The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has acknowledged the significant challenges involved in matching energy demands with sustainable supply during the transition to a lower-carbon economy.

Reducing global greenhouse gas emissions is high on the global agenda and the national leaders are pledged to pursue alternative fuel pathways, shifting from fossil fuel–based energy systems toward greener energy sources.

Asia still a way to go to achieve a balance of economic growth, energy affordability and energy availability. Much of the future energy mix of emerging ASEAN countries will rely on fossil fuels to power economic development. However, there are pathways to ensure the future of economic development with sustainable energy use to harmonize economic growth, social well-being, and environmental sustainability. Renewable energy is a leading solution.

Renewable or ‘green’ hydrogen has been championed as a clean energy source for the ASEAN region’s energy mix in the foreseeable future.

ISSUE #88 EDITOR’S NOTES HYDROGEN IS A VERSATILE FUEL. IT PRESENTS UNTAPPED POTENTIAL AS A CLEAN ENERGY SOURCE.”

Hydrogen is a versatile fuel that can be produced from many energy sources. It presents untapped potential as a clean energy source.

Currently, annual global production of hydrogen is around 120 million tons, of which two-thirds is pure hydrogen and one-third is mixed with other gases. Hydrogen can be produced from either fossil fuels or renewables.

Currently, about 95% of hydrogen is produced from coal and gas without carbon capture and sequestration/storage (CCS), known as ‘gray’ hydrogen. Only small amounts are produced with CCS, known as ‘blue’ hydrogen. The gasification of coal can also be used to produce hydrogen, but in terms of its carbon footprint, this process emits roughly four times as much carbondioxide per kilogram (kg) of hydrogen as using natural gas feedstock. Around 5% of total hydrogen production is from renewables, or green hydrogen. Two well-known processes to extract hydrogen fuel are steam methane reforming, mainly applied to extract hydrogen from fossil fuels, and electrolysis of water, applied to extract hydrogen from water using electricity. Steam methane reforming is the process used to harvest hydrogen from methane through high temperature steam at 700–1,000 degrees Celsius. Most hydrogen production occurs through this process, which is the most mature technology. What is clear is that demand for hydrogen is likely to accellerate. ASIA’S NATIONS EMBRACE THE CHALLENGE OF USING HYDROGEN

MORE COAL-FIRED POWER PLANTS FOR CHINA

New sources suggest that provincial governments in China approved plans to build 8.63 gigawatts (GW) of new coal power plants in the first quarter of 2022 alone, making up approximately 46.5% of the total capacity approved.

According to a recent report, China will need to close nearly 600 coal-fired power plants over the next decade in order to reach its goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060.

China has the greatest number of coal-fired power stations of any country or territory in the world.

As of 2022, there were 1,110 operational coal power plants on the Chinese Mainland. This was nearly four times the number of such power stations in India, which ranked second.

Datang Tuoketue is the largest operational coal power plant by capacity in China. The power station is located in Inner Mongolia and at 6.7 gigawatts is also the largest coal power plant in the world.

China has proven coal reserves which are equivalent to 34.9 times its annual consumption. With current consumption levels and excluding any reserves, it has about 35 years left.

China imports 62% of its coal from Indonesia. China and India together import roughly 80% of their coal. China accounted for 15% of total US coal exports in 2021.

CHINA’S SPACE STATION IS INVOLVED IN GENERATING ENERGY FROM ORBIT

China’s space station is directly involved in a new project to collect solar power from space and send it to Earth in a highenergy microwave beam, according to a senior scientist.

The Chinese space station Tiangong - which means “Heavenly Palace” - became fully operational when the last major service module, Mengtian, docked this month. Some space scientists have suggested Tiangong - the largest infrastructure in orbit owned and run exclusively by a single country at present - can change the pace or direction of the space race.

Onboard systems will allow it to collect solar power from space and send it to Earth in a high-energy microwave beam to power military equipment or remote outposts.

The Space Solar Power Station (SSPS), a hotspot technology, is a space-based power generation system used to collect solar energy before converting it to electricity and then to microwaves. The sunlight is brighter outside the atmosphere and shines almost all day.

Next, the energy in microwaves will be transmitted and harvested by the receiving antenna either in space or on the Earth’s surface, which converts microwaves back to electricity. A research team from Xidian University has unveiled the world’s first full-chain, system-wide ground verification for space solar power station this month with its OMEGA-SSPS ground test verification system.

