The Southeast Asia data centre market is among the fastestdeveloping markets worldwide and is led by increased cloud adoption, the advent of 5G, and the ready available of effective and efficient backup power sources found in today’s generator sets. Southeast Asia data center market is expected to grow at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 5.97% during 2022-2027. Several data centres in China, Malaysia and Indonesia are likely to be equipped with N+N or 2N redundancy for power infrastructure with more redundancy for UPS and generator systems. The demand for DRUPS (Diesel Rotary UPS) systems is growing in the market, which will add significant revenue growth to vendors operating in South East Asia. This research is also supported by conclusions from 6Wresearch, in its study on the South-East Asia diesel Genset market. Its analysts predict that the market size will grow at roughly the same amount up to 2024. According to 6Wresearch the THE GROWTH IN ASIA’S commercial and manufacturing sectors account for the major DATA CENTRES AND THE revenue share in the overall diesel genset market. DEMAND FOR BACKUP “Diesel gensets are in high POWER SUPPLIES HAVE demand among end-users as a reliable source of standby power MATCHED TRAJECTORIES.” during power outages,” says the report. Additionally, growing FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) in the commercial sector in several South-East Asian countries will lead to substantial growth in the social infrastructure segment of these nations. Certain key applications such as offices, educational buildings and healthcare all require diesel gensets from the market for the forseeable future. Amongst all South-East Asian countries, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam are expected to register the highest market sharebetween 2022-24. Poor grid infrastructure and fluctuating electricity supply feed the demand for diesel gensets in these countries, says 6Wresearch. Some of the key provider companies in this sector include - Caterpillar, Cummins, Denyo, Huutoan, Komatsu, Kohler, Mitsubishi, Yanmar, and MTU. A considerable increase in demand for electricity in the Southeast Asia amongst Asian nations such as Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar and strong economic growth in countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippineshave been noted. This is matched by the development of infrastructures to the extent that the expansion in data centres and in backup power demand currently have matched trajectories.

DATA CENTRES
APRIL 2022
COMBINED COOLING, HEATING AND POWER SUPPLY SYSTEMS FOR CHINA DATA CENTRES
D
ata centres play a fundamental role in the functioning of businesses in today’s connected world. Servers and devices for storing, processing and distributing large amounts of data are housed here, and users of this data must be able to access it remotely and in real time at any time. It is understandable that a stable power supply as well as reliable cooling of the servers are two of the major challenges that must be carefully considered during construction and operation. One of the world’s largest mobile communications providers, China United Network Communications Group Co, or China Unicom for short, has taken a new path. Among other things, the company operates a cloud data center in Deqing, in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang. Located around 200 kilometres southwest of the Shanghai metropolis, it is the first data centre of a communications operator in China to rely on natural gas-based combined cooling, heating and power supply systems. The core generating facilities of the project are seven MWM TCG 2032 V16 gas-fired generator sets. This is the largest genset manufactured in Germany under the MWM brand and provides stable power and heat supply in projects worldwide. The project is designed based on the principle of “determining power generation based on cold capacity”, and uses natural gas to fuel the MWM gasfired generator sets to generate electricity for the grid. The high-temperature flue gas and cylinder liner water discharged from the generator sets enters a lithium bromide absorption unit to produce chilled water for air-conditioning purposes. Meanwhile, a chilled water storage tank operates online in real time as a redundant configuration of the chilled water system to ensure the refrigeration unit operates as normal. The system can provide a highly reliable and continuous power supply, and also provides effective cooling for the data centre. The seven generator sets generate 225 million kWh of electricity and provide 228 million kWh of cooling power per year, saving a significant amount of energy and substantially reducing emissions.
