Welcome to the 2024 PowerEx Live Conference being held at on December 12th, 2024, at the prestigious Park Plaza Hotel, Westminster, London. PowerEx offers a unique opportunity for today’s power professionals at a difficult time for energy management issues in Europe.
The GEN-SET, CHP & ENERGY LIVE Conferences will run parallel with exhibitor presentations available in adjoining rooms. The venue has been arranged with care so that products can be safely introduced directly to customers. There’s also the opportunity - of course - for a prime networking experience with experts in all fields of CHP, Data Centres, Renewables, Storage, Consultancy and Gensets, to name just a few.
Data centres are of critical importance today The UK data centre market was estimated to be worth approximately US$10.35 billion in 2023. The market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.1% between 2024 and 2032, reaching a value of around US$ 16.17 billion by 2032. Reliable energy is a key issue for this sector.
Tier 3 data centres are the most preferred due to features such as onsite assistance, power, and cooling redundancy. The UK Tier 3 DC market was operating at 1540.98MW in 2022. The expected capacity during the forecast period is expected to grow from 1813.19 MW in 2023 to 3369.24 MW in 2029 at a CAGR of 10.88%. These data centres are ‘concurrently maintainable’ with redundant components as a key differentiator.
Dave Andrews, Chairman of the Claverton Energy ‘Think Tank’, and a current conference organiser for PowerEx Live 2023, commented: “Once again PowerEx Live 2024 will prove itself to be a key event for the power sector, not just for its relevance to the data centre sector, but also to issues like CHP, sustainability and Zero Carbon.
“At PowerEx Live 2024 we are, once again, offering speakers at our Power Hub Learning Zone established in a selected area of the exhibition space. Providing key advice will be Fady Attalah of Mecc Alte UK, Clint Noble of Finning (UK) Ltd and Terry Strange of Cabel UK.”
One of the Labour Government’s declared priorities is making the UK a “cleanenergy superpower”. It has further pledged investment in technologies including “green hydrogen” and carbon capture and storage. The government has plans to encourage the number of CHP projects in the UK. In 2023, the number of CHP schemes and total electrical capacity both fell slightly, by 0.5% and 0.6% respectively.
In the UK electricity generation decreased by 6.9% in 2023, while heat generation decreased by 2.2% when compared to 2022. Schemes larger than 10 MWe represented just 69% of the total electrical capacity of CHP schemes, whereas schemes less than 1MWe constitute the majority (73%) of the number of programmes. In 2023 CHP projects accounted for 7.6% of the total electricity generated in the UK and 8.4% of UK gas demand.
Unsurprisingly, renewable energy investment is also on the rise. At the end of 2023 in the UK 7,971 MW of capacity (nearly 1.5 million installations) have been established, around 3.0% more confirmed capacity (but 15% more installations) than at the end of 2022. Nearly all of the new installations and capacity involved Solar PV.
Small scale capacity increased rapidly between 2010 and 2016 but slowed between 2017 and 2020. The number of small-scale solar PV installations recovered in 2021 and then increased sharply in 2022 and 2023, with 2023 seeing the most installations in a calendar year since 2015. Figures have been revised upwards this year following the receipt of a revised database from the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).
In 2023, bioenergy accounted for 48% of renewable energy sources used, with most of the remainder coming from wind (26%), waste (15% for both renewable and non biodegradable waste), heat pumps and solar (4.5% each).
Of the 27.2 million tonnes of oil equivalent (mtoe) of primary energy use accounted for by renewables, 19.1 mtoe were used to generate electricity, 4.7 mtoe to generate heat, 2.3 mtoe in transport with 0.6 mtoe of biogas injected into the grid. Renewable energy use grew by 1.5% between 2022 and 2023 and has increased more than ninefold since 2000. The significance of these figures - and more - will be discussed at the POWEREX LIVE 2024 event in London.
Don’t forget to make a note of December 11th, 2025 - the date set for the next POWEREX LIVE event in London at the same venue. We also have our regional event and Golf Day (July 2nd) in 2025: this is PowerEx Live MIDLANDS held on July 3rd 2025 at The Belfry Hotel & Country Club in Sutton Coldfield.

FuelActive Ltd. 2, Glan-Y-Llyn Industrial Estate, Cardiff Rd, Glan-YLlyn, Taff’s Well, Cardiff CF15 7JD fuelactive.com
FuelActive is a unique method of delivering 92% cleaner fuel to the engine by drawing fuel from just below the surface of the fuel tank, bulk storage unit or fuel cube. Standard diesel engines and storage units draw fuel from the bottom of the fuel tank where water, sediment, diesel bug and other contaminants settle.
