The US energy demand graphs show a swift trajectory. In recent months US electric utilities have nearly doubled their forecasts about the additional power they’ll need by 2028. Energy-hungry data centers, an abrupt resurgence in manufacturing driven by new federal laws, and millions of new electric vehicles being plugged in have all contributed to the situation.
The strain on America’s grids can only increase. Demand is likely to expand by 38,000 megawatts nationwide in the next five years, according to an analysis by the consulting firm Grid Strategies.
Based on public data and information, TheMinerMag has identified the energized bitcoin mining power capacities in North America operated by 20 public mining companies and two private operators. In total, these companies boasted an operating capacity of 5.42 GW across the U.S. and Canada with about 50% in Texas.
Electricity demand associated with U.S. cryptocurrency mining operations in the United States has grown very rapidly over the last several years.
Preliminary estimates suggest that annual electricity use from cryptocurrency mining now probably represents from 0.6% to a whopping 2.3% of U.S. electricity consumption.
The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) indicates in its latest long-term reliability assessment that “due to unique characteristics of the operations associated with cryptocurrency mining, potential growth can have a significant effect on demand and resource projections as well as system operations.”
As evidence, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has 41 gigawatts of requests for new cryptocurrency mining capacity, for which 9 GW of planning studies have been approved, according to NERC.
This additional electricity use has drawn the attention of policymakers and grid planners concerned about its effects on cost, reliability, and emissions.
Key challenges associated with tracking cryptocurrency mining energy use include the difficulty of identifying cryptocurrency mining activity among millions of U.S. end-use customers and the dynamic nature of the crypto market, where mining assets can be moved rapidly to areas with lower electricity prices.
The Digiconomist’s Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index estimated that one bitcoin transaction takes 1,449 kWh to complete, or the equivalent of approximately 50 days of power for the average US household. To put that into money terms, the average cost per kWh in the US is close to 12 cents.
Data centres also need power. At least 75 data centers have opened in Virginia since 2019. In California, electric vehicles could soon account for 10% of peak power demand. The need for power has never been greater.

NEWS IN BRIEF
SUNSYS HES L BATTERY STORAGE ENERGY SYSTEM FOR AMERICA’S MICROGRIDS
A Socomec has developed a compact version of its Sunsys HES L battery energy storage system (BESS), the Sunsys HES L Skid.
The new design improves overall efficiency, while reducing installation, transport and maintenance costs. The new power solution is suitable for powering EVs, commercial/industrial buildings and microgrids.
Socomec expects that BESS systems will play a ‘crucial’ role in grid stability and reliability as markets increase uptake of renewable energy sources.
Socomec’s new design allows for six battery cabinets to be daisy-chained per installation. All cabinets are shipped assembled and mounted to a skid system. This allows ease of transport between sites. Once in place, the BESSs need AC power (as required) and a reliable communication connection.
DELIVERING ADVANCED POWER WITH NEW BATTERY SYSTEMS FOR AMERICA
USA’S LARGEST STORAGE BATTERY MANUFACTURING FACILITY IS BEING DEVELOPED IN GEORGIA
Syensqo has broken ground on its future battery-grade polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) facility in Augusta, Georgia, USA. They were joined by Tom Perez, Senior Advisor and Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, and by Giulia Siccardo, Director of the Department of Energy’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains, as well as other representatives.
The critical support of the Biden-Harris Administration underscores the project’s significance for the U.S. electric battery market.
When complete, the site will be the largest PVDF production facility in North America, supplying the growing needs of domestic energy storage markets.
A significant milestone in Syensqo’s global electrification strategy, this facility will help create battery materials needed to unlock economy-wide electrification and electric vehicle (EV) adoption.
PVDF is a thermoplastic fluoropolymer which is used as a lithium-ion binder and separator coating in batteries. Specifically, the new site will produce Solef®, Syensqo’s signature PVDF product, which enables EVs to go farther on each charge.
South 8 Technologies has reported completing a successful demonstration of its LiGas liquified gas electrolyte with low-nickel, cobalt-free battery cells.
The LiGas electrolyte uses widely available non-toxic and noncorrosive gases which are held under pressure in a liquified state. The company said that this electrolyte can be contained in standard cylindrical cells.
The California-based company said that the LiGas electrolyte has already shown ‘excellent performance’ in conventional graphite/lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide (LNMO) cells.
Cold-weather performance is said to be enhanced using the LiGas electrolyte, which also supports faster charging than standard cells.
