For many, the prospect of a New Year can be daunting sometimes but I recently came across this quote which I quite liked:
The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. Gilbert K. Chesterton

Words by the Wayside “Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord: for men abhorred the offering of the Lord.” (1st Samuel 2:17)
Reader, God so loved you, that He offered up on Calvary’s Cross His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, that if you would believe on Him, you should not perish. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn you, but that you through Him might be saved. Refuse no longer God’s offering for your sins. Jesus Christ can make you whole, He is The Gift of God.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings God Knows I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown”. And he replied, “go into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.” King George VI concluded his Christmas Day broadcast in 1939 with these words of encouragement from the poem “God Knows” by Minnie Louise Haskins. Britain had recently gone to war with Germany and uncertainty reigned in the hearts and minds of the people. Today, as we go into 2018, the world is very different but no less frightening. The political and economical turmoil, the effects of climate change, the seemingly constant threat of terrorism and the general moral decline means that we too face an uncertain future. As a Christian it comes as no surprise that the world is as it is. Whilst many people try to tell us that things are getting better and better, it is obvious that that’s not the case. The Bible
gives us a clear explanation of the condition of the world, a world that is under the hand of God. We don’t always understand what is going on, or why, but as the Apostle Paul said, “we live by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7). This means that we live our lives based on the word of God, and not from what we see on TV or on social media. Because of my faith in Jesus I have confidence in God’s plan for this world. As we go into 2018 we will all have good days and bad days - God doesn’t promise that life will be free of troubles, but he does promise that he’ll be with us in the good times and the bad. And what could be better than taking the almighty hand of God that is offered to us? With Him there is safety, rest and peace. What greater comfort can you have than knowing that his dear son has died for you and gone ahead to prepare a place for you? Yes, in this life we can eat, drink and be merry but these pleasures fade, they do not last. They can’t compare to the good news we hear about in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only

Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”. Accepting this promise was the most important decision that I ever made. It has meant that no matter what life throws at me, I have the comfort and reassurance of knowing that Jesus is with me. It also means that my hope is not focussed on life in this world but on the one to come. Knowing that God is in control of my life, and indeed the whole world, means that I can lean on Him, trusting that He works for the good of those who love Him. None of us know what the future holds – but God knows – and we can be sure that, if we put our trust in Him, he will lead and direct us as we go into the unknown.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP
2013
GreenThumb, About us and looking towards the New Year. Our small team of 4, based here in the Moray Firth, will have a busy year ahead as we will have over 1,100 regular customers presenting us with their lawn problems. Sounds a lot, but we are a pretty small franchise up here though. GreenThumb across the UK will have 500,000 customers this year! As we will be providing local monthly updates as the season unfolds through the year again in this magazine, we thought it might be nice to let you see where we are based.
Although we don’t know exactly what the weather will throw at us this season, we have a fair idea what we will be asked to tackle. Highlights will likely include:
Winter Months Moss and thatch; we will be aerating and scarifying all hours of the day to get through everybody before the Spring Weed and Feed Treatments start. Also look out for leatherjackets emerging (crane fly grubs) and eating lawn roots, sometimes causing devastation.
Spring Months Weed kiill and Spring fertiliser; we will want some decent weather to get lawns off to a good start. Spring 2017 was lovely, but a nice Spring has been a rarity recently..
Summer Months Mowing; best practice is never cut shorter than 1”. Mowing too close is the most destructive thing you can do to a lawn (usually a man-thing) and in particular encourages moss to flourish! June is when we will likely see the first signs of Red Thread fungal disease damage (wet summers are the worst). We’ve had 2 wet Summers in a row now.
Autumn Months Moss control treatments and winter feeds; we will want to get all our customers’ lawns ready for next winter, and most will want to think about aerating and scarifying outwith the growing season, either themselves or using us and our machines. Alastair Watt
For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £15 per treatment, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairn and cover the whole Moray Firth area. Reader, what have you done with Jesus 10:18 which is called Christ? Do you say, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing? And yet do you not know if you reject the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, you are wretched, and miserable and poor and blind and naked. It is appointed unto you once to die and after this your judgment: what will you do with Jesus?

DON’T prune Plum and Cherry trees at this time of year. Pruning puts them at risk of Silverleaf disease, so they should be pruned mid-summer. DON’T fertilize your plants in your garden or inside your house at this time of year. Most plants are having a rest at the moment, and you really don’t want to be encouraging tender new growth. DON’T cut back any herbaceous perennials that have attractive seed heads left on them. Many also use their old foliage to protect the crown of the plant over the winter, so whilst there are some plants that do need cutting back, it is not right for every plant.

TOM ALSO BLOGS AS THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER. We’re right in the middle of winter now, yet despite this there is a lot we can be doing in the garden at the moment. Not only is it a good excuse to get a bit of exercise outside, but some work done in the garden now can really reap rewards once spring arrives. I created a number of new beds in my back garden this year and at the moment I am taking the opportunity to really make sure there are no remnants of weeds in there waiting to burst into life in a few months. I’m also cutting neat edges in the beds and clearing the last of any debris like dead leaves and twigs out. Here are some other jobs to be getting on with in the garden in January:
DO prune Apple and Pear trees. This needn’t be an intimidating job, check out my blog for some step-by-step instructions for pruning small trees. Remember, the final form of an Apple tree should look a bit like a bowl, and a Pear tree should resemble the shape of a Champagne flute. A blackbird should be able to happily fly between the branches of both once you have finished. DO keep the birds fed. Put out a variety of feed if you can, and try to make some water available. I have a ‘pond’ in a Belfast sink which has various stones around and within it to allow birds to use it as birdbath. I free the pond of any ice each morning. DO think about new plans for your garden. Now is the perfect time for new landscaping jobs such as building your own compost heap, or getting help with new designs or

At this time of year, keep an eye out for emerging bulbs and enthusiastic perennials coming back to life. It can get a bit dreary at this time of year and it is always nice to be reminded of the spring and summer riot of emerging life that is just round the corner!
