“Achangeisasagoodasarest.”

Established in 1921

I’m not sure who first said that and I’m not entirely sure I agree. It’s certainly nice to have a rest. but is it “achange” that will bring this about? I think sometimes we convince ourselves that, by its very nature, change is good, whereas I often find that it can bring challenges which it is all too easy to underestimate. Not always, but sometimes, we may actually be better off sticking with what we know or at least trying to minimise the volume of change that we take on at any one time.

A W LAING ARE A 4TH GENERATION, FRIENDLY FAMILY BUSINESS AND LIKE GRANTOWN IS BUILT ON SOLID FOUNDATIONS.

The theory that change is always good sounds a bit like “thegrassisalwaysgreeneronthe othersideofthefence”- well I have a road next to mine!!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS We’ve just completed a whole range of work on St Columba’s Episcopal Church, Grantown on Spey. New lighting, new heating, a new sound system all have brought welcome enhancements to our building. People look a little askance if you suggest that HEATING IS MISSION ! The same is case with toilets!. Whilst long established and hardy worshippers may harken back to the good old days when freezing temperatures were guaranteed,, the truth is that we are not likely to draw people into church communities by inviting them to worship in Arctic conditions. I remember one church I used to visit where there was no heating and on the occasion when temperatures had dropped to -0. 9 C degrees we decided to cancel and send the ‘small’ congregation elsewhere. One lady was outraged at our wimpishness and she was 102! We have also benefitted from a significant extension to our kitchen which means our opportunities for hospitality are much enhanced.

The key to all this is NOT just what has been done but why. Church buildings can very easily become club houses for the ‘faithful’… primarily there to meet their needs. Sometimes church communities can be very protective of their buildings against any change. For many, not just church goers, our buildings have important associations.. a wedding, a funeral a baptism..some special occasion. Often they play an important role in our townscapes. Our buildings are NOT there to be museums, but must be allowed to evolve to meet the needs of current and future generations. The building is just the skin, what matters is the community that gathers within it to worship God. Our Scottish climate doesn’t naturally lend itself to regular open air worship, so we need our buildings! Some of our buildings may inspire through the sheer majesty of their architecture. ALL are called to inspire through the worship and fellowship that happens within them. As I’ve said

they are NOT club houses. They are a resource for the local church to reach out in love and care to the wider community. They are to be places of welcome to all. They are places of support for those who feel vunerable. Our buildings should be outward and visible signs of what goes on within.. Jesus’ ministry was never constrained by bricks and mortar or indeed by structure and regulation. He went where He saw a need. He drew people to Him not just by His preaching but by who He is. Our buildings can be useful tools in setting forward the Gospel, but what ultimately matters is the way in which the communities that gather within them demonstrate the living Gospel to the whole community You are.. built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone Ephesians Ch2 v20 Richard Gillings

Every year Electoral Registration Officers must issue households in their area with an enquiry form, to know who is eligible to vote at each property. Enquiry forms were issued to properties in your area on 15 August 2016. If you have yet to respond, final reminder forms will be issued from Monday 10 October 2016. Non response to the final reminder will result in a visit from a doorstep canvasser.

You can respond by internet, telephone or SMS message – just follow the instructions sent with your form. This is the cheapest way for you to provide us with the information and saves taxpayers’ money. Alternatively, complete the paper form and return to us, postage is free (to the user). So far, over £4,200 of taxpayers’ money has been saved in postages due to responses made by the internet, telephone or SMS. Not already registered? If your name does not appear on your household enquiry form, you will then need to register to vote. The easiest way to register is online at

www.gov.uk/register-to-vote Not being on the electoral register can affect your credit rating.

PARLIAMENT BLOG The accomplishment of Scottish athletes with an incredible 13 medals and the record team GB haul, shows that with the right level of commitment, great results can be achieved. I doubt there are many who would not have marvelled at the performance of those athletes. Achievements such as these, only happen with hard work, talent and, that ‘so often’ missing ingredient - investment in facilities. Investment that is also needed in community facilities to set the environment for success for those who often simply do not get the chance to get involved. I have no doubt that our success at the games, has inspired many people and we should want to see more of that for the Highlands. We cannot underestimate the positive influence seeing athletes like Andy Murray perform well at the games has on our young people. We must ensure that they have the opportunity to emulate these champions and have the facilities to turn their

dreams into reality.

"Thunder in the Glens" came to Aviemore once again this year, bringing thousands of Harley Owners to enjoy all the temptations of the Highlands. Harley Davidsons are of course for ever associated, for my generation, with the1969 film "Easy Rider." Its two main characters, played by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, were Harley riding hippies who after completing a drug deal in California then travelled cross country in search of spiritual truth. These days, however, the average Harley Owner is just as likely to be a stockbroker, actuary or lawyer. And ( I trust) less trouble to the local constabulary.
