Words by the Wayside โ Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his richesโ ฆโ (Psalm 52:7)

Reader, is this you? What good is anything, if you know not the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour? All for you is vanity and vexation of spirit. What if you gain the whole world and yet lose your own soul? While you are living in pleasure you are dead in trespasses and in sins, without God and without hope in this world, and yet Jesus Christ died for you. Eternity where?

EVERYTHING TO KEEP YOU COMFORTABLE THIS WINTER

I had been hearing lots of “chatter about Haikus, so I thought that I would check it out for myself. First - a definition:

Standard with variable angle lift & tilt on seat lift.

haiku [( heye -kooh)]

A form of Japanese poetry. A haiku expresses a single feeling or impression and contains three unrhymed lines of five, seven and five syllables respectively.

Supplied as standard in maximum tilt lowest lift position but may easily be adjusted to achieve higher flatter lift or very high virtually flat lift. Top quality British action stringently tested to ensure product strength, rigidity, safety & durability.

Here’s one called February:

Month of dancing days Hugs, kisses and lots of cards Love lives forever

Single motor tilt-in space action maintains initial sit position throughoutrecline, eliminates friction & shear forces whilst spreading body weight over a wider area to minimise pressure points.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings I love the sea, whether it is calm or totally wild, I go to the sea to mess about with the kids and I go there when I need to think things through. It gives me peace and energy and it inspires me and fills me with wonder all at the same time. It has helped me to grow as a Christian because it has helped the bible to make sense at difficult times. There is a verse in the bible written by the apostle Paul after he was shipwrecked in a massive storm. All through the storm Paul knew God’s peace, everyone else on board lost the plot and panicked, some were even prepared to kill others on board to save themselves, but Paul was at peace, he listened to God and kept everyone calm and so they were all saved. He wrote about the experience to help us see the difference that God makes in our lives when we trust in Him entirely. ‘Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.’ Ephesians 4 v 14 When I first read this, the picture of the powerful and turbulent sea was so clear to me because my life was chaotic -

whatever I did or tried, it never managed to satisfy me for long, so I looked for the next thing or wanted more of it until it became an unhealthy habit, my life became a soap opera, living in the moment, trying whatever made sense at the time to fix it - a new job, a new place to live, a new house, a new car, a new relationship, diet, exercise, drink…..on it went. Living this way, I hurt people and damaged myself, and in that chaos, I craved stability, I wanted something secure, that made sense and that satisfied for longer than a week! And this verse showed me exactly what was happening to me, tossed back and forth, blown here and there, my life was caught in a storm as I followed the latest greatest thing on TV or the internet or what my friends were doing. The next verse says ‘Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the head, that is, Christ.’ This was what I wanted – to grow up, to know the truth in all things, to see things as they really are, what has value and what doesn’t and I also wanted to know love – that I was loved and to be able to love – because neither of these was possible because of the hurt and

damage I had caused. This verse told me that if Jesus was at the head of my life then all this was possible. So, I wanted to know more and I found out that by saying sorry to Jesus, I could be forgiven for all the hurt I had caused, and by trusting in Him, He would help me see things more clearly, and do things differently – His way. So, I said sorry and asked Jesus to help me and Jesus has been as real to me as these two verses about the sea promised He would be. I still get things wrong and life is still tough, but through it all I know God’s peace because I am forgiven and He uses the mistakes I make to show me better ways to live. He promises the same for everyone who asks for His forgiveness and help. The bible is the lighthouse to guide you through the stormy sea to the solid rock of Jesus.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Complete Lawn Renovation – a project this year ? Many of you will, in your darkest moments, consider giving up on your lawn… too far gone ….. wouldn’t know where to start ….. best to get it dug up and put down a new lawn ! Replacing a lawn can be very expensive, however, whether you plan to replace it with a new lawn or even slabs or gravel. Consider this, a worn-out lawn can actually be renovated in situ at a fraction of the cost of removing and replacing the whole thing. I have included here a Before and After picture taken just a few weeks apart. I suggest there are 4 stages in the process, and you could either try this yourself, probably with some hired machines, or get some help (probably best as you have to live with the results for years to come).

1.

Hollow tine Aeration removes thousands of cores, reducing compaction and allowing air to move in the root zone, encouraging microbial activity and root development.

2. Severe Scarification removes as much thatch as possible, allowing the seed to find the soil surface which always aids germination. Once the thatch has been removed it has to be cleaned off the surface by either raking or sweeping, using a leaf sweeper.

BEFORE

3.

Seeding should be applied at a rate of 20-25gms per m². The seed, being on the soil surface, puts it in direct contact with the material that will help it germinate; it is, however, open to the elements and can be disrupted by heavy winds and birds’ feasting.

4.

Top Dressing covers the seed. Many think top dressing should be a sandy soil mix. We actually use a lawn compost, manufactured from recycled green waste and, therefore, environmentally friendly. It contains nutrient to assist existing grass and promote good germination from the seed and aids good microbial activity. This is applied at 2kg per m². All that’s required now is regular watering until the seed germinates (regular rainfall isn’t usually a problem in these parts). The best time to tackle this is June-Sept in Scotland, and that means starting planning now for your new lawn this summer. At around £2 per m2 to renovate, compared with around £12 per m2 to replace, it really is worth considering.

THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER, HAVING PREVIOUSLY RUN HIS OWN COMMERCIAL GARDENING BUSINESS FOR TWELVE YEARS.

TOM ALSO BLOGS AS THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER. February can feel like the harshest of winter months, and we have certainly already received enough cold weather in January, but spring is around the corner now and there are a number of jobs that can be done now to help keep on top of the garden before the spring growth commences. One of the trickier jobs that can be managed now is pruning Wisteria, but you needn’t be too scared of this. Pruning involves cutting back summer side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds. I’m going to elaborate on this in my blog, where I will give some more detailed instructions for this. Here are some other tasks that could or should be done in the garden in February:

DO prune summer-flowering Clematis before they start growing actively. DO renovate Beech hedges that need more robust pruning. DO plant bare root shrubs and trees. DO prune Winter Jasmine after it has flowered. DO take down any tired looking dead seed-heads that you have left over the winter. DO cut back deciduous grasses before fresh growth begins. DO prune/trim winter-flowering shrubs such as Mahonia japonica and Viburnum tinus after they have flowered. DO dead-head winter bedding as it can encourage some species to flower again. DO prune apple and pear trees.

20

DON’T forget to make sure all your machines are all serviced ahead of the spring. DON’T work heavy soils that are wet, wait till they have dried out. DON’T be tempted to start sowing lots of seeds in the greenhouse, they may well just become weak and spindly due to lack of light. DON’T forget to keep putting bird food out, and if possible keeping some water available for birds to drink from and bathe in. DON’T forget to use any slightly warmer days to start tackling moss build-up on hard surfaces. March is a busy month in the garden, with fair amounts of pruning to do, so get all and any tidying done that you can in February. I’ll be back next month, and in the meantime I’ll be getting on with all these jobs in my own garden!

Words by the Wayside “...He (Jesus Christ) is able to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him...” (Hebrews 7:25)

Reader, The Lord Jesus Christ is able to save you if you come. He is able to save you if you come unto God. He is able to save you if you come unto God by Him. He is able to save you to the uttermost. He is able to save to the uttermost because He ever liveth to make intercession for His people. Do you know Him as your God and your Saviour?
