Singapore’s projected total electricity supply capacity is estimated at 10,280MW for 2022, a 1,650MW drop from 2021’s 11,930MW, due to generation companies’ (gencos) refurbishment, mothball and retirement plans, EMA said last December. “Low electricity prices and the uncertain global economic climate due to the ongoing Covid-19 OMICRON pandemic have led to weak investor sentiment in building new capacity,” a EMA spokesman recently told the media. Dr Victor Nian, a senior research fellow at the National University of Singapore’s Energy Studies Institute, said one way to encourage investments in this area could be the introduction of a capacity market. Under such a scheme, GENCOS are paid for capacity ahead of delivery, complementing the current energy-only market which pays them for the electricity they produce.“This can help mitigate price uncertainty and volatility by providing additional sources of revenue to producers,” commented Dr Nian.
With the third highest population density in the world, the Republic of Singapore, must develop its power generation capacity to ensure that electricity supply remains reliable. Some of its existing power plants are near retirement and there is a greater demand for electricity than ever before because of emerging sectors such as electric vehicles, data centres and agri-technology.
As early as 2025 Singapore may require a new power generation capacity argues the Energy Market Authority (EMA). It is currently examining options to ensure Singapore’s power system remains reliable, sustainable

The project was completed on a very tight schedule, but the local Cummins dealer managed to supply eight 2000 kW Cummins QSV91G lean burn gas generators, along with this they provided support whilst the project was ongoing. The support ranged from deploying the equipment right up to when the machines were installed. To finish the installation of the lean burn gas generators, a standard control system was installed in each of the eight generators so that the machines could be continually monitored to ensure that they were performing as expected. In addition to this the local Cummins dealership offered support with the design process, installation and the commissioning of the Balance of Plant items. The Balance of Plant items includes equipment such as exhaust silencers, radiators and gas trains. This makes sure that the gas generators will continue to perform as expected at a reliable level no matter how severe the weather conditions around the plant.

All eight 2,000 kilowatt lean burn gas generators which were installed at the new 16 megawatt Myanmar power plant in 2021 have now run for exactly a year since commissioning with no problems. The QSV91G model lean burn gas generators were provided by Cummins. Until the installation Southern Myanmar had struggled with an electricity grid infrastructure which had been struggling to keep up with economic growth. Accordingly, in 2020 the government awarded Petro and Trans Co the tender to install a new 16megawatt gas powered power plant. To help deliver the installation, Petro and Trans Co called upon the local Cummins distributor partner, Cummins DKSH Myanmar. The distributor aided Petro and Trans Co with the development and finalisation of the project.
The hybrid industry - dubbed agrivoltaics - had 2.8 gigawatts of capacity installed in 2020, of which China accounted for about two-thirds, according to the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Germany. Initially, SPIC will install 100 megawatts of solar power on 800,000 square metres of rooftops, from which Zhengbang will derive rental income and electricity, according to the breeder’s filings. But Zhengbang has grander ambitions. It says it operates on more than 20,000 hectares of land across China, with a roofing area covering over 20 million square metres. The power company could eventually generate 10 gigawatts of solar, wind and other clean energy on its farmland.

CHINA LIKELY TO END BAN ON AUSTRALIAN COAL AND LIFT EMBARGO
AUGUST 2022NEWS 12 INDEPENDENT POWER ASIA
China has tested a groundbreaking technology that could one day wirelessly beam solar power from outer space down to Earth to harness limitless clean energy.
As a result of the coal ban, Beijing was forced to look to countries like Japan to buy Australian coal second-hand, sending import costs through the roof. The authorities in China had been paying as much as $590 per million tonnes of coal through the ban - compared to the $370 per million they were paying prior to the embargo. A blistering heatwave is now sweeping across southern China is threatening crops and adding strain to the local power grids, as the Asian nation becomes the latest region around the globe battling searing temperatures. In Shanghai the temperature is expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Cities in Sichuan and economic centres like Jiangsu and Zhejiang also issued red alerts after temperatures in parts of the region hit record levels. The heatwave will also likely boost power consumption further this summer as residents and business es turn on air conditioning to keep cool. Electricity use has already hit a record across several Chinese provinces, including Shandong and Henan in the north and Zhejiang in theSeveraleast. provinces in China are preparing “orderly consumption” plans for times when power supplies are running low.
The country benefits from the cost and effectiveness of diesel generators, with improved living standards increasing the demand for power backup devices. There is a also rapid growth in infrastructure, tele communication, and information technology (IT) and IT-enabled services.