As part of the development process, South 8 demonstrated full compatibility with a 4.6 V commercial LNMO cathode. Energy retention at -20C (-4F) was measured at 96%. This compares to less than 5% retention for standard liquid LNMO electrolyte at the same temperature. Further testing showed 87% energy retention at -40C.
“LNMO is a future cathode material, promising the safety of LFP (lithium iron phosphate) and energy of NMC (nickel manganese cobalt),” said Cyrus Rustomji, Chief Science Officer at South 8. “The challenge has been the electrolyte: conventional solutions break down at LNMO’s high voltage. LiGas does not. LiGas gives excellent low temperature performance and greatly reduces thermal propagation.”
NEW LPO POWER MODULES DEVELOPED FOR USE ON US CONSTRUCTION SITES
Liebherr is marketing its Liduro Power Port (LPO), a new development from the electrified product program of Liebherr’s components product segment. The LPO mobile energy storage system enables the zero-emission operation and charging of hybrid or fully electric construction machines and cranes – in a range of power requirements – on construction sites. Designed to provide high power density and constant power output up to 160 kW, the system can help to supplement an insufficient grid connection or be used as an isolated grid when there’s no available grid connection, Liebherr said.
By using the LPO as a supplement to the grid, the dimensioning of the grid connection power can be substantially reduced, as the energy storage unit covers the load peaks of the machines. On construction sites, high load peaks and longer periods with very low power requirements are common, the company noted, such as for lighting or small appliances & tools. The Liduro Power Port series will be available in various power ranges up to 160 kW/kWh starting in 2024.
The mobile energy storage system supplies power on demand and without surplus, offering an optimal price-performance ratio. The LPO is said to deliver power with a significantly higher efficiency and without idle phases. The LPO series will be available this year.

STAGE 5 EXHAUST AFTERTREATMENT SYSTEMS AT THE CORE OF NEW PARTNERSHIP
NEW CELL MODULE CONTROLLER IS NOW AVAILABLE TO THE US MARKET
Marquardt has demonstrated its new Cell Module Controller (CMC) designed for stationary battery systems in US markets.
The CMC is able to monitor each battery cell in real time, processing related data to maintain performance and protect against cell failure. If a problem is detected, the controller passes that information to the master control unit which then can charge, cool down or rebalance the specific cell. Balancing eliminates differences in charge across the pack to achieve a uniform cell voltage, optimising the operating status and ultimately helping to extend the longevity of the battery.
Maintaining equal charge and temperature also helps to eliminate the chance of runaway overheating and maintain a safe environment. Marquardt said that the CMC is compatible with a wide range of battery chemistries and form factors. Analog front ends without software dependence help with ease of integration, whle providing a communication interface to other ECUs. According to Marquardt, the scalable system is ‘constantly being updated to meet evolving industry standards and customer requirements’. The company is now working on wireless variants of the CMC with the goal of improving adaptability and installation efficiency. Marquardt is driving the change in mobility. To this end, the company supplies solutions in the field of battery-electric drives - from battery and fuel cell management to interactive charging solutions. In its virtual product world, Marquardt can show the client how its components work together for safety and energy-efficiency.

Cummins Power Generation continues to expand its Centum Series generator set line, presenting its recently announced 1,750-kW C1750D6E and 2-MW C2000D6E and the all-new 2,750-kW C275D6E and 3-MW C3000D6EB to customers and distributors alike.
The two newest models, the C275D6E and C3000D6EB, are engineered specifically for mission-critical applications such as data centers, healthcare facilities and wastewater treatment plants. Designed with a smaller footprint, they allow for space optimization and maximum power output, representing a significant shift in the Cummins approach to power system design, the company noted.
“The energy demand for our customers is continuing to grow multiple fold. Hospitals that used to have some 1-MW gen-sets are now buying 2- or 3-MW type units,” said Vipul Tandon, executive director of Cummins Global Power Generation. “What we’re seeing across the board is the energy demand for applications continues to rise, and with that comes the need for reliable, right-sized gensets.”
Even as energy demand rises, space constraints at customer facilities continue to be a limiting factor. “Real estate is valuable, and we kept that in mind as we were designing the Centum Series,” said Scott Towsley, director, chief engineer for Cummins Mission Critical Americas.

BIOMASS WITH CARBON CAPTURE IN MICHIGAN
Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) has won a limited notice to proceed (LNTP) on a biomass with carbon capture and storage (CCS) conversion of a former coal-fired plant in Filer City, Michigan.
B&W is working with NorthStar Clean Energy to finalize the full contract, which includes a FEED study for the project. B&W can now begin detailed design and procurement work, with full notice to proceed expected in the fourth quarter of 2024.
