PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS

PATRICK THE MOUSE Fondly, I still remember the first time that we met him when he had been brought by his buddies to our Bible study in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. To look at him, you would think that he was a bit of a hoodlum, but this was only due to financial scarcity. Patrick was just poor, not a criminal. As we travelled back and forth from the dark corner of the city between where we picked up our Zulu men and our meeting place, we found out that each one of them had a highly esteemed nickname. My wife innocently asked, “And Patrick, what is your nickname?” The crooked grin was quickly covered in embarrassment by both of his hands and he refused to answer. Playfully, one of his buddies chimed in, “His name is ‘mouse’!” Patrick almost fell to the floor. His shoulders quaked as he joined his friends in uproarious laughter. From that day he would forever be known to us as “Patrick the Mouse”. A few months later I took four young Zulu men on a one hundred and fifty mile jaunt to a service in one of our “sister” churches in a rural village. Patrick was there with his crooked smile beaming. When we arrived, we saw they had set up a small “circus” tent. Patrick truly enjoyed the service. His deep bass voice boomed out Zulu songs.

After the singing, the Zulu pastor preached a wonderful message of salvation in stirring Zulu. He turned to John 1:12, “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe in His name” Carefully the pastor explained that the word for “believe” is explained by the word “receive”. He succinctly explained, “It is not just believing something in your head, it is receiving a person into your life. Anybody can say that they ‘believe’ in Jesus, but it is something altogether different to ‘receive’ Him.” Then, he flipped his Zulu Bible to Romans 10:13: “For whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” He purposefully explained, “To receive Jesus, you must call upon His name and ask Him to forgive your sin and save your soul”. Afterwards, he invited anyone who would like to call upon the name of Jesus to come to the front of the tent. The first down the grass aisle was Patrick the Mouse. Patrick trusted Christ! Enthusiastically, his crooked smile flashed for all to see! In our last few months in South Africa, the economic downturn forced the factory to cut jobs and Patrick the Mouse was one of the unfortunate casualties. His job loss meant that his family was really suffering, so we took a load of groceries out to the little shack where all

fifteen of them stayed. Patrick the Mouse was not there, he was probably out enthusiastically looking for a job, any job! In the midst of these difficult times, Patrick caught a cold and began to suffer from what was thought to be just a bad case of the flu. Little did we know that this flu was a sign that the immune system of his body was shutting down. He was HIV positive, and did not even know it. Just a few weeks later, he had passed on into the arms of the Saviour whom he had so enthusiastically accepted. Today, I have absolutely no doubt that Patrick the Mouse is enjoying Heaven. Why? Because he had simply received Jesus Christ as his Saviour and Lord. And, what God did for Patrick the Mouse, He will do for you, if only you will call upon Jesus’ name and receive Him into your life. Why not today?

As summer draws to a close I think we can generally rejoice in the better than average weather that we have had over the last few months. I understand that during July and August we were often 2 or 3 degrees above average and sometimes as much as 9 degrees above. Perhaps we should be thinking of renaming ourselves the Northern Riviera!

PARLIAMENT BLOG As a Highland MP, I believe that one of the most remarkable characteristics of our region is the strength of its communities. More often than not, communities are much better at making decisions on local issues than national governments - and that is true no more than here in the Highlands. Earlier this month I was delighted to announce an increase in budget for the Coastal Communities Fund. By delivering funds directly from the Crown Estate to seaside towns and villages, I believe we can help communities create thousands of jobs and build stronger economies. We also announced that €172m of EU funds would be allocated to Highlands and Islands as an important new source of finance to stimulate local growth and jobs. Despite a real terms cut to the EU budget, the Highlands will benefit from the full funding package. The Highland Council also see the benefits of this approach, and they are working hard to create Area Communities that are efficient and community led. As one of the fastest growing regions in the UK, I am very proud of the hard work of Highlanders to strengthen our communities.

