More than half of the planet lives in Asia. Six of the 10 largest nations in the world are in the Asia Pacific, and the region is playing an increasingly important role in the global economy, international security, and the world’s collective efforts to advance human development. It’s also true that Southeast Asia’s growth in electricity demand is among the fastest in the world In the region renewable energy only meets around 15% of demand. Overall higher temperatures are leading to an increased use of air-conditioning and peak demand for cooling systems could ENERGY DEMAND IN strain power systems The energy market in Southeast CHINA IS EXPECTED TO Asia has been growing rapidly. Overall demand has increased by BEGIN NEXT MONTH BUT 80% since 2000, with millions of A FULL RETURN WILL new customers gaining access to electricity. HAPPEN IN SEPTEMBER.” This is putting pressure on energy systems, and with much of the demand met by a doubling of fossil fuel use, CO2 emissions have also risen. At the same time the number of deaths linked to outdoor and household air pollution in Southeast Asia is expected to jump to more than 650,000 a year by 2040, up from around 450,000 in 2018, according to the International Energy Association (IEA). “Southeast Asia is set to have a major impact over the next two decades, adding the equivalent of Japan’s entire energy system to global demand. This rapid growth underscores the importance of Southeast Asian countries’ energy policies for their citizens, but also for the world,” says IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. Hopefully, once the nations of the world emerge from Coronavirus Lockdown the future will look brighter? Global carbon emissions from the fossil fuel industry could fall by a record 2.5bn tonnes this year, a reduction of 5%, as the coronavirus pandemic triggers the biggest drop in demand for fossil fuels on record. Energy demand in China, the world’s biggest importer of oil, is expected to begin recovering next month, four months after the outbreak in the Wuhan province. However it will not make a full return to normal levels until September at the earliest, suggest analysts.

Perkins engines are at the heart of 50 generator sets supplied to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) by Sterling and Wilson. The generator sets with their 4000 Series engines have been installed to provide prime power to Sri Lanka’s national grid. The CEB is the largest electricity company in Sri Lanka, with activities covering all parts of the electricity supply chain. It recently bolstered its network with the installation of 50 Perkin powered generator sets. The Sterling & Wilsonsupplied generator sets currently supply up to 50 MW of prime power. They are installed at three sites, two with 20 generator sets each and the third with 10. Huw Jones, service and support manager of Perkins distributor Mayphil, said: “The site represents one of the largest installations of 4000 Series engines I have seen in recent years.” The generator sets, he said, run parallel to the mainly hydro
and coal-powered grid and provide CEB with flexibility in maintaining a constant supply of electricity to its customers. Normal fluctuations in demand determine how many are running, and for how long, he added. Performance and reliability are key features of Perkins® 4000 Series engines. The engine supplied to CEB is a Perkins® 4012-46TAG0A. Mayphil, as the distributor for Sri Lanka – one of 10 territories where it represents Perkins – provides warranty support and preventive maintenance for CEB. It has already trained technicians specifically for 4000 Series engines and is planning further train-thetrainer courses at its newly opened facility in Colombo which houses modern, wellequipped workshops and offices. “We think of ourselves as an extension of Perkins,” said Huw. “We’ve been a Perkins distributor since 2011 but we’ve worked with Perkins for more than 40 years in some form or other”

IN BRIEF MALAYSIA LOOKS AT MINI-HYDRO OPTIONS The concept of mini-hydro is rising to have the next best potential after solar in Malaysia, according to RAM Ratings. “Given the country’s hilly topography and ample rainfall, mini-hydro plants have the next best potential to help Malaysia achieve its renewable energy target,” says a recent report. Mini-hydro plants generate 71MW of Malaysia’s renewable energy capacity, and are placed next to solar (282MW) and biomass (783MW). Sixteen weeks ago the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) awarded 15 bidders with a total installed capacity of 176.79MW, at an average bid tariff of 6.1 cents (25.89 sen) per kWh, under its e-bidding programme for mini-hydro projects. The move has apparently been welcomed by new investors.
TURBINE PRODUCTION IN CHINA COULD RETURN TO NORMAL, SAYS SURVEY BY NATIONAL AND GLOBAL WIND SECTOR GROUPS In a recent In a joint statement, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and the Chinese Wind Energy Association (CWEA) have confirmed that they believe supply chain disruptions and installation delays caused by quarantines and travel restrictions will be “moderate and focused in certain geographic regions”. Answers about how much capacity might be affected were not proposed, but the industry groups believes he slowdown will “not be as significant” as Wood Mackenzie’s prediction that installations could be halved if the epidemic continues into the middle of 2020. GWEC expects China to remain the world’s largest wind power market in 2020 having previously forecast 28GW of onshore capacity and about 4GW offshore to be added this year. GWEC and CWEA argued the impact of COVID-19 on wind power installations in 2020 will depend on how soon it can be contained — which the World Health Organisation suggested is “impossible” to predict. China’s onshore wind feed-in tariff is set to expire on 31st December 2020 - with projects approved beyond this date unable to claim support. The country’s five largest utilities have reportedly requested an extension to the deadline, the industry bodies said.