When the conversion project is complete, the 73 MW Filer City power plant will use biomass as fuel – coupled with B&W’s SolveBright post-combustion CO2 capture technology. The scrubbing system absorbs CO2 directly from the plant’s flue gas using a regenerable solvent that is then recycled for re-use. B&W’s full contract scope of the conversion project is expected to include engineering, design and delivery of equipment to convert the plant to use biomass fuel and add carbon capture technology.
HYDROGEN ENGINES HAVE A FUTURE IN INDUSTRY, REPORTS DR TANYA RUEKERT
Robert Bosch has introduced new injectors for hydrogen internal combustion engines, while planning support for the wider H2 economy. While hydrogen fuel cells require purified fuel and air, high-tech filtration and (preferably) a low-contamination work environment, hydrogen internal combustion (IC) engines are as robust as their diesel or natural gas (LNG/CNG) counterparts.
Using a series of components shared with a standard IC engine, models using H2 fuel can deliver beneficial synergies across both development and manufacturing. For example, every component below the valve head seal can be transferred for use with hydrogen fuel with little or no modification. Genset fleet operators can achieve CO2 neutrality when using green hydrogen fuel.
Dr Tanja Rüekert, member of the board at Robert Bosch with responsibility for digital business and service, told the media: “To help us meet our global energy needs in a resource-efficient way, Bosch is focusing on digitalization, electrification and hydrogen.”
Complications with using hydrogen fuel are largely related to injection of the gas into the combustion chamber, she argues. As the lightest element in the universe, hydrogen has a tendency to collect at the top of the combustion chamber. This means it is difficult to achieve a balanced air/fuel mix, possibly resulting in uneven burn, unbalanced power delivery and wasted fuel. To avoid these issues, some OEMs use indirect injection, where H2 fuel is added to a pre-combustion chamber to help achieve a more thorough fuel burn, she explains.
AUTONOMOUS ENERGY STORAGE PACK DEVELOPED FOR THE US MARKET
The Vensys Group combines hydraulic, electrical and robotic expertise to provide manufacturers, distributors and users of mobile machinery with the solutions needed to improve performance, safety and extend the working life of equipment.
A series of 10 brands jave come together to make up the Vensys Group, each of which provide custom systems to decarbonise offhighway machines. CORROSION-RESISTANT FUEL CELL PRODUCTION RAMPS UP IN THE US
Honda has started series production of fuel cells (FC) at its Fuel Cell System Manufacturing (FCSM) facility in Brownstown, Michigan, US.
The plant is a joint venture with General Motors, which will also use fuel cells produced by the facility.
This latest fuel cell system is said to be key to Honda’s future hydrogen business strategy.
Co-developed by Honda and GM over the last decade, it is reported that the new FC is twice as durable as the model it replaces due to corrosion-resistant materials. Costs are said to have been reduced by about 66% through simplification of auxiliary components, common sourcing, economies of scale and reduced use of precious metals.
“We integrated the strengths of Honda and GM to create the most capable production system at this joint venture,” said Tetsuo Suzuki, vice president of FCSM.
“We brought a mass production mindset with attention to detail and a focus on high quality, and now we are ready to meet the needs of the customers for the future applications of fuel cell technology and the beginning of the hydrogen era.”
The Japanese company views hydrogen as a key strategy to achieving its ‘Triple Action to Zero’. This has the goal of achieving zero environmental impact across all Honda products, while extending that through the product lifecycle.
Honda has identified four ‘domains’ which can potentially benefit from the new FC system: FCEVs; commercial fuel cell vehicles; stationary power; and construction machinery.
“
“HONDA HAS DEPLOYED FUEL CELLS AS POWER STATIONS AT ITS CAMPUS IN TORRENCE, CALIFORNIA. IN DECEMBER 2023, ANOTHER FC POWER STATION WAS ADDED AT A DATA CENTER OPERATED BY MITSUBISHI. THERE ARE PLANS TO ROLL OUT SIMILAR SYSTEMS AT OTHER DATA CENTRES, SUPPORTED BY INVESTMENT IN RELATED NATIONAL HYDROGEN PRODUCTION VENTURES.”
While initial production at FCSM will be used to support internal Honda initiatives and production of FCEVs, the company is exploring additional business opportunities.
As it stands, the goal is to reach a production target of 2000 units per year and expand further over a series of stages.
The all-new CR-V FCEV will enter production this year at the Honda Performance Manufacturing Center (home of the NSX supercar) based at the plant in Marysville, Ohio.
It effectively replaces the second-generation FCX Clarity which was produced through 2015 and will be the only FCEV produced in the US.
