Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Most people reading this article will be familiar with the famous photograph, Lunch atop a Skyscraper, taken in New York City in 1932 (look it up on Google Images if not!). It shows eleven men sitting on a girder eating, smoking and reading, during the building of the Rockefeller Centre, their legs dangling in fresh air some 800 feet above the streets below. They seem to be at complete ease, apparently oblivious to their terrifying location. Even though it was probably a posed picture, the reality was that this was indeed their working environment, and many people lost their lives in the construction of these gigantic skyscrapers. Sir Alex Ferguson kept a copy of this picture on the wall in his office and used it to inspire his players about the value of teamwork. Conveniently, there are eleven men sitting on the girder, the same number as there is in a football team. Manchester United players weren’t ever going to be in such potentially-fatal situations in the course of a mere football match, but Sir Alex wanted to instil in his players a sense of mutual dependence, success or failure hinging on every man watching out for one another, pulling his weight, and helping one another to do the job they are being paid to do. The recent World Cup finals in Russia saw

France triumph in the end and be declared world champions again. No team ever wins anything without a good work ethic and without a sense of interdependence. The strikers need to be scoring goals up front, while trusting the defenders to keep their opponents out at the back. At the same time they know that neither of them are likely to åwin the game based on their own skills alone if the goalkeeper behind them is carelessly allowing the ball to slip through his fingers into the net. That same strength of teamwork was wonderfully in evidence as the world held its breath and prayed for the successful rescue of another football team – the young lads and their coach trapped in a cave in Thailand with time, opportunity and oxygen fast running out. What skill and dedication was shown by the rescuers as they battled against the overwhelming odds to achieve the nearlyimpossible escape. Sadly, the mission cost one man his life as he sacrificed his own safety for the sake of thirteen young strangers – a tragic loss for him and his family, yet not enough to prevent the rest of the rescue-team from seeing their mission through to the miraculous end. I’d love to think the same sense of mutual dependence and personal commitment is to be found in our churches. On an

ordinary day in present-day Scotland, it is unlikely that any of us will be asked to make the ultimate sacrifice. In other places, as many as two hundred countries throughout the world, persecution and death are commonplace for Christian believers. Every Sunday somebody dies in a church in Nigeria at the hands of militant terrorists, yet every week the faithful believers continue to meet there to worship Jesus, bonded together in a determination to live for him and to serve as part of his team on earth. The challenges we face here are minor in comparison, though we all know our present liberties cannot be taken for granted. May the Lord help us to keep the faith and to fight the good fight, as a Christian team should – loving and supporting one another, holding closely to our Manager’s every instruction, and following our Captain as he leads his heaven-bound team of millions and millions, (though there’s still room for more on this team!), to ultimate victory and to eternal glory. SpotLIGHT Garden

Brought to you by:

A Dry Summer this Year - at Last - and Now the Grass is Compacted ! The Beechgrove Garden and all the other gardening advice this last month will be about aerating the lawn now. At GreenThumb, this is what we’re doing too. Compacted ground prevents the take up of moisture, prevents air circulation and congests the root zone in the turf. All of these factors weaken the grass, it loses colour, growth slows right down and the lawn becomes prone to the invasion of MOSS and lichen over the Winter.

Aerator

For small lawns traditionally this has meant forking the ground, but for a larger lawn this is not really feasible. What we do, and the golf courses do this too, is run over the grass with a hollow-core tining machine (you can see from the picture this is a heavy piece of kit). It pulls thousands of cores out the ground in no time, and instantly eases the compaction. It’s probably the best thing we can do for our customers, as no-one has an aerator in their shed! However you tackle this, it is a key part of the battle in our climate to control MOSS. Oh - and remember to keep leaves off the grass through the autumn.

For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area. Adult Fiction

Adult Fiction

Days of Wonder By Keith Stuart Tom, single father to Hannah, is the manager of a tiny local theatre. On the same day each year, he and its colourful cast of part-time actors have staged a fantastical production just for his little girl, a moment of magic to make her childhood unforgettable. The very first production followed Hannah's diagnosis with a heart condition that both of them know will end her life early. And now, with Hannah a funny, tough girl of fifteen on the brink of adulthood, that time is coming.

Adult Non-Fiction

Ask An Astronaut By Tim Peake

This Is What Happened By Mick Herron

Twenty-six-year-old Maggie Barnes is someone you would never look at twice. Living alone in a month-to-month sublet in London, with no family but an estranged sister, no boyfriend or partner, and not much in the way of friends, Maggie is just the kind of person who could vanish from the face of the earth without anyone taking notice. Or just the kind of person MI5 needs to thwart an international plot that puts all of Britain at risk. One woman, one chance to be a hero: the trick is to stay alive.

Adult Non-Fiction

The French Revolution By Stephen Clarke

Tim’s personal guide to life in space, based on his historic Principia mission, and the thousands of questions he has been asked since his return to Earth. From training to launch, from his historic spacewalk to re-entry, he reveals for readers of all ages the cutting-edge science behind his ground-breaking experiments, and the wonders of day-to-day life on board the International Space Station.

Junior Fiction

The Last Chance Hotel By Nikki Thornton Seth is the oppressed kitchen boy at the remote Last Chance Hotel, owned by the nasty Bunn family. His only friend is his black cat, Nightshade. But when a strange gathering of magicians arrives for dinner, kindly Dr Thallomius is poisoned by Seth's special dessert. A locked-room murder investigation ensues - and Seth is the main suspect. The funny thing is, he's innocent. Can he solve the mystery and clear his name, especially when magic's afoot?

Legend has it that, in a few busy weeks in July 1789, a despotic king, his freeloading wife, and a horde of over-privileged aristocrats, were displaced and then humanely dispatched. In the ensuing years, we are told, France was heroically transformed into an idyll of Liberte, Egalite and Fraternite. In fact, as Stephen Clarke, author of 1000 Years of Annoying the French, argues in his informative and eye-opening account of the French Revolution, almost all of this is completely untrue. Junior Non-Fiction
