According to the market analysts at Mordor Intelligence, the AsiaPacific generator sets market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 6.7% from now until 2025.   Factors such as the ever-increasing demand for power, lack of reliable grid infrastructure, the need for emergency backup power solutions, and the demand for steady power supply are driving the generator sets market. However, factors, such as high installation and operating costs and the consumer preference towards eco-friendly alternatives (solar, fuel cells, etc.) are restraining the market’s growth. Below 75 kVA capacity generators are estimated to have the largest market share during the forecast period, supported by the increase in demand from telecom, retail, other commercial buildings, and residential sectors. The commercial and industrial sectors of emerging economies, the residential sector of developed economies, and the increasing need for power in THE CONSTRUCTION defence operations are expected MARKET IS ON THE RISE to create significant opportunities for market participants in the near IN INDIA AND CHINA future. China accounted for the largest FUELLING DEMAND FOR share in the market in 2019, with majority of the demand coming GENERATORS IN THE from across the nation and rising ASIA-PACIFIC REGION.” commercial office spaces and small-scale vendors. Gensets with outputs of less than or equal to 75 kVA diesel generators are more commonly used in the Asian telecom sector, commercial complexes, small restaurants, small-scale industries, petrol stations, among others, primarily as backup power in grid-connected areas and as the main power source in off-grid areas. The purchase of small generators in Asia is mostly based on price and requirement rather than efficiency, as they offer emergency backup power. The unreliable and limited power access, especially in rural areas has been the major reason for the high demand for low capacity generators. The demand for small generators in range 0-75 kVA is increasing drastically, with the change in the landscape of the commercial sector, especially in the developing countries of the Asia-Pacific, region, says the latest report from Mordor Intelligence. Another factor is the building & construction market which is on the rise in India and China due to current government initiatives such as smart cities and green building initiatives. This is expected to create a demand for portable generators during the forecast period., and in turn, drive the generator set market.

FIRST M701 JAC GAS TURBINE BEGINS POWER PRODUCTION AT CCGT IN THAILAND

T

he Southeast Asia’s first M701JAC goes online at plant in Chonburi Province operated by Gulf SRC. Concerted efforts by all parties enabled launch on schedule, despite the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic Mitsubishi Power, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, inaugurated operation of a newly-completed M701JAC gas turbine, which will serve as a core component in a project to build two natural gas-fired power plants in Thailand. The M701JAC joins the global fleet of J-Series and JAC-Series gas turbines which have amassed more than 1.3 million operating hours; with 83 units ordered across the globe. The project is part of a joint venture between Gulf Energy Development Public Company Limited, one of Thailand’s largest independent power producers (IPP), and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. The M701JAC is the first of eight units ordered on a full-turnkey basis in 2018 and is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. These eight units will comprise gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) systems with a total output of 5,300 megawatts. A 25-year long-term service agreement (LTSA) for these units is also in effect. The construction of the remaining seven units has commenced and are scheduled for the full launch of commercial operations in 2024.

MITSUBISHI POWER WILL MAKE AND SUPPLY THE GAS AND STEAM TURBINES AS WELL AS ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT, WHILE MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC CORPORATION WILL PROVIDE THE GENERATORS. THE POWER GENERATED WILL BE SOLD TO THE ELECTRICITY GENERATING AUTHORITY OF THAILAND (EGAT) TO SUPPORT THE COUNTRY WITH A RELIABLE AND HIGHLY EFFICIENT SOURCE OF CLEAN ENERGY.”

www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

The two ultra-large-scale power plants are under construction in Chonburi and Rayong Provinces, approximately 130 kilometres southeast of Bangkok. Each plant will have an output of 2,650MW and use natural gas as its primary fuel source, along with four power trains each incorporating a gas turbine, steam turbine, heat recovery steam generator and generator. Mitsubishi Power will make and supply the gas and steam turbines as well as ancillary equipment, while Mitsubishi Electric Corporation will provide the generators. The power generated will be sold to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to support the country with a reliable and highly efficient source of clean energy. The new M701JAC is a core component of the power plant in Chonburi Province, which is operated by Gulf SRC Company Limited. At a time when the global coronavirus pandemic is having an impact on equipment deliveries and installations as a whole, due to logistical issues and difficulty in sending engineers to project sites, the operation of the first gas turbine unit is on schedule thanks to the concerted efforts of all parties involved. Mrs. Porntipa Chinvetkitvanit, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Gulf Energy

