NEWS A drop in natural gas power generation was recorded in early months of 2021, reports the EIA

F

Hydrogen is taking over the power sector T

wenty US energy companies, including Sempra Energy and Dominion Energy Inc, have initiated the manufacture or hydrogen or have tested its effectiveness in natural gas pipes to take advantage of existing infrastructure as the US prioritizes lowercarbon fuels for power production. Most all of the world's hydrogen production is currently achieved through fossil fuels, and large utilities are currently mostly testing blends of natural gas and hydrogen in their pipelines. The companies experimenting with hydrogen are in early stages. Canada's Enbridge Inc is blending up to 2% hydrogen into its natural gas distribution systems in Ontario, and just received approval to blend hydrogen in Quebec. Pete Sheffield, Enbridge’s chief sustainability officer, commented:“We are looking to understand the potential either with the existing system or, as we're continuing to modernize the gas pipeline system, to ensure that new construction is hydrogen-ready," said Sempra's Southern California Gas (SoCalGas) utility, which supplies gas to 22 million consumers, is working on pilot programs to test the fuel in its pipelines and see how a blend with natural gas affects the company's pipes, as well as appliances and other equipment. The first project would blend hydrogen in a mostly residential area that SoCalGas can isolate from the rest of its distribution system, said Jawaad Malik, chief environmental officer. Virginia-based Dominion is testing a 5% hydrogen blend in a training facility in Utah and recently proposed a similar pilot in North Carolina, said Dominion spokesperson Aaron Ruby. Almost every gas turbine used to produce power can burn fuels containing about 5% to 10% hydrogen, said Jeff Goldmeer, General Electric's emergent technologies director for decarbonization. That would cut carbon dioxide emissions from natural gas from the power sector, which has been one of the fastest growing sources of demand for gas. Roughly 36% of energy-related carbon emissions come from fossil fuel-fired electricity generation, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). To reach net-zero emissions by 2050, global hydrogen use needs to expand to more than 200 million tonnes in 2030 from less than 90 million tonnes in 2020, according to the IEA. Reaching that goal will be difficult. Hydrogen production and transport costs more than natural gas, for now. Evercore ISI analysts said in a report that green hydrogen could become costcompetitive with less clean versions by 2030. 6

rom February-May 2021 natural gas-fired power generation in the USA’s ‘Lower 48’ states averaged 3394 GWh per day, a decrease of nearly 7% from the same period in 2020, according to data from the Energy Information Administration’s Hourly Electric Grid Monitor. The decline is the result of higher natural gas prices and increased competition from renewables, and it is the first year-over-year decline since 2017, says the report. Overall, US electricity generation during the period increased 6.6% compared with 2020 because of colder winter weather. Natural gas-fired generation in the US has been facing increased competition from renewable generation because of recent record-high capacity additions to wind and solar power plants. Between May 2020 and February 2021 - the most recent month for which EIA has data - 22.5 GW of combined net wind and solar electric generating capacity additions came online in the United States, a 15% increase. The EIA expects an additional 28.7 GW of wind and solar capacity to enter service during the remainder of 2021, based on its Preliminary Monthly Electric Generator Inventory. In contrast, between May 2020 and February 2021, 4.8 GW of U.S. natural gas capacity came online, a 1% increase. EIA expects an additional 3.8 GW of natural gas capacity to come online during the remainder of 2021. Natural gas prices have risen in the US since April 2020 because of lower natural gas production and higher winter heating demand compared with the previous winter heating season that ran from October 2020 to March 2021. The US benchmark natural gas price at the Henry Hub averaged $2.83 per MMBtu from January through April 2021, despite a cold snap and record-high prices in mid-February 2021. Higher US natural gas prices have hit the competitiveness of natural gas-fired generation compared with coal-fired generation, prompting natural gas-to-coal fuel switching. Coal-fired generation has increased nearly 40% in the United States during the first four months of 2021 compared with the same period in 2020 and accounts for 23% of total generation, according to data from EIA’s recent Hourly Electric Grid Monitor. Declines in natural gas-fired generation are expected to continue through to 2022. In May’s Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecast that natural gas-fired generation will decline 9.1% in 2021 and a further 0.7% in 2022.

