PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS

The summer is coming to a close. So what did you do for your summer holidays? Did you get up early every morning, put your uniform on, make your bed, turn up for breakfast on time before heading off for a day packed full of activities which would challenge you? No? So you are not an Army Cadet then. I had the real delight of spending 12 days away with the 2 Battalion Highlands Army Cadets at their summer camp in July. I am Padre to the Battalion along with another ministry colleague. This was my first camp and I have to confess I was quite apprehensive before I set off. But I had a brilliant two weeks with some wonderful young people and adult volunteers. The young people were an inspiration. Almost with exception they were determined and hard working. Getting up at 5am to head out to the ‘field’ for morning exercise, despite painful ribs did not deter one young lady. If she had had her own way she would have spent the night out along with the rest of her Company sleeping on the ground under a ‘basher’. But the camp nurse was insistent that she stayed on camp on a mattress! I spent one night out in the field so as to experience the camouflage paint, the running through a filed escaping the enemy, and then sleeping for five hours before getting up at 5am to begin again. Other activities provided for

the young people included archery, orienteering, paintball, sports, abseiling, traversing, caving, kayaking…the list goes on! When you take 200 + young people away you expect there might be problems – but the reality was that there were few. The Army Cadet Force worked to strict rules and regulations. They have their own ranking system and adhere to recognising seniority. Their days are guided and planned. It all sounds quite tough and restrictive but I have to say that the young folk had a ball. Despite lack of sleep, quite challenging activities – the smiles told you what a fantastic time they were having. Christianity has its own set of rules. Some of you will recognise the Ten Commandments found in Exodus and Deuteronomy. But Jesus gave an allencompassing commandment in reply to the Sadducees who demanded to know which was the greatest commandment? Jesus replied, “The most important one is this: ‘Listen, Israel! The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second most important commandment is this: ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself.’ There is no other commandment more important than these two.” (Mark 12:29-31) Far

from being restrictive these commandments offer us a guide for life that will bring much happiness. Living a life where you love God and your neighbour means living a life of love – what could be better? It is when people are selfish, thinking only of themselves that people suffer. But when we care for each other and when we consider the repercussions of our actions or make conscious decisions that benefit others then we create a world that God smiles at. And a world that has many people smiling.

The commandment to love God and to love your neighbour is a circular commandment. If you do one then you cannot avoid doing the other. What better rule to live your life by: love God, love your neighbour.

So far we have had the best of summers. The Scottish Open golf championship at Castle Stuart was broadcast to many parts of the globe - as was the Open at Muirfield. As the home of golf, Scotland is a magnet for players from all over the world, and this is a vital part of the tourism industry. The Ryder Cup at Gleneagles next year will be a further marvellous promotion of our excellent courses - around 600 of them in the country. Fiona, Natasha and I will holiday in the Highlands once again this year. It is easy to take for granted what's on our own doorstep. So we will try in this, the “Year of Natural Scotland”, to put that right. Picnic at Lochindorb, visits to Landmark - ideal for children and to beaches at Lossie, Nairn and Findhorn; Picking fruit at Wester Hardmuir - with its excellent playpark for the wee one; the best off road cycling in the country, and checking out the polar bear and tiger cubs at the Highland wildlife park; visiting local distilleries and sampling the product ( for me anyway!) - and walking amidst some of the finest scenery in the world. We also like to frequent the local independent small shops in Grantown Nairn, Forres, Tomintoul and so on. The supermarkets can look after themselves. But you won’t get horsemeat from a local butcher! I suspect though that the sunshine will not last the whole summer - we are not, after all, the med. There is a saying that the grass is always greener somewhere else. But in Scotland’s case this is not so: Our grass will always be the greenest. That is why we have the best golf courses in the world!

Spectacular scenery & wildlife brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Highlands every year. Our natural environment is such a huge asset that it is essential to care for. I was grateful this month to have the opportunity to visit both the Woodland Trust's Balmacaan forest above Drum, and the Inverness Beekeepers Apiary in Balloch who are both doing their bit. Both organisations are under pressure from the decline in woodland and bee population, both have been campaigning hard to protect the local environment in their own way, and both must be congratulated for their efforts. The Woodland Trust helps protect and create native woodland, and promotes its own woods as places for visitors to enjoy and value. There is no better example of that than at Balmacaan which hosts some fine examples of native woodland. The walk up into the wood has astounding views of Loch Ness and is a historically significant site during the Jacobean Rebellion. Likewise the Beekeepers association has worked hard to educate its members in good practice and the art of beekeeping – with twelve of members recently passing the Basic Beemaster exam. Many attribute the declining population to the use of pesticides and the removal of wildflower meadows; and the UK Government is undertaking an urgent review into the causes of the decline. I enjoyed both visits very much, and wish both organisations every success. Danny Alexander MP

Dreaming of... River Cruising

River Cruising is a part of the travel market growing in popularity each year. For centuries people have travelled Europe’s mighty rivers and waterways to trade, explore and sometimes conquer! Steeped in history and culture, flowing through stunning scenery, they form natural links connecting the continent’s greatest and most beautiful towns and cities, from the medieval to the modern. You can cruise on the majestic Rhine and Danube – Europe’s essential arteries studded by atmospheric cities like Koblenz and Vienna. Standing guard you will see astonishing fairytale castles whilst learning about mythical legends, historic strife and triumph. You can be on the magical, meandering Moselle with its impossibly steep, riverside vineyards and lesser known, yet equally beautiful River Main, twisting through Germany’s rural heart. The Elbe, meandering through Saxon Switzerland, connects historic Berlin and baroque Dresden, whilst in France, the Rhone flows majestically from almost the Burgundy vineyards to Avignon and van Gogh’s Arles, in the heart of sun-kissed Provence. River Cruising has the huge advantage like Ocean Cruising that you unpack your case only once into your cabin, and your cabin moves around with you all the time. You can leave your belongings in the care and security of the ship’s company while you go ashore to see the sights, probably having had a lecture on them before arriving at that particular place. Another good part of the world for River Cruising is in Vietnam and Cambodia, and indeed it is a very effective way of seeing much of these countries properly. Imagine boarding your River boat at Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and moving up the Mekong River through Phnom Penh, to Siem Reap and ultimately Angkor Wat. This trip takes 14nts from the UK, and takes in a 2nt stay in Saigon, and a Mekong River Cruise through Cai Be, Sa Dec, Tan Chau, Phnom Penh, Chong Koh, Kampong Chhnang, Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. Whatever the budget there is a River Cruise for you, and many are very good value for money as long as they are purchased from a trustworthy source.

Wedding Feature

It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.

“Many venues have a marquee in their garden, but how many have a garden in their marquee…?”