Development Public Company Limited, welcomed the inaugural achievement. “We offer our praise and appreciation for the way everyone at Mitsubishi Power worked diligently to enable the launch of the project’s first gas turbine on schedule, even amidst the pandemic. This initial success supports our expectations that the company will continue to exercise outstanding project management to enable all eight units to go online on schedule.” Koji Nishikawa, President and Managing Director of Mitsubishi Power (Thailand), spoke of his company’s commitment to its work in Thailand. “We are pleased to continue supporting Thailand’s push for sustainable economic development through our highly-efficient and reliable gas turbines. Going forward, we will continue our longstanding commitment to the country as we work to bring the remaining seven units online to grow a stable supply of power in Thailand.” In 2011 Mitsubishi Power received full-turnkey orders from a company backed by Gulf Energy Development to construct GTCC plants at Nong Saeng and U Thai; the plants began commercial operations in 2014 and 2015. https://power.mhi.com

LOAD BANKS

APRIL 2021

WHEN POWER IS MISSION-CRITICAL, TESTING BACKUP UNITS IS KEY

C

restchic Loadbanks, a leading supplier of load testing equipment based in the UK, has reported strong growth so far this year, with a significant amount of business coming from the growing data centre market. As the world reels from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is no surprise that there is increased pressure for data centres to be immune to the risks of downtime, with load bank testing playing a vital role in any future resilience strategy, explains Paul Brickman, Sales and Marketing Director at Crestchic Loadbanks. “The events of the last 12 months have demonstrated that the ability to operate, secure and recover systems is critical to the global economy,” Paul point out. “With social isolation a key tactic in the fight against COVID-19, people are increasingly reliant on digital communications, whether because they are working from home, keeping in touch with family, spending time on social networking sites or turning to online shopping in a bid to fill their cupboards.” Data centres are playing a vital role in this crisis – supporting mission critical business and social activities but also allowing governments and health professionals to store and share data which could play an important role in fighting the spread, stresses Paul. “The critical role of data centres has been highlighted by industry giants lobbying the government to explicitly mention data centres in the list of key worker professions. While business continuity strategies during the crisis have inevitably focused on limiting infection and ensuring continuity of service, the longer-term ramifications of the pandemic will undoubtedly change the shape of continuity planning in the future.”

He continues: “A continuous focus on efficiency and reliability means that preparedness is in the data centre industry’s DNA. Most have very robust strategies in place to deal with power blackouts. “Most are already wise to the importance of testing power supplies to avoid downtime and it’s true Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) are universally accepted as a piece of critical business infrastructure.” He points out: “This is evident in our own order books – in the last month alone we’ve seen huge orders for a major new data centre in Jakarta and a data telecommunications centre in Paris. “However, when power is mission-critical, testing back-up power

systems can make all the difference to whether they operate effectively when called upon. Paul comments: “However, when power is mission-critical, testing back-up power systems can make all the difference to whether they operate effectively when called upon. When operating on skeleton staff, having the confidence that backup power will work if required is even more important.” He concludes: “While non-essential testing will undoubtedly be on hold for the time being, we expect to see an upsurge in testing when we emerge from this crisis and anticipate that regular preventive maintenance will become increasingly prevalent in the future.” www.crestchicloadbanks.com

