Summer went by in a blur for me. One minute I was looking forward to the longer days and nights and then, all of a sudden, the temperatures seem to be edging down and it’s getting darker earlier again. I think I must be a summer fiend. - I love wearing shorts and fiercely resist the onset of Autumn, although I do really love the autumn colours greens slowly morphing to browns, yellows and reds. And then, of course, we can start looking forward to Christmas!! - well, perhaps not just yet!!

Who is this Jesus? That was the question that was flooding the minds of every citizen of the village of Nazareth when the home town boy came back and spoke in the local assembly (Mark 6:1-6). Almost all of Jesus’ boyhood and early manhood had been spent in this back-water place and the local yokels thought that they knew him so well. They all said, “He’s one of us, he certainly can’t be any better than us! We know his mother and his family. They’re nothing special. Who does he think he is?” But, their thoughts had been clouded by their preconceptions. They thought of him as only a local tradesman, a carpenter that was only well known for making ploughs and wagons. He was the son of a poor local woman named Mary and even his birth had some questionable details about it. Many people have the same problem in 2017, they think of Jesus as only a historical figure, just a really talented teacher that seemed to do some pretty special things in his day and time, but nothing that can affect anybody today. A second thing that those locals from Nazareth did was to let their passions cloud their judgement of Jesus. Every
Jew in those days was looking for a leader who could get them out of the mess of the occupation of the oppressive Roman military forces in their area. But, this Jesus just didn’t feel like anything more than a carpenter. The problem with this is that feelings rarely prove very much at all. I am a grandfather and have two lovely granddaughters, but some mornings I just don’t feel like a grandfather, but that does not mean that I’m not one. Sometimes I might feel like a jet pilot, but you better not trust me to fly you to London. There is more to it than feelings! The bottom line was that the citizens of Nazareth were simply trusting in their five senses about this man called Jesus. And, by their own perceptions, he looked just like a carpenter, he walked just like a carpenter, he smelled just like a carpenter, and he dressed just like a carpenter. Even his accent when he spoke sounded just like a carpenter. So, he must be just a carpenter. The problem is that there is more to human beings, more than just their senses. There is more to life than just what we can see, hear, and feel. And, if as the recent news reports were correct: if

Jesus fed 5000 people with just a few fish and a bit of bread, if Jesus healed people who had suffered their whole lifetimes from critical diseases, and if Jesus raised a twelve-year-old girl from the dead, then it was foolish to leave such details out of the equation just because of his past employment opportunities. Jesus made it very clear that he was more than a carpenter when he said in John 14:6 "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” If Jesus is the way to God (the Father), then there is something pretty special about him. We might just need to get to know him better. Jesus, there is just something different about him. Drop your prejudices and get to know him better and you will see for yourself. Besides, what’s wrong with being a carpenter?

Summer is behind us but as we head into the Autumn we can reflect on the fact that there is always lots to see and do in Moray. The huge range and variety of community events brought visitors to the area and local people together. Whether it was Keith Show, one of our spectacular Highland Games or a village fete I enjoyed over the summer; we’re all grateful for the massive amount of work that was undertaken by all the volunteers and organisers to ensure the events were a success. I’ve been delighted to welcome individual Moray constituents, families and larger groups to Westminster since my election and would be pleased to meet anyone else who is interested in visiting the House of Commons. As always I can be contacted on douglas.ross.mp@parliament.uk or via my constituency office at 63 High Street, Forres IV36 1PB or on 01309 679253.

It’s great to see so many visitors from all over Europe and the world enjoying all that the Highlands and Islands have to offer – including our amazing food and drink products which make the most of our natural larder. Protecting the provenance of our quality produce is vital to our export success and it’s worrying to think that our GM free status might now be under threat. Currently, discussions are being held in advance of new trade deals with the likes of the US and Japan. Without being able to have a say, Scotland could find itself having to accept foodstuffs made with GM cultivated ingredients and we could lose one of the unique selling points of the number one contributor to our economy.

Scotland’s reputation as a world leader in renewables was bolstered by last week’s news that the sector has already generated enough electricity this year to supply in excess of Scotland’s demand for six days. Our renewables sector is a fantastic success story and I am delighted to see it grow from strength to strength, with the Highlands and Islands well and truly leading the way. Already more than half of all gross electricity consumption in Scotland comes from renewables. As well as helping to tackle climate change, the sector continues to attract investment, creating desirable skilled jobs in the Highlands & Islands and across Scotland. I will be visiting some of the local businesses working in renewables over the summer recess and look forward to hearing about their plans for the future. I also have a jam-packed tour of surgeries and door-to-door visits arranged and I hope to catch up with as many of you as possible. You can find details of surgeries on my website at www.drewhendrymp.scot.

Reader, don’t walk away from the mercy of God demonstrated in Jesus Christ’s death on the Cross of Calvary for your sin. Christ died for the ungodly, it is only the ungodly Christ can save, for He came to save sinners and if you don’t acknowledge you are a sinner and have need of a Saviour, you can never be saved from the penalty of your sins. Behold, Now is the accepted time for you. Behold Now is the day of salvation.

Every year Electoral Registration Officers must issue households in their area with an enquiry form, to know who is eligible to vote at each property. Enquiry forms were issued to properties in your area on 1 August 2017. If you have yet to respond, reminder forms will be issued from Friday 1 September 2017.
www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290
You can respond by internet, telephone or SMS message – just follow the instructions sent with your form. This is the cheapest way for you to provide us with the information and saves taxpayers’ money. Alternatively, complete the paper form and return to us. Last year over £10,000 of taxpayers’ money was saved in postages due to responses made by the internet, telephone or SMS. Not already registered? If your name does not appear on your household enquiry form, you will then need to register to vote. The easiest way to register is online at
www.gov.uk/register-to-vote Not being on the electoral register can affect your credit rating.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

Should I Put an Autumn Feed on the Grass ? Most folk doing just the basics to keep the grass in reasonable condition will generally think about putting on a feed in the spring,
This is only part of the control required however. Once the current growth has been killed off, it should be scarified out with a rake, or a scarifying machine, so the grass goes through the winter with a reduced amount of material on the surface, which is actually a favourable habitat for more moss to grow, if left uncleared,! Scarifying is a topic on it’s own which I might cover next month. September is the last month when you might hope to get seed to germinate in Scotland. You need a ground temperature of 10C, so if you want to do any end of season repairs, don’t delay.
and a feed in the autumn. They are quite different recipes though. A spring feed should mainly feature nitrogen to get it growing again after the winter, and put some colour into the leaf. The autumn feed should contain iron (ferrous sulphate) to control moss growth, and winter nutrients to help the roots through the winter. We use a soluble iron mix to make up a 5 gallon backpack sprayer, which makes for an even application. Many of you will have put down an autumn feed and seen the moss turn brown/black, pretty much overnight. This is caused by the iron in the mix, which dehydrates the top growth of moss, killing it off.