The unique and patented fuel pick-up system ensures that only clean fuel enters the fuel lines eliminating the costly effects of fuel contamination. Not only that, because the engine is burning only clean fuel, the thermal efficiency of the engine reduces fuel consumption whilst maintaining factory-level emissions standards through its life cycle.
So, whether you own or operate construction, mining or agricultural machinery, or you run a fleet of HGV’s, FuelActive’s fit-and-forget solution will not only protect your engine from fuel contamination but also reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 5%.
FuelActive® was recently honoured with the Insider Media #MadeInWales Manufacturing Innovation Awards. This prestigious recognition highlights the significant financial impact FuelActive’s groundbreaking technology has had across regional, national, and international markets.

ABSTRACTS OF THE PAPERS
The following are information briefs accompanying the papers being delivered at the GENSET, CHP & ENERGY LIVE CONFERENCES being held in ROOM 2 at PowerEx Live 2024.
*ROMAIN MOCAER of Powergen Statistics talks about the European Generator and Data Centre Market Outlook. The data centre market is showing strong growth driven by th development of AI, he says.
* IAN BITTERLIN is Forecasting Data Centre Power Growth. This has long been driven by data traffic where data creation, transmission, computation, storage and regurgitation has always absorbedm power. He looks at the historical volume and drivers of data traffic and the demise of Moore’s law.
* LIAM ROUND of Teksan UK looks at diesel generators for data centres. Diesel generators are widely used in today’s data centres due to their durability, fuel efficiency, and reliability. They are capable of providing continuous power for extended periods, making them suitable for data centres which require 24/7 operations.
*JONNY RODGERS of RODENG Consulting LLP focuses on two areas: an Emissions Update 2025 and Grid Connections & Protection. RODEng Consulting LLP offers a large range of services in the area of Energy and Power Generation. This includes bespoke design and application support to clients from the conceptual phase through to project hand-over and operational support. RODEng has detailed experience and expertise in many sectors, including Power Generation, Heat Recovery, Renewables, Energy Storage, Acoustic Solutions, Medium & High Voltage Switchgear, Gas and Electrical Grid Connections and Control System Integration.
* DR. MICHAELA KENDALL of Adelan talks about recent Advances in the Global Hydrogen Economy. Adelan is the longest running hydrogen fuel cell technology company working in the global energy transition market for clean air. The founders of Adelan invented the core solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology in 1992, and solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) technology in 1999.
*SIMON MILLER of FuelActive delivers a paper on Fuels - The Cost of Contamination. Like most substances, fuel can easily become contaminated when left for a considerable amount of time. Microbes can be particularly troublesome and if left untreated, the contaminated fuel could jeopardise the performance of your generator and ultimately lead to power downtime.
*STEVE HONE & AMANDA MCFARLANE of the Data Centre Alliance (DCA) will jointly present an introduction to The Booming Data Sector. The DCA is a not-for-profit UK trade association comprising of leaders and experts from across the data centre sector. Through The DCA, organisations operating their own data centres and server rooms can access trusted information on the benefits of adopting best practice.
*MARK ACTON of Future-Tech reflects on Data Centre
Sustainability, Energy Efficiency, Metrics & Reporting.
Energy efficient cooling is critical to building more sustainable data centre operations. He outlines some key opportunities for free cooling and energy savings in server rooms of all sizes, all around the globe.
* IAN BITTERLIN’s second paper looks at Using Data Centres to Support The Power Utility. The practicalities of using UPS batteries and emergency generators to support the grid in times of trouble.
The UPS battery is designed to provide power for a short duration to critical systems. This is mainly done to combat electrical failure in the grid. These critical systems usually have a backup power system to run them for a prolonged time. The UPS system is designed to fill the transition gap from the electrical grid to backup power and vice versa. This transition can take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes.
* JOSH RIDDETT of Easy
CryptoHunter focuses on AI Data Centres. He believes the distributed computer world is changing the game for power. AI data centres are the future of revenue generation, he believes.
An AI data centre is a data centre which is optimised and automated using AI, machine learning and IoT devices.
These technologies help improve key aspects like efficiency, security and resource management, enhancing overall performance and saving costs.
Data centres today provide vast computing resources and storage, enabling artificial intelligence (AI) to process massive datasets for training and inference.
By hosting specialised hardware such as GPUs and TPUs, data centres accelerate complex calculations, supporting AI applications and
workloads. AI inference requires extremely high performance and low latency for end users and applications, to interact with the model in real time.
*VENESSA MOFFAT is a DCA Board Advisory Member presenting a paper: AI+ Data Centre + Power Consumption = Dead Planet?