New Fortress Energy is bringing in liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel Liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be shipped into the the Baja California Sur region of Mexico thanks to a project backed by New Fortress Energy , reports APN. The Pichilingue LNG terminal is likely to play a key role in the onward transport of liquefied natural gas and is destined to be the gas distribution point for power plants in the region.

T

he Pichilingue LNG terminal currently provides a gateway into the Baja California Sur market and may end up as the key fuel provider for coalfired and oil-fired generation plants located there. Natural gas emits only about half of the carbon-dioxide of coal power and would be the bettter option says the government pf Mexico.. Wes Edens, Chairman and CEO of NFE comments: “The delivery of more affordable an d cleaner-burning natural gas is a significant milestone for Baja California Sur. Our facility will enable customers to significantly reduce emissions and costs by switching from oil-based fuels to natural gas.” New Fortress Energy will deliver natural gas to the CTG La Paz and CTG Baja California Sur power plants in Baja California Sur through the Terminal under the terms of an agreement signed in March 2 021 , . The surge in U.S. natural gas production, driven by directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing of shale plays, has elevated the nation’s industry into export activities.

12

Terminals along the coastlines can deliver LNG - cryogenically contained and make it more stable for shipping - to markets for gasfired power generation plants in Europe, Asia and other sites. Pichilingue is located just north of La Paz, the state capital. Completion of the terminal means that a natural gas supply will flow into Baja California Sur for the first time, allowing power plants in the region to use LNG in lieu of fuel oil. The state, which encompasses the lower half of the peninsula, had previously lacked any sort of gas infrastructure. The state is the southern part of the Baja California Peninsula, located in the n orthwest of Mexico, part of the larger The Californias region of North America. U.S. firm New Fortress Energy (NFE) is advancing construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving and regasification terminal in the port of Pichilingue, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The first LNG is expected in the third quarter, the company said in a recent presentation, while the project will reach run rate in the four th quarter. Baja California Sur

““With the Pichilingue LNG terminal project well underway, we are closer to introducing more affordable and cleaner energy for Baja California Sur. We have witnessed how LNG supply can become a catalyst for energy diversification and economic change.”

is also cut off from the national Mexican power grid and as a result sees some of the highest power rates in Mexico, along with periodic power disruptions. The NFE project comes with a 105 MW gas-fired power plant and truck-loading bays for the supply of LNG to local hotel and industrial customers. “The LNG terminal at Pichilingue port is an important infrastructure project t hat will undoubtedly bring significant benefits to Baja California Sur,” said José López Soto, director of Port Authority Administration of Baja California Sur. “With the project well underway, we are closer to introducing more affordable and cleaner energy for Baja California Sur,” concludes Wes Edens. “We have witnessed how LNG supply can become a catalyst for energy diversification and economic develop ment and look forward to seeing similar results.” The facility has committed volumes of 0.5 million gallons per day, or 41.3 MMcf/d, with potential to double those volumes. Elsewhere in Mexico, LNG imports from its two active terminals — the 700 MMcf/d Altamira facility on the Gulf Coast and the 500 MMcf/d Manzanillo on the Pacific – are expected to dry up as pipeline infrastructure comes online, providing access to basins in the southern United States with cheaper options for natural gas. NFE has a similar import facility in Jamaica which began operations in 2016. Since then, committed volumes at its Jamaica terminal have increased fourfold, according to the company. Another project in Puerto Rico is set to ramp this quarter, and the company is in talks with more than 100 customers in Jamaica, Puerto Rico a nd Mexico for gas delivery. Earlier in February 2021 NFE also announced a project involving a 300 MW gas-fired power plant from an LNG facility planned for Puerto Sandino, Nicaragua. In the region, AES Panama has an LNG reception terminal near the mouth of the Panama Canal. www.newfortressenergy.com june- juLY 2021 AMeRICAn PoweR newS

BATTERY STORAGE

Manatee Energy Storage Center - 400 MW output & 900MWh of capacity FPL’s 900-MWh energy storage project has received its first battery unit installations at Florida Power & Light’s massive Manatee Energy Storage Center. The company claims that FPL Manatee Energy Storage Center - once operational - will be the biggest single solar power-battery facility anywhere in the world, reports APN.