Danny Alexander MP

The tourist summer season has been excellent for many parts of Scotland, thanks in part to the marvellous weather that we have enjoyed. But, some in the sector do not get the credit they deserve. One such group is those who run and work in caravan and holiday home parks. As tourism minister, I am highlighting the good job they do. In Grantown on Spey, for example, the park is host to several hundred of visitors over the summer. These visitors will of course frequent local attractions, spend in local shops, and enjoy a wee refreshment or two in local hostelries. In fact, there are probably more visitors to most parks than all but the largest hotels in the North. Recently the UK Government proposed a new charge of VAT at 20% on caravans - a measure which would have decimated this important sector. I brought together a meeting of park owners and related businesses from throughout Scotland and put their views in to the UK Government. Others south of the border lobbied too, and this new tax measure, fortunately, was dropped. But having removed this threat, we should now celebrate the successes and contributions made by these parks - which we have perhaps taken for granted for too long.

La Taverna

“...a wonderful dining out experience for the whole family. With spectacular mountain views, in the town of Aviemore, La Taverna is a family run Italian Restaurant, Bar and Takeaway that has remained so for 36 years. The bar boasts a fine selection of beverages including imported Italian lager on tap, local beers and Italian liqueurs. However you'd be hard pushed not to be seduced by the aromas coming from the kitchen and enjoy the cuisine. The restaurant seats 135 but still manages to keep a cosy and intimate atmosphere with good spacing between the tables. At the heart of the kitchen are pizza ovens imported directly from Naples, as is the flour for the dough and the tomato for the topping, giving a taste of total authenticity. Along with the bold Italian decor throughout you could be forgiven for thinking you were staring out at Vesuvius and not the Cairngorms. Pizza features largely on the menu with toppings of all varieties, from vegetarian to seafood (you'd be foolish not to try them) but it boasts so much more. Great selections of anti-pasti, starters, pasta dishes and full main courses are also available. For those hard pushed to choose there is an "all-you-can-eat" buffet option, for children and adults, where you can enjoy unlimited trips to feast on a mouthwatering assortment of pasta dishes, pizzas, salads and a delectable selection of desserts, including homemade ice cream - a delight for the eyes as well as the belly and all for a very reasonable price too! We kicked things off with anti-pasti. Garnishes of parma ham, salami and mortadella amidst a delicious array of chargrilled courgettes, mixed peppers, artichokes and sun blushed tomatoes, with mozzarella and olives thrown in for good measure, all served with crusty bread and a balsamic dip. Perfectly portioned and absolutely delicious the taste buds were definitely tickled and ready for the feast to follow. To experience as much variety as possible we decided on the buffet for our main meal and nothing disappointed, enticing us back to reload our plates several times. We could not resist sampling some of the heavenly desserts from the menu The panna cotta came laiden with fruits of the forest and was absolute perfection. The affogatto al caffe comprised of ice cream (homemade) with a shot each of amaretto and espresso which all combined magically to finish things off with a bang. The service throughout was first class making it a wonderful dining out experience for the whole family. However, if you prefer to enjoy the fare in the comfort of your own home, a takeaway menu is also available. All in all, a brilliant night out with superb food and great atmosphere all in the heart of the beautiful Cairngorm National Park.

Dreaming of... ...a Skiing Holiday As the warm weather starts to turn autumnal we turn our minds to that wonderful winter pastime – the skiing holiday. Europe has become closer and closer with dedicated flights from Scottish airports, mainly Edinburgh and Glasgow with some from Aberdeen and now Inverness.