Venessa looks at how to sustainably manage the growth in HPC and hybrid data centres. HPC combines hardware, software, systems management and data centre facilities to support a large array of interconnected computers working cooperatively to perform a shared task too complex for a single computer to complete alone.
*ROMAIN MOCAER of Powergen Statistics - in his second paperoffers more insights into the European Generator and Data Centre Markets and the likelihood for future growth.
Market studies online have suggested some high figures for the future: according to one market analyst the Europe generator set market is estimated to be at approximately US$ US$3.5 billion by the end of this year (2024) and is projected to reach US$ 4.42 billion in the next five years, registering a CAGR of over 1% during the forecast period.
Over the medium period, factors such as demand for uninterrupted and reliable power supply, backup requirements during power outages, and the longer timeframe required to set up the transmission and distribution infrastructure are expected to influence the generator sets market.
On the other hand, the higher cost of electricity produced by the generator sets relative to the utility grid is expected to restrain the market. Romain Mocaer offers his own incisive data in this lecture. Nevertheless, the rising popularity of hybrid generators and the rising

ABSTRACTS OF THE PAPERS
The following are information briefs accompanying the papers being delivered at the CHP & ENERGY TRANSITION & RENEWABLES LIVE CONFERENCE being held in ROOM 1 at PowerEx Live 2024.
* DAVE ANDREWS of Claverton Energy presents his paper on Generating Heat & Power in a Future Britain. This encompasses CHP, District Heating, the Grid and the Latest Technology. Plus - where the market is heading with alternatives fuels.
*PROFESSOR MARK BARRETT, professor at UCL, on Pricing Renewable Power In A Zero Emission Energy System.
Models show that to avert dangerous levels of climate change, global carbon-dioxide emissions must fall to zero later this century. Most of these emissions arise from energy use. Some parts of the energy system are particularly difficult to decarbonise, including a reliable electricity supply. Current technologies and pathways show promise, but integration of now-discrete energy sectors and industrial processes is vital to achieve minimal emissions.
* PROFESSOR DAVID PEARSON of Star Refrigeration on Large Water Source heat Pumps Driven by Renewable Energy With CHP Back for Whole City Heating. Although there are different kinds of heat pumps, they all work in the same way. Heat pumps transfer heat from the outside environment into a building through a four-step process: Evaporation; Compression; Condensation and Expansion.
*GABRIEL GALLAGHER, MD Sustainable Energy Ltd, loks at How To Design City-Wide DH Schemes (Bristol/ South Wales). True district heating is the distribution of heat from large scale generation and waste heat sources around large areas, usually within cities, connecting community heating schemes together. Community heating on the other hand is a centralised heating system that supplies heat and hot water to one building block with more than one heat customer.
* BILL BORDASS, Building Scientist, presents a paper: Can We Be Healthier, Save Energy & Cut Carbon Without Radically Reconstructing our Buildings? Decarbonising buildings, especially the old stock, through energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy use, not only reduces carbon emissions, but also generates co-benefits in health, energy affordability and the labour market.
*LARS FABRICUS on Heat Batteries and their role in Holistic Energy Systems. A heat battery is a system that stores heat energy for later use. It can be charged by various sources, such as solar panels or a heat pump. Heat batteries can store either spare heat or electricity. They often use phase change materials (PCM) to store heat24. In a house, bricks, masonry, and concrete can act as thermal batteries. Heat batteries (below) can also be used for hot water and space heating.
DR DAVID TOKE, 100% Renewable UK, speaks about How Britain Can Achieve A 100% Renewable Energy Supply.
Clean power generation is frontand-centre of the UK’s strategy to reach net zero by 2050, with the government setting energy providers a target for all electricity to come from 100% zero-carbon generation by 2035.
Currently, the majority of the electricity entering the national grid from a single energy source is natural gas. Natural gas is a largely imported fossil fuel and can emit harmful GHGs, such as carbondioxide (CO2), when burned to generate electricity.
* DR EDUARDO SATO from the Atomic Energy Authority will speak on Electrical Infrastructure for Fusion Energy [top picture]
This is very topical as a pioneering British nuclear fusion company has this month raised almost £100m and even suggested it could have a pilot plant running within a decade, bringing hopes of a near-limitless source of clean electricity closer.
Controlling reactions to produce continuous energy in commerical amounts has, however, proved impossible despite the billions of pounds spent on research.
Fusion plasmas are 10 to 15 times hotter than the sun and must be contained by magnetic fields, but designing the magnets and modelling their fields into a cage capable of containing white-hot plasmas for long periods has proved a difficult problem.
* NEIL PARRY of Alfa Laval on Reducing Carbon Emissions.
