Words by the Wayside “...a friend of... sinners! (Luke 7:34)
Reader, The Lord Jesus loves the sinner but hates the sin. The Saviour is willing and able to save, but the sinner must acknowledge their sin. It is through repentance toward God and faith in The Lord Jesus Christ that men and women are cleansed from their sins and justified in God’s sight. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, Christ died for the ungodly, there is none righteous, no, not one. Your sins, which are many, He alone can take away.

Civil Rights is in the news at the moment and is something close to my heart. I have never quite understood why the colour of one’s skin or the country of one’s birth should dictate how one is treated. Here is a poem by Langston Hughes, US Civil Rights activist (1902-1967) a contemporary of Martin Luther King.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Pentecost – How can I get it?
This broken, warring, fractured world is living on the wrong side of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and it is the task of the Church of Jesus Christ to tell the world that there are answers to all the pain, suffering, sadness and tragedy. The world would not listen to the apostles – the world would not even listen to Jesus –but it remains our task to proclaim and share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Between the cross and the resurrection, the disciples were groping in the darkness. Is that not where many are today? As sin and evil tower over people, they feel hopeless, helpless and inadequate. Men continue to search for some man-made, humanistic, secular solution. How many struggle in the morass of fear and confusion? Eleven disappointed men were
transformed by the risen and living Jesus when He anointed and equipped them for the work to which they have been called and trained. They were deserters, and they knew it. These trembling followers of Jesus came from this lowest despair, to become men with a courage and confidence that was remarkable, because it was supernatural, flowing from God. That withdrawn, dejected bunch became the nucleus of the greatest society this earth has ever seen – the Body of Christ – the Church of the living God. Down through the past two thousand years, men and women have taken the message of Jesus Christ around the world. You cannot explain this away on natural or psychological grounds. God’s answer and God’s solution has not changed. The Resurrection of Jesus, and Pentecost, dealt with the despair and

shame in the hearts and minds of the disciples. We approach another Pentecost. Pentecost is more than a season – and even more than an experience. Pentecost saw 120 disciples baptised with the power of God. It was not a sprinkling. They were immersed in, and saturated with, the Spirit of God. Jesus Christ did this. After Pentecost, we never again hear of negative emotions flowing from the hearts and mouths of these men and women. This same supernatural, miraculous power is available today. It is for service and worship – not for self. How can I get it? Ask Jesus. Sandy Shaw Pastor of Nairn Christian Fellowship

inter has taken its time to leave this year but by May we are approaching the time of year when there is a massive growth spurt put on by our garden plants and lawns. This period of rapid growth only actually lasts six to eight weeks, and normally kicks in some time between the start of May and mid-June. Don’t expect to make huge amounts of progress in your garden during this time, and there are a few techniques that will help you keep on top of the garden during this part of the year.
Grass cutting is the other labour-intensive job that needs doing in the garden, but again you can have a pragmatic approach towards this. Once grass is growing rapidly, if you want a pristine lawn you could be mowing as regularly as twice per week. However, the golden rule is not to leave it any longer than once every two weeks. During the period of vigorous growth this will mean that your grass gets a little long between cuts, but the key is to stop weeds in the lawn setting seed. If you do let weeds flower and seed, your lawn will deteriorate more quickly as the more aggressive weeds gradually out-compete the grass plants. If you have time, weekly cuts are a happy compromise. Hedge cutting can be timed to get the best results from your efforts. Hedges such as Ligustrum spp. (Privet) and Buxus sempervirens (Box) should receive the first of their three cuts some time in May, but be guided by how much growth there has been – does it look messy or not? If you are yet to plant a hedge, consider the fact that the likes of Fagus sylvatica (Beech), Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) and Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn) only need one cut per year, in late summer. Remember, when trimming hedges always make sure you check for birds’ nests first.
IF YOU WANT TO KEEP UP-TO-DATE WITH TIPS AND ADVICE Weeding is something a lot of people do not enjoy, but it need not be backbreaking work. The tools for the job here are a hoe, a stone rake and ideally a hand-fork. You do not need to physically remove every weed that you come across, and whilst ideally you will be able to uproot weeds with their roots and all, it does not matter if you cannot do this. The trick is regular weeding, as if you keep on cutting weeds in half and turning them into the soil, they do not get a chance to take hold. There are of course more stubborn weeds such as Aegopodium podagraria (Ground Elder/Bishopsweed) and Elymus repens (Couch Grass), but regular hoeing and turning will weaken even these imposters. Weeds over about 3cm in height I do remove, and once you have weeded a section of bed, take the stone rake to it to further disturb the soil surface and neaten the appearance.
TILL NEXT MONTH THEN,
HAPPY MOUNTAIN GARDENING!

Create and store your own solar energy The Tesla Energy Powerwall 2 stores up to 13.5 kWh of excess solar energy during daylight hours when your home electricity usage is low, then discharges in the evening during those high usage/peak times saving you money. The Powerwall can be installed with new Solar PV systems or can be retrofitted to existing PV systems. A home battery system protects homeowners from future electricity price increases and reduce reliance on the national grid.