F

PL, the utility owned by NextEra Energy, will complete a 409-megawatt energy storage project – the equivalent of approximately 100 million iPhone batteries - later this year. The FPL Manatee Energy Storage Center will be four times the size of the world’s largest on a megawatt basis, according to Green Tech Media. Manatee will be able to distribute 900 megawatt-hours of electricity, enough to power 329,000 homes for two hours - the facility will be charged using an existing FPL solar power plant in Manatee County. Using stored energy when there is a higher demand for power means a reduced demand on other power plants, thus reducing emissions even further. Irby was awarded the construction of the Florida Light & Power (FPL) Manatee Battery Energy Storage Center (BESS) in August of 2020. “Replacing a large, f ossil fuel plant with a mega battery which is adjacent to a large solar plant is another world-first accomplishment. Our team has remained

14

committed to developing this clean energy breakthrough while saving customers money and keeping their bills among the lowest in the nation,” commented Eric Silagy, president and CEO. So far, the BESS and substation consist of 132 new battery line-ups (battery containers and integrated inverter/pad-mount transformer skids), connected to a new 230/34.5 kV substation. Besides the Manatee storage center, FPL is also planning on installing a number of smaller battery units across the state, as well as more solar power plants. The project will save customers more than $100 million and eliminate more than 1 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. “Energy storage is an essenti al piece of the puzzle when it comes to building on our rapid solar expansion and delivering a brighter, more sustainable energy future that all of us can depend on, including the next generation,” Silagy said. “But the Manatee Energy Storage Center isn’t just bringing the Sunshine State one step closer to around-the-clock solar power, it

is also helping turn Florida into a world leader in clean energy and sustainability.” Each of the 132 units installed onsite weighs approximately 38 tons, is roughly 36 feet long by 11 feet in height and width and will hold roughly 400 battery modules, with each battery module being equivalent to about 2,000 iPhone batteries. The battery modules will store the extra solar energy produced by the neighboring FPL Manatee Solar Energy Center when the sun’s rays are strongest and send it to the grid when there is a higher demand for electricity. FPL operates 41 solar energy centers across more than 20 Florida counties. In addition to completing Manatee Energy Storage Center, FPL is also in the midst of constructing nine additional solar energy centers. By 2030, FPL forecasts that nearly 40% of the company’s power will be generated by zero-emissions energy sources - a 65%-plu s increase from 2020. www.fpl.com

GENERATORS

23MW project with five 4-MW natural gas engines and gensets at PIA Pittsburgh International Airport has celebrated the launch of a unique new microgrid powered by natural gas and solar resources. The microgrid will generate power, in part, through onsite natural gas wells and 9,360 solar panels across eight acres. The power generated at PIT is the primary supply for the entire airport, reports APN.

T

he 23-MW project recently launched at at Pittsburgh International Airport features five 4-MW Jenbacher natural gas engines and gensets joined by nearly 7,800 solar panels installed on eight acres of a former landfill. “We can totally disconnect from the grid and operate this in island mode,” comments Tom Woodrow, vice president of engineering at the airport. “The whole project is about public safety, redun dancy and resiliency-that’s the number one goal here.” Nearly all of the five Jenbacher engines will be operating full-time to provide the airport power first and then route the excess back into the PJM Interconnection. Accessing a source of natural gas was not a problem for the system designers: the airport is situated right in the middle of the gas-rich Marcellus Shale and has ample supply not far from the runway. In fact, Allegheny County has one of the few airports with a natural gas well onsite. “There is no shortage of natural gas in Pennsylvania,” Woodrow explains. “One of the goals is to support the local natural gas industry. We didn’t need to build much much