“
THE SEVEN GENERATOR SETS GENERATE 225 MILLION KWH OF ELECTRICITY AND PROVIDE 228 MILLION KWH OF COOLING POWER PER YEAR, SAVING A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF ENERGY AND SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCING EMISSIONS. THIS SHOWS YOU BUILD A CLEAN, LOW-CARBON, SECURE AND EFFICIENT SMART ENERGY SYSTEM THROUGH THE USE OF GAS GENERATOR SETS. www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
The MWM gas generator sets of the TCG 2032 series are perfectly geared to the challenges of a dynamic market environment. In the power range of 3,000 – 4,500 kWel reliability, flexibility, efficiency and environmental compatibility are ensured along with low life-cycle costs. In this way, they meet the high requirements of a wide range of applications and are highly profitable. With MWM, customers can benefit from more than 150 years of experience in gas engine technology and energy production. The optimised maintenance concept with cylinder units simplifies accessibility and, along with the reduction of the number of different parts, minimises the time required for maintenance. This saves up to 20 % in service costs. At the same time customers can profit from up to 30% less lubricating oil consumption compared to other generator sets. Thanks to the extended service intervals, the TCG 2032 runs up to 200 hours longer per annum than comparable products. The major overhaul is scheduled after 80,000 operating hours. The particle-free combustion with chamber plugs extends the service intervals for the exhaust gas heat exchanger and reduces service costs compared to other combustion methods. Major components such as pistons, conrods, spark plugs and cylinder heads have been improved to withstand the greater power output and
and deliver increased electrical efficiency. The interaction of all components has been improved even further. All components relevant for efficiency and power output are monitored by the TEM (Total Electronic Management). The new, upgraded wastegate in particular ensures a more efficient operation with changing conditions. This is also the case when the gas composition is fluctuating – thanks to fast response times due to the temperature monitoring for each cylinder. TEM not only controls the engine, but the entire system, including heat extraction. The high-pressure turbocharger A140 with an improved wastegate allows operation with a broader air intake temperature range and up to higher altitudes. The energy needs of the data centre (DC) industry continue to grow at a brisk pace. In the past, preferred DC locations were near inexpensive, reliable power sources. Today, such locations are more difficult to come by, and pressure is mounting to find alternate solutions that will be less demanding on the grid, particularly when electrical demand is high. Critical facilities have more choices than ever for ensuring an uninterrupted electricity supply. Today, gas gensets like the MWM TCG 2032 are a good alternative when it comes to reliable power supply at a good total cost of ownership. www.mwm.net

CONTROL SYSTEMS
APRIL 2022
PROJECT INVOLVING 10 PARALLEL & GRIDCONNECTED GENSETS HAS BEEN COMPLETED
S
MARTGEN (ZHENGZHOU) TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. specialises in producing intelligent control system for engine, generator and dual power supply, as well as related products, and concentrating on design, research and development, manufacture, sale and services. In the course of a recent contract a customer in China asked for 10 gensets to installed - and then divided into five groups: two units of each group needed to be connected in parallel. Smartgen also had to provide five step-up transformers to boost power to 400V to 10kV respectively. Five groups of generators needed to be connected in parallel synchronously through five groups of bustie switches, and then connected in parallel with 10kV mains. Smartgen’s solution was to choose the HGM9510 for the 10 gensets parallel arrangement. The HGM9580 controller was selected for 5 groups of bus join cabinet, and the HGM9560 controller was selected for generator bus and mains parallel. Due to the genset distribution, the generator room and diesel high voltage distribution room were too far - MSC communication involved the installation of CANbus relay module SGCAN300 (CAN BUS to optical fiber). Following installation, when the mains is connected to the grid, the HGM9560 gen close/open key needed to be pressed manually to close load breaker, then the HGM9510 could be scheduled to start. The HGM9580 has been designed to automatically close the bustie switch synchronously at the same time. Finally, the genset and mains parallel system had to operate synchronously, producing load outputs according to preset active power output percentages supplied with the HGM9560. When the mains is showing potential abnormalities (if the power supply drops. for example), the HGM9560 will automatically schedule the genset to start. When the genset closes normally, the HGM9580 will automatically close bustie switch in turn. Thanks to SMARTGEN’s design after the external grid-connection/isolated grid knob is switched to isolated grid, the load switch will automatically close, and the generator supplies power for load (generator takes all loads). After debugging, this project was completed successfully, reports the company. A company spokesman comments: “The system is running and stable and its performance has won the praise of the customer.”