A good skiing holiday is a total change to your normal routine, but it is not a lazy option – skiing (or snowboarding) itself uses muscles that we don't otherwise use every day and although exhilarating, it can be hard work to ski all day every day for a week or a fortnight. People who make the most of the daylight hours, getting out onto the slopes after 9am but before 10am, see the best groomed snow of the day. How people can party all night and ski all day we have never figured out, but we find skiing more rewarding than partying anyway, so a good night's sleep is always required. It is a great advantage to be able to test your interest in skiing at a Scottish resort – if you like it you can continue to use the local facilities at weekends but it is tempting to go to the greater snow fields of Europe, and then the ultimate treat is in North America and Canada. In Europe the popular countries are France, Switzerland and Austria. French resorts tend to be high such as Tignes (the highest in France) or Chamonix which is a small French industrial town surrounded by three clear skiing areas. Swiss resorts tend to be picturesque and Alpine-like, including Verbier and Zermatt – Verbier is high with good skiing, and is a mecca for the British if that is what you want, whereas Zermatt has retained its charm as a Swiss-style resort. Zermatt also offers huge areas of skiing as just over the mountain under the shadow of the Matterhorn you are into Cervinia in Italy – another wide range of pistes. Austria, although not the highest resorts, offers the most charming and stylised resorts such as Kitzbuhel and St Anton. The west coast of Canada has wonderful skiing in Banff, Lake Louise and Whistler, where the winter Olympics were held in 2010. Whistler offers so much choice there are even 2 mountains to choose from, both offering guides to show you round. The ski lifts are generally larger and wider than European ones, as are the pistes, and the mountain restaurants are enormous and modern, but very efficient. The ski police keep you on your toes. The final but very important consideration is the cost of your skiing holiday. The key components are your flights, your accommodation, your food and drink bills, your equipment hire (skis or snowboard and boots), and your lift passes, but these can range enormously in price and there are always some very good deals around.

renewable energy The UK currently relies heavily on coal, oil, and natural gas for its energy. Fossil fuels are non-renewable, that is, they draw on finite resources that will eventually dwindle, becoming too expensive or too environmentally damaging to retrieve. In contrast, the many types of renewable energy resources-such as wind and solar energy-are constantly replenished and will never run out.

Most renewable energy comes either directly or indirectly from the sun. Sunlight, or solar energy, can be used directly for heating and lighting homes and other buildings, for generating electricity, and for hot water heating, solar cooling, and a variety of commercial and industrial uses.

The Future is Clean! abundant element on the Earth. But it doesn't occur naturally as a gas. It's always combined with other elements, such as with oxygen to make water. Once separated from another element, hydrogen can be burned as a fuel or converted into electricity. Not all renewable energy resources come from the sun. Geothermal energy taps the Earth's internal heat for a variety of uses, including electric power production, and the heating and cooling of buildings. And the energy of the ocean's tides come from the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun upon the Earth. In fact, ocean energy comes from a number of sources. In addition to tidal energy, there's the energy of the ocean's waves, which are driven by both the tides and the winds. The sun also warms the surface of the ocean more than the ocean depths, creating a temperature difference that can be used as an energy source. All these forms of ocean energy can be used to produce electricity.

The sun's heat also drives the winds, whose energy, is captured with wind turbines. Then, the winds and the sun's heat cause water to evaporate. When this water vapor turns into rain or snow and flows downhill into rivers or streams, its energy can be captured using hydroelectric power. Along with the rain and snow, sunlight causes plants to grow. The organic matter that makes up those plants is known as biomass. Biomass can be used to produce electricity, transportation fuels, or chemicals. The use of biomass for any of these purposes is called bioenergy. Hydrogen also can be found in many organic compounds, as well as water. It's the most

WIND... ...ENERGY OF THE FUTURE

1 Renewables Ltd, operating from its base at Inverness Airport, is one of the few truly local wind turbine developers operating in the North. Formed as a spin-off from 1 Architects Ltd in 2010, the company, founded by Ian Sutherland McCook and Alastair Robertson, has now been joined by Claudio

first portfolio of sites now moving into the pre-construction are in Caithness, Banffshire, Inverness-shire, and The Borders. The second portfolio will all be based in Cornwall, an area that like the Highlands has much open land and an abundance of wind. And like the Highlands it has sensitive issues that demand close attention. A spokesman for 1 Renewables is keen to point out that the joint roots of the company, being local and also developing out of an architectural practice, has given them many key advantages, particularly when operating in the North. As well as understanding the local landscape and the culture, their professional background imparts a rigour and discipline that has served them well in dealing with the extreme technical demands inherent in wind power projects. Despite the current controversy around energy policies and resources it is inevitable that as fossil fuels deplete, renewables will take on an increasingly important role. Scotland has tremendous wind prospects, and based in the North, 1 Renewables Ltd will continue to play their part in developing these.
