First announced in 2021, Toyota has been hard at work constructing a new renewable-energy based research site - Woven City - just miles away from Mount Fuji on the island of Honshū, with the first of 2,000 anticipated residents now expected to move in before the end of 2024.

Marketed as a ‘mass human experiment’, Woven City will provide a ‘living laboratory’ for Toyota to test prototypes of their renewable and energyefficient self-driving vehicles, dubbed ‘E-palettes’. The car manufacturer also expects to gather energy data from the use of these driverless cars, guided by sensors in lights, buildings and from ‘smart’ roads traversing the city.

This testbed development will help Toyota’s researchers to better understand energy patterns in both automotive and pedestrian traffic.

Far East Sales

Bob Liu Shanghai, China bob.liu@ronco.com.cn

Woven City is also also expected to feature ‘smart homes’ running almost entirely on hydrogen fuel, reducing emissions so that the futuristic habitation, with its whopping price tag of £7.8 billion, will be as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible.

Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s president, has said: ‘Building a complete city from the ground up, even on a small scale like this, is a unique opportunity to develop future technologies, including a digital operating system for the city’s infrastructure.

“With people, buildings and vehicles all connected and communicating with each other through data and sensors, we will be able to test connected AI technology in both virtual and the physical realms, maximising its potential.’

In addition to this cutting-edge tech, most of the buildings in the city will be constructed in traditional Japanese style from wood and fibreboard. A city of 2,000 people like this contains about 1,000 households, and knowing that the average U.S. household consumes about 1,000 kWh (1 MWh) each month, and 12 MWh per year, it can be projected that to cover energy demands the authorities will need to produce at least 12,000 MWh of clean and renewable energy each year.

A power station which burns biomass to produce energy, usually consumes about 75 tons of biomass per hour to generate about 50 MW of energy. The power station burn about 400,000 tons of biomass (mainly wood chips) per year to produce about 265,000 MW of energy. 265,000 MW of clean power covers only about half of the energy demands in the city, and this means that the Japanese will have to also use other sources of alternative energy to cover the power demand shortfall only using renewable energy sources.

THE WORLD’S FIRST LIQUID H2 PUMP WHICH MARRIES HIGH-FLOW CAPACITY WITH SUPERIOR EFFICIENCY

Torishima Pump Mfg. Co., Ltd. (Torishima) and Program-specific Professor Taketsune

Nakamura from the Graduate School of Engineering at Kyoto University have jointly developed the world’s first liquid hydrogen pump.

It is unique - says the company - because it marries high-flow capacity with unparalleled efficiency. This innovation, powered by a superconducting motor.

It apparently marks a crucial advance towards a sustainable hydrogen economy. At the heart of global efforts to achieve

carbon neutrality lies the imperative to harness clean energy sources like hydrogen.

However, the widespread adoption of hydrogen as a fuel has been constrained by the cost challenges associated with its production and transport.

Torishima, a company with a mission to “Save the world with pumps,” embarked on this groundbreaking project alongside Kyoto University in 2021.

The project gained momentum in 2023 with support from a Japanese governmental agency, NEDO under the “Building Competitive H2 Supply Chain”. programme.

ENERGY STORAGE SOLUTION TURNS THE LIGHTS BACK ON IN TAIWAN

On March 3, 2022, a serious power outage in Taiwan, happened. More than five million households and at least 500 businesses were affected. Thanks to an SMA battery inverter, however, they were quickly back on the grid and supplied with power. The example clearly shows the importance of storage solutions in grids with an increasing share of renewable energies.

For the island nation of Taiwan, the power outage on March 3, 2022, was one of the most severe since the earthquake on September 21, 1999.

A total of 5.49 million households – nearly 40 % of Taiwan – lost power. The semiconductor, optoelectronics, petrochemical,

and steel industries all suffered disruptions. Financial and economic losses are estimated to be in the tens of billions of Taiwanese Dollars (TWD 10 billion equivalent to around €300 million).

According to the power plant operator Taipower, on the morning of March 3, 2022, an equipment failure in the Hsinta Power Plant in Kaohsiung made every generator south of a certain extra high voltage substation in Tainan disconnect from the power grid.

Since Taiwan’s entire power grid is interconnected, a malfunction at a single plant can lead to a chain reaction which has repercussions across the island. As a result, the power grid lost a third of its capacity.