1,500 KVA GENSET SUPPLIED TO A BABYWEAR MANUFACTURER IN TRINCOMALEE, SRI LANKA

TPL

The 1,500 kVA diesel generator was installed at the Jay Jay Mills Lanka factory in October 2022. The CUMMINS C1675D5A 1500 kVA Three Phase Open Diesel Generator offers the following benefits: Standby: 1675 kVA / 1340 kW - Prime: 1500 kVA / 1200 kW

Driven by a Cummins KTA50-GS8, the set features a reliable alternator: the Stamford PI734D, Voltage: 380440V, Frequency: 50Hz, Amps Per Phase: 2412 and a key Control Panel: PowerCommand 3.3.

The KTA50-Series benefits from years of technical development and improvement to bring customers an innovative and future proof diesel engine which keeps pace with ever-changing generator set requirements, says Cummins.

Recognized globally for its performance under even the most severe climatic conditions, the KTA50-Series is widely acknowledged as one of the most robust and cost-effective diesel engine in its power range for the generator set market. Features include:

* Pistons are dual Ni-resist, aluminium alloy, ground and shaped to compensate for thermal expansion, which assures a precise fit at all normal operating temperatures.

*Coolpac integrated design - products are supplied complete with cooling package and air cleaner kit for a complete power package. Each component has been specifically developed and rigorously tested for G-Drive products, ensuring high performance, durability and

reliability.

*Aftercooler – Large capacity integral aftercoolers are supplied with cooling water separate from the engine jacket.

This provides cooler, denser intake air for more complete combustion and reduced engine stresses for longer life and low exhaust emissions.

* Cooling System – A two pump, two loop system must be employed; i.e. the engine jacket is cooled by one radiator or heat exchanger and the aftercoolers are cooled by a separate radiator or heat exchanger. An interesting aspect of the componetry includes the specification of the Stamford PI734D alternator. Newage Stamford industrial generators meet the requirements of BS EN 60034 and the relevant sections of other national and international standards such as BS5000, VDE 0530, NEMA MG1-32, IEC60034, CSA C22.2-100, AS1359.

The STAMFORD PI range of synchronous ac generators are brushless with a rotating field. They are separately excited by the STAMFORD Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG). This is a shaft mounted, high frequency, pilot exciter which provides a constant supply of clean power via the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) to the main exciter. The main exciter output is fed to the main rotor, through a full wave bridge rectifier, protected by surge suppression.

Looking at voltage regulators

The PI range generators, complete with a PMG, are available with one of two AVRs. Each AVR has soft start voltage build up and built in protection against sustained over-excitation, which will de-excite the generator after a minimum of 8 seconds.

Underspeed protection (UFRO) is also provided on both AVRs. The

UFRO will reduce the generator output voltage proportional to the speed of the generator below a presettable level.

The MX341 AVR is two-phase sensed with a voltage regulation of ± 1 %. The MX321 AVR is 3 phase rms sensed with a voltage regulation of 0.5% rms.

The UFRO circuit has adjustable slope and dwell for controlled recovery from step loads. An over voltage protection circuit will shutdown the output device of the AVR, it can also trip an optional excitation circuit breaker if required.

As an option, short circuit current limiting is available with the addition of current transformers.

Both the MX341 and the MX321 need a generator mounted current transformer to provide quadrature droop characteristics for load sharing during parallel operation.

Provision is also made for the connection of the STAMFORD power factor controller, for embedded applications, and a remote voltage trimmer.

All generator stators are wound to 2/3 pitch. This eliminates triplen (3rd, 9th, 15th) harmonics on the voltage waveform and is found to be the optimum design for trouble-free supply of non-linear loads.

The 2/3 pitch design avoids excessive neutral currents which are sometimes seen with higher winding pitches. A fully connected damper winding reduces oscillations during paralleling. This winding, with the 2/3 pitch and carefully selected pole and tooth designs, ensures very low levels of voltage waveform distortion.

Standard generators feature a main stator with 6 ends brought out to the terminals, which are mounted on the frame at the non-drive end of the generator.

TWO 1,650 KVA DIESEL-POWERED GENSETS BOUGHT BY A BEVERAGE COMPANY IN CAMBODIA

TEKSAN has successfully installed and commissioned two Teksan diesel gensets equipped with 1650kva Standby Perkins engines and Leroy Somer alternators with synchronized systems. These were installed in September 2022 for the IMB Inter Mattrid Beverage Company Ltd. in Cambodia.