In Japan, IHI technology is seen as more efficient than wind or solar power - the Japanese engineering company IHI is conducting an extended pilot test on a turbine system which catches ocean currents and turn them into electricity. This is the first large-scale attempt to harness such ocean energy. In a consortium with other outside organizations, IHI commenced R&D into this “ocean current generation” concept nine years ago. It has been officially commissioned by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The strong “Kuroshio” (“Black current”) ocean current runs close to Japan’s coastline, and the related technology is considered to be applicable in regions favourable for power transmission, namely the sea area around Yakushima, Kagoshima Prefecture: off Kochi Prefecture: off Kii Peninsula and the Ogasawara Islands, The company has developed
a single twin-turbine 2 MW generator set, with a turbine diameter of about 40m, and a 1,000kW subsea floating system. The initial target is to undertake a demonstration test with a scale model in the actual sea area within three years. IHI’s Ocean thermal energy conversion: power generation works by exploiting the temperature difference (about 20°C or more) between the surface temperature (about 25°C) and bottom temperature (about 5°C) at a depth of 600 to 1,000 m. Stable power generation is ensured year-round in low latitudes, such as to assume part of the base load. “This is the critical advantage of this technology, which other renewable energies cannot provide,” says the company. Low-boiling medium (ammonium, etc.) is vaporised using the temperature of the warm surface and driving the turbine for generation. Vapour discharged from the turbine is condensed in the low temperatures of the seabed.

GAS GENSET DELIVERS WIN-WIN AT CCHP IN SHANGHAI, CHINA Nipro Shanghai is now relying on heat and power from a distributed energy power plant which provides stable and secure energy to the producer of medical equipment. The plant is operated by a local energy service provider that had invested a total of 8 million yuan. It covers an area of 500 m2 and is located in the Jiading district of Shanghai, the Chinese business metropolis.
A
s For installation, the project adopted a modular construction design: the equipment is integrated in containers, pipelines and other systems which are all factory processed and directly assembled on site. Thus, significantly reducing the whole construction period to only three months, which is way lower than the traditional construction of distributed energy power stations. In the process of production, the customer needs to use a large amount of energy, namely electricity, steam and hot water. However, in the past the fired boiler, that had been used, was old and half damaged and thus the needs of thermal energy production were not satisfied. What is more, its emissions also exceeded the standard levels. After collecting and analyzing energy consumption data of the customer, Shanghai Aerospace Energy Co., Ltd. (SAE), one of the official MWM distributors for China, provided a suitable combined cooling, heat & power (CCHP) solution for the customer. It consists of a MWM TCG 2020 V16k natural gas generator set with an 1500kWel output, one flue gas waste heat boiler with a 1.3t/h (steam pressure of 0.8MPa) steam output and a water tank with a 84t water storage capacity. The power plant provides part of the power, all the hot water and steam energy to the production plant, solving energy shortage, reducing customer energy cost and comprehensively solving customer’s energy demand to steam, electricity and hot water. The capacity of the distributed energy station can fully cover the energy demand of the customer, so that the distributed energy station can operate stable in a long-term. It not only solves the
requirements of customer’s energy cascade utilisation, but also follows the energy conservation and emission reduction development purpose of the customer, so as to achieve the goal of win-win for the customer. The MWM gas engines of the TCG 2020 series, produced in Mannheim/Germany, are perfectly geared to the challenges of a dynamic market environment. The models in the output range of 1,000 – 2,000 kWel meet the high requirements of a broad range of applications and guarantee efficiency, reliability, flexibility and environmental sustainability, together with low lifecycle costs and high profitability.