With the help of the SMA Storage Solution including the battery inverter Sunny Central Storage, the Taiwan Cement Corporation (TCC) secured frequency regulation backup auxiliary services and prevented worse scenarios by providing the maximum power of 5,000 kW. The SMA Storage Solution discharged to a maximum of 5,000 kW within 300 seconds.

BIOMETHANE REMAINS AN

IMPORTANT COMPONENT

IN

ENERGY TRANSITION IN ASIA

THE

Guido Harsch, Area Sales Manager at NEUMAN & ESSER comments on behalf of the company: “Fluctuations in the wind and sun are part of the major challenges for the energy infrastructure of the future. However, energy storage contributes to the successful cushioning of these fluctuations.”

CO2-neutral gas from biomass is not subject to these fluctuations and achieves in excess of 80 % annual full load equivalent, he says. This is equivalent to five times as much as energy from photovoltaics.

Currently, biomethane with an energy content of 10 TWh is fed into the natural gas

grid annually in Germany.

The various scenarios viewed by NEUMAN & ESSER suggest around 90-110 TWh biomethane feed for 2030. This would, for example, secure the heat supply for 30% of all households in a European nation like Germany. Biomethane provides an important contribution for a functioning dual energy carrier world based on electricity and gas from renewable sources. The biomethane, which largely consists of organic waste, can be fed into the gas grid and finds customers in industry as well as at natural gas refuelling stations. It contributes to eco-friendly supply of households and industrial users.

GEN2I DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM ENSURES HIGHER EFFICIENCY IN GENERATOR SETS

As performance requirements for generators have become increasingly demanding, Cummins South East Asia Services in Singapore recently turned to HBK’s GEN2i data acquisition system to provide the extensive analysis and isolation requirements needed.

Both American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and ISO 8528 requirements for alternating current generator sets for land and marine use demand that any frequency and voltage variations can be verified as staying within specified limits. The regulations focus on the limits maintained when generator sets are undergoing numerous load changes over a 40-minute period.

The data acquisition equipment had to be capable of continuously recording threephase voltages of 50/60 Hz and up to 480 Vrms plus five K-type thermocouples and other miscellaneous signals - each less than 10 volts. The equipment also needed to calculate a wide range of performance criteria, including the Vrms and frequency trend waveforms for all three phases, maximum and minimum voltage and frequency values, percent change in voltage and frequency and the voltage and frequency recovery time for every load change; these occur roughly every 40 seconds.

To meet these exacting demands HBK provided its GEN2i Genesis HighSpeed eightchannel, 200 kS/s data acquisition system. Additional equipment included three 25 MS/s high-voltage fiber-optic isolated digitizers, providing a virtually infinite isolation barrier, with an associated fiber-optic receiver card and high voltage probes. Analysis and reporting of a generator’s performance is provided by HBK’s Perception software using the integrated formula database to generate the needed analysis algorithms. Onsite training for Cummins’ staff was also provided by HBK.

80MW DATA CENTRE PROJECTS WITH FUEL CELLS BACK UP FOR SINGAPORE’S GROWING DATA CENTRE SECTOR

SK ecoplant, a Korean company whoich is a long-time partner of Bloom Energy, is using Bloom’s innovative fuel cell technology to power a new data centre in Singapore for GDS, China’s largest data centre developer.

The Singapore Economic Development Board and the Infocomm Media Development Authority selected GDS as part of a group of four data center operators that will share in what could eventually be about 80 megawatts (MW) of new capacity for Singapore’s information communication technology (ICT) infrastructure.

“Bloom Energy is excited to be a partner with SK and provide our Energy Servers to power a GDS data center in Singapore,” says Bloom Energy Founder, Chairman and CEO, KR Sridhar. “The grid constraint in Singapore is similar to the lack of power availability in most data center hubs around the world today. This lack of supply is making distributed power that can be deployed quickly with our modular AlwaysOn fuel cells the right choice for data centers. It is also the cleanest available technology today and can operate on net-zero fuels like hydrogen as they become available, thereby enabling the ICT segment to meet their sustainability goals. We look forward to supporting our partner SK in this project.”

