The Editor
By now we shall know the fate of the Referendum Vote, Scotland will either be moving towards becoming an independent country or will be staying within the “Union”. Either way - grass will still grow, songs will still be sung, and tears will still be shed. Albert Camus said this: “Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend.”

Words by the Wayside “We will not have this man to reign over us.” (Luke 19:14)
Reader, is this your position and state of heart towards The Lord Jesus Christ? Is your desire for life always taken up with lust and pleasures, doing that which is right in your own eyes? Be not deceived: God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Reader, you are dead in sins before God and bound for Hell if you have not bowed the knee and asked Christ for salvation. The Lord Jesus is the only way for you; God shall judge the secrets of man by what they have done with His Son.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Are you willing to be changed? One of my hobbies is collecting old missionary biographies. I love reading them. I love even holding them and thinking about those who were inspired by them before me. Recently, I found a copy of an old biography written about my favourite missionary, Scotsman, Robert Moffat (circa 1886). Moffat’s youngest son, John, wrote this book that told of his parents missionary labors. To make a long story short, while living in South Africa, after reading that book, I drove 800 miles to Kuruman to see the old stone church that Moffat had built. (Yes! It is still there, in its cow dung floor and thatched roof glory!) The Kalahari Desert was silent that morning except for the sentinels of the African bush, the Hoopoe birds who were quietly calling outside in their loving laments. As I sat there in that stone structure in the cool of that African morning and I contemplated what made the difference in the life of my great hero named Moffat. That day, I identified five things that marked him as a man that was changed by His Master, Jesus Christ: 1. MOFFAT LISTENED - The young Scots lad one day absent-mindedly walked across a bridge and God changed his whole life. There on the other side of that bridge he saw tacked to a pole an expired advertisement for a missionary meeting. That simple piece of cardboard opened his ears to the voice of God and his life was never the same. Are you listening for that Voice of God within your own heart? 2. MOFFAT LEFT - When he heard that Voice; his heart was immediately stamped for departure. His settled life as a gardener in Manchester could no longer have any
known chieftains such as Afrikaner of the Nama tribe, Waterboer of the Griqua tribe, Tothibi of Tlhaping tribe, Makaba of the Ngwaketse tribe, Sechele of the Kwena tribe, and Mzilikazi of the Matabele tribe. Are you willing to love Jesus Christ so much that you 3. MOFFAT LEARNED - Robert Moffat was love others to Him? constantly learning what would work to survive in his new culture. He was an alien Wouldn’t these five things make a difference to that African culture, but because he was in your life as well? A lot of things can be always willing to learn, he provided shade for argued about concerning religion, but no one the young African converts to learn about can successfully argue with the fact of a Christ. He did not reproduce a British church changed life? Robert Moffat was changed by in the South African soil. Instead he provided Jesus Christ! shade until the infant believers could grow 2 Corinthians 5:17 says it so well, “Therefore their own church in their own soil. Are you if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: also willing to learn from God’s Word that old things are passed away; behold, all same life-changing message? things are become new. 4. MOFFAT LABOURED - Mission historians believe that Moffat had three major Are you willing to be changed? achievements in his fifty-plus years of missionary ministry. First, he built the infrastructure of the mission in Kuruman; Rev. Rick Moeller second, he translated and printed the Grantown Baptist Church Setswana Bible; and third, he pushed the mission frontier northwards into unreached areas. (Not bad for a former gardener!) It was imperative, he must leave the cool, cloudy days of Britain for the sun drenched deserts of Africa. Are you willing to leave behind your old life for blessed new life in Christ?

PARLIAMENT BLOG This summer I had the chance to visit the goings on at the RSPB’s Abernethy Forest Lodge. The site and adjoining tree nursery are now a hive of activity. And it was a thrill to see the work that the volunteers and staff at Forest Lodge are doing to help protect our natural habitat in the Highlands. Whether you’re a supporter of the project, or not, there is no question their enthusiasm and love for our area is driving the endeavour forward. By planting up to 100,000 trees over the next 10 years, as part of a 200 year project, this lifetime of work and achievement will stand for centuries to come. And a recent grant from ‘Awards for All’ will help them stay on track. When it’s finished, they hope that the forest will help support our wildlife and be returned to its original state, dating back thousands of years to the time of the great Caledonian Forest.

Forecasting the future is not a science, and so, writing this blog just over a fortnight before the independence referendum, no one can be certain of the result. This edition of "Spotlight” will be published only after the vote, and therefore perhaps I can make the following two points: First it is clear that all must accept the result, and that the victors should, be magnanimous and the vanquished should accept the outcome with good grace. That, after all, is the purpose of democracy. When we look at the events in Ukraine, Syria and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it is clear that by being able to settle our differences at the ballot box, we are very fortunate. The second point is that all of us - on both sides - must put our differences aside, and if YES secure the best results for Scotland in independence negotiations, this will take around 18 months. If NO, then of course we must get on with the job - including swift delivery of all of those new powers promised for Scotland. Fergus Ewing MSP

