PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Being a presence I wrote last year about my experiences at my first annual camp acting as Chaplain (Padre) to the 2nd Battalion Highlanders Army Cadet Force at their annual camp. I have just returned from my second camp and I had a great time. My body clock is still adjusting. Reveille at camp is 6.45am which is a wee bit earlier than I am used to! I am always amazed at how eager the cadets are to get up and get on with the day’s activities. When I was a teenager the summer holidays were full of long lies and lazy days. Not so for the army cadets – their days being early and finish late. I have pondered over the role of Padre and what it is that we do when we are at camp. Apart from the very practical role of running the ‘bank’ what we do is lurk with intent. We are there. And we are ready to help when and where we are wanted. And we are there for both the cadets, the adult volunteers and the staff that help run the camp. My fellow Padre and I had a good chat one evening about the conversation that was

going on around us – we were in the Mess on our last evening sharing in the banter among the adults. The conversation, as it often did when we were about, turned to the church and our beliefs. My colleague said ‘this conversation wouldn’t happen if we were not here.’ And he was right. Our presence brought with it the opening for conversation about faith to take place. And what a wonderful opportunity to fulfil our commission as disciples of Christ. As we lurked with intent we brought God’s presence to the fore. Jesus, when he sent out the seventy two, said “When you enter a house, first say, “Peace to this house.” If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.” (Luke 10:5-7 NIV) That’s a great description of lurking with intent! Being a presence. At camp we help support young people and the adults in whatever

way is needed. That might be driving the minibus, comforting a homesick young person, talking with adults about problems they have left at home, encouraging a cadet who didn’t get the promotion they thought they deserved, managing the bank, handing out gummy bears… Lurking with intent. Being a presence. So often this is what Jesus did. He spent time with people. It wasn’t all miracles and great speeches. He brought the presence of God into the world. And that is what we in the church should be doing to. Lurking with intent. Being a presence. We can all do that. I look forward to next year’s annual camp and the other opportunities I will have to spend time with the battalion. Lurking and being. Every blessing this autumn.

PARLIAMENT BLOG Both the spotlight and the sun have shone on Scotland this summer. We holidayed in Lewis - or "Struay" as our six year old daughter called it, the home of Katie Morag! In the sunlight, the beaches there, as in Nairn, Lossie and along the Moray coast, rival those anywhere. This year, Scotland has risen to the challenge of hosting the Commonwealth Games, the Homecoming and Bannockburn Live and shortly, the Ryder Cup. But sadly, some people are deterred from coming to Scotland, by the UK tax on travel, Air Passenger Duty, the highest in the western world. Why? Because we in Scotland cannot decide our own tax policy. On September 18th we have a chance to claim what people in most other countries take for granted: The right to decide and determine our own affairs and accept the responsibility that comes with it. And to be a friendly country to our neighbours and the rest of the world.

I’m fortunate that as a Highland MP there has always been plenty to be proud of. But never before have we had quite so many of our Highland sportsmen and women making an impression on the world stage. Following the success of the 2012 Olympics in London, I was delighted to be at the opening of the Commonwealth Games last month. And I was privileged to be there to cheer on Stephanie Inglis in the judo. But I was not the only Highlander to travel to Glasgow to be there. It’s funny who you meet sometimes. But when I was out and about speaking to people in Milton of Leys, in July, I bumped into someone who was sitting just behind me! They were as excited as me to see Stephanie perform so well and bring a silver medal back to Inverness. As well as judo, Highland athletes competed in swimming, athletics, cycling, hockey, shooting and squash. I know that the whole of the Highlands is as proud as I am of them and their achievements.

Do you know the man Christ Jesus as your Lord and Saviour? Are your sins washed away by the blood of His Sacrifice on Calvary’s cross? Have you received Him and is He your hiding place, your justification and righteousness before God the Father? For God hath made Him to be sin for us, He who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. The world says seeing is believing, but by faith in God’s Son believing is seeing.

My Wedding at Innes House Sheryl Milligan & Sean Dyer – 9th August 2014

Sheryl Milligan gives us an insight into her recent wedding at Innes House: Where did you meet? Sean and I met in the Abbey Arms in Kinloss, exactly 2 years to the day before we got married; a complete coincidence as we hadn’t realised it when we booked the wedding. Why Innes House? We chose Innes House because of its uniqueness. As they say in their brochure, there is an actual garden in their marquee! We wanted to get married outside because it was a breathtakingly beautiful setting for a wedding. The night before? Sean spent the night at my parent’s house with his wedding party and Uncles having a few drinks. We girls all stopped at Innes House for drinks and nibbles, as we were getting ready from there the following morning. Your ceremony? We wanted a religious Christian service, and our minister brought just the right amount of humour to it, settling both our nerves.

My Wife and I… I was quite nervous about Sean's speech but it was perfect. His words about me were beautiful and touched my heart; there wasn't a dry eye in the room. He paid my parents the credit they were due and got way more laughs than he expected. …and your food? We choose our menu based on our favourite foods, and we had to be rolled out of the tasting at the 1629 restaurant! On the day it was presented beautifully and enjoyed by all. Any star performers? The staff at Innes couldn’t do enough for us, but our photographer, John Baikie was absolutely fantastic; he risked life and limb up on the roof of the Innes tower to get the perfect sunset shot that he promised. Party Time… Our day was made complete by our perfect party. We had just the right music mix from our band and disco. The photo-booth was a big hit with the guests and it was all topped off with an amazing firework display. It hasn't quite sunk in yet that we are now Mr and Mrs Dyer. We are still sky high after the wedding of our dreams!

INNES HOUSE

Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.

“Many venues have a marquee in their garden, but how many have a garden in their marquee…?”