The project represents Bloom’s first in Singapore as it expands its Asian footprint. In Taiwan the company recently cut the ribbon on the initial phase of a 10MW project in Taiwan for Unimicron, a chip substrate and printed circuit board maker. Working with SK ecoplant, Bloom has installed more than 400 MW of fuel cells in South Korea. Bloom inaugurated a 100 kilowatt (kW) hydrogen-powered Energy Server® project in Korea in April 2021. The company also put in its Bloom Electrolyzer™ there and began producing hydrogen from it in January 2022.

Bloom’s fuel-flexible solid oxide fuel cells have become a key power source for data centres in Asia, the United States and Europe. In 2022 Bloom installed 500kW of fuel cells in Bengaluru, India, for Nxtra by Airtel, which has 12 large and 120 edge data centres across India. Frost & Sullivan named Bloom the leading company in the stationary fuel cell market in 2023.

TUNGSTEN MONOBLOCKS ARE KEY TO RECORD-BREAKING ENERGY PRODUCTION

The Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) at the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy (KFE) in Daejeon has broken its previous plasma operation record, achieved during its first plasma campaign, following the upgrade of its divertors (plasma facing components) to tungsten monoblocks.

KFE said it had sustained the plasma with ion temperatures of 100 million degC for 48 seconds during the KSTAR plasma campaign run from December 2023 to February 2024. Additionally, it achieved the high confinement mode (‘H-mode’) for over 100 seconds.

KSTAR achieved its milestone of reaching 100m°C plasma in 2018 for the first time, and set a new record by sustaining plasma with an ion temperature of 100m°C for 30 seconds in 2021. This latest achievement was founded on improvements in the performance of the plasma heating systems and advancements in high-temperature plasma operation and control techniques.

KSTAR also successfully maintained H-mode for a continuous duration of 102 seconds. H-mode is the baseline operation mode for sustaining a high-temperature, high-density plasma state. These improvements are mainly due to the upgrade applied to KSTAR’s divertors with tungsten in 2023.

COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS IS THE FUEL FOR MALAYSIA’S POWERPLANT

This month reflects a 1-year anniversary of MAN Energy Solutions winning the contract to supply four MAN 51/60DF dual-fuel engines to a new power plant in the Malaysian state of Sabah, on the island of Borneo.

The initial scope of supply included three 18V51/60DF and one 8L51/60DF engines, - the gensets provide a total of 65 MW of generation capacity for a local industrial plant.

Based in an industrial zone near the city of Kota Kinabalu in northern Borneo, the new power plant provides a reliable and flexible electricity supply to a factory producing solar glass for end-customer, Kibing Solar. Solar glass is an important component in the production

of photovoltaic modules and the factory will ultimately employ up to 1,800 people.

Martin Chmiela, Regional Sales Head, Power Plants, Asia-Pacific at MAN Energy Solutions, said: “Our dual-fuel engines are ideally suited for the reliable and decentralised power supply of industrial plants in remote regions and on islands. This power plant will be able to run on both low-emission natural gas and liquid fuels, offering the greatest possible security of supply.”

The four engines run on low-emission compressed natural gas (CNG). CNG is largely methane (CH4) compressed to less than 1% volume natural gas . occupies when under normal atmospheric pressure.

Once operational in 2025, it will produce 150,000 tonnes of biomass pellets and 150,000 tonnes of wood chips per year. Wood pellets for biomass plants will be a primary product.

The project is anticipated to contribute to addressing issues like environment pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, while promoting the sustainable development of biomass energy industry in Tuyen Quang.

Honna Hitoshi, president and representative director of Erex JSC, said the project contributes to realising Vietnam’s net emission reduction policy, providing stable electricity and meeting the economic development needs of Vietnam and Tuyen Quang in particular.

Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Van Son urged departments and agencies to work closely with the Japanese investor - Erex JSC - to step up the plant construction.

The Tuyen Quang region currently has 20 active projects involving 17 foreign investors, with a total investment exceeding US$340 million (€312 million). It also benefits from the support of numerous international partners, with the Japanese groups extending their involvement in 25 projects across VietNam.

Nationally, biomass resources includes rice husks from paddy milling stations, bagasse from sugar factories, coffee husk from coffee processing plants in the Central Highlands and wood chips from wood processing industries. Vietnam has a target of having a capacity of 2,000MW in 2030 achieved via biomass fuels.