Honda has deployed fuel cells as power stations at its campus in Torrence, California.
In December 2023, another FC power station was added at a datacentre operated by Mitsubishi. There are plans to roll out similar systems at other datacentres, supported by investment in related national hydrogen production ventures. Honda has been working on development of fuel cell technology for more than 30 years. The Japanese vehicle OEM, which is also reported to be the largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines – about 14 million each year – had limited success with its Clarity passenger car program. The high cost which reportedly prevented wider adoption is expected to be addressed with new FC production.

NEW PORTABLE POWER SUPPLY UNIT HAS BEEN RELEASED IN THE US
Makinex USA has released its Portable Power Box (PPB) for the US market - this is designed to replace traditional small gasoline-fueled generators, power tools ranging from hand-held grinders to concrete core drills and also charge battery-powered tools such as saws. The PPB will be sold under the growing Makinex Renewables brand.
“This machine does work very well indoors and it’s great for confined spaces,” said Philip Shumack, group marketing manager, Makinex. “It’s gotten a lot of attention from the concrete side of the construction equipment industry because they’re often working inside. General contractors are telling them they can’t run gasoline, so they have to find a solution to power their tools. This is it.”
Developed in-house and made by Makinex at its headquarters near Sydney, Australia, the PPB has 6 kW of output power combined with up to 15 kWh of storage from a bank of lithium-ion batteries. The company said it can be recharged in seven hours using standard 120 V, while 240 V and connected solar photovoltaic (PV) charging are optional.
The unit includes fault and thermal overload protection and is IP44-rated for weather resistance. Connection options for the version distributed in the United States by Makinex USA include three 15A outlets and 5V USB-A outlets.
“While there are portable gasoline generators with more power, the PPB runs in absolute silence with no fumes,” said Shumack. “Hospitals have shown a lot of interest in it, and it fits in an elevator. Crews can’t bring a gasoline-powered generator into a clean room.”
Founded by Rory Kennard and Paul Weaver, Makinex (its brand derived from the phrase MAKing INefficiencies EXtinct) has made a name for itself by designing and manufacturing a range of unique tools. The catalog includes a powered hand truck that uses an 18 V rechargeable lithium-ion battery and a linear actuator to help reduce back and shoulder injuries enabling solo

lifts up to 309 lb.; a lightweight plugin electric floor stripper; and a mobile charge pod to help keep tool theft and battery-based thermal runaways from ruining the workday.
Today, Makinex has 50 employees with offices in Sydney and the Dallas suburb of Mansfield, Texas, where some products are also produced. The company is supported globally by more than 4,000 equipment rental companies and over 1,000 dealers. It also supplies some of the biggest names in the professional power tool business.
“Our generator range is probably one of our most well-known products in the U.S.,” comments Weaver, head of Strategic Sales for Makinex, “and they are some of the most portable units for their power output in the world.
“Some customers are looking for different ways to charge tools on the jobsite, and the PPB is our first
iteration of a battery-powered generator. It has 15 kWh of power in the fuel tank, as we say; when running handheld tools and other plug-in equipment, customers can get a full day’s work out of it.”
Weaver explains that most of those applications are intermittent – most customers are not grinding steel for a full shift. The PPB doesn’t continue to idle when the tool stops.
“Most of our ideas come from our customers,” said Weaver, “and ultimately, we do have a growth mindset. Throughout our whole team, we’re always speaking with our customers to find out where their pain points are and turning a solution into a reality for them.
“We’ve managed to do that on a number of occasions over the last 20 years. And we’re really looking forward to continuing to do that over the next 20 years or more.”

Due to the flanged genset concept, the vibration decoupling takes place directly between the gas engine and the base frame, helping to further reduce setup costs.
With a greatly reduced oil consumption of less than 0.1 g/kWhe – the TCG 3016 gas engine boasts the lowest lubricant consumption in its class.
The MWM TCG 3016 truly is a efficient gas genset designed for power generation, notable for its robust performance and low emission levels.
The gas genset is perfectly tailored to the challenges of Industry 4.0 and the changed framework conditions
of a dynamic energy market in the age of global value chains.
The TCG 3016 series boasts significantly-reduced installation costs and low operating and maintenance costs thanks to long operating hours until the general overhaul.
With the comprehensive digital power plant control TPEM (Total Plant & Energy Management), the TCG 3016 gas genset reflects an entirely new age on the market for distributed energy solutions.
Apart from controlling the genset, a full integrated digital power plant control TPEM enables optimum control and monitoring of the entire energy generation plant.