Alfa Laval is a Swedish company founded in 1883 by Gustaf de Laval and Oscar Lamm.
Originally providing centrifuges for dairies, it has since expanded to produce specialised products for heavy industry. Alfa Laval is a leading

With 60+ members joined, UKGSA is pleased to welcome the following companies who have recently joined the Association:
* ComAp - this is a global industry leader for smart energy control. The company has grown tremendously over the years, with over 500 employees, ComAp has gained strong expertise and experience over the years and has introduced innovative products, and commissioned thousands of projects in different industries and segments worldwide.
With the release this month of InteliNeo 2.0 firmware, expanding a hybrid microgrid is simpler than ever before, reports ComAp.
Whether integrating existing gen-sets, PVs or BESS, or adding additional battery energy storage systems to increase site power, InteliNeo controllers provide seamless integration of renewable energy with existing on-site controllers.
No matter what stage a site is at, InteliNeo controllers allow customers to expand whenever needed, supporting their business’s growth every step of the way.
Here are the three key benefits of InteliNeo controllers:
* Flexible and Reliable: The modular integration of renewable energy and storage allows for the customisation and expansion of power systems to meet customers’ growing energy demands. The modular and distributed architecture ensures that a failure in one InteliNeo unit will not affect the entire microgrid.

After more than 2 years of post-COVID recovery, and double-digit growth (+22% in 2021, +15% in 2022), 2023’s fingures indicate growth at a lower rate (+6%), with a much weaker second half of the year, and a slight decrease expected by the end of 2024.
Indeed, the main drivers of growth are currently at a standstill, even if large disparities exist depending on the region and segment.
One of the big differences between 2022 and 2023 is the stock levels at distributors.
In just a few months, we went from a situation where demand was much higher than supply (long lead times, shortage of components) to a situation where supply is now higher than demand.
The local Chinese market being very affected by the real estate and construction crisis, and Europe (which was boosted in 2022 by Ukrainian imports and fears of an energy crisis) are having a significant negative impact on the market in this end of 2023 and 2024.
Looking at market drivers
On a global scale, the main market drivers for sub 750 kVA generator sets are the industrial and construction sector, the Telecom market, agriculture, rental and residential generators. Here are their trends for 2024.
- Mobile and rental groups: The market is expected to take a break in Europe, after 3 years of post-COVID recovery where rental companies have invested massively in new fleets, and the outlook for the construction market calls for great caution. In North America, the mobile market seems to be holding steady at very high levels.
- Industry and construction: In general, the residential construction sector should decline in most regions, and the non-residential construction sector should show very contrasting growth depending on the region: sustained in Southeast Asia and to a lesser extent North America, it should suffer in China, Europe
and Latin America.
- Telecom: Although the development of 5G still benefits this segment, growth will be very moderate in 2024 because certain markets (USA) have invested massively in past years, except in Asia where growth should be more sustained.
Looking at the regions
- North America: growth has been mainly driven by the mobile segment and investments in new fleets. Although fears exist in the residential market, the nonresidential construction sector is expected to continue its growth thanks to the positive impact of government-related infrastructure investments.
- South America: After a year of strong growth in 2022, the South American market took a break in 2023-2024.
Inventory levels are high among distributors and the construction sector is slowing down despite substantial infrastructure programs.
- Europe: This is the region that suffered the most at the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024. After 2 years of very strong growth, driven recently by the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine and the energy crisis, the main vectors of growth are at a standstill. (Ukrainian imports, fears of an energy crisis, decline in construction) and product stocks are high at distributors.
The market is expected to record a double-digit decline in most countries by the end of 2024.
- China: The local Chinese market
continued to suffer in 2024 as residential housing projects continued to decline while growth in infrastructure projects has moderated.
Businesses are suffering from the slowdown in the global economy and falling exports. On the other hand, Chinese exports of generator sets are booming and have doubled in 2 years.
- South East Asia: It is one of the regions that did well in 2024, thanks to the growth of construction infrastructure projects in the key countries (Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines). Roads, railways projects as well as the relocation of the capital in Indonesia are some of the key examples.
- India: 2023 was a transitional year for generators below 800 kW with the implementation of the CPCB IV+ emissions standard. Government spending on infrastructure and the country’s economic outlook provide optimism for sustaining the growth of the Indian market.
- Africa & Middle East: growth prospects are subject to significant downside risks due to, persistently tight global financial conditions and elevated geopolitical risk especially in Africa.
However two countries should be the pillars of growth in these regions: Saudi Arabia thanks to the giant construction and infrastructure programs that have started, and South Africa which still suffers from blackouts and whose emergency generator market is still very strong.