Energise Your Home? Solar panels are a great way of cutting your electricity bills - find out whether your home is suitable. We all want to live self-sustainably, or at least reduce the carbon footprint of our home, and solar panels make that dream possible. What are solar panels? Solar panels are made of photovoltaic (PV) cells, which turn sunlight into electricity. This electricity can then be fed into your home's mains electricity supply. The technology behind solar is relatively old, despite their futuristic appeal, but while the basics are the same the efficiency of solar panels has improved greatly in recent years. How do solar panels work? Solar panels are an environmentally friendly way of producing electricity for your home. The electricity produced by your solar panels will be used to power any appliances currently in use within your home. Any electricity which is not used will be sent to the grid and sold at an agreed rate through the Feed-in Tariff scheme. Is it sunny enough for solar power to be generated in the UK? Yes. While it’s true that the UK isn't exactly bathed in sunshine, solar panels, despite their name, don't need direct sunlight - they also work in cloudy or overcast weather. Is my home suitable for solar panels? While solar works for a large number of properties in the UK there are still some areas and types of roof that are not suitable. Remember, there are exceptions to every rule, so the best way to check if solar is right for you is to get in touch with the company in question. They'll talk you through your options and do a survey if necessary.
Will the quality of my electricity suffer? No. You won't notice any difference. If the panels aren't producing much electricity, you'll just use electricity from the Grid instead. Do I need planning permission for solar panels? You generally don't need planning consent for solar panels. However, if you live in a conservation area or a listed building you should check first. It's best to check with your local council planning officer if you're not sure. How can I be sure I'm using the free electricity? You won't notice the difference between using your free electricity and using electricity from the Grid. Can I still switch my gas and electricity supplier? Yes, you can still switch your gas and electricity supplier if you have solar panels. You will continue to receive your Feed-in Tariff rate from the same supplier. How can I make the most of the free electricity from my solar panels? To make sure you use as much of the free electricity from your solar panels as possible you need to try and use more electricity during the day, when your panels are producing electricity. You could try: s 0UTTING THE WASHING MACHINE TUMBLE DRYER and dishwasher. s #HARGING mobile phones, laptops & gadgets during the day & using their battery power at night. s 5SING AN electric slow cooker to cook during the day. Alternatively you may be able to store some of the energy produced by your panels with a little help from your installer. Having an immersion heater connected to your panels for example is a good way to store your energy for when you need it. Source: U Switch. September 2014

The Golf View Hotel & Spa, Nairn “...lives up to 4 star rating...” When it was suggested that we have dinner at the Golf View Hotel, we were delighted as we have had many people tell us how wonderful their dining experience was. Expecting a perfect evening, we weren't disappointed. On arrival, my girlfriend, Natalie and I were seated in the hotel’s spacious conservatory where we were met with the most spectacular views of the Moray Firth. Much to our delight, Thursday night is Steak Night - and boy was it fantastic! It certainly lived up to its 4 Star rating, as it was probably one of the best steak nights we've ever attended. For starters I decided to be adventurous and the Pan Fried Scottish Scallops with Summer Pea Purée, Crispy Pancetta and a Salad of Pea Shoots looked too delicious to miss out on. Blissfully, it lived up to the waiter’s recommendations. Natalie couldn’t resist the Wild Mushrooms, Toast, Poached Duck Egg and Hollandaise Sauce – another winning combination! For our main courses I had the Sirloin Steak and Natalie had Fillet Steak. Both were cooked to our individual requirements and served with Chunky Chips, Mushrooms, Onion Rings and Salad all washed down with a complimentary bottle of red wine. (On Thursday nights every steak main course comes with a free half bottle of wine). On Sauces were available on request. The portions were hearty and the flavours matched the scenery, absolutely amazing! Our only dilemma of the evening was to decide if we were going to indulge in the delightful selection of sweets on offer. “We only live once”, was Natalie’s response to the choice in front of us! I had Lemon Cheesecake drizzled with Raspberry Coulis - light, delicious and perfect for an already expanding waistline. Natalie surrendered to the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Warm Toffee Sauce - why wouldn’t she? In all honesty, there was nothing I could fault - from the setting, to the food, to the service, everything was amazing. I would suggest you’ve not experienced a steak night until you’re tried the Golf View Hotel on a Thursday night! Overall it was PERFECT! Walks Series
Daviot Woods Daviot South Inverness
Woods
South Inverness
Daviot Wood lies to the south of Inverness on the ridge between Strathnairn and Loch Ness. The forest walks allow visitors and locals alike to enjoy the peace and quiet of a semi-mature pine forest with opportunities for relaxation following the rigours of driving along the A9. A number of extensions have recently been added to the walks in Daviot Wood. The walks vary in length and are colour coded, allowing of various permutations. A map near the information office in the car park shows the layout and enables a choice to be made. Here the red and green walks have been combined to give variety of tracks and of woodland. In dry weather no
special footwear is needed; wear wellies or boots in wet conditions. This is a good family walk, with no steep bits. In winter these trails are very ski-able. The wood supports a diverse range of wildlife, invertebrates, birds and animals. If you are quiet, you may see Red Squirrels and Roe Deer. ACCESS INFO The car park is on the northbound side of the A9 dual carriageway, about two miles south of Inverness (NH 710412); no bus service. 6 kms
