha and I present ourselves at Eden Court, to make the speech and then watch the film. The occasion was far more glitzy than politicians are used to. The outfits were of the Hollywood type. Local Singer Peigi Barker and her brother Donald were there to perform the song from the film: heart-breaking stuff. It was so beautiful, so pure in sound that I said in my remarks that the hankies were needed to be used before the film had begun. I made a short speech about the film – and the chance for Scottish tourism to an audience at Eden Court, and then introduced the real stars. I then went to take up my seat with Fiona, and our 4 year old Natasha. Unfortunately, at this point, because perhaps of the excitement of it all – my wee one was sick on my shoe! Obviously she was not feeling well, and was upset so she wanted to go home – which we did back to Boat of Garten, and so I did not get to see the film. i did say, that so far as i am aware at least, this has been the only occasion in over twenty years of public speaking that anyone has actually been physically sick after listening to what i said!

recipe

Chef’s Confidential Crab Fritters and Sweet Chilli Sauce. A simple starter that often goes on our specials board this month as local crab is available.

100g butter 150ml water 150g plain flour (sifted) A pinch of sea salt 1 egg and 1 yolk (beaten) 150g crab meat 1 tspn chopped chives or parsley

Method 1) Bring water to boil in a saucepan. Add butter and salt. When butter has melted, beat in flour to form smooth paste. Beat for 2/3 minutes over a low heat. 2) Chill pastry in a bowl for 20/30 minutes. 3) When cool, beat in egg. Mix well. 4) Fold in crab meat and chives. Season with black pepper to taste. 5) Using a teaspoon, drop crab mix into hot oil. Cook for 2/3 minutes.

Serve fritters with dressed salad, lemon, and sweet chilli sauce.

Enjoy!

Dreaming of... a Relaxing Cruise

One of the most rapidly expanding sectors of the Travel Industry is taking a cruise. It can be described as living in a luxury hotel which moves from destination to destination and there is no need to pack or unpack your suitcases more than once!

Cruising the Med’

The cruise market has seen steady growth, driven by innovation and the quality of the experience. There are large capacity increases being launched all the time, so what might have seemed like a very exclusive mode of transport historically has become much more available to the seasoned holidaymakers. There is a perception that going on a cruise is very formal and only for the older generation, but that is changing. The average age of people going on a cruise comes down each year and ships are coming into service to cater for different needs. Some prefer to do a Fly Cruise, where you join the ship in an already exotic or interesting destination. Some prefer a Fly and Stay, where they join the ship and before or after their cruise they spend some time in that country. Some prefer to depart and return to a home port, negating the need to fly at all. Pricing might sometimes seem high but remember that covers all your meals, entertainment and soft drinks – the only extras you are likely to run up are for alcoholic drinks and flutters on the gaming tables, if that is what takes your fancy. Imagine spending a day in an interesting European city, retiring to the ship for dinner and a good night's sleep, then waking up in the morning in another fascinating destination. Wonderful!