GAS GENERATED THROUGH BIO-DIGESTION IS RENEWABLE AND EMBIO LIMITED IN ITS OWN SMALL WAY IS HELPING INDIA REDUCE GREENHOUSE EMISSIONS.” expertise and project management skills, secured the contract to design, supply, install, erect and commission 1.5MWe biogas-based power plant. Operating since October 2017, the Jenbacher genset running in parallel to grid has significantly improved the conversion ratio. This facilitates the optimum utilisation of biogas generating 1.5MWe electricity with 869kg/hr of low pressure steam from the engine exhaust flue gases via a waste heat recovery boiler. Also chilled water is produced equivalent to 180 tonnes of refrigeration, using a hot water-fired Li-Br vapour
P absorption machine. Both, steam and chilled water are being utilised in the process. The low fuel and oil consumption, enhanced control systems, and higher efficiency advantages offered were cited by Embio Limited as the key reasons for choosing to install a Jenbacher 420 engine, along with Clarke Energy’s after-sales-service capabilities. Jenbacher 420 engines offer superior efficiency with an innovative engine concept, reports the company, Type 4 engines save on fuel without sacrificing flexibility or reliability. STORAGE BATTERIES
MARCH-APRIL 2020
BESS STORAGE FACILITIES FOR AUSTRALIA AS WELL AS CHINA & OTHER NATIONS IN ASIA
“
LYON’S AGREEMENTS WITH CHINA HUADIAN AND JERA POSITION LYON AT THE HEART OF OVERCOMING THE LIMITATIONS OF SOLAR AND WIND ENERGY SO THEY CAN BECOME PRIMARY POWER SOURCES.”
T
he Lyon Group has signed an agreement with China’s second largest power generation company, China Huadian Corporation, to co-develop and invest in power generation with integrated battery energy storage systems (BESS) in China, Australia and other Asian markets. The agreement brings together an alliance to co-develop stable renewable energy including Japan’s JERA Co. Inc, with whom Lyon and China Huadian each signed separate agreements in 2018. Lyon’s agreements with China Huadian and JERA position Lyon at the heart of overcoming the limitations of solar and wind energy so they can become primary power sources for the world. The new agreement documents Lyon and China Huadian’s current focus is on: 1.specific BESS retrofit opportunities in China and two other Asian countries, based on detailed plantspecific assessments; and 2.China Huadian’s intention to co-develop, purchase, finance and construct Lyon’s advanced integrated solar battery power stations in Australia, as lead EPC contractor via subsidiary China Huadian Engineering Co. Ltd, one of the world’s leading renewable EPC companies. The new agreement also covers: 3.integration of long-duration BESS into new and existing China Huadian projects in China and in other Asian
18
INDEPENDENT POWER ASIA
nations, to overcome the unstable power output of renewables, avoid curtailment, increase efficiency of exiting plant and ensure future renewable projects integrate BESS; and 4.development and acquisition of new and existing renewable power generation, as well as supplementation of existing thermal generation. Lyon is assisting two of the world largest utilities to address impediments to the roll out of renewable generation. China Huadian and JERA’s generation portfolios are bigger than 150GW and 74GW respectively. Lyon Chair David Green said the world’s biggest utilities are ‘awake to the imperative of making solar and wind energy work – for power systems, for investors and for national economies’. He points out: “Major global utilities like China Huadian and JERA, and the others who have approached Lyon for assistance, are very focussed on addressing the very real limitations of traditional renewables. “They understand that just continuing to invest in inflexible traditional solar and wind with uncontrolled, energy that is destabilising and often wasted is not commercially sustainable.’ As China ramps up its huge wind and solar construction plans, reduces subsidies, and moves toward a more competitive market, the value of avoided curtailment will be
measurable in billions of dollars. “China Huadian has big plans for solar and wind development but the significant curtailment and grid disturbance they have experienced to date shows that the volume of renewables they want to build will deliver greater benefit, both technically and commercially, with integrated storage,” says David Green. Lyon’s project design philosophy is that all new electricity generation must meet the power system requirements of a modern, stable electricity grid and be capable of providing commercial returns. “Major global utilities like China Huadian are approaching Lyon to work with and invest alongside us because our project design philosophy leads to flexible, dispatchable power stations that supply valuable clean energy, enhance grid stability, and address connection/curtailment risks,” Green points out. “Traditional standalone solar and wind projects deliver destabilising energy and waste too much of their output. They impose large expenditure on grid stabilisation, network augmentation and ’firming’. They are less flexible than the thermal generation they are supplanting.” He concludes: “Lyon’s integration of long-duration battery storage with power generation creates flexible, stable power stations that deliver predictable, dispatchable clean power. This reduces investment risk.” Lyon integrates BESS and renewable generation addresses many of the key opportunities and risks created by substantial and rapid change across the world’s electricity markets in the following ways: •Low and even negative pricing during peak solar and wind production (in markets without competition, this translates as a pattern of new supply variously exceeding and falling short of demand); •Greater demand for ancillary services at the same time as lower supply of them, reflecting the nature of predominant generation substitution (wind and solar replacing coal); •Growing curtailment of new generation, due to factors including but not limited to thermal constraints and local voltage and frequency destabilisation, driven by construction of clusters of solar and wind in zones remote from matching grid capacity or load. www.lyonasia.com.au