SUSTAINABLE WOOD PELLETS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE CARBON NEUTRAL AT THE POINT OF COMBUSTION. AS THEY GROW, FORESTS ABSORB CARBON FROM THE ATMOSPHERE. WHEN A BIOMASS PELLET IS COMBUSTED, THE SAME AMOUNT OF ATMOSPHERIC CO2 IS RELEASED.”

Biomass Vietnam JSC (BVN) is one manufacturer of wood pellets in Vietnam. It aims to achieve total capacity 0.5 million tons of wood pellets per year by 2024.

A company spokesman commented: “Wood pellets from working forests can play a key role in reducing the emissions that contribute to global warming. Trees in a working forest naturally absorb carbon as the forest moves through its cycle of growth, harvest and regrowth.

“When harvested wood is used to generate electricity, the carbon released during combustion is reabsorbed by the next generation of trees. Compressed wood pellets therefore offer a readily available, renewable, low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels such as coal - one of the largest contributors to climate change.”

In 2021 the Vietnam wood pellet export total was out at nearly four million tons. From 2016-21 the output of wood pellet increased by 25% per year on average. In 2020, Vietnam exported about 3.1 million tons.

By compressing organic matter like wood, forest residues and sawdust into energy-dense pellets, biomass can be used for heating or

renewable bioenergy generation at a much greater scale.

The advantage of using biomass in the form of a pellet is its energy density. This refers to the amount of energy that can be stored in a given amount of a material.

On their own the wood and residues like wood chips and sawdust that make up biomass do not have a high energy density.

A kilogram of wood, for example, stores little energy, compared to other fuels - by compressing forest industry residues into a pellet, biomass becomes significantly more energy dense.

Wood pellets can also have very low moisture content, giving them a high combustion efficiency – an important feature in power generation.

Biomass pellets are typically made at a pelletisation plant. Here wood that is unsuitable for other industries like sawmill residues, are brought together. The wood is chipped, screened for quality, heated to reduce its moisture content to below 12% and then converted into a fine powder. This is then pressed through a grate at high pressure to form the solid, short, dense biomass pellet.

HYDROGEN ENERGY SOLUTION TO BE PROVIDED TO MALAYSIA UNDER NEW DEAL

Hydrexia Holding Limited (Hydrexia), a leading hydrogen technology solution provider in China, and Toyota, a global automotive manufacturer has announced that the Malaysia subsidiaries of the two companies have reached a commercial agreement for certain hydrogen application solution.

Under the terms of the agreement Hydrexia provided UMW Toyota with its containerised mobile hydrogen refuelling stations (HRSs) to refuel the hydrogen fuel cell vehicles - this was showcased at the current Toyota’s “Beyond Zero” event in Malaysia in February 2024.

Beyond Zero is a showcase of multi-pathway approach towards carbon neutrality. It stands as a significant pledge and initiative by Toyota towards environmental sustainability and the journey towards carbon neutrality. Through this event, Toyota demonstrates its commitment to providing environment-friendly mobility for all, contributing to a net positive carbon impact and fostering a sustainable future.

HRSs are the key element of any hydrogen fuel supply chain, acting as the interface between various possible hydrogen supply concepts and end users’ vehicles and other equipment.

The core function of the HRS is the cost-effective, efficient and reliable compression as well as buffering of high-pressure hydrogen with a view to its dispensing.

Current compression technology is mechanical and was originally developed for industrial environments, where operation is stable and precisely defined maintenance requirements are followed. Using such technology in fuelling stations, where operation is discontinuous and supervision limited, raises cost and reliability issues.

In some cases bladder accumulators might be used for performing hydrogen compression and buffering. The dispensing of hydrogen involves buffering in addition to compression, because high-pressure hydrogen needs to be accumulated prior to dispensing. In fact, it would not be economical to have all the required compression carried out only when dispensing is underway.

Project partners investigated the compression and buffering function for the refuelling of 70-MPa (700 bar) passenger vehicles. This encompassed all the necessary activities for advancing a novel hydraulics-based compression and buffering system that is highly cost-effective and reliable from technology

readiness level 3 (experimentally proven concept) to technology readiness level 6 (technology demonstrated in a relevant environment).

