The Editor

As the festive season draws near we are encouraged to spare a thought for our neighbours or people that live on their own but of course people living on the own are not just on their own at Christmas. A kind word, a pint of milk or a cup of tea shared can brighten anybody’s day and we can actually do this at any time of the year. As someone once said:

Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.

Words by the Wayside “...that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. (Romans 3:19)

Reader, God did not give the Ten Commandments as a means of approach and acceptance with Him if you kept them, but to show you that you cannot keep them, because you are a sinner and separated by your sins from Him. You have a need of a Saviour, that your sins might be washed away. All have sinned, all need the Saviour which is Christ the Lord. He alone is the way, the truth and the life the only way back to God for you. Do you know the Lord Jesus as your Saviour?

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings I was brought up as part of a family of four in the north-east of Scotland. Unlike many in the church family, I wasn’t brought up in a Christian home. As I look back, I realise I didn’t really experience a true sense of love when I was growing up. And the situations that developed because of drink in the family home fuelled an insecurity within me. As I entered my teenage years, it wasn’t long before I started to push the boundaries. Whether through disobeying my parents within the home, misbehaving at school, or getting up to mischief with friends, trouble was never far away. My teenage experience was not unlike many in my generation. By the age of sixteen I was getting drunk every weekend, and my life revolved around Friday nights. Sexual relationships were as common, and frequent drug use followed suit. My life as they say was a recipe for disaster. By the time I reached the age of 20, I had lost count of the wrong things I had done. I had many regrets, and was carrying a lot of guilt. So much so in fact, that many nights I would cry myself to sleep. Despite my heavy use of cannabis, many nights I couldn’t get to sleep because my conscience was so troubled.

I had been working at a fish processing factory in Peterhead for a few months when a co-worker there invited me to come along to a‘gospel service’ the following Sunday evening, I had no problems saying yes. As I entered the church meeting that night, a lasting impression was made on me by the family seated beside us. They welcomed me as if they had always known me, and it gave me a feeling of acceptance and belonging. The minister stood up to speak. He spoke that night about how each person is born a ‘sinner,’ meaning we have all done and said things that are wrong. Then he explained that the reason for Jesus Christ coming to earth and dying on the cross was to take the punishment for our sin. And because He did this we have the opportunity of forgiveness and freedom from sin. In realising for the first time what Jesus had done for me I was blown away. I’ve often said since that before that moment, it was like I had been trying to piece together the puzzle of life without having the picture on the box to guide me. In a moment, a divine moment, my spiritual eyes were opened. I realised that I needed to ask Jesus to forgive me for the sin in my life. And that I needed to thank Him for

what He had done for me. And this is what I did soon after. From that night, He began to change me from the inside out. It literally felt like the slate had been wiped clean. I’d been forgiven. Many things in my life began to change. The desire for drugs and alcohol was supernaturally taken away. The way I spoke, thought and acted changed drastically. And the desire for ‘christian’ things quickly became everything to me. Are you carrying a weight of guilt and shame? You can find peace and forgiveness through Jesus, just as I did. You might think you don’t deserve such a thing, but realise that it’s the desire of God to forgive you, to give you salvation. “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” - Romans 5:8

(Psalm 86:5)

Reader, it is those who willingly choose the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour through repentance of their sins and faith in His atoning death, that He willingly bestows salvation upon. In God’s Family there are no conscripts; all have called upon God for salvation through Jesus Christ His Son. You must receive Him for yourself. Genuine repentance and salvation will always have a turning away from sin. All who call upon the name of The Lord shall be saved. Are you saved?

TOM ALSO BLOGS AS ‘THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER’. Well it has been a stormy and beautiful autumn hasn’t it?! I love the autumn colours and have spent several happy days out with my dog, Solly, enjoying the local hills and forests. I’m also working on three very different and very exciting garden designs at the moment. Now is a great time of year for getting the garden sorted ahead of spring, and is the perfect time for getting trees and shrubs planted. My own garden continues to progress, and I’ve been distracted somewhat by putting together some elaborate bird feeders that now hang outside my kitchen window, giving me a great view of any peckish, feathered friends that drop by. There are a number of jobs to be getting on with in the garden in December. Here are a few DO’s and DON’Ts:

DO use your lawnmower to collect and chop up leaves. Then you can make a leaf-mould pile, or you can put some on your compost. DO plant trees! Now is the best and most effective time to plant trees because you can plant them ‘bare root’ while they are dormant. If you have to prune Birches or Acers, now is the time to do it, before the sap starts rising. Birches in particular do not look good after pruning, and take a couple of years to recover a natural looking form.

DO clean your garden tools, sharpen blades, and take the opportunity to clean and tidy your shed and greenhouse. DO get your garden machinery serviced, this will help ensure it lasts a long time. DON’T forget to keep your bird feeders full, and if you can, make sure there is some water available in a bird bath or shallow pond. DON’T leave your lawnmower sitting all winter with fuel in it. DON’T fertilise your plants or grass. Most plants are having a rest at this time of year – leave them to it! DON’T forget to ensure loose fence panels, gates and empty plant pots are all repaired or secure. In fact look out for anything that might get blown away by winter storms! DON’T forget about your garden until the spring. If you’ve projects that need doing, now is the time to get professionals in to help out before their spring-time diaries fill up!

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

What can we possibly be usefully doing in December? With nothing much growing, and the ground sometimes pretty solid, often frosty. It’s when we take our heavy American golf course aerators out and about to aerate lawns. We do hollow-core tining, where the machine removes thousands of plugs from the ground. Golf courses are doing this too at this time not surprisingly. Aerating the ground is multi-beneficial as it allows air into the ground, helps with drainage, and thins-out the root zone which becomes compacted and choked over time. This is mainly about moss control in this part of the world ! You can do this with a garden fork too, but not as effectively obviously as with a machine which actually removes a core of material. I’ve included a picture of our aerator, a formidable piece of kit, and not available in B&Q or at your local garden centre!

Just a reminder; the leaves are all off now, and if they are still in drifts on your grass, it’s a very good idea to lift them. Several weeks without light and air under a pile of leaves is likely to kill/seriously damage a patch of grass. Alastair Watt