16

additional natural gas transmission pipelines.” The microgrid was designed to avoid the types of power outages twhich have caused problems at a number of US airports in recent years, including Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta, Los Angeles International and Washington Reagan International. Pittsburgh International Airport’s microgrid has become its primary power source, but the site will remain connected to the traditional electrical grid as an option for emergency or backup power, if required. “Part of our mission is to be a world leader in aviati on innovation and this project is about powering airports into the future,” said Pittsburgh International Airport CEO Christina Cassotis. “This project will bring power resiliency and redundancy to enhance safety and ensure continued operations for the traveling public.” The facility, has been constructed, operated and maintained by Peoples Natural Gas and powers both the Landside and Airside terminals, th e hangars and maintenance facilities, the airfield, the Hyatt hotel and a Sunoco gas station. The microgrid will generate power, in part,

through onsite natural gas wells and 9,360 solar panels across eight acres. “Pittsburgh International Airport is now one of the most site-hardened public facilities in the world while at the same time becoming more sustainable. That’s a tribute to the innovative culture o f our team, and we hope this project can be a model across the industry,” said Pittsburgh International Airport CEO Christina Cassotis. The Allegheny County Airport Authority Board of Directors in 2019 awarded Peoples Natural Gas a 20-year contract to build, maintain and operate the microgrid at no cost to the airport. Crews started construction in July 2020 and completed the project on schedule even as t he pandemic stalled the aviation industry last year. “Essential Utilities and Peoples Gas are proud to be an integral part of the airport microgrid project,” said Christopher Franklin, chairman and chief executive officer, Essential Utilities. “We’re demonstrating how new, alternative energies like solar can be integrated with traditional power sources like natural gas. This energy solution provides the air port with a more resilient power supply, as well as reducing its emissions.” The project was made possible thanks to a 2013 contract with Consol Energy permitting it to develop Marcellus Shale oil and gas wells on airport land. Consol has been drilling since 2014, and the natural gas it fracks there supplies the new microgrid generators. County executive Rich Fitzgerald says that without the contract the a irport would have faced “economic disaster” after the closure of the US. Airways hub in 2004 dramatically reduced the number of passengers traveling through Pittsburgh. Woodrow says Pittsburgh International has future plans to expand the microgrid’s solar installation. “There’s twice as much land,” Woodrow said. “We’re going to start talking about how we can expand this facility to generate even more solar energy and use it in other parts of our campus.” For more information on Jenbacher gas-powered generators please visit: www.innio.com june-juLY 2021 AMeRICAn PoweR newS

Next Generation Niagara (NGN) a new power upgrade program The New York Power Authority (NYPA) Board of Trustees has approved the award of a contract to Voith Hydro Inc., valued at up to $275 million, for mechanical and electrical upgrades related to the Next Generation Niagara (NGN), a 15-year modernisation and digitisation program to extend the operating life of NYPA’s Niagara Power Project in Lewiston.

N

GN will extend the operating life of NYPA’s Niagara Power Project in Lewiston, the largest source of clean electricity in New York State and one of the country’s largest hydroelectric projects. NGN focuses primarily on the 13 power-generating units in the project’s Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant. “The Next Generation Niagara mechanical upgrades represent a foundational part of our multi-year effort to mo dernize our flagship plant,” said Gil C. Quiniones, NYPA president and chief executive officer. “The digitization and upgrade work will progress turbine-by-turbine and include replacement of mechanical equipment, some of which dates back to the plant’s construction, and will also involve the addition of sensors and new technology to help the project meet NYPA’s bold digitization goals.” Launched in July 201 9, the NGN program improvements will include replacing aging equipment with the latest machinery which reflects advanced digital technologies for optimizing the hydroelectric project’s performance.

18

The initiative encompasses four major phases: * Design and implementation of an inspection platform to conduct comprehensive inspections of the Robert Moses Plant’s penstocks — the 485-foot conduits are 26 feet in diameter and run along the face of the project; * Replacement of the 630-ton gantry crane that enables disassembly and reassembly of the generating units; * Upgrading and digitizing control systems and building a new back-up control room; and *Overhaul and/or replacement of mechanical components which have reached the end of their operating life. The scope of work under this contract includes the design, delivery and installation of major mechanical components, including headcovers and servomotors, as well as the refurbishment of operating mechanisms including the generator rotors, runners and other turbine components. A majority of Voith’s manufacturing will be fully US-based for the project, reducing the