The Model - 4012-46TAG2A engines are part of the Perkins 4000 Series engine family. They are manufactured for the power industry with focus on the heavy-duty industrial market.

The 46-litre, turbo charged air-to-water cooled, 12- cylinder 60 degree Vee form engine features exceptional power-to-weight ratio. This unit is recommended for a wide range of temperatures and has a jet cooling system for the pistons.

The module has been designed to display warnings, shutdowns & engine status information all on a back-lit LCD screen. Engine shutdown features include high engine temperature, low oil pressure, and low fuel level warning and much more.

With models from 6 to 16 cylinders, the 4000 Series diesel engines are considered the real powerhouse of electricity generation. Diesel models achieve regulated and unregulated emissions standards globally.

The ElectropaK diesel engines in the 4012 range come complete with radiator and air cleaner. Models in the range are either turbocharged and air-to-air chargecooled or turbocharged and air-to-water chargecooled. Giving 1250-1880 kVA engine power, the 4012 range diesel engines include a model to suit a wide variety of power generation needs – prime or standby. These engines have proven reliability in prime and standby installations in all of the key sectors.

The two Teksan diesel gensets have been installed as part of an initiative by the the Inter-Mattrid Beverage (Cambodia) Co Ltd. Its US$78 million brewery and beverage plant was recently approved by the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC). The multi-million Dollar brewery is being constructed in Dei Ith commune’s Sdao Kanleng II village, Kien Svay district in Kandal province. The new brewery project is expected to create as many as 550 jobs.

An Inter-Mattrid Beverage sales representative has said the company is currently in the process of building the plant.

He said all employees are undergoing training in preparation for the facility’s launch.

“Beer is all the rage in our country, people like to drink. No matter what kind of party it may be, there must be beer, especially at large functions,” he told The Phnom Pehn Post newspaper.

According to the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation this will be the Kingdom’s 13th brewery/beverage plant.

Earlier in 2020, Cambodian Vattanac Brewery Co Ltd announced its plans to launch a new $87 million brewery in Phnom Penh, while Hanuman Beverages Co Ltd received the approval from Council for the Development of Cambodia for a $160.6 million brewery to be built in Kandal province’s Ang Snuol district.

The TEKSAN generator sets sold to Cambodia feature state of the art technology and have compliance with ISO 8528, ISO 3046, BS 5514, DIN 6271 standards.

These engines offer low fuel consumption, accurate speed setting and order, and mount to the fuel pump. They also have the option of supply with mechanical or electronic type governors.

to bad weather, animal damage to power lines, a brownout, a blackout, or scheduled maintenance.

Proper sizing of diesel generators is critical to avoid low-load or a shortage of power. Sizing is complicated by the characteristics of modern electronics, specifically non-linear loads. In size ranges around 60 MW and above, an open cycle gas turbine is more efficient at full load than an array of diesel engines, and far more compact, with comparable capital costs.

For regular part-loading, even at these power levels, diesel arrays are sometimes preferred to open cycle gas turbines, due to their superior efficiencies, reports TEKSAN.

Diesel generators can be utilized as standalone, emergency, standby, and peak shaving units because of their availability, quick start up, reliability, fast ramp up, durability, etc. www.teksan.com www.perkins.com

NEW 2.4 MW GENERATOR INSTALLED IN A QINGDAO SKYSCRAPER HEADQUARTERS, CHINA

AKSA POWER GENERATION (CHINA) was recently involved in the successful installation of a 2.4 MW generator in a building being used as corporate headquarters in Qingdao, China. Aksa Generators manufactures gasoline, diesel, natural gas powered gensets, marine generating sets, lighting towers and generating sets hardware.

The company is one of the biggest generating sets manufacturer of the world thanks to its continuous investments and technical developments.

The client - based at the Qingdao Landmark Centerchose to develop the building as a mixed use development highrise structure in Qingdao, China.

The complex consists of 3 towers with the main tower being the Qingdao Landmark Tower which is a 327.3 m or 1,074 ft tall skyscraper under construction in Qingdao, China. Upon its completion in 2022, it will be the second tallest building in Qingdao behind the Haitian Center Tower 2 when complete.

The building is located in a complex - a group of buildings which are designed and built as set pieces reflecting a greater development. At 2.4MW the AKSA generator in the structure is capable of powering up to 1,000 homes by comparison.

The power provided by the genset is capable of running several data centre sections also housed in the structure, as well as the elevators, HVAC systems, fans, heaters, fire & security features including monitoring, floor-to-floor lighting, internet links, telecommunications and other audio-visual facilities in the tower.