BUILDING TWO LNG POWER PLANTS IN VIETNAM FOR 2026-7

S

outh Korea-based GS Energy has announced plans to build LNG power plants in Vietnam The two power plants are projected to be completed by 2026 and 2027. GS Energy has said it will build two 1.5GW LNG power plants in Long An, Vietnam. Together with its partner investment firm VinaCapital, Gs Energy will invest US$3.08 billion (3.5t won) to build the new services. Once built, GS Energy will operate the plants for an estimated 25 years. Electricity produced by the plants will be sold to the Vietnam Electric Power Corp. The start date for construction has not yet been disclosed but has been suggested for 2022. The construction of the power plants is part of Vietnam’s plans to raise the gas-fired electricity in its power mix to 21% by 2030 and 24% by 2045, up from the current 13%. GS Group is currently the No. 1 private power generation company in Korea with a total capacity of 5.7 GW. In November 2019, the group formed a strategic partnership with Vina Capital, Vietnam’s largest asset management company to promote LNG power generation projects in Vietnam. The power generation capacity of the planned thermal power plant equals that of three nuclear power plants put together. The electricity produced by the plants will be sold to Vietnam Electric Power Corp. GS Energy is planning to implement a gas to power project, which encompasses the entire process of power generation from LNG transportation and LNG storage and operation of vaporization facilities

GS Group has plan to initiate ts energy business in Southeast Asia by using this Vietnam project as a bridgehead. It previously participated in a UAE land oil mining project in 2015, securing the largest crude production volume in terms of a single project in the history of Korea’s oil field development. It succeede in developing exploration mines in the UAE in 2019. Vietnam is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia. Like other emerging markets, its electricity generating capacity has been under pressure to keep up with demand, which has increased by approximately 10% annually in recent years. Vietnam has traditionally relied on coal as its primary source for generating electricity. The Power

Development Plan VII, published in 2016, planned for coal to remain the key source of energy in the country, with coal production capacity projected to more than double its current levels by 2030. In recent years, however, Vietnam’s coal power project development has slowed, and renewable energy and natural gas have emerged as important components of Vietnam’s future energy mix. The demand for natural gas presents significant LNG opportunities in Vietnam not only due to the growth in demand for energy, but also because gas production in Vietnam is expected to start declining from 2025 and offshore exploration in the South China Sea is facing challenges. www.gsenergy.co.kr

ALTERNATORS & HYBRID SYSTEM TRIALLED ON A CRUISE VESSEL

D

eman Tasmania has been associated with Mecc Alte in Australia for a number of years and when they looked to design and build a new DC generator, it was apparent that Zanardi’s new direct drive PMG, along with the new Sices hybrid controller could offer them a solution. Zanardi are part of the Mecc Alte Group, which has specialised in producing alternators since 1947 and continue to grow its portfolio with customised power solutions. Deman Tasmania have been building reliable marine generator sets for many years, and previously had been commissioned to build a DC generator solution for a tourism cruise vessel which required quiet, cost-effective and energy efficient refrigeration. This new Deman developed solution needed to provide direct drive, variable speed, controllable for varied battery types and combine multiple energy inputs, management of the charging and output requirements for a hybrid system and be adaptable for marine, land, industrial and domestic solutions. The DC solution was fitted into the customer’s working test bed, a 16-metre cruising Ketch, Frenchbuilt Amel Super Maramu and developed a working

software profile and the required system to support a fully controlled Hybrid System. The Sices controller worked brilliantly. All monitoring of the vessel’s electrical system is routed through the controller and reliance on various battery monitors that were existing are redundant with the level of accuracy and control the HS315 offers. The main PMG genset is powered by a 2-cylinder diesel engine with electronic governing and combine DC inputs from Solar, an alternator on the main engine, wind turbine, and when on shore power AC from the shore supply via a combination charger/inverter.

All this feeds into a large battery rack of Carbon Foam Batteries with partial state of charge technology. David Duffin, Managing Director from Deman Tasmnia said: “With many live hours of operation aboard the vessel the owners are delighted with its low fuel consumption, quiet operation and level of control. We are now confident to commercialise the design for marine and telecom installations.” Ross Sheils, General Manager of Mecc Alte Australia said: “It is great that we can support our customers with new solutions and continue our partnership.” www.meccalte.com
