Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings It’s been an unusually hot and sunny summer. The usual annual misery of the summer break filled with downpours, cold weather and disappointment was replaced by the opportunity to bask in the glorious sunshine, warming up our bodies and soaking up the sunlight as if to store it for the winter. But not everybody was happy. The emptying water reservoirs, the incredibly low levels of water in rivers and burns, the parched fields and so on caused massive headaches for farmers, gardeners, ghillies and a whole range of people whose livelihoods were put in danger. They looked up to the skies, hoping for rain and the relief it would bring. We might think they were just party-poopers or whingers, spoiling our perfect summer holiday weather with their desire for rain. But that might be a very short-sighted view for us to hold. In the Bible natural disasters were interpreted as God’s punishment for people’s immoral behaviour. The most well-known is the story of the Flood and Noah saved in his ark, followed by the destruction of the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah. In the 2nd Book of Chronicles there’s an
interesting passage: ‘When I close the sky so that there is no rain, or command the locusts to destroy the land, or send sicknesses to my people and if my people who are called by my name become humble and pray, and look for me, and turn away from their evil ways, then I will hear them from heaven. I will forgive their sin and heal their land.’ Nowadays this kind of interpretation of natural disasters can be embarrassing, rather than convincing. Unlike people in the ancient past, we have a better understanding of the world around us and of the various processes shaping it. And yet, when bad things happen, there are people asking why God didn’t prevent it happening. Here’s the thing. When we dig through the ancient language of the Bible and uncover its time-proof message, we can find calls like the one above still relevant. The core message of the Good Book is that each one of us is in constant need of personal change. We are ‘naturally’ inclined to be selfish and self-centred, with self-interest as the focal point of our life. This kind of attitude is effortless. The opposite

attitude, however, requires effort, mindfulness and self-awareness. Being selfish is easy; being charitable is hard work. Those difficult moments remind us that we are not invincible. We are fragile and we depend on others. Those ‘others’ are similarly not invincible, and they too rely on others. As a society we rely on one another, directly and indirectly. If everyone is ready to put the brakes on their selfishness, we may yet see a better world around us.

Parliament Blog The major issue I have been contacted about in recent weeks has been the downgrading of the maternity unit at Dr Gray’s. We have seen a fantastic campaign launched by the KeepMUM group with a peaceful protest in Elgin where hundreds marched in support of retaining our services locally. At the public meeting where NHS Grampian promised to answer questions from the public, many were left frustrated as the panel simply skirted round the key issues. The fact is the MUM campaign was launched thirty years ago to secure this vital maternity unit in Moray and it’s shocking that in 2018 it should have to be reformed to maintain the service. The examples that have been shared with me about problems encountered by mums going to Aberdeen to give birth are not scare stories to cause concern, they are reality and proves why so many fear the proposals which took effect from July. I have also been keen to ensure this remains a non-party political campaign. We will win if we work together in a united front, rather than try to score cheap party political points. I know this was the success of the campaign thirty years ago, and I hope the same approach can bring about the same results now.
As Parliamentarians head back to Parliament after the summer recess I’d like to reflect on the summer. Many of us will have enjoyed time off with our friends and families in the past weeks. But this isn’t possible for everyone. Tourism is the biggest industry in the Highlands and its workers can generally forget getting time off in summer. Likewise, our valuable public services; NHS, Council, Emergency Services and others were working hard for us whilst many of us were relaxing. I’m also reminded that while many of us were able to enjoy time away from the routine, there are those for whom summer provides no respite from the grind of struggling to make ends. And I look forward to returning to Parliament to help them.
John Finnie MSP
Douglas Ross MP
Summer recess is a great opportunity to get out and about to every corner of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey. This really is the best part about being an MP as I get to see first hand the fantastic work that is going on across our constituency. I greatly enjoyed catching up with folk at The Grantown Show and Nairn Highland Games – thanks as always goes to the dedicated volunteers that make events like these happen. In addition to my regular surgeries I also clocked up the miles on my summer surgery tour of our towns and villages. Getting out into our communities is by far the best way to find out not only what is happening but how I, as your MP can help. Details of my forthcoming surgeries can be found at drewhendrymp.scot

SpotLIGHT Garden
Brought to you by:
A Dry Summer this Year - at Last - and Now the Grass is Compacted ! The Beechgrove Garden and all the other gardening advice this last month will be about aerating the lawn now. At GreenThumb, this is what we’re doing too. Compacted ground prevents the take up of moisture, prevents air circulation and congests the root zone in the turf. All of these factors weaken the grass, it loses colour, growth slows right down and the lawn becomes prone to the invasion of MOSS and lichen over the Winter.
Aerator
For small lawns traditionally this has meant forking the ground, but for a larger lawn this is not really feasible. What we do, and the golf courses do this too, is run over the grass with a hollow-core tining machine (you can see from the picture this is a heavy piece of kit). It pulls thousands of cores out the ground in no time, and instantly eases the compaction. It’s probably the best thing we can do for our customers, as no-one has an aerator in their shed! However you tackle this, it is a key part of the battle in our climate to control MOSS. Oh - and remember to keep leaves off the grass through the autumn.
For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area. he Gather'n Cafe is in Aberlour situated in the old Clydesdale Bank Building right next door to the Co-op. Our first impressions walking into the cafe was all the gifts, and how bright and clean it was, We ordered at the counter and then went through the back to take our seats (you can choose to sit at the front of the cafe or through the back). Having a look around while we waited on our food, we saw the wool shop ‘Three Bags Wool’ which is just through a door behind where we were seated. It had a wonderful selection of wools and everything someone who knits would need. While we were sitting waiting for our food I noticed just how comfortable the seating was and instantly felt like it was the perfect place to relax.
T
Our order came – I had the homemade Tomato Soup with a Cheese and Tomato Toastie and Heather had the Cajun Chicken Panini. All of it was just perfect and very tasty, the Salad Garnish that came with the Toastie and Panini was lovely with a nice dressing on it. We also had coffee which had a lovely smooth taste to it, the coffee is bought from the Inverness Highland Roasting Co. After a lot of thought we
decided to go for the Gluten Free Lemon Drizzle which tasted amazing and I would have quite happily have had another slice. I was advised that they use only butter in their cooking and baking. The Gather'n Cafe really does have everything for everybody in it, they serve All Day Breakfasts, Baked Potatoes, they have a Mr Whippy Machine and in the summer months they have Artisan Hotdogs. The Gather'n Cafe also serve Gluten free food on request. We took back cakes for the office and we were told that the take-a-way containers and cups are bio degradable. I would certainly recommend this cafe to everyone. The food is fantastic, the staff are really friendly and the over all experience was very good.