BEAMING DOWN ENERGY FROM SPACE FOR CONVERSION TO THE GRID
China’s authorities are keen to study UK’s own Space Energy Initiative (SEI) which could see Britain set up the first power station in space by 2035. This will be made up of satellites with lightweight solar panels and a system of mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto the panels, generating around 3.4 GW of electricity on the satellite. Estimates suggest that by the mid-2040s the power generated from the space station could reach as much as 30GW, which would account for up to 30 percent of the UK’s current electricity demand.
The commercial and industrial sectors of emerging economies, the residential sector of developed economies, and the increasing need for power in defense operations are expected to create significant opportunities for market participants in the near future.
www.powermediagroup.co.ukwww.wipmagazines.com
China has created a model power station at reserach labs at Xidian University in Shaanxi to capture sunlight high above the ground. The captured sunlight is then converted into microwave beams which are then transmitted through the air to a receiver station on the ground. Here the microwaves are converted back to the form of electricity.
China accounted for the largest share in the market in 2019, with majority of the demand coming from across the nation and rising commercial office spaces and small-scale vendors. China is the leading generator sets market in the Asia-Pacific region owing to increasing infrastructure projects, widening power demand-supply gap, expansion of manufacturing facilities across the nation, and rising commercial office spaces.

Westwood, one of Kohler Power’s primary distributors in Hong Kong, worked closely with the data centre operator to assess its complete requirements at the new facility early inPreviously,2022. the data centre operator had relied entirely on traditional dynamic rotary uninterruptible power supply (DRUPS), but Westwood showed how a switch to KD the total cost of ownership over the longWestwoodterm. and Kohler provided combinations of generator packages, covering a full range of options with multiple ratings, voltages, and fuel systems.Afterdetailed technical evaluation across several meetings, the data centre operator selected Kohler’s KD2800-E generating set, with a 2500kVA Data Centre Continuous Rating at 11kV. This choice was based upon the low-emission performance of the KD Series generators, along with Westwood’s ability to integrate customised sets of mounted requirements. The race was on, then, to take the project forward in the designated timeframe. Kohler’s ability to take a one-stopshop approach to generator supply – from design and manufacture to testing and inspection, all under one roof – meant that it could take a fast data centre customer’s demands. Procurement teams at the Kohler plant in Singapore used the latest scheduling software, parts plan ning and stockholding analysis to deliver production visibility, giving timeframes could be met. Throughout the project, Kohler took a consultative approach to the testing. The project team worked closely with the engineering team to accommodate any technical changes and then with the testing department cations were met. This collaborative approach with the customer meant when necessary, such as deploying failureFrommode.theoutset of this data centre project, the customer wanted weekly updates covering essential criteria such as component delivery, generation set assembly and testing schedule.TheKohler team invested many extra hours, often late at night and across weekends, to ensure that all activities remained on track. The client travelled from Hong Kong to the Singapore plant for witness testing, while Kohler also deployed remote real-time viewing of testing activities. Kohler also managed data recording during all eight hours of continuous load tests.

Hong Kong is one of Southeast Asia’s principal center infrastructure. One of the largest carrier and cloud-neutral data center operators in the region was keen to extend its 70,000 square metre facility, switching from ageing rotary uninterruptible power supply to diesel generators as a means of reducing long-term maintenance costs. The challenge was to design in a high degree of customisation for the generators and manufacture them to extremely tight timelines. Indeed, a total of 29 generators were required to be delivered and installed within six months.
DATA CENTRES THE DATA CENTRE OPERATOR SELECTED KOHLER’S KD2800-E GENERATING SET, WITH A 2500KVA DATA CENTRE CONTINUOUS RATING AT 11KV. THE CUSTOMER’S CHOICE WAS BASED UPON THE SUPERIOR LOWEMISSION PERFORMANCE OF THE KD SERIES GENERATORS. “
As a result of these activities, all 29 units of the KD2800-E industrial diesel generators from the KOHLER KD Series were delivered within the allocated six-month timeframe. kohlerpower.com

Aneutrality by 2050, the government of South Korea is working to transition hydrogen to be a vital engine of economic growth and job creation. Their intent is to create a “hydrogen society” that utilises hydrogen as a key energy source for transportation and power generation. To accomplish this, the government implemented a strategy focused on laying legal foundations to promote hydrogen and the implementation of safety standards for facilities. Enter the Hydrogen Economy Promotion and Hy drogen Safety Management Act (‘Hydrogen Act’), an act passed into law by the Korean National South Korea’s hydrogen pilot cities are evaluat ing the application of hydrogen in several sectors, particularly that of the power generation. Power generation from hydrogen is especially of interest because a sizable portion of South Korea’s hydrogen needs are supplied from byproducts in petrochemical processes from South Korean companies.Becausethese companies produce hydrogen as a byproduct, the Hydrogen Act allows for such companies to be designated as “hydrogenspecialised,” granting them government support. One of such hydrogen specialized companies is Hyosung Heavy Industries (Hyosung).