A new approach

Hydrexia has worked closely with UMW Toyota in Malaysia to provide the comprehensive hydrogen application solution needed for this event. Hydrexia was chosen to be a partner based on considerations of its solution and equipment safety, functionality, and its ability to deliver in a short period of time.

“We are excited and honoured to work with UMW Toyota on this project, where we can leverage our technological and solution strengths to add values to Toyota’s journey towards carbon neutrality,” said George Gan, the global sales vice president, and the general manager for Southeast Asia at Hydrexia. “Going forward, we will continue to work with Toyota to serve its needs for hydrogen application solutions in ASEAN countries.”

As a leading hydrogen technology solution provider in China, Hydrexia has expanded its footprint to

overseas markets in recent years with business operations in Southeast Asia, Europe, the US and Australia.

Founded in 1980, UMW Toyota offers world-class quality products and services that meet customers’ needs in the most cost-efficient way.

The company adopts the Toyota Way as its core value in everything that they do, developing a highly committed and capable workforce with strong safety awareness, and contributing to the community by promoting the environment. and enhancing community service.

Hydrogen storage and transport technology plays a critical role in driving the development of the hydrogen industry.

Hydrexia’s unique storage and transport products are continuing to attract global customers, says the company.

To date, Hydrexia has expanded its business footprint to various global markets including Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the US.

DIESEL GENSETS DESIGNED TO SERVE EMERGENCY POWER DEMANDS IN INDIA

Commercial buildings in India such as malls, hospitals, data centres, and industries have high energy demands. They require an uninterrupted power supply to run their critical systems and ensure smooth operations.

However, power outages can cause significant damage to these businesses, resulting in loss of data, equipment damage, and even patient fatalities.

For instance, a hospital without power can lead to life-threatening situations for patients on ventilators, critical surgeries, and other medical procedures. Similarly, data centres require continuous power to ensure their servers’ and critical data’s integrity and availability.

Diesel gensets provide an excellent solution to the problem of power outages. These generators are designed to supply power to buildings during blackouts or insufficient grid supply.

The gensets run on diesel, readily available and more accessible to store than other fuel types. Diesel gensets are also relatively easy to install and maintain, making them popular among commercial building owners.

Diesel gensets have many advantages over other types of generators. They provide reliable power backup for extended periods, making them ideal for large commercial buildings with high power demands.

They are also cost-effective compared to other fuel types, such as natural gas or propane. Diesel gensets are also highly efficient, making them ideal for large commercial buildings. They consume less fuel, emit fewer pollutants, and have a longer lifespan than other types of generators.

Several factors need to be considered when choosing a diesel generator for commercial use. These factors include power requirements, duration, placement, and maintenance schedule.

* Power requirements: Commercial buildings have varying power demands depending on their size, operations, and equipment. Therefore, it’s essential to determine the power requirements before selecting the genset’s size and capacity.

* Duration : The duration of power outages varies, and so does the genset’s fuel capacity. Selecting a genset with enough fuel capacity to run for the desired duration is crucial. This will ensure an uninterrupted power supply until the grid supply is restored.

* Placement: The genset’s placement is critical in ensuring its efficiency and safety. Ensuring the genset is installed in a well-ventilated area with enough clearance to prevent overheating or fire hazards is essential.

* Maintenance schedule: Like any other equipment, diesel gensets require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance. A maintenance schedule should be developed and followed to prevent breakdowns and ensure the genset’s longevity.

Diesel gensets have become an intrinsic part of commercial buildings in India. They provide reliable power backup during power outages, ensuring business continuity and preventing revenue loss.

However, choosing a suitable genset with reliable engines is essential to avoid future mishaps.

Baudouin India’s commercial generators are regarded as a perfect solution for commercial building owners looking for a reliable and cost-effective power backup system.

The company has been India’s leading genset manufacturer for the last 100 years.

Baudouin’s generators are designed to provide reliable power backup for commercial buildings with high energy demands.

With their European technology, excellent TOC, and globally trusted brand name, Baudouin India is the perfect partner for businesses looking for reliable and efficient power backup solutions.

Power outages are common, especially in regions of the world with an unstable power grid. For

large commercial buildings, frequent power outages can cause significant economic damage to businesses. These outages disrupt operations, resulting in lost productivity and revenue loss. Hence having a reliable and alternative source of power is always prudent. This is where diesel gensets come in.