Modern energy generation plants are characterised by complex applications and custom circuitry. Automation and closed-loop control with maximum operating security and seamless communication play a key role, which TPEM effectively handles.
In this way, additional controls are no longer necessary, and optimum control of the energy generation by the gas power plant is ensured. The system, which can be customised to
customer needs and the individual application case, replaces the TEM control system in all future MWM series to deliver improved efficiency and flexibility.

NEW POWER SOLUTIONS TO MEET THE EVOLVING NEEDS OF CUSTOMERS
Volvo Penta is promoting two of its latest products: the new 17-liter D17 generator set engine and a battery energy storage subsystem (BESS) offer. With the addition of the 705-kWe D17, Volvo Penta has grown its power node offering to cover from 200 up to 700 kW.
The compact, inline six-cylinder engine incorporates a slightly larger engine block that allows for the added displacement, points out Darren Tasker, vice president of Industrial Sales, Volvo Penta.
A modernized fuel injection system with a common rail design has been engineered for fuel efficiency.
Dual-stage turbochargers and heavy-duty steel pistons provide a dense power set up.
The engine delivers an optimized power-to-weight ratio within the same footprint as the D16. “This was a joint development between the Volvo Group companies,” Tasker said. As such, it was important to maintain the mounting positions for the engine, cooling connections, turbo position, air filters, etc. “We kept that all the same as the 16-liter so from an installation perspective, our customers will see no change.
“It’s a cost-effective, simple way of getting to that higher power node without a significant engineering investment,” he added. The dual-speed (1,500/1,800 rpm) engine is suited for a variety of applications but will be initially targeted to standby and prime power gensets.
“We’re going to start by selling this into the power generation market,” Tasker explains. “The second step would be to develop a variable-speed version of the engine so we can sell it into the off-highway markets.”
The company is still exploring alternative fuel options for the D17, including the development of a natural gas version. The D17 is compliant with UNECE REG 96 Stage 2 and it is certified for U.S. EPA Tier 2 Stationary Emergency, enabling it to be used for supplying a few hours of backup power in highly regulated regions. Like all Volvo Penta gen-set engines, the new model complies with the ISO 8528 G3 standard for load acceptance.
Volvo Penta’s BESS subsystem is comprised in part of energy-dense battery systems with optimized C-rates tailored for industrial use.
The subsystem is purpose-built and designed to be scalable up to hundreds of megawatt hours.
“The subsystem that we can build is very flexible,” said Tasker. “The customers we’re working with are putting, say, six or 12 of them into a customized container and then you can parallel as many of these containers together as needed.”
The complete subsystem includes the energy-dense battery packs plus a thermal management system, high-voltage cabling and power distribution and is packaged in a safe, easy to integrate way, Volvo Penta added.
Early in 2023, Volvo Penta announced plans to expand into subsystems for manufacturers of battery energy storage systems (BESS).
The battery systems utilized in the subsystems originate from Volvo Group’s electrification platform.
The modular and scalable subsystem incorporates a highenergy-density and high-power battery system with optimized C-rating designed to allow for fast charging and rapid discharge.
“It’s an extremely energy dense battery which is liquid-cooled so we can get even more energy in there,” points out Tasker.
The technology would benefit BESS OEMs in segments where energy density is a priority, such as peak shaving, energy arbitrage, EV charging and temporary power demand.
The subsystem, for example, is purpose-built and designed to be scalable up to hundreds of megawatt hours.
“The subsystem that we can build is very flexible,” concludes Tasker.
“The customers we’re working with are putting, say, six or 12 of them into a customized container and then you can parallel as many of these containers together as needed.”
EARLY IN 2023 VOLVO PENTA ANNOUNCED PLANS TO EXPAND INTO SUBSYSTEMS FOR MANUFACTURERS OF BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS (BESS). THE BATTERY SYSTEMS UTILIZED IN THE SUBSYSTEMS ORIGINATE FROM VOLVO GROUP’S ELECTRIFICATION PLATFORM. THEY ARE USED IN A VARIETY OF HEAVY-DUTY APPLICATIONS TODAY.”
These are used in heavy-duty applications such as electrified trucks, buses and construction equipment, which require compact, energy dense solutions.
“We’re taking components from the Volvo Group and we’re adding expertise from Volvo Penta to turn it into a subsystem which our customers can take from us and integrate it into the finished product,” Tasker stresses.
The complete subsystem includes the energy-dense battery packs plus a thermal management system, high-voltage cabling and power distribution and is packaged in a safe, easy to integrate way, Volvo Penta reports..