Electrical systems in high-rise buildings like this are typically designed with multiple feeds and a large standby generation capacity.

The buildings in the Qingdao complex also include extensive cabling and routing, as well as inverters and batteries for backup power. Because of the high voltage of the electricity, they also feature the installation of solar panels and inverters on the roof and side areas.

The electricity supply to the skyscraper - both mains and bakcup sections - feed the emergency lights. It is possible to use the same voltage for different areas and this is done in some buildings in China, but it is not advisable.

A step-down transformer provided by the utility company reduces standard line potential to dual voltage systems, which pass through electric meters and master switches which record a subscriber’s usage. Different categories of use require different voltages, and each pair of voltage has a separate distribution system of

wiring. In addition, each pair is further broken down into circuits similar to those in a electrical distribution in a building found in the west.

The Qingdao Landmark Center’s step-down transformer converts standard line potential to dual voltage systems. These systems then pass through electric meters and master switches to record the subscriber’s usage. Two different voltages are required for various categories of use. Each voltage pair is then separated into different circuits. The conduits are installed throughout the building, including in the common areas.

About Aksa Power Generation

The company hit the headlines back in 2012 when it opened one of the largest genset factories in the world. With this move Aksa secured its

place among the biggest genset companies in global market thanks to the new 100,000m² factory. In order to expand production and increase capacity, Aksa subsequently provided additional investment for factory plant in 2016. The second phase workshop is mainly used for sheet metal processing, reports the company.

The new factory produces 24,000 units of diesel gensets annually. In addition, it has 16 test rooms which are equipped with the latest technology and have totally 25 MVA test capacity.

Being one of the first manufacturers of natural gas generator sets of the world, Aksa Generators feels it has the technical edge when it comes to synchronized sets.

100 KW OF SOLID-OXIDE FUEL CELLS POWERED SOLELY BY HYDROGEN FOR ULSAN, SOUTH KOREA

Bloom Energy is behind the delivery of a consignment of 100kW hydrogen fuel cells to South Korea.

Bloom Energy has announced that, in collaboration with its Korean partner, SK Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., an affiliate of SK Group, it has successfully deployed 100 kilowatts of these solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFC) powered solely by hydrogen in Ulsan, South Korea, generating zero-carbon onsite electricity.

Hydrogen fuel cells, which convert hydrogen into electricity through a non-combustion electrochemical process, are increasingly recognized by climate experts and governments across the globe as an essential tool for full decarbonization.

Bloom Energy first announced its initial plans to enter the commercial hydrogen market in July 2020, which includes an intended 1 megawatt hydrogen-powered Energy Server installation with SK E&C by 2022.

“This deployment marks a significant milestone not only for Bloom, but for the future of hydrogen-based power generation,” said KR Sridhar, founder, chairman and CEO of Bloom Energy.

“While Bloom’s hydrogen story started more than two decades ago, it’s now the right market timing to introduce hydrogen-powered solutions and help countries meet their net-zero emissions goals.

“We’re proud of our partnership with SK E&C. Together, we are well-positioned to play an important role in the global hydrogen economy.”

The SOFCs use hydrogen byproduct generated by SK Advanced to create power without CO2 emissions.

The hydrogen-powered fuel cells are supplied, operated and maintained by Bloom Energy. Upon completion of the pilot project, Bloom Energy’s hydrogen SOFCs will support South Korea’s

Changwon RE100 initiative, as well as many other projects.

The RE100 is a global renewable energy initiative led by the Climate Group to accelerate the move toward zero-carbon electricity grids.

As reported in November 2020, Bloom Energy and SK E&C won a competitive bid for the Changwon RE100 to supply Bloom Energy’s hydrogen-powered SOFCs and hydrogen electrolyzers to an industrial complex there.

“Bloom’s state-of-the-art hydrogen fuel cell, which represents the pinnacle of power generation efficiency and safety, will allow us to provide clean electricity that will help Korea reach carbon neutrality by 2050,” said Jason Ahn, CEO of SK E&C.

“We look forward to playing a leading role in the SK Group’s eco-friendly business expansion, as well as the Korean government’s Green New Deal and carbon neutrality policy.”

In addition, Bloom Energy intends to supply its solid-oxide electrolyzer cells (SOEC), which are designed to produce green hydrogen via solar and battery, to South Korea in 2022 as part of the RE100 project.