“
“SmartGen currently has upgraded its parallel controller - the HGM9510N has passed UL certification for your choice,” he concludes. SMARTGEN’s HGM9510 controller is designed for manual/auto parallel system generators with similar or different capacity. is suitable for single unit constant power output and mains paralleling. It allows automatic start/ stop, parallel running, data measurement, alarm protection as well as remote control, remote measurement and remote communication function. It is fitted with an LCD display, optional Chinese, English and other languages interface, and it is reliable and easy to use. Utilizing the GOV (Engine Speed Governor) and AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) control function, the controller is able to synchronize and share load automatically; it can be used to parallel with other HGM9510 controller. The HGM9510 controller also monitors the engine, indicating the operational status and fault conditions accurately. When abnormal condition occur, it splits bus and shuts down the genset, simultaneously the exact failure mode information is indicated by the LCD
display on the front panel. The powerful 32-bit Microprocessor contained within the module allows for precision parameters measuring, fixed value adjustment, time setting and set value adjusting. Majority parameters can be configured from front panel, and all parameters can be configured by USB interface (or RS485) to adjust via PC. It can be used widely in all types of automatic gen-set control system with compact structure, advanced circuits, simple connections and high reliability. The HGM9580 Bus Tie Bus Parallel Unit, on the other hand, is designed for manual/auto parallel system which composed by multi-way bus and multi-way bus. This has been designed to allow automatic parallel running function. It comes fitted with an LCD display, graphic display, optional Chinese, English & other languages interfaces. www.smartgen.cn
SMARTGEN’S HGM9510 CONTROLLER IS DESIGNED FOR MANUAL/AUTO PARALLEL SYSTEM GENERATORS WITH SIMILAR OR DIFFERENT CAPACITY. IT IS ALSO SUITABLE FOR SINGLE UNIT CONSTANT POWER OUTPUT AND MAINS PARALLELING. “ www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

THE MEGA-CONTRACT: 59 GENSETS INSTALLED AT A MINING PROJECT BASED IN ASIA
L
ees is a worldwide company which specialises in the manufacturing of a wide range of generator sets, from 8kVA to 4000kVA. In September 2021 LEES provided nine 880kVA containerised gensets and 50 20-500kVA silent gensets for use at a mining company site located in China. What is special about the gensets? According to the company, the LEES canopy over each genset is said to make use of a ‘unique deep bucket design’ to reduce the noise level with high quality flameretardant and sound-absorbing sponge. They are also designed to take in air from above, which neatly avoids taking in dust from the ground, says LEES. The result of these design features is to keep the genset interiors clean and extend the lifespan of each of the generator sets. A company spokesman commented: “In the generator area, we offer solutions for every kind of power supply demand: energy where the national grid is not available, energy where it is necessary to operate without interrupting, energy for home, working and entertaining. “Lees owns high technological experience and the vertically-integrated manufacturing processes which ensure that all our products are designed and delivered with top of quality and high performance.” He explains: “All LEES products are dedicated to the most demanding markets, we provide customized solutions such as high-voltage, paralleled, super silent or trailer generator. “We also provide comprehensive power solutions, as a true symbol of our experience built under one mission - to be the most professional power solution expert available, with reliable products, quality service and strong support.”

Mines, like construction sites, require prime running generators to be the main source of electricity. The generators for mines also power major mining equipment such as drills, lifts, excavators, conveyor belts, lights and power tools. Diesel generators are a piece of advanced machinery which are frequently used by industry to generate electric energy. The engines are powered by diesel and through the combustion of the fuel turn an alternator to generate power. They are the most commonly found in places where there is no connection available to the power grid. This would include most mining operations. Mining operations prefer to have independent electricity that is reliable and scalable. Advantages of diesel generators * Reliability Diesel generators are known for doing one thing, generating electricity under harsh conditions to power mining projects. Diesel generators offer roundthe-clock operation and are robust machines designed to deliver power to serve your mine. * Versatility Diesel generators are capable of handling any number of projects, regardless of the size. This makes them an ideal choice for mining. * Durability When compared to their natural gas counterparts, diesel generators need much less maintenance and service. Breakdowns occur less frequently. This means greater uptime for your mining
project to remain operational for days, weeks, and months. * Fuel Consumption Diesel compared to natural gas is recognised for having a superior energy density to volume ratio. Diesel generators are known for their efficiency being more efficient than by 60%. They will burn half the amount of fuel as a natural gas generator, while still providing the same energy output, suggests some research. These machines are effective thermal solutions for power generation in the mining industry. Diesel generators provide 70% of all power needed in mining operations by heavy-duty equipment worldwide. Other generator projects In September 2021 LEES reports that it provided a batch of 2MW 10.5kV high voltage diesel gensets for a key semiconductor factory based in China. These gensets are said to be easy to operate with modular automatic control systems. In the same month the company provided a batch of 1400kVA diesel gensets for factory use in China. The gensets have the advantage of a separate design of the radiator and the engine , making it convenient for any disassembly and replacement. LEES operates globally and has a reputation for the manufacture of a wide range of generator sets, from 8kVA to 4000kVA. In the generator arena it offers solutions for every kind of power supply demand: energy where the national grid is not available. leesgenerator.com