The green hydrogen produced by the SOEC, which is created through electrolysis by converting water and renewable electricity into hydrogen without carbon emissions, will be used to power the hydrogen SOFC.

How do Bloom Energy’s hydrogen fuel cells work?

Instead of precious metals, Bloom Energy’s fuel cells use wafers made from sand which are stained with proprietary ink.

As fuel passes over the sand wafers, it mixes with oxygen, creating a chemical reaction which produces electricity. The chemical reaction takes place at about 800 degrees Celsius (1,500 degrees Fahrenheit).

Dozens of countries have committed to net-zero emissions goals in the coming decades. Hydrogen is required to reach these deep decarbonization goals. It is estimated that 30% of energy-related CO2 emissions are hardto-abate with electricity alone, providing a massive opportunity for hydrogen.

The hydrogen economy is advancing across numerous sectors including power generation, transportation, industrial energy, building heat and power and feedstock.

Bloom Energy’s Solid Oxide technology is uniquely positioned - says the company - to accelerate both the production and the usage of hydrogen.

Bloom Energy’s Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) have been deployed in 100s of applications across healthcare, data centres, critical manufacturing, retailers and more.

GAS GENSETS GENERATE ENERGY FROM KITCHEN WASTE IN CHINA

MWM’s recent projects in China show the company’s capabilities in producing energy from waste treatment projects.

MWM gas gensets offer many advantages in terms of sustainable and clean decentralised energy supply. In addition to natural gas, they can be operated with a variety of biogases and reliably generate electricity, heat and, if required, cooling.

As the population grows, so does the amount of waste. At the same time, the challenges to disposing of it sensibly are increasing. In several recently installed projects in China, MWM gas gensets are helping to produce energy from kitchen waste.

Recently, the largest kitchen waste treatment project in China - ”Guangzhou Likeng comprehensive treatment plant” - was successfully connected to the grid for power generation.

The Likeng comprehensive treatment plant is currently the largest environmental protection project for kitchen waste treatment in China, with an average daily treatment capacity of about 1000 tons.

The project will treat about 350,000 tonnes of kitchen waste every year, with an estimated annual power generation of about 48 million kWh and a carbondioxide emission reduction of more than 15,000 tonnes per year.

The main processes of the project are “Pretreatment + Anaerobic digestion + Wastewater Treatment + Biogas Power Generation”. The kitchen waste containing a large amount of organic matter will produce biogas after anaerobic fermentation and decomposition. After purification by the pretreatment system, the biogas will enter the gas genset for power generation.

MWM distributor PAUWAY has provided three MWM TCG 2020 V20 biogas generating units (single unit output power of 2000kW) for the project.

All of the energy generated will be “self-utilised and surplus electricity connected to grid power.” PAUWAY is also in charge of the design and subsequent maintenance of all power systems for this project.

MWM supports sustainable development in

Qingdao

In Qingdao, China, kitchen waste will also be used to generate energy in the future.

“Two flat trucks carrying MWM gas gensets recently drove into a domestic waste comprehensive treatment park in Qingdao, officially kicking off the onsite construction phase of MWM distributor PAUWAY’s Qingdao kitchen waste power generation project.

In the next month, PAUWAY’s engineers will be responsible for the installation and commissioning of the equipment and help ensure the smooth operation of Qingdao’s first kitchen waste treatment project.

PAUWAY has delivered two MWM TCG 2020 V16 gas gensets for the project according to customer needs and field visits.

The power generation of a single generator unit is 1.56mW. After the units are put into operation, they

will meet the power demand in the park, and all the surplus power will be connected to the grid. It is estimated that the annual on-grid power will be about 25 million kWh, thus reducing carbon emissions by more than 3300 tons and saving about 666,667m2 of landfill land.

This waste comprehensive treatment park is an important part of Qingdao’s environmental sanitation infrastructure.

It undertakes the task of waste disposal in the main urban area and high-tech zone and has the important function of ensuring the normal operation of the city.

After the completion of the project, the daily treatment of waste can reach 500 tons, which will make up for the shortboard of waste terminal treatment capacity in Qingdao, and the waste treatment level will reach “domestic leading”, which will effectively promote the sustainable development of green and low-carbon in the city.

The MWM gas generator sets of the TCG 2020 series are perfectly geared to the challenges of a dynamic market environment. In the output range of 1,000–2,000 kWel, they meet the high requirements of a broad range of applications and guarantee efficiency, reliability, flexibility & environmental sustainability, together with low lifecycle costs and high profitability.
